BUMP!

Steve, Is this still being worked on?

File still doesn't work for me... would anyone be able to provide a mirror?
It would be greatly appreciated, as I'd really like to try this :)

Peace,

Um, yeah, I think someone has already done Yahtzee's games, though I can't remember whether they were narrated or not.

Go for it, I say!

p.s. I'd suggest doing a little research on how to do them well, if you haven't done one before. Keeping the narration interesting/funny for a long time is very difficult. I'd also sugget playing through the games first and taking notes on all the things you want to say during the video.

Tuomas: I experimented with shifting the head/shoulder around one pixel, but at this resolution, the movement is quite dramatic and he 'over-shoots' what would be considered a natural stance.
The limb length is intentional, it's part of the style I was trying to create with this series of sprites.

Pablo: Thanks for the paintover.  :)
Regarding your comments about the 3/4 and front sprites not matching, the 3/4 was the original sprite, which I tried to replicate into the front view (which I will only be using for walking, not standing), and narrowed the legs simply because I didn't want the legs for the left-ish, right-ish and front to be the same.
Your take on the sprites is, however, quite interesting, the side view being especially useful.

Jim: Ha, good point, facial hair fixed. I also experimented with different styles of beard, but ultimately it seemed to age him too much.

Cuiki: Thanks for the paintover, the different style has given me a few ideas on different ways Hans could look :)
r.e. different skin colour, I forgot to mention in the OP, I was trying to go for unrealistic skin tones, a la Ben304

Thanks for all the help so far, these are my last few iterations

thoughts?

Critics' Lounge / Side View Needs Improvement
Fri 12/02/2010 10:29:21
Hello all,

I have recently been re-visiting a sprite I made for a sprite jam a while back, and have now added a front view and a left-facing 3/4 view to match the original sprite, both of which I am quite happy with.

The side view, however, refuses to co-operate, and comes across as very blocky, looking nothing like the originals :-

I have also been experimenting with different palettes (the current 8 colour palette is what you see here plus a mauve-y sort of colour, which can be seen in the other entries in the link), mostly for the skin, and haven't been able to find anything I'm particularly happy with, so some suggestions on that too would be appreciated. :)

I am, of course open to crit on the other three sprites as well, although the side view is the one I am least happy with.

Peace

Perhaps next time you could set the camera up facing you for the process itself, dictating to the camera what you are doing. Then you could go back afterwards and re-enact the process, which will give you a lot more flexibility. i.e. no time restraint, multiple takes, no need to ad-lib, etc.
This was still worth watching as it is though  :)

I think you should read the above post by Grim Reaper again.  ;)

He's not square gaiting...  ??? His left arm moves forward as his left leg moves back... or am i reading the sprite wrong?

Wow, looking at the cycle again... You're right.

I saw the leg as moving forwards, not backwards, in fact at a casual glance, I still do.
I do not know what to suggest to help the distinction though. :-\

So I guess no one accepted his apology then.

Well didn't he just blame everything that was wrong with him on his brother?
I remember when I read it, I didn't really feel sorry for him at all  :-\

I had a similar experience. There were also a couple of points in the film when I thought "I wish people wouldn't keep getting up and walking in front of the screen" before realising that those people were in the foreground in the film!

But the thing is... every time this happens, you remember that you are in a theatre, breaking the immersion. I still haven't seen the film in 2d, so I might have enjoyed that a bit more, but the constant breaking of my suspension of disbelief is one of the main factors that forces me to consider Avatar a "good film" or possibly even "great film", but not revolutionary like many have been saying.

I haven't been able to try this out yet, I downloaded it twice, but when I try to unzip it I get the following message:
I think a nice feature would be to add a capability to draw with rectangular pixels and perhaps a dithering effect so you can just paint on the checkerboard pattern, (with an optional secondary colour on every other pixel).
1. I just tried to download it and it worked fine. I guess just keep trying?
2. Rectangular pixels? For C64 artwork?
3. Dithering would be easy enough for the pencil and fill tools I guess (perhaps with <alt>-click) but more of a pain for the brush tool. Which did you mean?

1. Tried again, it downloads fine, but the .rar file is corrupt...:(

2. Yes, more or less.

3. Well, all three would be the most ideal, I suppose.  ;)

I was considering how one would accomplish the brush effect today, and I was thinking something along the lines of the brush defining a region, and everything in that region gets painted; odd pixels colour 1, even pixels colour 2.

I made a mock-up of what I'm trying to describe:

On the left we see that the secondary colour is transparent (i.e. null).
On the right we can see what it would look like with the second colour is set as green.

However I am quite excited about this tool and can't wait to give it a try.

I think a nice feature would be to add a capability to draw with rectangular pixels and perhaps a dithering effect so you can just paint on the checkerboard pattern, (with an optional secondary colour on every other pixel).

But at least to our own planet. Can you imagine if we accidentally killed all life, possibly life more intelligent than our own, on a foreign planet, with only a few bacteria left on a tiny droid that more than likely won't give us a whole lot of valuable information?

I don't think our mere presence would wipe out an entire ecosystem, especially not one that is supposedly very intelligent. They'd probably be smart enough to put those affected by any potential bacteria or virus in quarantine, and invent medicine/vaccine to treat it.

Either way, it'd be really fun if there was a really advanced civilization living underneath the ice on Europa, just some light minutes away...

This falls under that great human presumption that we're actually wanted elsewhere in the cosmos.

This also falls under the great human presumption that all life will tend towards human-like intellegence if given enough time to evolve; a la Planet of the Apes...

As far as I can see, your perspective is spot on, which is always a good start. One thing I'd suggest is to add a bit of texture and perhaps some shape to the objects in the room, i.e. panels on the door, more 'woody-ness' to the wood, etc.

It's hard to critique the first background when there's so little to it. again, perspective is sound, but the buildings are going to need a lot more detail before it can be used in game.

He's not the only one, I've been seeing the "Site don't allowed" thing as well. Might want to consider using photobucket or something if you want more feedback.

Yeah, me too, I mentioned it in the thread with your last sprites as well. I could see them when you added the direct link however.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Background of House

I urge you to look at the windows of Spacepaw's, mainly looking at the amount of floor shown in the upper and lower windows. That magic word beginning with P comes to mind ;)

In regards to the pond, look at the roof of the lower level, on the left of the picture. This is a dead flat area, and think how big it is (the size of a large room).
If you compare that to your pond, you can see that the shape and size is all wrong considering where we are looking at it from.

I'd recommend putting in some perspective lines on a different layer just to help you keep things consistent (because on its own, it's a very nice looking pond :))

With the close up, I'd suggest adding a character as a size reference, because the table looks either very big, or very low to the ground, and as such it is hard to tell how big the drawers at the back are, and thus how far back the room goes.

I told Kastchey, that themes like that make me wish I wasn't a host! :D
But can't you just make a game if you like the theme? ;)

Yeah, It used to be about the love man, the love of making games.
Ever since your big break in Hollywood all you can think about is winning,
you've changed man...
I'm not even sure it can ever be the same between us :'(

Pedants will of course point out that the new decade doesn't start until 2011. :)

I'm sure we've had this debate before, but basically its based on AD meaning "of our Lord" (it means this whether you're a Christian or not) and therefore year numbers are ordinal numbers, of which the first number is "first" and not "zeroth". Therefore the first decade AD began in the year 1 and ended at the end of year 10 and the second decade went 11-20 etc. Therefore the third millennium goes 2001-3000 and this decade runs 2001-2010.

Starting in year one and not year zero makes logical sense if the bc/ad system was made by people who lived at this time, although if my memory has not failed me, this year system came into use somewhere in the realm of 500 years later. (Referring, of course, to the time I heard/read this fact. I was not there 1500 years ago ;))

Also, if you follow the pattern from the back (i.e. counting up through the BC's)then this would be 0 BC, 0 years before Christ, making the next year 'year one'.

Furthermore, AFAIK, the majority of historians agree that the actual birth of Christ was at least a few years out of kilter with the system, so being pedantic here is hypocritical because the figure is only approximate anyway.

For this reason, I choose to celebrate the new decade on the 'zeroth', and also because this is the most climatic year, for you get to see the number in the tens column roll over,  :) or as we saw last decade, the hundreds. :D

So, AGS Community; Happy New Decade!

Critics' Lounge / Re: Basic pixel art guy

The main problem I see with the original image is that he has stick-thin arms relative to his other proportions (in your second image you went the other way and made the shoulders narrower instead). I think you need to send this guy to the gym a bit and pad out those biceps and forearms.  ;)
Also, perhaps the crotch of the pants should be lowered slightly; he seems to be 'riding high' as they used to say back in the old country :P

Is it just me or what because I can't see any of your images or your avatar Neon... at first I thought it was your host, but other people appear to see them... this is a bummer because I was really intrigued by your blue-screen animation.

Would you be able to host them somewhere else as well?
Such as 2dAdventure.com :)
