I had bought this game for my wifey for Christmas.

I have played it quite a bit today myself and am growing fond of it. It's pretty neat, eventhough I don't see any point in it thus far.

So I was wondering do any AGSers have this game and an online connection? I've been looking around for friends codes, but I'd feel safer having someone from here to connect to instead of someone out of nowhere.

And also, what else is there to do with this game? Does your town get bigger? Can you add more houses/buildings/structures/etc...? I"m guessing it's pretty much an endless type of environment.

If you are interested in swapping codes, please PM me.

Thank you!

Hello there, again,

I finally got the RAM I ordered. I just put it in and I don't think it's being recognized. I right clicked on "My Computer" and properties and it still says I have 512MB of RAM when it should be just over a Gig.

I shut down and made sure it was pushed in all the way and still it says 512MB.

What in the name of God am I doing wrong? Is it possible to perchace the wrong kind of RAM? I looked up RAM for Dell Dimention 2400 and was recommended what I bought.

The brand is G.Skill, if that helps.

Thank you for any help before I pull my remaining hair out.

Yesterday I bought "Portal" for my step son for Christmas. I also must admit that I found it quite interesting myself ;)

I was wondering if those of you that have it, if it works alright with basic video cards. I'd like to know if it'll work before he opens it so I can still return it. I made the same mistake with F.E.A.R... I bought it without thinking. Now I'm stuck with it until I get an abled video card.

You see, I'm still stuck in Return to Castle Wolfenstien "days", which is, for me, thinking that anything should work if you put it in 640x400 and shut off all the special effects stuff (which is what I had to do on my older computer). Wolfenstien works great on the computer I've got now in 1024x768 with all the effects on running on the video card that came with it.
F.E.A.R starts up with sound, but no visuals. I'm afraid that Portal will do the same thing.

The minimum specs for Portal are:
1.7 GHz Processor
512MB RAM
DirectX 8 level Graphics Card
Windows Vista/XP/2000

Recommended System Requirements:
Pentium 4 processor (3.0 GHz or better)
1GB RAM
DirectX 9 Level Graphics Card
Windows Vista/XP/2000

I've got:
Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz Processor
512MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c
Windows XP Home Edition
note: The graphics card is the Intel card that came with the computer.

Now my first guess is that it'll work with some alterations in the graphics tab.

But I just want to be sure that it'll even start so I can see the options menu, unlike F.E.A.R, or at least an external graphics setup option.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, guys,

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition

So far I found out that if I zip the folder containing the file I can add a password to that, but that's not what I want to do. I would like to have a single text file require a password before viewing it's contents.

Is there a way to do this in Windows without having to download any programs?

I know that in Word you can have a password, but I'm almost sure that if I saved it as a word document that it wouldn't work anymore - it can't have any funky characters in it, it must stay as a plain text file.

The file that I have is the Hosts file and I open it with Notepad. And the reason for wanting a password is so that I am the only one who is waranted to edit it.

Much thanks in advance.

/--EDIT--/
I've been searching for an answer all morning but I've been unable to find anything besides the zipping idea and that Word allows a password.

Critics' Lounge / Need coloring suggestions...
Fri 31/10/2008 16:13:32
I'm having a conflict with myself with how I want to color my BGs.

The following BG is how I intended the style to be in the very beginning, which I still love:

How I did it was I made a quick scetch, really not detailed at all. I scanned it, resized it (to 320x200) and opened it in paint. Changed it to a monochrome image (to turn every line black and to get rid of the "fuzzies") then changed it back to a 24bit image.
From there I changed the lines to a light grey and then I colored and edited it as I went.

I've got some new BGs I (example below), but drew them with detail. The bummer is, I LOVE how they turned out in 320x200. I would like to keep the detail the way I drew it (instead of doing it over again in Paint), but I don't know how to color it.

What do you guys suggest? Should I scan again and color it in it's original state and then resize? I guess that seems like the logical way to go... but I don't know.

I guess my conflict is, I love all the detail in my new BGs, but also love the original BGs' style.

Thanks for any suggestions,

I'm going to take a stab at the dark and ask if anyone has a copy of my primitive AGS demo, "The Life of Marty Shore"?

I happened to think of it this morning and I don't have it saved anywhere on any discs and it's not in the AGS Games Database.

*sorry if I stabbed anyone...

Hey, guys,
I don't know when but I'm going to get myself a copy of Mario Kart Wii. I loved the SNES and 64 version (I'm thrilled that they have a couple SNES and N64 courses in the retro section!) and I can't wait to play MK Wii online with other people.

So until I grab myself a copy of it I'm trying to play Mario Kart 64 online using Project64k.
I was wondering if anybody here plays it? If so, do you have a specific server I can join that you use and maybe some time we can play a GP or battle?

I just started to try this out and haven't had the pleasure of playing anybody yet.

And Boyd, if I remember right, you've got Mario Kart Wii, right? Would it be alright if I had your Wii number for when I get it (I'll show you mine if you show me yours ;) )?
Anyone else?

Hey, guys,

Recently we've got hit with a bunch of virus'. I've uninstalled Defender Pro (expired months ago) and downloaded Avast!. It found/deleted a shite-load of virus' and spyware. The computer is working better than it has in a long time, but once in a while, google won't "google" (or any other search engine) and I can't check my yahoo email (has to be done in Safe Mode - like I am right now).

Coincidentally a few days ago, a family member of mine had a computer that died and they are bringing me the restore disc this weekend.

The drawback is that, if I remember right, their Dell Dimension was a 2300 or 2500 (can't remember exactly) and mine is a Dell Dimension 2400.

Would I still be able to do a factory restore? I'm thinking not.

If I can, that would be great. It beats paying a $150 for someone to do something a monkey could do.

Thanks,

I've been pondering this thought for a while now.

For a game project that is high in character detail and backstory (game will remain nameless), I've got a well written intro scene that closely resembles how a novel would be written. I didn't intentionally do this when I started, but I kept editing it and adding detail - now I'm not sure how I would put this in to the game.

I've got what the character is thinking, remembering and also details about the scene.

My question is how do you guys put these scenes into cutscenes in your game?

From my point of view, no matter how well I try to do it, the scene in the game won't compare to the written version. I know this is true with a lot of books being turned into movies, but how would you go about such a thing?

I was wondering, besides big objects and a poor machine, what can cause the game to run slow? The game is at 320x240 resolution.

My game is Castle of Fire - where you run from bridge to dungeon collecting the treasures. If you've played the past versions you'll know what game.

I'm thinking it's my computer because it never slowed down before. The only time it did was when the player was sent back to the beginning after completing all the levels and doing this about 3 or four times. I can understand why this may cause slow-down.
I have taken this aspect out of the game for the new version but now it is running slow again.

It only runs slow during the dungeon rooms and not until about the 5th or 6th dungeon.
Is it possible that scripts from other rooms are still being executed? I haven't heard of this before if so.

I have 1 room with 1 enormous object that is animating (Huge Lava Pit), 1 room with 4 lava pits animating (not really that big, but big enough to tell about I suppose), and 2 rooms with 1 room-sized object being turned on and off.
I should mention though, that these rooms never ran slow before. It seems it is happening way before these rooms are loaded.

Recently I turned the memory back down to default (20mb) and am convinced I need to turn it back up again.

If I choose to split the recource files, should this gain speed? From what I've read, yes, but I figured I'd ask while I'm here.

What else can be making the game run slow?

Like I said, I have a feeling it's my computer (it's been running slow lately), but I was wondering what else it could possibly be?

I have no means of testing this game on a different computer unless I have someone from here test it.

I remember Chris telling me he wanted to take a look at it when it was finished (from when I had posted about this from the last version). If you still want to, Chris, if you have the time, then you are more than welcome.

//--EDIT--//
I just turned the memory back up to 100mb but now the whole game is jittery and skips. There is also a big pause before sending the player to the next room.

Thanks in advance,

Critics' Lounge / My newest sketch of a song
Thu 05/06/2008 16:49:09
Hey,

I downloaded a sample drum loop off one of those sites where you can buy CDs full of loops and quickly made a song.
I'm actually pretty proud of how it came out.

If you want to hear, click the link below:
It'll lead you to my MySpace page (which I'm rarely on) and the song should load right away. When the guitars fade out and the drums stop, the songs done. I forgot to clip off the excess when I exported the song.
Sketch with Drums

You can tell me what you think, shit on it, I don't care. It recorded a hell of a lot better than the rest of my lame songs ;)

To avoid looking like a complete idiot, I searched and searched the manual - I even googled it - but I can't find the answer.

How do you put repeatedly_execute_always() in the room script?

I know how to do it in the global script, but this seems to confuse me.

I'm afraid I'm going to corrupt my game since when I look in the script editor of the room there's a bunch of lines that say "do not edit or remove this line".

Do I create a new segment like this one?
Code: ags

#sectionstart room_c  // DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS LINE
function room_c() {
  // script for Room: Repeatedly execute

If so, I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. The manual doesn't explain to me HOW to put this in a room - it just says that I can.

Thank you,

Please, help will be super appreciated.

Hey, guys - again,

Now, at the end of a mini game I want the difference between the player score and the CPU score to be added to the number of points on the title screen of the mini game.
When you initially start, you have 0 points (called, Earned Points).

So, let's say you won 10 to 5. The difference is 5, so this will be added to the final score on the title.

If your earned points were at 0, then it would now be 5.

Now, let's say you play again and lose 6-7. The difference is 1. This is now going to have to be taken away from your earned points; 5-1=4.
I'm also guessing that it doesn't matter if you check if playerscore is higher or lower than cpuscore since adding -1 to 5 is going to be 4 anyway. If it's not, I'm even more of an idiot when it comes to math than what I thought.

The player and cpu score variables are:
playerscore
cpuscore

The gui's label that displays your earned points on the title screen is named, epoints.

At the end of the game I need the difference of playerscore and cpuscore and add it to epoints.

I already know how to display the points, so don't worry about explaining that.

Doing it this way...:
Code: ags

epoints.Text = String.Format("%d",playerscore-cpuscore);

...works if I wanted the previous score of each game, but I want it added to it (like earning money and actually being able to keep it), and this is where I'm stuck.

Thanks in advance, help is much appreciated,

I've been using Adobe Audition for years (used to be CoolEdit Pro) to record my music. My music consist of just guitars, lead, rhythm, one song has a bass riff. Sadly no drums :)

I'm in need for some pointers and tips on recording my guitar properly - equalizing, sound level, etc...

I burned some of my songs onto a CD yesterday afternoon and I'm not too sure if it's my radio or I'm just not recording right. My music sounds okay on the computer but when I heard it on the radio it seemed to be "cloudy" and/or "muffled". It also sounds like it is more on the left side than the right, but in Adobe, both the left and right side waves are equal.
When I record it also records a tad below the center line instead of perfectly centered (in the wave window). What am I doing wrong?

Here's what I've got:

*I've got a Gibson Epiphone.
*I'm using a DOD effects processor (oldie - only one bank button works).
*I'm recording through the sound input jack - not the microphone jack.
*I open up recording options in Volume Control in Windows and record through Stereo Output. The microphone seems to be too loud and I can't adjust it, it seems.
*I'm a fan of using AcousticDuet when using no chorus through the processor.

So how do you guys record your guitar and make it sound good? No matter what I do, it's not clear and sounds like crap on the radio. I still have one more radio to test it on and it's a stereo, but I doubt I'll get different results.

I also have a grunge distortion pedal by Digitech that I could use if you think it might be a conflick between the DOD's and Adobe's equalizers.

So any tips and tricks? How do you get your guitar to sound like it's been professionally recorded? I've heard some of your music around here in past years and it sounds like you recorded it in a fucking recording studio :)

And thank you for any tips that you guys give me,

I feel like a complete idiot. I used to know how to do this. I always did it when the mouse was over a certain hotspot and change the graphic.

How do I script if an object/character or mouse is over a hotspot?

If I remember right it's something like:
if (object[1].x==hPic.x) {code}//I know it's not that, but the idea is the same...

I've tried all sorts of different ways but I can't get it to work. I wish I could find my old discs with my old games on it.

I only need the code for an object, but I assume that it's the same with everything.

Thanks in advance and sorry for such a dumb question :-\

My step son found it on the school bus, ended up getting a better one for Christmas and so he gave this one to me:

There's no name on it anywhere.
I've googled it's description and found nothing. I've looked in the "About" section for it and it says:
Code: ags

Sdk ver:
  3.120.202
Int Media
       930MB

I looked up both things and found nothing that relates to mp3 players.

If this helps:
Once you turn it on you'll see a little animation of this character (looks like a maybe a squirrel or a bear? It goes too quick - he/she's blue and orange) snow boarding to one side of the screen to the other. After turning it off an animation plays of a paper airplane hovering by a house.

The options of this device include:
Music
FM Tuner
Voice
Erase Files
Jpeg Display
Motion Video
Settings
Record
Text Browser
About

I'd like to be able to find a manual on this thing and learn what file formats the video/text have to be in, if I can change the opening and closing animations and how to organize my music - right now it just keeps mixing all of them together, no matter how many folders I create.

Thank you to anyone who knows what company makes these mp3 players.

//--EDIT--//
I have a feeling it might be Samsung, but I can't find it anywhere. All the pictures of samsung mp3 players seem to have the same controls with the "M" (menu) on the stick.

Hey,

I've been using geocities for my site for the longest time. I've forgotten my password and for some reason PageBuilder won't work with Opera or Internet explorer (IE - it has worked before, but won't now...for whatever reason).

I'd like to start a new site and actually keep it updated this time.

So after googling for like 2 hours now, I can't find anything I like. I've signed up for Freewebs but it doesn't seem to be as customizable as yahoo. I also tried 110mb.com - which sounded very promising - but I didn't understand a damn thing. I guess they didn't have a site builder thing...

So, can anyone suggest any site hosts that have a thing such as PageBuilder (like Yahoo) and is easy to create a page from scratch? Somewhere I can upload photos of my games?
I'd like to create a site very similar to the one that I have already created.

Thank you,

Alright, I've been meaning to vent about this for a long time.

Recently I've seen I Am Legend. And it was the last straw that made me want to post about this even more.
It was an OK movie, but what really ruined it for me was all the computerized graphics, especially for all the infected people.

Are computer graphics in movies just taking over, or what?

I think it looks so goddamn fake and unrealistic - and way too "animated".

In I Am Legend it looks like they had Disney do all of it for Christ sakes. It totally ruined it. The way they had the infected scream with their mouths wide open and shaking like a character in any computerized kid's movie... BAH, it pissed me off. I won't get started on the infected dogs...

Why is there so much do you think? Is it just the easy way out? I'm not saying computerized graphics is easy or not time consuming - it just looks so fake and cheesy - especially when it's thrown into a movie that is supposed to be serious. Is taking the time to make a "zombie" look "real" with make-up, props and other do-dads so damn time consuming where they think, ah, fuck it, let's just make them all computerized...?

One of my all-time favorite movies is The Return of the Living Dead. Those zombies looked so "life-like".... it made it that much more real and scary for me. I have yet to see a zombie movie that looks as fucking good as that.

What are your feelings about CGI in movies?

Hi, guys,

I've been working on a small piece of code in the rep ex script in a room.

I'd like a timer to be set (ie; to 100) whenever the player has stopped moving.
When this timer ends I want to display a messege - unless he has moved again before the timer has run out.

I couldn't seem to work around my int standing always equaling 1 to process my code afterwords.

So I've been fiddling with it and it seems to half-assed work.

1. I don't understand why it is working since I want the code to run when the character is standing still, not moving...(as you'll see in my code below)

2. Everything seems to work fine except for when I press enter to exit the display messege. The timer doesn't seem to reset back to 100 after the messege. But if I walk again and stop, it works (even if I exit the messege using an arrow key).
Just not when I press enter.

Here's my code so you can take a lookie at what the hell I'm missing ;)
Code: ags

///STANDING STILL OR NOT
if (character[1].Moving==1) standing++;
if (character[1].Moving==0) standing=0;

if (standing!=0) {
  standing=0;
  SetTimer(17, 100);
}

if (IsTimerExpired(17)==1){
  Display("stuff");
  cpuscore++;
  standing++;
}

Thanks in advance for any help,
