SketchUp http://www.sketchup.com

Easy to use 3D tool. Great for exteriors. If you have problems with perspective or shadowing, this is great tool for you.

Good: fully functional 8 working hours trial
Bad: it cost 500$

I made this in 20 minutes in Sketchup. Nothing spectacular but with few touches in Photoshop it can be great. I wont work with it so if anybody wants this picture, go ahead.

Anyway, this Sketchup is great tool for anybody who just can't get right perspective and shadows in their drawings (me included).

man, anti-aliasing is evil!
i only learned how to turn it off after the game was finished!  >:(

To have complete topic we should post solution for this problem.
In photoshop 4 there is option to turn off antialiasing for line tool.
In Photoshop 8 this option is missing. But, you can draw a line with pen tool: while holding <shift> key click on two places and they will be connected with no antialiased line.

Critics' Lounge / Antialiasing problem

Hi people,

i have problem with character drawings. I wanted to use some antialiasing on borders, but antialiasing looks good only if you know foreground and background color. So, if foreground is black and background is white, you put some grey on borders and this looks good.
But what about character sprites? He can move on various backgrounds so if something looks good on white background, on green one will have some ugly white dots. So i'm stuck now.

Can somebody enlighten me about this?

Fallout 2, anyone? ^_^
But I still like that idea better...

Oh, that's way this sounds familiar ;)
But i will change brown color to green and that's whole new story.
I'm kiding... I got my idea from two SF books, not from Fallout. Any similiarity is purely coincidental.

I'll try to describe this stories better

Story about history is set in medieval age. It's inspired by the book "Name of The Rose" by Umberto Eco. I wrote about this idea some time ago. Meanwhile i've learned to draw good enough to make atmosphere right.
Main character is called to help solve murders in monastery. But soon he discovers that monastery is hiding dark secrets...
It's not exact copy of Eco's novel. I will take some characters (personalities to be precise) and general atmosphere to my game, anything else is my own scenario.

SF story is set on Earth after genetic wars where land is devastated and remaining people living in isolated tribes. Main character is member of one such tribe... After people in his willage start dying, he will try to find a cure. As he travels, he will find that Earth was different before...

So, that's general idea. I hope you like it.

Hi,
i have some ideas for game but i can't decide wich one to realize first (if any...). One story is placed in medieval age and other is SF in near future. What's your preference? Which setting is more interesting to you?
(Answers like "Whatever you want as long you made it good" are not helpfull)

Great one. If you keep that level for whole game i'll be glad to play it.
Everythig on picture looks good, well, except that wings on plane. Altough they should be broken, perspective is somewhat wrong.

Thank you.
I like last drawing, i had problems with nose-eye shading, so that's OK now.
Now i need to draw main character who should look smart and, hm, ...cute. You don't want to push some ugly guy around the screen for long.
Any ideas what should be main characteristic of such guy? I tried but i only get character for asasin or thief.

Hi, this is my first attempt to draw character. It should be some old abby (i hope that's obvius). Please, criticise.

I've made this background in one hour. Is this good enough to base my game on this or i need to learn more.

I thought about releasing a demo wich will have graphics i plan to use in game with just one puzzle.
After i get some comments and critics about my style in general, i'll continue to work.

GarageGothic gave me some thoughts.
Since i don't have much experience with story writing, i thought that if i make a game based on finished story, i'll be safe from making beginners mistakes. But this will ruin much of the fun for those who already read a book.

So i decided to bring atmosphere and main characters into game and write completly new mistery. Also, i'll push timeline more towards  the rennesaince: i'm more familiar with that age.

Thanks for support

So i shuld start working.
My plan is to stick to the book for start and then as story develops, start adding my own puzzles, characters, locations.

Gabriel Knight 3 is my favorite.

Hi,
i'm reading  Umberto Eco's "Il nome della rosa" (The Name of the Rose)
It's a book about mysterius murders in medieval abbey. It's setting and story realy look like material for an advanture game:

- medieval abbey should give interesting locations (church, crypt, graveyard, library, secret doors...)

- NPC-s: many priests with own history and diferent views of the world

- main story: find the murderer and his reason, discover some other secrets of abbey

What do you think?
