Coloring it is simple, you just make a new layer in photoshop, ( Soft-color) and then draw with the paintbrush over the trees/roads/sky or whatever and voila, you have a colored image.

BTW, I did this in 5 minutes and rushed it a bit so it may seem a bit amateuristic, Ã, (I even forgot to color the clouds!) but this is just to show the possibilities with only a layer! I'm sure that if you take the time for it, the colors will be as beautifull as your drawings are.

Good work on the background!

Ok, Thanks for those instructions Trylle and [ ... ],  Im trying to make this background look like Trylle's now, altough I must say that it's not very easy to do so. (at least not for me ;))
#24
Ok, but how do I get the colors decreased to 16? We're talking about photoshop here right?
#25
Yes! :D

That's the style im looking for! Please tell me how to do this. I want all the details (Remember im a noob when it comes to paint programmes, so how do I scale it to an sci ega resolution?)

Whoa, That's a beautifull background, how on earth do you people do that?! (Did you use a tablet for this one? or was it all photoshop?)

The white dots, who you can see especially on the road and at the right tree, there on purpose or didn't you just fill it out?

Heh, I didnt do those on purpose, I did notice the white-ness in the trees but I left it there to work on later, I didnt see those white spots in the road at first though.

Quote
And the bush at the right looks strange, like mud and then some leaves sparkled over it, mabye it should like the branches, but it has not this effect.
The left bush then for example looks like he is built out of small boxes, but maybe that is caused through the picture compression, I can't judge. You should use "Irfan view" to convert into JPEG.

True true, the bushes look weird to say the least, (especially the left one) and I will work on that.

QuoteHope this gives you some hints how to improve the picture.Ã,  :)

Not to forget, this straight diagonal line you can see through the cut from the left bank to the water looks odd, not natural, especially compared to the other side of the bank.

Also very true, altough this is a minor problem I can easily fix. :)

Thanks for the pointers, I will try to work on it some more, any ideas on how I can improve that police car though? Because drawing those cars can be a bitch, (Oh how I long for the drawing skill to make a police car just like in PQ1 vga or PQ3)

Quote from: ReptileVery nice. But please dont use such bright colours. *my eyes!!*Ã,

I guess I could turn the brightness/contrast down a little bit. :D

I know it looks kinda weird, and believe me, If I could make it all-EGA, I would, but somehow I just cant get it right, no matter how many times I try.. (Is there a tutorial for this or something? I know there's a EGA room in AGS Studio Edtor Demo Quest II, but no tutorial there.)

Anyways, I've edited the picture into something better, but that damned ugly police car is bothering me like hell, anyone, tips?

Looks nice, but it would've looked even better if it was all AGI-styled. ;)

lol, Its true, some parts (the road, the bushes, the drowned man) are AGI styled and other parts (the tree's and the car) are more PQ2 styled, (except for the fact that my police car looks a bit amateuristic)

Quote from: ReptileIndeed you may have the neck for AGI art, even though some people think AGI is crap and is soo easy. I've mastered it in picedit and it was hard. Try to add a sky, and dont use to bright colours.

I've also downloaded this picedit programme, but damn, I had a hard time drawing with that stuff, sometimes it just doesnt draw lines and fill colors and stuff. But when it works it's rather handy for making AGI backgrounds though.

Btw. I love AGI games, it may have simple textures and easy to make, yet it still brings up many memories from the good'ol days. (How do you call the graphic style used in games like Leisure Suit Larry 2, Quest for Glory 1 and 2 and Police Quest 2 ? Is that also called SCI? Because I always thought games like Police Quest 3, LSL 5, QFG3 and 4 were SCI games)

Here I added a simple sky, a very simple one. But then you'll get a sea behind it. So my point is that your one is good, maybe you could make a bit land behind. If its supposed to be a small river that is.

Good point, when making a sky like this, it'll make it look like looking out over the ocean, but when I, for example add a another island to the picture, (on the top of this picture) it makes it look more like a river, which im aiming for, Ill try and edit my pic and see what happens, Ill post the result later, thanks for the pic and feedback guys.

Critics' Lounge / A background for my cop-game
Fri 01/04/2005 15:45:56
Hey all,

I've just finished my first background, and I'm quite happy with it as it is, however, I need advice on how to improve the water graphics and the police car, I've tried to get a Police Quest 2 style background, but it just doesnt feel quite like it yet, I know a lot of you here are pretty good at this so all help is welcome.

and the man in the water seems a bit too AGI style though, any ideas on how to make this into a more PQ2ish look? Are there any Photoshop tricks for this?

Awesome, it really looks a lot like the Colonel's Bequest background, I've also been aiming at making a background-style like this for my police adventure, but to no avail. so thumbs up to you.

I'd definetly get used to PSP if you have it, or The Gimp, anything with layers, it will help A LOT

I've got PSP, I will try doing characters with that programme, altough I may need to learn my way around photoshop a little, (I know how to apply layers though)

Quote from: ProgZmaxYou mentioned that you were aiming for an sci style character...

maybe going a bit smaller scale would be a good idea?Ã,  I hope this helps.Ã,

Hey thanks, that's a nice looking animation/character, I like the way he positions himself when firing the gun, its like mine animation but way smoother, and unlike mine your character actually has an expression in his face! cool, thanks for the help.
#33
That's a cool animation MrColossal, It may not be very cop-like, but I could use it for the person firing at the cop himself.

And I only used Jasc Animation Shop to compile the pics together, I did those 11 pics with paint and then threw em into the Animation ship, hence the amateuristic result.
#34
Thanks, Its because I made the officer kneel when he was reaching his gun, and I had to make his arms stretch when firing the gun, therefore I had to re-position his body a little, this  made the image bigger which I didnt see at the moment. yet, I do know how to prevent this from happening in the future I think,

Hello people

I decided to try and make a adventure game based on the Police Quest series, but I'm having trouble with making a decent character, I was actually aiming for a SCI style character like in Police Quest 3, but a Police Quest 2 would do nicely too, however, I happen to totally suck at this, All day long today I've tried to make a police officer character, but every try just didnt come out right. in fact, here's a picture of what my best looking example was..(And that really says something about my lack of skills)

http://img13.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img13&image=copstand10.png

I've also tried to make an animation of a police officer telling a suspect to drop his gun while keeping his hand on the holster and eventually drawing his gun and firing it, and even though I like this animation, you can obviously tell its lacking on the art skill.

I'm talking about this one..
Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,

EDIT: I resized the images so they all had the same size, but this results in a rather weird effect as you can see, (the officer getting fatter)

Anyways,Ã,  I could really use some advice from you folks, since I'm at a dead trail when it comes to character editing.

I also tried looking at the website listed in the tutorial section about how to make good backgrounds and sprites and such, but this site seems to be down at the moment? --> http://user.tninet.se/~vqb114l/ilb/tutorials.htm

Thanks in advance! Let the critisism commence!Ã,  :D

Basically either any Kings Quest or Police Quest games.Ã,  Although most importantly Police Quest which are by far my favorite, and if I have to pick one it would probably be Police Quest 3 for the overall game and Police Quest 2 for the storyline.Ã,  I long for the day when somebody will remake or create an unnofficial sequel to the police quest series, since KQ and also Space Quest get all the attention, I feel police quest deserves some too! Anybody agree?

Hell yes, I so desperately long for a remake of any of the police quest games, especially the 2nd one, bit offtopic but does anyone know if there's already some plans to do a remake of the police quest series?

ONTOPIC..

I'd have to say that the best adventure game i've ever played was Quest for Glory 1, I mean, the non-linearity of it all was absolutely awesome, Quest for Glory 4 comes very close to 1 though. (I hated GFQ 3 though)

And of course the Police Quest series from 1 to 3, PQ 4 and SWAT sucked though.

Aha, I thought it had something to do with importing special graphics or backgrounds in game, forgive my stupidity. :D
#38
Yea you're right but you mentioned scanning? I dont even got a scanner. :-[ but if there are really simple things which needs to be done, I guess i could help?

Anyways, will check the link out after the 9th. ;)

I just went on their site, and it says that a demo will be released in the next few weeks!!!! :D

no screenshots though.

Dang, that looks and sounds like a top notch game! I'll bet it takes a long time before its released though, since its only 28% completed. ;)
