General Discussion / Re: World of Warcraft
Sat 09/10/2010 02:23:51
I agree with Bulbapuck, but not entirely since I always liked the idea of WoW. I've read through the manual and it got me really interested, but I couldn't get passed the whole idea of having to pay monthly for it.
Also, I was awfully addicted to an MMORPG a couple years ago called FLYFF. Christ, I'd play that all day long. I finally got away from it long enough to lose interest. If you wanted to play that, Calin, maybe I'd reconsider. Maybe. I think I would be too worried I'd get back into it again all the time though.

Oh, and for christ sakes, Leafshade, LET'S PLAY FUCKING MARIO KART! I would love to be in a bunch of races with only AGSers slinging shells at each other ;D Man, it would be a blast.

But since Boyd has mysteriously disappeared, I am apparently the only loser around here who plays it.

\\--EDIT--//
And Dualsie, it is entirely a coincidence that I am posting directly after you. Again.

That is great, SpacePirateCain, I've now changed that to my AGS link in my Opera speed dial ;D

If I may make a suggestion, instead of this message under the Windows 98, 95, ME portion of downloads:
Sorry, but AGS no longer runs on these versions of Windows. Upgrade to XP!

Why not list the last version of AGS that does? I'm sure there are people out there that still use Win98 and can't (for whatever reasons) simply upgrade to XP... or just plain don't want to.

Quote from: DualnamesA. I need lots of beta-testers to fix any chances of bugs that might ruin this.
This was only an idea that sparked after I read the above quote (I didn't think about it much), but, after it's beta tested and ready to go, why not test it for the first time with a pre-awards show type thing? Have it like an hour or even a couple hours before hand. People can log in, hang around and chat for a bit and see if anything major occurs that can be fixed before the actual show?

This is a bit of a touchy subject I believe.

It all depends on the game with me.
Logically, unless conceived/described or narrated correctly, I don't like having the protagonist be able to pick up items that he/she has no idea what they will use them for, only because the PLAYER knows. Just a simple click with the interaction cursor and "You pick up the half eaten apple out of the trash...", doesn't cut it for me. I think the character should know why they are picking something up or fiddling with something. There needs to be a reason. But on the other hand, if it's a comical game or just plain light-hearted, it's never bothered me.

There is also the "It's an adventure game, that's what you're supposed to do. You fill your inventory with everything you come across, because if you can pick it up, most likely you will need it later."
Whilst I agree with this for the most part, does it really need to be a staple for adventure games? I believe adventure games are, and always have been, story oriented. Being able to pick everything up off the floor sometimes ruins it for me, not completely - more temporary really.
Or maybe I just play them different. I hate seeing something and immediately interacting with it. The #1 rule when I play is to examine it first and decide if I need it after words - which can obviously get me into trouble with some games (like if I've got to travel long distances to retrieve that item, remembering where I saw it or if I've gotten myself into a dead end), but it makes me feel more immersed I guess, giving me an option of whether or not I want to pick it up or not.

And of course restricting the player completely and making them have to do something else or look at the item before hand can frustrate the player. I learned that lesson with my Matt to the Future game demo I released last Christmas. One player knew he needed a specific item, but he couldn't pick it up until he did something else.

It all boils down to the type of game and personal taste, I suppose. You can design the game however you want, but some players may not agree with your logic of puzzle design and the way they are able to interact with the game world, no matter what you do anyway.

Vince, I'm going to burn you at the stake for saying such ridiculous things. You've still got "Best Non-Adventure" to at least being a nominee in, JACKASS!!1  ;D

QuoteThere's nothing more numbing and basically atmosphere killing than making a game (platformer) so precise and unforgiving that the player has to remember every every move they have to make.
Like for example...
Skip to 7:08. It is all memorization.

Great start mode7! It is VERY Prince of Persia.

\\--EDIT--//
I remember the lightning part of that level being a lot longer than that :P

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Re: AGS facts

I think that a cool AGS fact could be all the members of the forum that have some variation of "Chasing the Dream" under their avatar.

Holy fuck how I look forward to this book!

"The Art of Sierra" (interview with author at The Artful Gamer).

I agree!
QuoteWilly Beamish’s little suburban neighbourhood and treehouse was a real place to hide out in. The art, the animation, the music and voices, all conspired to create a place for daydreaming.
That game was what inspired me want to make adventure games myself!
(or try, I should say)

This aught to be a great read  ;D

QuoteWilly Beamish fans are in for some real surprises with The Art of Sierra!
I am as excited as a kid on Christmas!

It is great to hear that you are still working on this game! I loved the demo and am highly anticipating it's eventual release. Speaking of, any idea when that will be?

General Discussion / Re: Something Deadly

Jesus, I feel bad for that guy who lost his entire family and friends :(

I went mushroom picking once with my step dad YEARS ago. I even had a little key to tell me what they were. It was really fun.

I used to love A Christmas Tale! I'm glad you found it, Leon ;D

I personally like everything I look at to have a description. Depending on the game, everything that you look at, the protagonist is looking at. I love to know how they perceive particular objects, especially during certain situations. It doesn't always have a direct purpose to progress the storyline, or the current puzzle, but everything you examine is a portal to these character's worlds. There is no other way to get there but through them.

You should have a hotspot for everything that looks like something, because you know that somebody, somewhere, is going to click on whatever the fuck that is in the corner.

\\--EDIT--//
A very small example of what I'm talking about is, take that sword handle that looks like it has a happy face on it. I would definitely click on that, wondering what I was going to get for a response. I would absolutely be nothing more than discouraged if all I got was, "A couple swords lay here in the corner.", if anything at all. GAH.

YAY!!

I will check it out soon :D Thank you VERY much!

I think it's great! I love the new look you've found for Davy, and hopefully for the rest of the RON characters as well! You've squashed him down a bit, which really really works, and the black clothes and gray shoes retain the classic Davy Jones look.

I've edited it:

All I did was move the neck back one pixel on the right and edited a few pixels on the face and ear. Compare and contrast! Hopefully what I've done helps :)

The online aspect of this sounds interesting.

Looks great, Icey! I really do like the look of your screens :)

Good luck with it's completion!

You have spelled Matt the the Future (demo) when it is supposed to be to the ;)
Well, I know the title of MttF is wrong but I mostly leave the titles as how they are added to the ags database.
Seems you spelled it wrong while adding it to the ags database... :P
Well look at who's the horse's ass, eh? Fixed. Thanks for bringing it to my attention and setting me straight!

Quote from: LeonNot that the game can be found .... but still ;)
Hahaha! I actually found it a while back. Now I've got to see if I can find it again... not that there's any real point in it.

Quote from: AndailBut it's very much a completed, playable full-length game (albeit of mediocre quality)
Don't worry about this "mediocre quality" you speak of. The Tulles World games were great, and in my opinion, AGS classics :=
#537
Were has the demo gone?
#538
Great list, Arj0n! It's fun to look through all these games :)

Two things:
You have spelled Matt the the Future (demo) when it is supposed to be to the ;)

Also, I couldn't find The Original Leitor's Edge listed anywhere...

\\--EDIT--//
Oh, and you can add The Life of Marty Shore (beta demo) to the list.

Sounds like a big clusterfuck to me, Calin. Just have the author's add their games themselves.
