Besides, I really can't see how eyeshadow (to pick an example), should have any effect on sex appeal. What, do people have eyeshadow fetishes?

Abba did.

Wikipedia suggests that the eyes of a young person are bigger in proportion to their face, and so mascara and eyeshadow are meant to make someone look younger. However, the entry on Kohl says "Kohl was originally used as protection against eye ailments. Darkening around the eyelids also provided relief from the glare of the sun. ... Some kohl preparations contain a large proportion of galena (lead sulfide) or stibnite (an antimony ore), and the soot from various nuts, seeds and gum resins. Lead and antimony are toxic and would kill bacteria transmitted by flies and contaminated water."

Of course lead/antimony has long term health implications but then life expectancies were much shorter then anyway...

Remember, too, that there's makeup done well and done badly. Bad makeup is noticable, good makeup is not noticed conciously, but it noticed by your subconcious/libido

Atmospheric so far. A few comments:

Get rid of the green anti-aliasaing outlines of the characters!
You're apostrophes are sometimes a bit wrong: plurals dont get apostophes
You can bring up the GUI at the top even on the start screen
Just after the intro, on the boat, clicking on the bookcase says that its the stairs.
Draw your own cursors
Do an inventory screen that matches the style of the game
Ditto those save/load buttons

Well, about this time last year it was quite clear which games were going to be the AGS Awards nominees: Cirque, TOAK, A2, etc. had all been out and had a lot of buzz. Now, this year it doean't seem to be so clear to me, but they maybe I just haven't been payign enough attention. But here's my impression of games that have been seen as good this year:

Ben Jordan 4 (and 5 will probably be in the running if it comes out in time)
Apprentice Deluxe (but will people go for a remake like this?)
Frank the Farmhand part 2
Barn Runner games
The Great Stroke Off
Yahtzee's Galaxies of Wonderment thingy (non-adventure?)
AGS 3D (non-adventure)
Chick Chaser
Jessica Plunkenstein
Noisy Mountain
Da New Guys
Where's M Hat Ma
Saturday School
Young Gabrial King
Robotragedy
Zooreal
Emily Enough

EDIT: Added EE... sorry, I thought i had it in there to start with!

This site has a minimum subscription of £52 a year but does offer the possibility of gaining some serious capital for your venture....  :=

Yes, that's the one, Ahmosh.

m0ds, I'd love for this to succeed, though. All the best in it!

Ron's article, based on current-day economics.

Also, I think you'll find that a lot of help for young people starting businesses are gone now, as they were exploited by the unscrupulous, or they only apply to certain in-very-high-demand jobs, liek plumbers anywhere near London, or to special interest groups, like ethnic minority lesbians.

Ummm, 10000 divided by 5 people for 5 months makes 400 quid a month. Since the average cost of employing someone is double their wage, thats a monthly salary of 200 quid a month. That's not going to cover the cost of living  for most of the people on the forums... and is also way below the minimum wage in the UK, which comes to about 700 a month. That's before you insurnace, rent, electricity, and count capital expenses such as computers.

First, hire an accountant who can do sums!

I think Ron Gilbert did an article on the economics of games making a while back.

You'll need to put together a decent business plan to persuade anyone to lend you money. The DTI website has a bunch of helpful stuff here, as my wife and I know from trying to put together a business plan for our own business.

Also, I think you'll be shocked at how expensive office space is. I know I was shocked at the costs for the places I looked at, admittedly this was more a warehouse thing than offices, tho.

I think it will only work on a distributed basis, to reduce costs, and paying people by work rather than hours. However, you lose a lot of control this way, and such projects are much harder to manage.

Yes, we're already at part 7 and still the quality of these games is maintained as good as it ever was...  :=

I forgot to release this back in May, and I think its not fair for me to withhold it from the poor public, so, enjoy!

Sorry to drag an old thread up, but I just found an old avatar:

Watch the squirrel drink himself to oblivion

Also, I want to ask people if anyone can remember the URL for my dancing ultrasound baby avatar, as i dont have the computer which had the original anymore and its lost somewhere in the depths of 2dadventure...

I'll put my other ones here too, so I don't forget them:
Christmas version thereof:

Yay, the supreme being that is Pumaman looked up my lost avatar for me and found:

Sounds like "Just a Minute"... do we get to buzz in if they hesitate, deviate or repeat themselves?

Easyjet fly to Alicante from Basel, Belfast, Bristol, Dortmund, Geneva, Liverpool, Gatwick, Luton, Stanstead, Newcastle and East Midlands. STN-ALC is a 50 quid all included in the March 2006 date I tried, which is the latest date which they are selling tickets for now.

Ryanair fly to Murcia instead which viamichelin thinks is an hour and a half by car. They fly there from Luton, Stanstead, Dublin, Prestwick, Liverpool and East Midlads

BMIbaby do from East Midlands, Hethrow, Notingham, Manchester Birmingham and Cardiff to Alicante

Jean Valjean did 20 years for stealing some bread. I know how you feel about this kind of thing. There's still some things from ages ago I sometimes think over again in my head and say "If only I'd done X". It's pretty annoying, so I suggest you either:

a) Write them a letter telling your story in full, apologising for where you made mistakes, giving your good record and making it clear it was a mistake rather than theft and that you should really have had the chance to appeal. Say how you enjoyed working there, etc. and maybe you can get your job back, or at least an apology from them, which would give you some closure.

b) Forget about it as much as you can and move on with your life. Don't dwell on it, as it will drive you nuts and turn you into a bitter twisted person like Fluke

Why not have it in Winter? Winter in Spain is like the UK summer... also, I will be in Spain in early January anyway...  ;)

You do know that AGS has a built in z for characters, don't you?

There are 3 popular airports near Benidorm: Alicante, Valencia and Murcia, so it is very well communicated. Malaga and Granada are not too far away either...

I think it would be best to have it during the holidays of people's colleges, though. I would be able to come, whenever... but I'd probably go in a hotel somewhere nearby since I've got a wife and two screaming kids to worry about/keep away from Helm's fists.

Firstly, on topic:

Car drivers kill more people in a day worldwide than all terrorist activity in the whole of the past few years. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to stop terrorists, but it does mean that we should not throw away our civil liberties and piles of cash for the sake of a relatively minor threat.

And the ongoing terrorism in Iraq is far worse than any indivdual event in US, UK, etc.

And the rule of dictators like Mugabe, Hussein, Stalin, etc. has/had the state wiping out many more lives still, directly or indirectly.

now, back to the religious "debate"

the point i'm trying to make with the santa claus letter reference is that just because a letter is supposedly written by or to somebody doesn't mean that person exists or that the events took place, i could write a series of fictional letters right now and bury them somewhere and in 1000 years time somebody could discover them and jump to the conclusion that because they're dated back 1000 years that they must be real and the events actually happened because they're ignorant as to what actually did happen.

But boyd, you said:

Quote
also, i don't tar all religious (not reilgous) with the same brush, only the pick and mixers that choose to ignore parts of their particular rule book, if every religious person actually followed their faith to the letter and other people realised that the majority of all religions are born from the same story there would be less religious hatred.

You say that religious people should follow their faith to the letter. It's actually then irrelevant to that argument whether their religion is true or if anyone existed or not. Christians who follow, say, the New International Version translation of the New Testament to the letter would therefore have to believe that Jesus is the only way to God, as  that is explicitly said in that version by Jesus himself. Therefore is it inconsistent of you to demand that reilgous people follow their faith to the letter AND that they also acknowledge that all religions come from the same story.

Quote
and do you still really not understand the point i'm trying to make about why drugs laws don't work?
they don't work because the use of drugs carries no consequences other than the associated good feelings and eventual addiction.

If that is the point you are trying to make, then why when I read back through the thread have you not said a single thing about this before. You're trying to wriggle away again!

Also, don't you think that dependency on something that puts you in a state incapable to drive and work is a bit of an issue? Be it alchohol or drugs or even something like co-dependent people it ruins their lives. There's all these rich people out there who get around the issues of badly cut drugs and illegality and yet they still check into rehab when they realise that its screwed them up...

I'm all for eliminating drug prohibition, but your arguments once again are bogus. Sometimes I agree with your objectives and sometimes I disagree, boyd, but you ALWAYS seem to argue one way or another on completely fallacious arguments. It looks like you're the one who hasn't done any research.

Quote
suggest you do some research on the origins of religion and stop accusing me of being het up about religion when it's obvious that what i'm saying is pissing you off more than what you're saying is pissing me off.

I'm not pissed off, I'm just pointing out that you can't argue a point for toffee. And surely, a religious person will believe that the origin of their religion is God, so what further research is necessary for that worldview?

Quote
also i am not pick and mixing anything and didn't even say anything about jesus, and i'm not blaming religion for all the problems in the world, i'm just blaming it for a majority of all terrorism, fighting and warfare that has taken place in the last two millenia, most of which can be proved just by picking up a history book.
Oh, OK, as long as its only the last 2000 years of human conflict then, taht's OK.  ::)

Firstly, religous wars were going on before Jesus. Why stop at 2000 years unless you have a particular grudge against Christianity?

Secondly, I think you'll find that any decent historian will point out that most conflicts in the last 2000 years are essentially political and not religious.

Boyd is a skillful exponent of careful editing to avoid answering the poits he cant find an answer to and to make it look like he's got an answer when he hasn't. e.g.

So you've chosen to ignore "the letter" where Jesus said "No one can come to the father except by me"? Talk about pick and mix, hypocrite.

and santa chose to ignore my letter in 1987 when i asked him for that scalectrix :(

But actually, your example is the wrong way around. Are you trying to say that YOU are fictional, Boyd? And its a red herring anyway. I was pointing out that you had pick-and-mixed by saying that people who believe in Jesus should not beleive that he was the only way to god, ignoring that an essential part of Christian teaching is that he said the opposite himself.

It's like your argument on drugs laws being pointless. I had made the same point myself first to point out the fallaciousness of your idea that all religions should be banned. Banning drugs doesn't work, so why should banning religion?

Basically, you are het up about religion and want to blame it for all the problems of the world, so you rant on about it without being self-consistent, factual or convincing.

I'm not trying to argue that Christianity is true right now. I'm just pointing out that your arguments against it are a load of hogwash.
