I've been working on the "inside the tree house" background more, and it's almost done.

I still need to finish the sketched out areas (alcoves on second floor and chandelier).

If anyone has any requests for changes, please let me know. :)

Well, I've done it! Here's my entry for "Cut it in half"!  ;-D

DISCLAIMER: No matter how many times I play-test this game, I always find at least one more bug, so at some point I just had to stop. Hopefully I've fixed all the game-breaking ones and eliminated any dead ends (there aren't supposed to be any).

KNOWN BUG: let me know if the music doesn't play. This might be something on my system because it isn't consistent at all. Sometimes the music plays and sometimes it doesn't.  :-\

Without further ado...

MORT: Manageably OK Response Team

Is it an adventure game? Is it a platformer with only one short level? Who knows? You decide! (And let me know?)

Alternate between controlling Green MORT and Purple MORT (single player only) as you descend from the roof and climb up from the basement toward the ground floor where Pink MORT is being held. Can you outwit the robots and malfunctioning lifts to rescue your teammate? And yes, all these characters are paint-overs of the default Roger sprites. I had to cut corners somewhere.

Thanks for playing! I hope you enjoy it!  :)

Me before any playtesters: This game is the best! ;-D
Me after one playtester: This game is the worst! :(
Me after fixing all the bugs and clarifying the interface in response to the playtester: This game is good. Maybe. I guess. ???

Off to Easter festivities now. I should have my entry ready tomorrow! Have a great day, everyone.  :)

Quote from: Crimson Wizard on Fri 29/03/2024 12:16:04Ah, I've been waiting more than planned... I suppose that we may have a "stable" 3.6.1 declared around 1st April

Does this include the bug fix we discussed on discord, where restoring a save game didn't retain camera coordinates? Or was that only a problem in 3.6.0 builds?
#245
Hey, looks like we have a winner! (Or two!) @cat, care to cast a tiebreaker vote? Or do you want to declare a double win?
#246
@lapsking, sorry, I forgot I had already found that sound file. This thread wad inactive for a couple months and I should have gone back and re-read it. Apologies.
#247
I'd also like to suggest a GUI since it's one of the only big decisions left before we could cobble together a prototype:

1) A small menu button in one corner of the screen. Click it to open a menu bar that contains save, load, and exit options, and an inventory window.
2) two-click interface with no need for scrolling through modes. Left click to walk, interact, or talk to (determind automatically depending on whatis under the cursor), or use inventory (if active). Right click to put away inventory or examine.
3) code this in a fairly simple way that does not require a separate two-click handler script, so as to keep the code accessible to newcomers.

Any thoughts, suggestions, changes?

@Danvzare the gem looks great. Is it using the color palette from earlier in the thread? If not, that's the only change I would suggest.  :)
#249
@Danvzare we still need an inventory item image for the gem to be picked up, if you like.

@lapsking because the demo game will hopefully have wide open-source distribution, we want to be very careful about licensing, so it would be best if sound effects were public domain. I realize that's more work, but we do want to be as careful as possible.  :)  That said, I forgot we may also want a frog rabbit sound.
#250
@lapsking sound effects would be great! Right now the plan for the game is basically to pick up a key, walk through a door, and pick up a gem, so sound effects that could be helpful might be footsteps on outside path, footsteps on wood floor, a wooden door opening and closing, and maybe a power-up sound when the gem is picked up.

Check out the thread here for what has been discussed so far:

Quote from: Crimson Wizard on Tue 26/03/2024 08:47:41So this may be solved only if some people from AGS community would be willing to organize such project, and either write wanted templates and demo games, or at least make a list of tasks, and recruit more people to perform these.
Yes, I keep putting off finishing the backgrounds for the new demo game. Once I finish this month's MAGS entry I can make this more of a priority and hopefully help get the new demo game off the ground before too much longer.
#252
Almost there! Just need to code the final puzzle (and you know, make sure the final puzzle is actually fun, but with MAGS that's optional ;)). Also, still need to do lots of testing, because WOW, do I keep finding bugs.  8-0  And also, write the credits. And turn off debug mode.  (roll)

EDIT: And speaking of credits, who did the default Roger walk cycle? Both my characters just paint-overs of this...

Thanks again to everyone who voted for Tunnel Vision! It was incredible to see it appear in some of the same categories as games like Shards of God, D-list Diva, Abscission, Dreams in the Witch House, and Stranger in Utopia. I'm still so amazed and gratified it got nominated in three different categories.

Congratulations to all the winners and all the other nominees, and thanks again to the organizers for making the ceremony such a special and successful event. I'm very grateful for all the support of the AGS community as I learned, and as I keep learning, how to make good games. Onward!
#254
Thanks to everyone who voted for Elevation! It was really an honor to win alongside these other excellent MAGS winners. Here's to another great year of game-jamming!
#255
Hey, is it still possible to adjust the names on the character files I sent? The Bargaining Demon is from Super Author Simulator 2023 (not Mad Jack as it says currently) and the one that just says Rootbound is The Muse, also from Super Author Simulator. If it's too late, no big deal. Thanks for all your hard work to everyone for putting the client together and making the ceremony happen. :)
#256
I'm out this time unfortunately. My MAGS game is consuming my free time.

Quote from: cat on Tue 19/03/2024 08:30:47Who managed to make a game that is playable from start to finish?

No bonus points for me! (laugh) The game is about 2/3 playable but bugs keep cropping up every step of the way. Turns out I'm trying to do something difficult. :P
#258
I really ought to be coding the puzzles at this point, but here I am coding a custom SayAt extender function to keep each character's speech text within their respective viewports... because that's more novel for me.  (roll)
#259
I started using the dark grey version today, and it's very good! Much easier on the eyes. Thanks for making it. :)

Hi @Shadow1000, thanks for playing!

Spoiler
One of the stones at the top of the hill, in the room beyond the staircase, is what you're looking for.
