Hmm... no wonder they used DPaint for MI, etc. It's not just a pretty face! Plus, it's in multiple resolutions, from the obvious 320x200-800x600, to the less obvious 640x200, 1024x768, and the hercules one, all in 2, 4, 16 and 256 colours! I would have used a higher res for my game if this computer weren't so slow. But, here are the first two rooms to UTD!

Ryruu's Room.

This is the first screen you'll ever see. The door on the right cannot be entered, tampered with etc, and this room supplies 4 inventory items, and is the start of both Episode I (Propheting from Fur) Part I (Finding the Evidence) and Part II (Late Night Reconecance.)

After climbing out the window, you're in your own back yard. To the left leads to Mesovich's ship, the main area in Part II. The right leads to the village map screen. Blocking your way is Lierehn (alias Lie) the poet. He does NOT like people trampling past him, but if you give him the right incentive, he will leave. The river isn't very deep or fast flowing, but nor is it impossible to fall in. Its not fatal, though. That rock looks like the perfect place for small amphibians....

C+C the rooms, in their entirety. Not just art, but my descriptions, too. Oh, and I didn't draw these. A friend of mine (alias Mike Da Hat) did the line art. I coloured in and edited them in DP.

Without further ado....

It may look a mite distorted, for dpaint has no square aspect for 320x200. Let me explain my sprites:
Salute - Ryruu salutes. No event connected, just a test to see what I can do with the arms.
Yay high - Ryruu indicates the height of someone he's looking for.
Tied up - no need to explain, but he's struggling.
Investigating - second frame for the bend down and pick up animation.
Guard: Dressed up as an Eden guard. He doesn't fit into the chestplate (the uniform doesn't leave much leaway for husky 4'9" esquans.) and he's holding the Y47 standard military issue stungun.

What do you think? Deluxe Paint really is - the developers choice! So get your copy today and stop using MSPaint! :P

Is it, at the moment, possible to create transparencies in 8bit games? I know it can be done, ala DPaint, where the colours underneath the object are darkened depending on what the transparency is. According to my sources, if you have a big enough pallette, and backgrounds that are imported "Exact Pallette", you can make things darker or lighter, like shadows, but I'm not sure about tints. They might mess up the sprite. It would be a great help to be able to have transparencies in Lo-Res, 8bit games... people like me with slow computers would benefit from it!

Also, the Tinted regions with a colorise type function... could that be done in 8bit games too? But bah, I'm not respectable enough to suggest things like that...
#104
Now, after a morning of Deluxe Paint (gotta love that pixelly feel!) I managed to create three different charactor sprites for Lo-Res, which was made easier by drawing in the resolution it was going to be played in. This is going to be a reoccuring theme, methinks. :P So, what do you reckon?

Oh, and can someone recommend a free web host w/o ads and has FTP? Bleh... my UK2 website is exploding again...
#105
You may know these three esqonians from previous art forms before. They're the protagonal charactors for Until the Dawn (The insofar mythical game about fur farming in the future, will not start working on it until I've made a few games with AGS,purely because I can't draw backgrounds :)) and also focuses for some of my comics. The picture may look a bit weird and distorted, but thats only because it was drawn in 320x200 res, and we all know those pixels are taller than they are wide. Anywhar:

From the left:
Ryruu, Amazonian Esquan
Kiera-Aurora, Arctic Esquan
Brandt, Desert Esquan

Comments are always welcome. In fact, they are carefully filed away and kept in secrecy until the nine deadly sins are forfilled.

I'm trying to make a custom gui for a.. uh.. game... but I'm failing at one point and one point only. I cannot make Use Inventory 1 with Inventory 2 work. To clarify, using one inventory item with another.

It shows up on the status line, so I think its something to do with the on_mouse_click function... here is my code for on_mouse_click!
function on_mouse_click(int button) {
 // called when a mouse button is clicked. button is either LEFT or RIGHT
 if (IsGamePaused() == 1) {
   // Game is paused, so do nothing (ie. don't allow mouse click)
 }
 else if (button==LEFT) {
   ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_WALK);
   if(GetGlobalInt (1) == 1) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_LOOK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
   else if ((GetGlobalInt (1) == 2) && (player.activeinv != -1)) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_USEINV);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
   else if (GetGlobalInt (1) == 2) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_USE);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
   else if (GetGlobalInt (1) == 3) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_TALK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }

   }
 else if ((button == LEFTINV) && (GetGlobalInt (1) == 2)) {
   SetActiveInventory(GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y)); }
 else if ((button==LEFTINV) && (GetGlobalInt (1) == 1)) {
   RunInventoryInteraction (GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y), MODE_LOOK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
 else if ((button==LEFTINV) && (GetGlobalInt (1) == 3)) {
   RunInventoryInteraction (GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y), MODE_TALK);
         SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
 else if (button == RIGHTINV) {
   RunInventoryInteraction (GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y), MODE_LOOK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }

 else {   // right-click resets the status bar
   SetGlobalInt(1, 0);
 }
}

I'm using Global Int 1 for the gui, by the way.

How do you make something look like it's obviously a cartoon and not based on anything? Simple! Just stick to primary colours and draw something that says "Hi, I'm a cartoon! I vant to drink your blood!"

Rwambul (pronounced Reh-wam-bull) walking.

Different animations - meh. And the reason he's eating the ladder is because he's a walkin' talkin' bag... I think. Either that or he has a bottomless throat :P

An animation of a discarded cartoon. :P

Yes, can't you tell this was done solely in M$Pain? (Apart from the Quarterstaff pole, that was done in PSP with Layer Transparency) 82 Colours (OMG, like.), And it took five whole hours. Bleh.

"MD wielding a spirit Quarterstaff"

Meh. I just feel like typing alot about MD and the weapon he's holding. Ignore below if you're not interested.

Malevolent Dragon
MDragon was working as a mercenary at the time of this photograph. A vampire had been sighted in the vicinity of the mansion, singing songs about how nice it is that it's tuesday. Unfortunately, it wasn't. His mission was to infiltrate the mansion and destroy the beast. He can't defeat it with any mortal weapon, so he had a special quarterstaff made, called:

Gadsesburan
This ethereal weapon was created to destroy the musical vampire. MDragon did not want to have a sword, as it was cliché and plus, he cannot use blades effectively. So he argued with his payers and finally convinced them to make a quarterstaff out of the same material as the sword. It is a spirit weapon, which harms the soul more than the body. And undead, whose souls are hanging onto their bodies by a single metaphysical thread, are weak versus these weapons. The vampire, however, has a strong body-soul bond. So it would take quite a while to kill him.

THE END. Tell me what you think of the picture!

Yes, it's that time again for me to ask you to critique my work. I have a small collection of artwork and it needs YOU! Unfortunately, it's all dragons, so those who are dracophobic, say Aye and run for the hills (after commenting of course.) Those who are dracophiles, please, restrain yourselves. Don your dragon costumes and enter:

Indeed. Comments will be anylyzed under a stethoscope just so I can say:
"It's dead, sir."

Lets see. I'm creating a Flight of the Amazon Queen style gui for my game, but whenever I try to add to the inventory, it terminates with this error message:

^ Artists interpretation of the incriminating evidence.

I made SURE that the inventory items fitted within my gui. It was 5 inventory items per line (I set the variable in Game_Start), one line, 33x39 graphics. I calculated this as 165x39. So it can't be the sizing. My gui works until I press Ctrl-S (get all inventory items) or I use Add Inventory. I'm using 320x200x256 colours (apart from the colour loss, it rocks!) Any suggestions? I'm stuck, and this is my first game.
#111
Hehe, I don't really know what to say other than: What do you think? It's an anthropomorphic version of one of my friends. ;)

And don't just insult it. Thats cruel! But comments are always welcome! And I'm sorry for the size, I scanned it then coloured it -_-

I awake, but can't see through the blackness that covers my vision. I remember nothing, nothing but what I am experiencing now. The heat all around me blazes, but I am still icy cold. I feel around me, revealing I'm in some kind of room. I hear flames burning... where am I? WHO am I?

STBE is about the ghost of a girl who saw too much. She doesn't know she is dead, or where she is. Only a burning rage and a will to escape the hell she is going through drives her. Of course, her rage makes her virtually solid, so no phasing through walls or vanishing for her. Her first puzzle is to get out of the burning room she is trapped in. Fortunately, she can read Braille (she was teaching the blind herself before she died), and that may be useful. The interface is like Flight of the Amazon Queen, but it only has four options: Feel/Touch, Use, Take,  and Open/Close. The reason for the open/close is because you may come across items that need both to be opened, then used.

I'm going to post screenshots as soon as I finish the demo version, which will be tonight (GMT). So, until then, Hasta la Vista, Baby.

[Enthusiasm]Okay, I'm GOING to make this game whether I like it or not :P. [Enthusiam]

Hehe, I'd love to have PC Speaker sounds incorperated into AGS. It's the same thing used in MI1&2, Maniac Mansion (original)and other very old games. You could make the sound of a door opening or a clock ticking without taking up a mass amount of memory! I don't know about you, but, when used properly, can be very useful and retro. But when misused, it's just cheesy ;D

Dragons! Dragons! We all love dragons! All hail dragons! Indeed. Can you tell I love dragons?

Eheh, Mi raeriir doinst memaer hei mi diiren se! o_O Mi consiir, kei woaer waein teo viewiir drachena aetriir drachens? Neiir mi!
...um, sorry....
Heheh, I really don't know why I drew this! I mean, why would anyone want to see dragons eating dragons? Not me!

Baby Behemoth:

Okaaay... I've been working my proverbial socks off making these badly animated walk cycles, using only MSPaint and Jasc Animation Shop 3:P (Drop the t on Paint and you have it's description!). This is Baby Behemoth (Or Behemoth, as his charactor is named.) About 7, acts like he's half his age, and best friends with the main charactor (She's only half drawn, so I can't show you her). I imagine him having a husky voice. So, what do you people think?

...

Oh, and he IS a baby. You should see the size of an adult! :)
#116
Hehe.. :P I got lotsa art for you. Not all of it is adventure game art, though. In fact, most of it isn't! I just wanna show you my work.

BEHEMOTH: (One of the charactors in the MD.NET Comics)

A Lo-Res picture, made in MSPaint and OHRRPGCE's graphics editor.(Its got high saturation due to me using QBasic's 256 colour pallette.) Its for my really OLD style RPG.

Just a lil'muckaround, seeing if I can get my charactor to look like a baby. It worked.

The original pixel art for the charactor.

Another muckaround, not really successful.

DRAGONS: (My trademark creatures)

A load of dragon pics I did as avatars. Same they are too large :P

Heh... the talking profile for my game ;)

BEARS: (well... Esquans)

Two charactors for a game that probably will never be made. :(

Well? What do you think of my art? C+C is recorded and will be used against you in any court of law, but is always welcome :P
#117
Here it is... some artwork and concepts! Yay! I really need crits on these.. for it isn't easy to have a review saying my artwork sucks :P. The adventure itself is in two parts. One is the 1st person view puzzle solving bit, where you pick up objects and use them accordingly. This is the most part of the game. The second is the world map. You are in top view here, like an RPG. There is also a battle system, but its still to be implemented, if at all. Don't worry about the world map, its just things like city streets which have no meaning at all(The city you're in is "Ingleheim". One of the places in my game series) and grassland and stuff, like in Simon1, and unlike Simon 3D, where you could roam around for ages lost.

Matiireiin (Dragon):
Matiireiin (pronouced Mat-ere-rein or shortened to Mat) is a dragon who has doubts about a legend. (This legend was, that there was an abandoned theatre where an actor died. This also co-incides with the undead, who have been prophecised to return to power.)
He sets out with his predictable leather bag and goes to find this derilict theatre.

No breathin' flame or flying for this type of dragon...

THE INTERFACE:
The interface is based on a gui at the bottom of the screen, but instead of 'use item with object', you just have ACTION OBJECT or INVENTORY on OBJECT. And instead of just interact, which sometimes brought up saying they're too weak, you can now KICK the object! Yay! Here's the inventory gui (I'm using floppies... so I can't transport that much at a time.)

And the statistics gui (You'll notice this is for 320x240, my favourite res.)

THE ROOMS:

And finally, here is a taster of a room (Sister's bedroom). I can't give too much away, though :), so no objects or scary toys like it will have in the real thing.

And here is a cutscene snippet of getting a glyph (extra ability)

I apologize for the bmps, my GIF converter screwed up x_x

'K. I'm helping my dad bring his PC company from the grave. He has a server, ready for customers, but, woe betide, he knows nothing about computers. I was thinking, what do people want in a web host? I, myself, want:
PHP/MySQL (Downloadable from respective site)
Plentyful Space (1000mb? Whee!)
a CGI-BIN (Probably free)
FTP (?)
Subdomains (Yay!)

But what do you want? I've gotta sort this mess out before he abandons the project! And please, keep it real and sensible. I can't give a million mb of space for 1p.

(Oh, and he's charging 50 pounds/ year)

This IS an IF game. I just can't draw feet. Or shoes. Bleh.

Game Name: Until the Dawn (I am but a slave, and many a skin I have to save)

NEW SPECIES: Esquan
Esquans are bear like creatures, probably an Anthromorph, and are just about less intelligent than the average human (needless to say, there will be one or two humans who are less intelligent than an Esquan. I can name a few.) They come in three main types:
Amazon - Ryruu is an Amazonian Esquan. They can climb, but prefer to stay on the ground. They have learnt how to use weapons against predators, but don't hunt, as they are mostly herbivores, although they can eat meat, like fish. These are brown, some with black.

Arctic - Kyra is an Arctic Esquan.  These white furred creatures thrive in cold, icy tundras, located where the sun shines least, at the two poles and the Desert Glaciers (Where there is ice so thick it cannot be melted.) These do eat meat, and can survive three weeks without food nor water. But that has happened only on rare occasions, as you just have to dig to find frozen fish where they live. They are either white or very light blue.

Desert - Juuten is a Desert Esquan. These have the least fur, and have wide feet to stop them sinking into the sand of the deserts. They also have padded hands, to stop themselves getting hurt while trying to sabotage cactuses and hunting prey. Of all the Esquans, these are the most diverse, as they can 'soak' up heat to use in the night, like a solar panel. They are mostly beige furred, but some are black.

Synopsis (I love that word :P):
It is the year sometime in the future, where mankind has discovered how to travel deep into space and back again using The Infinity Theory. Fur has been made illegal to farm all across earth, since all furry animals (sparing hyenas) were hunted to exinction during the Fur Rush of 2009. So, one person, hungry for money, decided: "Illegal on earth, eh? What about on other planets?" and he found a loophole in the law.

Some time later, in the Amazonic forests of another planet:
Suddenly, from out of the sky came a giant flying ship, glowing in the midday suns. It landed mercilessly on one of our huts, and from the ship came an alien, dressed all in white. And he declared:
MN: Bow down to me! I am your god!
And he gave us a new holy book and commented on our silky fur. And as we opened the book, it read:
"Rule 1: Manage your fur in a proper way. NO dirt or stains shall be left on you.
Rule 2: Eat fish. It will help keep your fur nice.
Rule 3: Those who have the best fur will be rewarded, and taken to the fac... Better Place.
RULE 4: DISOBEDIENCE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED."
He explained about the Beauty Pagent, and how the winner will be sent on 'holiday'. It all seemed so perfect. And since our last 'god' wanted to have sacrifices of consumables every day, We did adopt him. Later, a great flood wiped out most of our crops, but our God saved us from perishing by making fish out of thin air! And then, when wild animals attacked, he created coloured fire that lit up the sky, and it made noise like  a bird at first, and then it was louder than the loudest thunderoll. It scared us, and the animals daren't ever come back to us. Of course, we didn't know then what he was doing.

The Aftermath and Ryruu's conspiracy theory
It is the second morning in the day, and there is a congregation of three Amazonian Esquans round a wooden table. The eldest (EL) is tall, with worn eyes and a scowl to match. The youngest (YN) of them is small, with pigtails and a face that said: "I'm ready to cry at any moment." . The last, is Ryruu (RY). Eleven, brown, and he was picking at his plate, which contained only raw fish.

RY: I'm sick of this stuff. Why can't we have something else?
EL: Because its the Lore to have fish on a Tuesday.
RY: And every other day of the week.
YN: Daddy! Ryruu is disobeying the Lore again!
EL: Ryruu! I'm ashamed of you! If you don't eat your fish you won't have very good fur!
RY: Why do they want us to have good fur?
YN & EL: Its the Lore.
RY: But why is it the Lore?
YN: Shut up! You're going to get Him angry!
RY: I'm fed up of this! You're all so conformative!
EL: GET OUT! If you're not going to obey HIM, think about it and then change your mind! And don't come back until you've changed your mind!
Ryruu walks out of his house into the village, where some Esquans are constructing a crude statue of their 'God'
RY: Why? Why does he want us to be so vain? I must go see the wise Esquan. He'll know of this.

And, sure enough, the wise old Esquan did have some Earthly books that the 'God' had discarded. And what they told facinated and horrified Ryruu. But, alas, as they looked at each page, it crumbled to dust, as all badly made books do after years of neglect. It showed them fashion. What people were wearing, and to the horror of the two, this year, Esquan was in fashion.

:P What do you think?

Yes, after literally seconds* of procrastination, I have come up with a sink-or-swim kind of game GUI. But will it hold up against your comments? And has it been done before on AGS?

PARSE-AND-CLICK!

Heres a brief explanation of the interface: It combines the flexibility of the Text Parser, and the simplicity of the Point and Click... without word guessing or limited choices. You simply click on a button to fill the Text Box with the Verb, and then on a inventory item and/or an object! ;D Then by pressing enter, the game parses it. Or you could just type it all in! Its up to you.

Will it sell**? Will it fail? Comments welcome, as always.

*Underestimates may occur during transit.
** Metaphorically speaking, of course.
