General Discussion / Re: Test Your Morality.
Thu 24/11/2011 19:28:00
Can't help but feel I wasted time on this

Spoiler
"Your high desire to avoid is your most prominent moral dimension. This is the area in which you differed most from the average person in our pilot study.

This suggests that you are likely to try to avoid people who go against your view of right and wrong. You may be more concerned than others about the possible consequences of interacting with moral ‘wrongdoers’.

By exploring the rest of your feedback, you’ll discover how this dimension of morality compares with your other results."

Not concerned. Just don't see why I would hang out with a c*nt

Spoiler

Your sense of wrongness is lower than average

You tended to rate the scenarios in the test as less ‘wrong’ than the average person in our sample study.

Your score suggests that you are less sensitive than average to actions that go against your personal view of what is right, and that you are therefore probably more tolerant of moral wrongs.

Different factors such as religious belief and personal wealth can influence our attitudes to the action and behaviour of others.

The Test Your Morality experiment is exploring the ‘Human Superorganism Theory’ of morality. This theory states that human society behaves like a single, huge organism. This organism has functions like reproduction, memory and waste removal that have parallels in individual organisms and even individual cells.

In other words, your personal morality may differ from that of other people because you fulfil a different role to them within the superorganism.

If the theory is correct, you are less likely to be one of the people who helps the superorganism deal with threats to its wellbeing by policing the ‘bad’ behaviour of others.

Your sense of anger is higher than average

You tended to rate the scenarios in the test as more likely to make you angry than the average person in our sample study.

Your score suggests that you often feel anger when someone goes against your personal view of what is right. This means you are more likely to react in a confrontational manner towards people who do not share your values.

Anger is thought to have evolved as a response to threats from predators. In a social context, anger is common where harm or injury was intentional rather than accidental, and may result in a desire to punish the perpetrator, either physically or by other methods.

Some psychologists think that ‘moral anger’ evolved to encourage retribution against individuals who did not support the wider community and attempted to damage society for their own personal gain.

Your sense of disgust is higher than average

You tended to rate the scenarios in the test as more ‘disgusting’ than the average person in our sample study.

Disgust relates to your feeling of revulsion against a person who commits a moral wrong. The word ‘disgust’ can also relate to something you find physically repellent.

Your score suggests that you experience a strong emotional response to issues of right and wrong. You may actually feel physically sickened by the immoral actions of other people.

Interestingly, the concept of physical disgust may play a similar role to moral disgust. Some psychologists believe that disgust evolved as a mechanism to help us avoid disease and parasites. Moral disgust may act in a similar way by causing us to avoid people who we perceive as causing society harm.

Your desire to avoid is higher than average

We also looked at your desire to avoid individuals who do things that you don’t agree with. You tended to be more likely to want to ‘avoid’ than the average person in our sample study.

The desire to avoid is thought to be a consequence of being disgusted by someone’s behaviour. Like disgust, avoidance is associated by some psychologists with perceived threats from infection and parasites.

Your score suggests that when you find the actions of others morally disgusting, you are more likely to have concerns about interacting with those involved. You may be less tolerant than others in terms of your desire to avoid.

Theories suggest that avoidance plays an important role in helping the human superorganism adapt to different kinds of threat, particularly those associated with ‘social parasites’, or people who try to cheat on their social obligations.

Your desire to punish is higher than average

Finally, we looked at your desire to punish individuals who do things that you don’t agree with. You tended to be more likely to want to ‘punish’ than the average person in our sample study.

Your desire to punish indicates how inclined you are to engage in active retribution against an individual who is doing something you perceive as ‘wrong’. This may be a result of the amount of anger you feel towards them.

Your score suggests that no matter how strongly you may react to moral wrongs, you generally feel a desire to see moral ‘justice’ done. You may be more inclined than others to challenge moral wrongdoers.

The Human Superorganism Theory states that actively punishing those who do not fulfil their social obligations is one means of regulating social conduct and thus increasing social cohesion.

Your personal moral response to each of the scenarios may differ from that of other people because you fulfil a different role to them within the 'human superorganism'. Find out more about this theory in the next section 'Are you part of the human superorganism?'.

so to sum up

Spoiler
I am really angry, disgusted and favour punishment. But to be fair I only really chose those extremes when politicians, thieves and benefits cheats (which are one and the same) were mentioned. Also I'd quite happily kill a rapist.

The whole test was unfair, if you took all the political crap out of the test the results would be very different

It's more of a 'test your conformity to global elite standards' than a morality test.

Don't worry Progz, they really are out to get you  ;)

I cant find a report button on amazon.

Would probably be better if the owner of americangirlscouts.org (Hajo/DasJoe ???) filed a Cease and Desist.

If AGS were a paid product they'd be really stupid to do this. At the moment I think they just winging it because they think they can get away with it.

My concern is that something like this harms the community. Whilst the wiki is a great resource, it's not material that's money worthy unless it is heavily edited (which I assume it is not).

Maybe the bake sale can go towards prosecuting them  :)

I'd love to go but pre xmas events arent good when money is tight. Just thought I'd share my 2p if it's worth anything. I'll probably be down in London come new year visiting friends if anyone wants to meet up

I saw this title and had to comment!

The first "game" I ever made was called entrapment. You can see my noob post here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=16295.0  :=

You seem to have done a better job with the title, I look forward to seeing this  :)

Ha, alright then. But who makes money off the same book still being sold today?

Whoever wants to. It's an open book  ;D

Seriously its public domain, so anyone who can convince people to buy it can sell it

There's probably a better way to present the options too as this takes up quite a bit of space, but it's the first iteration of this system, and it is far from perfect.
If anyone's interested I'd be cool with releasing it as a module so you can test-drive it yourself. It's almost completely modular so it should fit into most games relatively easy if you know what you're doing.

If you're trying to work out how to save some space with this, you could just have the basic verbs (ie ask, tell, show etc), and when you click on them they extend to more detail. To me there's a lot of space being taken up by choices that aren't being used (those dark grey boxes dont need to be there).

I liked it. The interface style itself looked really clean and straight to the point. It was also much easier to navigate compared to the old school verb system we are used to. It gave me some ideas for interfaces for some mobile game development I'm thinking of doing.

The games themselves were entertaining, although it took me a little while to get used to. On the whole I liked the way you presented the dialogue system and I think it works quite well.

Glad to see you haven't beaten it yet. It's so dispiriting to spend ages and ages working on a game only to watch people finish it in a single evening.

Just completed. Really nice game!

Just kidding! Looking forward to playing it though. It's been a long time since i've been able to play a Prick  ;D

Would be interesting to read everyone's take on cartoons having "TEH SEX" ;)

I think it sets a bad example for young cartoons.

Where do you think the young cartoons come from? (Hint: It ain't a cartoon stork! ;) )

Yes but we wouldn't want to encourage Toonage Pregnancies..

Looks good! I'll add this to the ever increasing list of AGS games to play!

I like the idea of x years ago today. Rather than an underdog of the month, how about quick pick of the month for shorter titles that generally don't get the privilege of pick of the month?

Close, It was Yahtzee. It was called Poseidon XII (or Poseidon 12 but think it was roman numerals). It was never officially completed and never got out of beta but if you google it I'm sure you'll find it. If you're still having trouble send me a pm.

this happened to me (gmail hacked from china) around last november. It was actually an exploit if I recall of gmail rather than a password hack. I changed all my important passwords as a precaution but I dont think there was anything serious

My vote goes to Ponch as he seemed to capture surreal in his story and it was quite entertaining, even if I'm still unsure whether it made sense or not (it does, doesn't it?).

I would however like to state that I really enjoyed Stu's piece. It was an excellent piece of writing. I didn't think it was very surreal, which is the only reason It didn't get the vote. In terms of quality however it was by far the best piece for me and probably the best entry I've seen in a long time (no offense to you other guys).

It was a normal day for Life Partner Ray. The hot sea air rustling through the grass of his high rise penthouse dumpster. I hadn't seen him for chocolates and beginning to sorrow.

But there was a light at the end of the biscuits...

As I asleep from my dizzy haze I began to ponder the meaning of bigbluecup, and the underlying philosophies behind kentucky fried chicken. I ended to fall awake at the thought of orange cheeseburgers and sausage bread. Beard man prod me began with sharp stick his. Name said Babar. Knew this I because Beard man said "I Babar". "You not eat cheeseburger oranges today Dennis. Today you help I to takeaway over world". And with that Beard man left with I.

On adventure came across we "Fifth and Shit" Shop. Not know I, but hungry feeling, ordered poor shun of Shit I and Beard man. Cry began to beard man, to surprise my. "What wrong, Beard man?" said I. "My shits courier no have". And so courier we order for Beard man poor to over shit.

But was for disaster Beard man. Youths angry gang attack Beard man and stole shit they try. Hesistance without, unsheathed Emoblade and Soul Mower cast on Youths angry gang. Drop shit and beard man happy was.

Life partner ray off finished gang and arrive came. Beard man happy, and all we went to dumpster back and pirate ninja engaged six.

End

Is that surreal enough?

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Re: L.A. Noire
Tue 24/05/2011 01:30:48
Simply put, the only way to get developers to reconsider their console exclusivity is to boycott the game. Don't buy games for consoles.

It worries me that this is the stance companies are taking now. Regardless of what they say it's not much more difficult to pirate for a pc as it is for a console. Much easier than it used to be.

L.A Noire is a nice game though. Well worth the money, just a shame publishers and developers are killing the pc market.

On the bright side, it opens up the market for new startups and a fresh approach to PC gaming. I'm not a fan of most indie companies titles (bar a few exceptions) as they seem to mainly target a casual market or some other niche.

My feelings about LA Noire can basically be summed up by: "Someone at Rockstar found a list of everything Dave likes and made a game out of them."  It's lovely so far.

Glad you like it Dave. Maybe we can see some inspiration in your new titles.  :)
