Vel: Oh, sorry. I was forgetting the speech. But the game has to be really long to have a CD's worth of speech and music. Sam and Max was 170mb, as was FOTAQ. ;) But, hey. What do I know? :P
#862
Yes, yes. It is possible to put in on CD-ROM. You just need a CD burner or something. Examples of CD-AGS:
Adventures of Fatman

Which I would buy if it weren't for my lack of money and credit card details :P.

But, at the moment, it is extremely hard to do something like you said. I think, you'd have to make two different AGS games, make one not able to run w/o the save file at the right place, or maybe partition the game into:
AGSGame.001
AGSGame.002
And put them on different CDs. But that would mean you'd have to know where each bit ends and begins, and an AGS game over 640mb? Whoaa... no way. No game has been over 30mb insofar. Are you using 800x600 16bit with AVI files all over the place or something? ._. I doubt you'd need all that stuff :P

Awww, I liked the DOS compiler! I think that taking out the DOS version will be a great blow to the Adventure Game Community. I don't know if I'm alone, but I hate windows, and won't get Linux :P. I like using DOS for games, for gods sake! o_O I'm just sad, aren't I?

But, hey. We can just let AGS fall into the ruthless hands of the Microsoft Monopolism of Windows. I support DOS to the end! And you can never stop me!

*hugs copy of DOS 6.0* Miiiiine...

Baby Behemoth:

Okaaay... I've been working my proverbial socks off making these badly animated walk cycles, using only MSPaint and Jasc Animation Shop 3:P (Drop the t on Paint and you have it's description!). This is Baby Behemoth (Or Behemoth, as his charactor is named.) About 7, acts like he's half his age, and best friends with the main charactor (She's only half drawn, so I can't show you her). I imagine him having a husky voice. So, what do you people think?

...

Oh, and he IS a baby. You should see the size of an adult! :)

General Discussion / Re:Other game engines

*click*

Hmm...

*clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick*

I ran out of ammo! ;)

Anyway. I don't mind you using other engines, so long as you don't leave forever. But I don't understand '1st person RPG'. If you're talking about a 3d kinda game, I suggest:

Fly3D

But you can only get V1 (makes .exes) free :(. Also, you can adapt a 3D engine thats for QBasic, but even I can't understand it.

Sorry for not being any help.

But I like other RPG makers like:
OHRRPGCE (nice pallette options (you can make the same picture different colours), 320x200, fast, good multitasking, 256/16 colours, dos based)
RPGToolkit (Excellent quality drawings and import options, 640x480/800x600/1064x574, slow, bad multitasking, windows based)
Sphere (Like RPGToolkit, but with better multitasking and alpha transparency.)

;) Hope that helps!

Critics' Lounge / Re:background c+c

...

OMG. Like, wow. That is brilliant. I like the way you made the background itself look so detailed in 2d, then made the car look like Sam and Max style 3D. ;) Brilliance. Utter brilliance. I wish I could draw like that :(

*looks at pitiful attempts at drawings and cries*

Ahem, anyway. Critique.. um... uh.. the car actually looks out of place in that scene, and even though it looks cool, 3D and stuff, due to its lack of shading (even though I applaud your effort, which is far better than mine) it looks like its in the wrong light. The shape is perfect, though. Keep at it! :)

Woo Discworld! :) I love the books, and the games too :P. References in the first two games (I haven't played Noir), are very widespread. Being a DW fan myself, I noticed most of them. Hehe. Your article _really_ did the games justice. BUT. You can drink in DWII. Its in the Trolls Head. You use the Tankard of Beer with Rincewind. ;) And for your nxt DW article, include The Colour of Magic - The ORIGINAL original game :P. Although, its not very widely known as it was for the C64. Very nice. Keep it up!
#869
Its a good idea, but I'm not sure its AGS friendly. Because, if you have a font for each charactor, you need to have an outline font for each. And if you have a large amount of them, it could easily eat up memory and probably you'd run out of font slots.

...

Or I could be talking nonsense. I don't have a copy of AGS on this computer! Damn it all! o_O

Hehe.. :P I got lotsa art for you. Not all of it is adventure game art, though. In fact, most of it isn't! I just wanna show you my work.

BEHEMOTH: (One of the charactors in the MD.NET Comics)

A Lo-Res picture, made in MSPaint and OHRRPGCE's graphics editor.(Its got high saturation due to me using QBasic's 256 colour pallette.) Its for my really OLD style RPG.

Just a lil'muckaround, seeing if I can get my charactor to look like a baby. It worked.

The original pixel art for the charactor.

Another muckaround, not really successful.

DRAGONS: (My trademark creatures)

A load of dragon pics I did as avatars. Same they are too large :P

Heh... the talking profile for my game ;)

BEARS: (well... Esquans)

Two charactors for a game that probably will never be made. :(

Well? What do you think of my art? C+C is recorded and will be used against you in any court of law, but is always welcome :P

General Discussion / Re:Your idea of Hell
Sun 11/05/2003 16:16:41
Hell would be full of boredom. You see, pain is part of the body, and if you are tortured in hell, you spirit will only 'think' it is being hurt. But boredom, that bores way down to the depths of your inner sanctum and out the other side. Eternity feeling like an eternity. Demons almost falling asleep droaning on and on reading up to the million times table (unless you're an arithmaphile, in which case they'd read from the dictionary). Never being able to switch off, fall asleep, or ignore it, infinitely long textbooks about nothing, speeches which would knock you out cold in three words, and finally... it would all be in black and white.

THAT is hell.

Here it is... some artwork and concepts! Yay! I really need crits on these.. for it isn't easy to have a review saying my artwork sucks :P. The adventure itself is in two parts. One is the 1st person view puzzle solving bit, where you pick up objects and use them accordingly. This is the most part of the game. The second is the world map. You are in top view here, like an RPG. There is also a battle system, but its still to be implemented, if at all. Don't worry about the world map, its just things like city streets which have no meaning at all(The city you're in is "Ingleheim". One of the places in my game series) and grassland and stuff, like in Simon1, and unlike Simon 3D, where you could roam around for ages lost.

Matiireiin (Dragon):
Matiireiin (pronouced Mat-ere-rein or shortened to Mat) is a dragon who has doubts about a legend. (This legend was, that there was an abandoned theatre where an actor died. This also co-incides with the undead, who have been prophecised to return to power.)
He sets out with his predictable leather bag and goes to find this derilict theatre.

No breathin' flame or flying for this type of dragon...

THE INTERFACE:
The interface is based on a gui at the bottom of the screen, but instead of 'use item with object', you just have ACTION OBJECT or INVENTORY on OBJECT. And instead of just interact, which sometimes brought up saying they're too weak, you can now KICK the object! Yay! Here's the inventory gui (I'm using floppies... so I can't transport that much at a time.)

And the statistics gui (You'll notice this is for 320x240, my favourite res.)

THE ROOMS:

And finally, here is a taster of a room (Sister's bedroom). I can't give too much away, though :), so no objects or scary toys like it will have in the real thing.

And here is a cutscene snippet of getting a glyph (extra ability)

I apologize for the bmps, my GIF converter screwed up x_x

I'm a 2D person too. :) I prefer looking to see what effort the artist have put into pixel pushing everything into perfection (EG MI, StS, everything 2D), than see a crudely drawn blocky whatsisface crawl around, although perfectly animated, but also mocking everything I stand for. Also, you can draw 2D freehand and its not so fustrating when it all goes belly-up.

3D drawings are a cop-out. 2D all the way! And I'm not biased, you know :P.

QuoteSimon is now in this strange world and has drunk in this games only a cup of coffee some soda bottles and only eaten a fruit.

You're wrong! He ate a mushroom too :P

'K. I'm helping my dad bring his PC company from the grave. He has a server, ready for customers, but, woe betide, he knows nothing about computers. I was thinking, what do people want in a web host? I, myself, want:
PHP/MySQL (Downloadable from respective site)
Plentyful Space (1000mb? Whee!)
a CGI-BIN (Probably free)
FTP (?)
Subdomains (Yay!)

But what do you want? I've gotta sort this mess out before he abandons the project! And please, keep it real and sensible. I can't give a million mb of space for 1p.

(Oh, and he's charging 50 pounds/ year)

This IS an IF game. I just can't draw feet. Or shoes. Bleh.

Game Name: Until the Dawn (I am but a slave, and many a skin I have to save)

NEW SPECIES: Esquan
Esquans are bear like creatures, probably an Anthromorph, and are just about less intelligent than the average human (needless to say, there will be one or two humans who are less intelligent than an Esquan. I can name a few.) They come in three main types:
Amazon - Ryruu is an Amazonian Esquan. They can climb, but prefer to stay on the ground. They have learnt how to use weapons against predators, but don't hunt, as they are mostly herbivores, although they can eat meat, like fish. These are brown, some with black.

Arctic - Kyra is an Arctic Esquan.  These white furred creatures thrive in cold, icy tundras, located where the sun shines least, at the two poles and the Desert Glaciers (Where there is ice so thick it cannot be melted.) These do eat meat, and can survive three weeks without food nor water. But that has happened only on rare occasions, as you just have to dig to find frozen fish where they live. They are either white or very light blue.

Desert - Juuten is a Desert Esquan. These have the least fur, and have wide feet to stop them sinking into the sand of the deserts. They also have padded hands, to stop themselves getting hurt while trying to sabotage cactuses and hunting prey. Of all the Esquans, these are the most diverse, as they can 'soak' up heat to use in the night, like a solar panel. They are mostly beige furred, but some are black.

Synopsis (I love that word :P):
It is the year sometime in the future, where mankind has discovered how to travel deep into space and back again using The Infinity Theory. Fur has been made illegal to farm all across earth, since all furry animals (sparing hyenas) were hunted to exinction during the Fur Rush of 2009. So, one person, hungry for money, decided: "Illegal on earth, eh? What about on other planets?" and he found a loophole in the law.

Some time later, in the Amazonic forests of another planet:
Suddenly, from out of the sky came a giant flying ship, glowing in the midday suns. It landed mercilessly on one of our huts, and from the ship came an alien, dressed all in white. And he declared:
MN: Bow down to me! I am your god!
And he gave us a new holy book and commented on our silky fur. And as we opened the book, it read:
"Rule 1: Manage your fur in a proper way. NO dirt or stains shall be left on you.
Rule 2: Eat fish. It will help keep your fur nice.
Rule 3: Those who have the best fur will be rewarded, and taken to the fac... Better Place.
RULE 4: DISOBEDIENCE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED."
He explained about the Beauty Pagent, and how the winner will be sent on 'holiday'. It all seemed so perfect. And since our last 'god' wanted to have sacrifices of consumables every day, We did adopt him. Later, a great flood wiped out most of our crops, but our God saved us from perishing by making fish out of thin air! And then, when wild animals attacked, he created coloured fire that lit up the sky, and it made noise like  a bird at first, and then it was louder than the loudest thunderoll. It scared us, and the animals daren't ever come back to us. Of course, we didn't know then what he was doing.

The Aftermath and Ryruu's conspiracy theory
It is the second morning in the day, and there is a congregation of three Amazonian Esquans round a wooden table. The eldest (EL) is tall, with worn eyes and a scowl to match. The youngest (YN) of them is small, with pigtails and a face that said: "I'm ready to cry at any moment." . The last, is Ryruu (RY). Eleven, brown, and he was picking at his plate, which contained only raw fish.

RY: I'm sick of this stuff. Why can't we have something else?
EL: Because its the Lore to have fish on a Tuesday.
RY: And every other day of the week.
YN: Daddy! Ryruu is disobeying the Lore again!
EL: Ryruu! I'm ashamed of you! If you don't eat your fish you won't have very good fur!
RY: Why do they want us to have good fur?
YN & EL: Its the Lore.
RY: But why is it the Lore?
YN: Shut up! You're going to get Him angry!
RY: I'm fed up of this! You're all so conformative!
EL: GET OUT! If you're not going to obey HIM, think about it and then change your mind! And don't come back until you've changed your mind!
Ryruu walks out of his house into the village, where some Esquans are constructing a crude statue of their 'God'
RY: Why? Why does he want us to be so vain? I must go see the wise Esquan. He'll know of this.

And, sure enough, the wise old Esquan did have some Earthly books that the 'God' had discarded. And what they told facinated and horrified Ryruu. But, alas, as they looked at each page, it crumbled to dust, as all badly made books do after years of neglect. It showed them fashion. What people were wearing, and to the horror of the two, this year, Esquan was in fashion.

:P What do you think?

General Discussion / Re:Simpsons 300th Episode
Wed 23/04/2003 18:01:16
The best cartoons never become successful. :P Its proven, and all! Even though I've watched the show almost religiously for 10 years, yes, the jokes have become stupid and offensive. And I didn't get to watch the 300th episode... lucky me.  My favourite cartoons as a small child were Sam and Max, Earthworm Jim, and some other, unnamable ones (I forget them). They had classic humour, unlike some of the manufactured cartoons we have today. And the best cartoons aren't exploited, either. Sam and Max had three things. A comic, a TV Show, and a Game. All the jokes were classic... BECAUSE it didn't have too many episodes. Futurama... what did happen to it? I have Terrestrial TV, so only 5 channels here, excluding Video and PS2. Whee! I want to create a cartoon show, because I want to be an animator when I grow up.

FOOTNOTE:
Showing repeats 5 times a week does help either. :P

FOOTFOOTNOTE:
Sam 'n' Max ROCKS! I only remember one episode though.

Beginners' Technical Questions / Re:SCUMM
Wed 23/04/2003 16:15:39
I thought SCUMM was the sub-programming language LEC used for their games... or am I mistaken? :P But if you pre-squash the background, I guess you could put the GUI on the bottom :P
#879
Yes, after literally seconds* of procrastination, I have come up with a sink-or-swim kind of game GUI. But will it hold up against your comments? And has it been done before on AGS?

PARSE-AND-CLICK!

Heres a brief explanation of the interface: It combines the flexibility of the Text Parser, and the simplicity of the Point and Click... without word guessing or limited choices. You simply click on a button to fill the Text Box with the Verb, and then on a inventory item and/or an object! ;D Then by pressing enter, the game parses it. Or you could just type it all in! Its up to you.

Will it sell**? Will it fail? Comments welcome, as always.

*Underestimates may occur during transit.
** Metaphorically speaking, of course.
