Wow... 3D graphics in lo res... that must have been painful to resize.... but still, I like! *writes it down on "games to claim owners*cough* must play list " :P*
I must admit, it does look cool, but... the inventory GUI is a little rudimentary. Improve that, add some cursors, tie it up in a bow and they'd go wide eyed and bushy tailed for you in no time!

Wasn't Catcher in the Rye a book title? I had it on my kitchen table this morning ;) Nice to see someone's cultured.

Neutral expression, eh? Don't think I can do that. I use highly animé / japanese style facial expressions, not standard aadventure game style. From top left: Thinking, not impressed, scared, embarressed, annoyed, faceless, flaming ambition, zipped lip, war paint!, exaggerated crying, hunger.

He's not a nazi squirrel. :P He's an eleven year old male amazonian esquan, 4'9", 140lbs. S&m doesn't even come into his vocabulary!

Besides, he doesn't play adventure games.... how DO ropes and salutes connect to Sam and Max? :P

Excellent! I really like that. Now, here is the C+C...

Um... did you draw this from a photo or something? If so, it would help to show us, so we have something to compare with, thus improving the quality of C+C. But if you drew it from real, real life, power to highwaygal! That's hard to do!

Thats all the City and Country we have right now.. but... her left leg below the knee is a bit big, but that could be the cutoff, where you stopped drawing.

And finally!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :P Now you're old enough to... uh... *goes blank* do... stuff. Go celebrate, and celebrate until you can do so no more!

*cough* Rather opinionated today, aren't we people? Everybody knows that different people have different preferences. But, you really should stop making your eyes leak over dispersed liquid bovine offspring feeder. In other words, lets bite the binary code and say:
IF YOU KEEP ARGUING OVER THE OPERATING SYSTEMS, MAKE YOUR OWN! :P

Or just stop bickering.

Oh, and I use Win98SE, MSDOS6.22, and Linux Redhat 9 :P So THERE! Beat that! Hehehe.

Toonstruck, anyone?
"Drew, why are we in an empty pantry?"
"I don't know. It seemed a good idea at the time."

"So, you say the butler is a man who's just a giant..."
"Yeah, I think so."
-talking about the footman :P

Drew: "Gee, it's been such a HARD DAY. We sure could use some cheering up, right, Flux?."
Flux: "We... do?"
Guards: "Oh no! Our friends have a case of the frownies! Time to do our happy dance!"
Flux: "No! No! It hasn't been that hard a day!"

And of course all of Spike the Clown's quotes:
Spike: "You're with the squirrels!"
Drew: "No, I'm not with the squirrels! I'm a double agent! I'm with the resistance! Down with the squirrels! Long live the resistance!"
Spike: "Mommmyy! Theres a strange man in my room talking about squirrels and the resistance!"

"Of course I understand what you're saying, mister Asparagus!"

"Balloooon?"

"Red hot wires in the noodle!"

"When you awake, Ms Fortune, you will have the unsupressable urge to scratch in places you can never quite reach."
"Itch like an alley cat... right."
((It goes on, Drew tells Ms Fortune to swear in the foulest language to Nefarious and co, but use the nicest language and compliments to Drew and co. The next line really is a great punchline:))
"I love what you've done to your hair, master!" :P:P:P

Hehehehe.

Without further ado....

It may look a mite distorted, for dpaint has no square aspect for 320x200. Let me explain my sprites:
Salute - Ryruu salutes. No event connected, just a test to see what I can do with the arms.
Yay high - Ryruu indicates the height of someone he's looking for.
Tied up - no need to explain, but he's struggling.
Investigating - second frame for the bend down and pick up animation.
Guard: Dressed up as an Eden guard. He doesn't fit into the chestplate (the uniform doesn't leave much leaway for husky 4'9" esquans.) and he's holding the Y47 standard military issue stungun.

What do you think? Deluxe Paint really is - the developers choice! So get your copy today and stop using MSPaint! :P

It's not technically possible to change the name of the object, but I think this'll work. Set Global String 1 to the name of the object.

Function repeatedly_execute () {
string buffer;
GetLocationName(mouse.x, mouse.y, buffer);
if (buffer == "Objecttochange") {
SetLabelText (GUI, TEXTOBJ,GetGlobalString (1); }
else {
SetLabelText (GUI, TEXTOBJ, buffer); }

And when you want to change the name of the object:
SetGlobalString (1, "W00t! Itisanotherobject!");

WARNING: Don't trust my scripting skills. Just change what you need.

No jokes. Well, joke if you want. :P That's really my logo! Sorry if it's a bit small, DPainted :P

Here's my own (the things I would say if I were in a computer game. I have a mic and everything :P)

-No, no, and furthermore, no.
-I'm not going to demean myself for your enjoyment.
-My, what an interesting life you must lead.
-I can't do it. I see no way of doing it. So therefore, it can't be done.
-It's against my religion to do that.
-Uuh, no.
-Were you born stupid, or is it something you have to learn?
-I'll stop being sarcastic when you raise your IQ a few hundred points.
-Stupid.
-MISTAKE.
-Yes, you can do that. But it won't improve things.
-Try to think of things that actually work next time.
-What's that Lassie? Push player down a deep mine shaft?
-That is just nonsense.
-Try to put yourself in my position. Would you do that?

But I'm malevolent. :)

Is it, at the moment, possible to create transparencies in 8bit games? I know it can be done, ala DPaint, where the colours underneath the object are darkened depending on what the transparency is. According to my sources, if you have a big enough pallette, and backgrounds that are imported "Exact Pallette", you can make things darker or lighter, like shadows, but I'm not sure about tints. They might mess up the sprite. It would be a great help to be able to have transparencies in Lo-Res, 8bit games... people like me with slow computers would benefit from it!

Also, the Tinted regions with a colorise type function... could that be done in 8bit games too? But bah, I'm not respectable enough to suggest things like that...

General Discussion / Re:Anger
Fri 08/08/2003 22:46:01
Hmm... I don't really get angry. Only viciously malevolent. I snap at people, make nasty comments, growl, and on occasions, roar (I regret it every time I do this). But I can't keep this up. I cry about five minutes after the malevolence kicks in. I hate both feelings, the 'I hate you all, and would kill you if you take one more step towards me', and the 'no, its my fault. Kill me now! Please.. stop the pain...' really don't suit me. Amazingly, its school that makes me crazy, and as its the summer holidays (yaaaaaay) I'm not getting emotional. But, I find the best way to combat that is to think of as many various ways of inflicting major harm to the guilty, then smile evilly as you walk off, having an imaginary anvil fall on the offender's head. Mwahahahahahahahaha! o_O I'm sorry... I just hate schoolkids :)
#833
Now, after a morning of Deluxe Paint (gotta love that pixelly feel!) I managed to create three different charactor sprites for Lo-Res, which was made easier by drawing in the resolution it was going to be played in. This is going to be a reoccuring theme, methinks. :P So, what do you reckon?

Oh, and can someone recommend a free web host w/o ads and has FTP? Bleh... my UK2 website is exploding again...
#834
You may know these three esqonians from previous art forms before. They're the protagonal charactors for Until the Dawn (The insofar mythical game about fur farming in the future, will not start working on it until I've made a few games with AGS,purely because I can't draw backgrounds :)) and also focuses for some of my comics. The picture may look a bit weird and distorted, but thats only because it was drawn in 320x200 res, and we all know those pixels are taller than they are wide. Anywhar:

From the left:
Ryruu, Amazonian Esquan
Kiera-Aurora, Arctic Esquan
Brandt, Desert Esquan

Comments are always welcome. In fact, they are carefully filed away and kept in secrecy until the nine deadly sins are forfilled.

I'm trying to make a custom gui for a.. uh.. game... but I'm failing at one point and one point only. I cannot make Use Inventory 1 with Inventory 2 work. To clarify, using one inventory item with another.

It shows up on the status line, so I think its something to do with the on_mouse_click function... here is my code for on_mouse_click!
function on_mouse_click(int button) {
 // called when a mouse button is clicked. button is either LEFT or RIGHT
 if (IsGamePaused() == 1) {
   // Game is paused, so do nothing (ie. don't allow mouse click)
 }
 else if (button==LEFT) {
   ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_WALK);
   if(GetGlobalInt (1) == 1) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_LOOK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
   else if ((GetGlobalInt (1) == 2) && (player.activeinv != -1)) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_USEINV);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
   else if (GetGlobalInt (1) == 2) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_USE);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
   else if (GetGlobalInt (1) == 3) {
     ProcessClick (mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_TALK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }

   }
 else if ((button == LEFTINV) && (GetGlobalInt (1) == 2)) {
   SetActiveInventory(GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y)); }
 else if ((button==LEFTINV) && (GetGlobalInt (1) == 1)) {
   RunInventoryInteraction (GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y), MODE_LOOK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
 else if ((button==LEFTINV) && (GetGlobalInt (1) == 3)) {
   RunInventoryInteraction (GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y), MODE_TALK);
         SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }
 else if (button == RIGHTINV) {
   RunInventoryInteraction (GetInvAt (mouse.x, mouse.y), MODE_LOOK);
     SetGlobalInt (1, 0);
     SetActiveInventory (-1); }

 else {   // right-click resets the status bar
   SetGlobalInt(1, 0);
 }
}

I'm using Global Int 1 for the gui, by the way.

For your last problem, you can't put text scripts in dialogs. You need to use dialog requests. They are explained in the manual, under Conversations. Do something like this in your Dialog:

// dialog script file
@S // dialog startup entry point
return
@1 // option 1
set - global 1, 1
dialog req 1
stop
@2 // option 2
set - global 1, 2
dialog req 1
stop
@3 // option 3
set - global 1, 3
dialog req 1
stop

And in the function Dialog Request:
if(MODE == 1) && (GetGlobalInt(1) == 1)
{
RestoreGameDialog ();
}
else if(MODE == 1) && (GetGlobalInt(1) == 2)
{
SaveGameDialog ();
}
if(MODE == 1) && (GetGlobalInt(1) == 1)
{
QuitGame ();
}

Check it up in the Manual, I doubt my dialog functions are right.

Maybe its good to check the toolbox twice, maybe thrice?

Those bars on the window need removing. A Hax0r could help you crack that puzzle!

The rope helps you you escape, but you need something to secure it down. I'm sure you could nail this one!

Concept art is the most fun thing I've ever, ever done. But, it's not as easy as putting concept art onto the screen, or making sprites using concept art as the reference piece. Here is how I do mine:

Firstly, I don't draw to start with. That makes ugly, souless charactors. I start by creating their personality. I talk to them (okay, it may seem a little insane, but its the way I'm used to.). After several long and rather insulting conversations with them, and after carrying them around me in my head, them commenting on everything I do, I have a clear mental picture of them. THATS when I start drawing them. And I draw them and draw them and DRAW them! And finally, when it seems like the reflexes to draw the charactor has been imprinted onto my hand, I pixel. First the front view, then the sides and lastly the back.

...

I animate by changing the original pixel art a little bit, and it's easier and smoother than drawing new art for each frame.

Please don't tell anyone how I live! ~Lenny

Trés cartooné :P*! I like this charactor. Reminds me alot of Bud Tucker (cartoony style game, obsolete). One critique: He seems to skip all over the place when he walks... it's as if you have frames missing. If you made it smoother the charactor would be perfect. And that is all!

What's a protagonist?
