General Discussion / Some special day today?
Sun 19/07/2009 05:16:15
Ok maybe I was absent for a long time but this forum seems REALLY quiet right now... Is there any special day at the moment? People went on holiday or something?
I find it disturbing and hope that everything will get back to normal :) I remember when I used to refresh the page and almost always see a new post :P

Critics' Lounge / Igor character C&C
Sun 19/07/2009 03:55:12
Okay, while waiting for C&C on Dr. Zipper i also pixelized his retarded helper - Igor :) (Well Zipper calls him that but that's not his real name)

Again quite happy with character overall but no good shading :/ help?

Adventure games aren't coming back only in Germany Ghost :) I can see the same thing happening in Poland. Also look at the Monkey Island remake released not so long ago. And the new Monkey Island by Telltale.
My opinion is that people slowly get bored with "sandbox" type games. Furthermore graphics are becoming less important. Can you remember the days of Tomb Rider when everyone was excited MOSTLY about graphics? With each year we waited for visuals to get better and better. Now everyone is used to "good looking" games and it doesn't impress as much as it used to. People tend to give more attention to gameplay again. And that's a good thing :)

When it comes to making adventure games, they indeed need lots of people working on them, lot's of animations and voice acting and it all means a big amount of money. Nowadays when piracy over torrents takes away over 80% of game development companies income expensive projects are very risky. Only big companies can allow themselves to invest in an expensive project. However even those companies don't want to invest in something which isnt popular nowadays. They tend to pick the newest trends in gaming like parkour and jumping from building to building because they know they will make profit out of it. And who would buy adventure games? They're not "hot" right now. But I think they will return soon because players look more and more into gameplay and story...

IMHO lightsources arent a problem, they look nice and give a nice sci-fi feel to the backgrounds (esspecially the pink one).

You have your own style which is easy to recognize so it's hard for me to tell if something looks out of place (to be honest they look great to me :P)

I think the only thing I dont like is that crack on the ground in the first background...It goes at a wierd angle kind of disturbing the perspective (it doesn't go right with the ground depth perspective)

Critics' Lounge / Dr. Zipper character C&C

Ok,
I haven't been around for a long time but I hope it's going to change soon and I will be able to visit ags forums daily :). Since I haven't worked on any pixel art for loong loong months I kind of got off the track.

I decided to practice and I came up with this guy - Dr. Zipper (I sketched out this character some time ago and even made a lowpoly 3d model of him but I decided to make a pixelish version now :) )

To be honest I'm quite happy with how he turned out. I even managed to restrict myself to only 10 colors (poor shading though ;/). Makes me think about making game about him in 2d pixelish style instead of 3d as I initialy intended.

I'm open to any kind of C&C (even "you suck - drop dead" type :P) esspecially some help with how to un-flatten this guy with better shading :)

Here he is:

Heheh thanks :) things finally start to get better for me. I think I'll be fully back soon :)

It's your wife fighting with your neighbour!!! What were they doing in the closet anyway?

Blah...Wanted to shade it too but kind of got tired :)
#129
I love that guy! He's so...so...um..can't find the word.. Well he's hard to forget :). Kind of reminds me of that 3d movie with the grumpy old man with flying house...
#130
And don't give up :) your background looks already 10 times better than in the beginning :)
#131
And still...Those book colors give me heart attack whenever I look at them, try to use less saturated colors on them and put some books of same colors toghether (like series or collections). Right now it's high-contrast mish-mash

Amnesiac rulez!!! kicks ass man! woo! make a game about him!! he's freakin great!

I think it's really good! But remember, he will have to stop when he recoils and move when he stretches, I don't know if you can do it with AGS, I think it will keep moving :(

With some scriptinhg everything is possible :)

It's my first ever piece of pixel art, and I'm very happy of how it turned out.
Jimmy Paradox - Wannabe Paranormal Investigator (Couldn't fit it all in the image).

He even looks like Dib from Invader Zim :)

Kastchey rocks my world today :) I vote for him

Son of the nurse, very odd freak who dresses up as a bunny (mostly because he hates his own outlook - he has problems with skin, teeth and he tends to be ill most of the time).
Mostly harmless but when you try to make fun of him better watch out! He can go into nerdish-rage!
He carries his camp uniform with him so nobody can scream at him that he doesnt have it :)

His mother tends to be overprotective and seems to ignore that he's dressing up as an animal :)

She's an ex- bad girl. You can tell by the butterfly tattoo on her calf.
Butterfly tattoo = bad girl? I would say it's quite the opposite but ok :)

I totally think there should be some huge AGS team collaboration to make a Willy Beamish-esque Camp Copycat adventure game. It'd be awesome.

Mmmmmm...Yeah that sounds nice

I see lots of banding here and there and the skin tones seem not contrasted enough

Is there a full mp3 for tune number 1? I love how it sounds and would like to hear the full song :)
