I like it when you call me a loser, Calin :P Heh, I know I haven't posted in the McCarthy thread yet, but I'll get to it, okay? I will!

I did find a Knoppix download a little bit after posting anyway. I'm going to try tomorrow. It's version 6.2. Is that good enough?

And yeah, Poc, it is a drive with WinME installed on it and the system I am trying to read it on is WinXP Home. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

Thank, guys, I'll post some time in the morning when I try out Knoppix.

I'll try out Knoppix. It never worked on my Win98 computer, but I'll try it on this one.

Thanks, Calin.

\\--EDIT--\\

Alright. I can't find the CD I made and now I'm having a miserable time trying to find a knoppix download... any help?

Yeah, I know, another one of these threads by me.

I'll try and get to the point and not drag on like I usually do:

I've got a Maxtor (now they call themselves Seagate) hard drive that I want to access my old files on.

I've hooked it up to the computer as the primary slave, changed jumper settings and BIOS and started it up. Slow as all hell while it's recognizing the drive and so on, not a problem - I've got some patience left over in my reserve.

I click on it and every time it wants me to format it. Grrreat.

So I did some googling and found that sometimes the computer will give "removable" drives the same letter as one already installed and that may cause a problem. So I renamed it, like it said in the document, to Z instead of F from within Data Management.

This didn't seem to do anything. At first it says that the drive cannot be found, but then it finds it. Then the same routine with it wanting to be formatted.

Now, from within Data Management, it shows that the drive is healthy and that it is active. Why does it want me to format it? I want to get files off the drive, not erase them.

The drive:
It is a Maxtor n256 with 60GB.
Windows ME installed (I'm thinking this is where some problems are occuring?)
I have also experimented and changed the jumper to cable select and that didn't do anything either.

I'm thinking the drive is simply damaged or I'm not setting it up right to view the files.

Any help out there?

Duals, it's funny that you remember how I had spelled, MoNKeY WReNCH, but you claim you've never seen a screenie??

Here
and
Here

To Goldfish
MoNKeY WReNCH was a game Squinky (old member) and I were colaborating on quite a few years back. Trapezoid (old member) was composing the soundtrack for it.
Of course it never got finished, but it is the game Dualnames is refering to. It was about a boy named, Hirum, who got transformed into a monkey by the evil scientist, Dr. Lumpkin Glumpkin. He meets up with a girl named Allie O' Leary (don't mind the perkiness) and they set off together to find this scientist and transform Hirum back to normal. This game is one of my babies and I must admit that it seems very very awkward to have found a game with the same title in the GiP forum just now...

I guess that's what I get. Maybe in another 7 or 8 years some one will post about a game they are working on called, The Legend of Leitor's Edge (heh, wouldn't THAT be a great April Fool's joke).

Looks interesting, Goldfish. Just thought I'd fill you in, anyway.

Steve:
QuoteHow much time does it take you to design and draw a card?
Depending on how long it takes for me to come up with an idea I like, it really doesn't take very long, maybe an afternoon or longer.

QuoteDo you sit down with the client for an hour and hash out ideas, draw roughs, etc...
The one I made for my friend, he pretty much left it up to me. I made a couple sketches and he picked which one he liked the best and I went with it, improving it and so on. The one I made for my mother, it was entirely by phone. I asked her for all the information she wanted on it and I asked her if she had anything in mind for the design. She threw in a couple things - like the dress form, measuring tape and old-style lettering. I came up with the idea of having stitching around the border and coloring it in sepia. She's coming over today to see it and we'll go from there.

QuoteHow much, in dollars, do you value your time?
Tough question since I had only thought of that briefly. I would rather not base a price on time, since, the client won't be there with me while I make it. It would be through telephone conversation or email. I suppose I could charge just a bit extra if I have to travel.

You're right about the minium, Steve. Having a minimum of 100 or 150 would be the better idea, and save the lower numbers, say a minimum of 10 cards, for reorders.

QuoteI don't know if you were planning to just use an ink-jet printer. I'm not sure if the ink is permanent enough. Your clients won't want your cards to smudge or transfer ink to the back of neighbouring business cards in a client's client's wallet.
I didn't think of that. The printer I'm using is an HP Deskjet Printer/Scanner/Copier. I just looked it up real quick and it looks as though there are options for different types of inks. I'll have to talk to my friend and see how those cards held up in his wallet.

QuoteSorry if this is a bit rambling... but hey, you'll never finish this project anyway :=
lol
SLoUCH!

Anian:
Quote...anyway, I wouldn't leave everything and do this if I was you...
No no no. This is just something to do on the side. I'm a stay at home dad right now and figured I could do this from home earning a few extra dollars so I don't feel like such a do-nothing dead-beat.
No, nobody's quitting their job and buying the little building on the corner and starting a small business in hopes of making it to the big top. It's nothing like that.
That's why I said at the start of my first post that I'm not even sure that it qualifies as a small business. I'm going to put a flyer up at the local store and see if I get any bites. I just didn't know how to price. But with that said, don't think that I wouldn't take it seriously.

QuoteMaybe find some machine to varnish, cut the edges or get parts embedded - that'll raise the price in a relatively easy way and adds to the overall impression.
I like that idea, Anian. I'll have to search for something like that.

I'm going to be starting a very small business, not even sure if it qualifies as a business, but I'm stumped at how I am supposed to price.

What I'm going to be doing is custom business cards. I want to offer business owners in my town (and abroad) another option when it comes to advertising on their cards. All I see in the paper (or at stores) are the same generic clip-arts (if there's any graphics at all), nothing really distiguishes them from each other. So I am offering custom hand-drawn designs.

Here are two examples of what I have already done:
Construction - For a friend of mine. This card design was featured in a magazine last year.
Tailoring - My mum's business.
(Both have a front and back)

I've called several different companies around the state asking what they charge. On average they will charge $50 for 500 cards (with color). Each company also varied with options. Some had the option for black and white or full color, others would go by how many colors you want, ie; 2 colors, 4 colors, etc... and the price goes up the more ink you use.
They all had a minimum of either 250 or 500 cards.

I'm just one person with a printer and Avery business card templates. I don't know how to go about figuring out how much to charge. At the moment I've got Ivory Matte cards that were like $6 (I think) for 150 cards. They are good quality cards, nice and sturdy. My mum found the good ones at Staples the other night and these are $14 for 200 (which is only about 6 or 7 dollars more for 50 more cards) with a semi-gloss finish.

Basing prices off the companies that I've contacted it would be around $10 for a hundred cards. I didn't get too personal with these companies, so I don't know if they would do a custom job and not use a computer for art, so I'm going to guess it would be more money to go that route if I were ordering 500 business cards with a custom design/setup.

I think that, since I'm not a big company, that I shouldn't force the customer to buy at least 250 cards, for around here, I think that would be a bit rediculous. I'm thinking of a more reasonable amount of a one sheet minimum, which is ten cards. I can certainly picture a customer calling up saying they need an extra 20 or so. I should probably have a maximum as well. 500 would probably be enough for around here.

Would $10 or $20 for a hundred cards sound correct (for either black and white or color)? Should I charge more since it is custom work? How do I base these prices?

Alright, hang on. If someone orders 500 business cards, I would have to buy three packages of cards at 200 cards a package. Each of these packages are $14. If I'm spending $42 and charging $10 for each hundred, I'd only be making $8... (what's the bus driver's name?)

This is why I need help ;)

Go wash you mouth young man! - Nothing beats Gremlins...except maybe Gremlins 2 (and of course the Killer Tomato franchise). :P

lol!

Speaking of Gremlins, my wife and I got Gremlins on DVD last year for Christmas from her aunt (along with Wii sweatpants and t-shirts for Bowling tourneys, heh) and she couldn't wait to see it. I myself hadn't seen that movie in years either, but aparently, neither of us remembered it being that... gruesome and /or horrible. I loved seeing it again, and I still like the movie, but my wife... heh, all she kept saying was, "Oh my God, that's, horrible!". Apparently all she remembered about the movie was cute little Gizmo ;)

I got a feeling from it that it didn't know what it wanted to be.

I haven't seen Gremlins 2 in years either...

\\--EDIT--\\
Anian, digging up that thread was a little below the belt and unecessary, no?

This is great, Chicky! Glad to see you are back with another update... after 3 years ;)

Sounds nice. I love the graphics too. For some reason, that hard drive reminds me of the computer disc in the intro to the NES game, Journey to Silius:

Looking forward!

Alrighty, I finally got passed the first one :P

Now I'm on the second one. I think the biggest problem I'm having is understanding exactly what it is I'm trying to figure out...
Spoiler
I'm guessing that I must type what IT is? Am I the only one who feels like the directions on what to do in this scene are unclear?
Eventhough it took me a ton of hints to solve, at least I knew what my direction was in the first scene, this one I just don't know what's going on. For example, do I even still have the piece of paper with the pencil? Or am I supposed to SAY the answer, or push a button or pull a lever... see what I mean? There's many ways of solving puzzles. I don't know what I have for options, or if they have even changed.
If nothing is different from the first scene, than I assume I will be writing answers on this piece of paper the whole game?

Leon, have you? By your last post I was thinking that you had it completed :)

Alright, this is driving me crazy. I'm still stuck. I guess I'm more blind than I thought. Everyone seems to be getting the first one after a couple hints, but I can't be arsed to figure it out for myself.

Thread title mentions version 1.1, but both links in first post lead to version 1.0 download.

Yes, I noticed that too.

Also, sometimes while holding shift to capitalize the first letter in the text box, it doesn't respond until the next letter is typed in.

Thanks Leon, so I guess I'm on the right track then. After posting ealier, I finally realized that;
Spoiler
No, it can't be like a cryptogram. I finally noticed that the numbers are written like in poetry (a septet is a seven line poem) which is what the paper's messege was in.

Am I on the right track?

I'm also unclear of how the answers should be written. Is it a one word answer or more than one word?
#735
lol, I fully agree with Bulbapuck.

Could I have another hint to the first puzzle?

Spoiler
The only thing I can think of is that the "riddle" given is like a cryptogram?

This game is very nice, I love the music in it and I love just having to solve riddles... eventhough I haven't solved any yet ;)

Very nice game, Dom. It's something I can "pick at" every now and again.

Pssh, this'll never get completed ::)

Looks good though! Great work!  :=

BUMP

Sorry for giving your thread lead shoes, Stupot. It's funny how often threads sink to the bottom after I post in them.

I thought this was quite the topic myself ;)
