I would consider Holland if it gets decided, I get my passport sorted and I have funds next year. Holland can be quite cheap for us Brits to travel too. Thats if anyone would be interested in having me there. As long as I'm allowed one afternoon to try those special cakes they make.

Although I wouldn't consider my vote a serious contribution, since I've never been to Mittens or Brittens before, and am hardly a reliable person.

Plus, there are a few states that only really still have pull in international politics because they have nukes.

By states I'm assuming you mean countries. In that case let me correct you.

When using brackets (like this), do you put the full stop outside or inside at the end of a sentence. (Like this.) or (Like this).

I've never known how to do it properly because some people do it differently. :) Thanks.

A full stop is always outside the brackets, as it ends the sentence not the brackets.

@Oliwerko: Correct.

@Progz: In english, we only have Davis' car, not Davis's car. I don't know whether it's a different rule in american. However I suppose you could have Davis's an idiot, although that's one I'm not sure on.

What are the correct rules for speech?

''So,'' I said, ''Is the correct way to write speech?''

Where does the punctuation and all the capital letters go? And how does speech within speech work?

"So I was reading this this thread on English and phemar said, ""So," I said, "Is this the correct way to write speech?""

I think that's right. Think of it like nested loops. And If you weren't be serious, stop trying to be a smartarse  :P

Well since you are back how about Cirque de zale 2?  :P

We needed to use it for software design (a java module). A basic class diagram in uml is fairly straight forward, particularly since you can use a plugin in netbeans to reverse engineer the code into uml. Which is normally what we needed to do for 20%, 20% being why its good (ie high cohesion loose coupling blah blah), and 60% just for getting to code to work, well formatted and no errors.

One day for the critical appraisal, he asked for a factory design pattern instead of the usual class diagram. To this day I do not know what the fuck it is (I avoided the exam question on it), and so I assume I lost 20marks. However for some strange reason i got 78 on that project, which theoretically is impossible (Theoretically had I understood the FDP i'd've gotten 98, which we all know doesn't exist in university level marking - the highest I've seen is my mates 94, for some annoying flash module I did).

My point being that with my 78 being an impossible mark without answering the question, I somehow got marks for not bothering with uml, which further enhances the point that it is useless.  :D

Just out of curiosity, how popular is UML (ie does it get used or does everyone think its a waste of time).

It's utterly useless unless you're developing a colossal-sized piece of software with a team of dozens. I was forced to learn it, never understood it at all, and never needed it, ever. :)

Just as I thought.

Cheers

Sigh.

Alas, there's no denying it any longer. Convergence will not hit the June 30th release date as planned. I've delayed the release until July 20th. Many apologies to everyone who wanted to play it next week, but we need more time.  All I can say is that the extra weeks will be worth it.

:(
Suppose it give me some time to sort my finances out better I suppose.

If you want to make it up to me I'd love to see another cartoon short  ;)

Good luck Dave

Last year I bunked a day off work to go to Bath (a rather nice town in England), had a few beers, took the train back and we had an idea to get a bottle of bourbon. I don't remember getting home, I woke up the next day with cuts all over my face and hands, and had a brilliant excuse as to why I was absent when I returned to work 2 days later.

As a great yellow man once said: "Alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all of lifes problems"  :)

At the start of the university year, as a dare, I peed into a pint glass. Then I was dared to get someone to drink it.

I passed off the watered down, second hand stella artois as carling that had been left on the radiator. 2 freshers drunk it.

I wasn't really drunk, think I'd had about 3 or 4. I think thats what worries.

In terms of C#/XNA, apparently its not taken seriously by Game Dev companies, probably due to its infancy and restricted use (portability concerns etc). No big companies really use XNA, whilst C++ is considered standard.
I have a few friends graduating from a games tech course struggling to find work with XNA, luckily they got a c++ (module) whacked on at the last minute (i'd switched course by then), but the industry is damn near impossible to break into.

I haven't worked specifically in the game industry but have been working as a contract engineer/software designer for the past 20 years.

Just out of curiosity, how popular is UML (ie does it get used or does everyone think its a waste of time). Just wondering as we were told it is essential to learn by our lecturers, whilst I've met people who develop for companies who say its useless and they don't bother with it.

Personally, I think its a waste of time that could be spent develop an actual piece of software, but then I've never worked on something large scale, where i can see how it might be useful.

My Secret
I started this life-style on my 30th birthday after seeing my fat-ass 250lbs (~114 kilos) in a mirror.  After less than a year of this life-style I had dropped 50lbs and maintain a very healthy 200lb (~91 kilos) weight which I am still maintaining today.  I am a big guy (6'4 or 1.83m) if anybody was wondering :)

Thats not a bad weight. Im about 13.5stone (aka 189lbs for people that don't like our normal system  :P) but im only about 5'8.

And I thought all americans were fat  ;D

6'4 isn't average, but I guess its average for a tall guy. Everyone whose tall seems to be 6'4.

My Secret

The seafood diet

See food and eat it  ;)

Although I avoid McD's and other similar stuff most of the time. I reckon the real reason its called fast food is because it makes you full to the point were you feel sick for about an hour or two... then your starving again. Most of it tastes vile too (although there's something about the burgers I like).

If I have the time, the funds and the travel I'll be there.

I won't reserve because I don't want to affect the estimated numbers if I can't make it (london is a long way from bristol where I am now, and even longer from liverpool where I may end up returning to if I don't find a job).

Whereabouts is it? I have a mate going to Goldsmiths University in september which is in New Cross, so I might be able to mix it in with plans to meet him and get him over too (He's doing a games tech course, like I was).

Also once this is set in stone, If im still nearby I'll get in contact with my university, as this seems relevant to a Games Tech course (students like to nag important people about jobs).

General Discussion / Re: The BNP
Mon 15/06/2009 02:56:58
Why dont we just trade all the scroungers for the immigrants? Anyone caught benefit cheating gets shipped off to a country in place for someone whose coming in.

imho if it weren't for the the religous extremists blowing our country to pieces we wouldn't have political extremists like the BNP (or at least they wouldn't get the widespread attention they are at the moment). But ffs, lets not get on a topic about religion.

Besides Im considering following suit and immigrating elsewhere (once I have money and a job). As I stated earlier I'd love to see the states, and it makes you wonder how you'd feel if you travelled elsewhere and got the response we give these immigrants (even if you do hate them).
