Ok, I've been using Audacity for my sound mixing and recording for a long time and I've been happy with it... until now. Somehow, it was adjusted so that while recording a new track, it won't play the other tracks, however I need that function on so that I can hear the rhythm and play in time with everything else... I tried changing it back to the default 'play other tracks while recording' function, but when I try to apply it, my computer shuts down. This thing is acting really screwy... Can anyone either give me a possible solution to my problem, or offer an alternate program with basically the same functions?

Thank you!

General Discussion / Fake game on eBay....
Sat 22/09/2007 03:23:10
Well, I'm pretty ticked off right now- here's the situation: About 8 weeks ago I put a bid on a gameboy advance game (Final Fantasy V Advance). I won the item, sent the seller his money, two weeks later he says he hasn't received the money yet. 3 weeks ago, he finally contacts me, saying he got the money and he'll send the game. I got the game today, I play it, and decide to do something else. I saved my game. Then about 30 minutes later when I go back to play it, the saved data isn't there. So, naturally, I thought I'd consult the World Wide Web for answers. It turns out that this happens to people a lot, and my game was possibly pirated. So I search for a description of pirated games. My game matches those descriptions: wrong serial numbers, no Nintendo Seal of Approval on the front, the cartridge has something weird inside of it... etc.

So I reported the guy on eBay, and I messaged him, asking for a refund. Now my question is: have any of you had experience with bootleg GBA games? I may actually keep this game, because I don't want to bother buying another copy, but the save-game function is a bit wonky- at one point it only allows me to quick-save. I restart the cartridge, the game lets me do a regular save, as well as a quick-save. So I save my game (just to test), restart, and it won't let me load my game. Screwy, isn't it? Any advice?

General Discussion / Cover songs thread
Mon 04/06/2007 02:44:30
Howdy! I've recently been listening to The Police, and I have a lot of their songs stuck in their head. My band and I just finished a cover of one of their tunes and I thought I'd post it (and any other covers we do, in the future). This thread can also be used to talk about cover songs in general...

Roxanne

Don't worry, the sound quality on this cut is much better than the quality than in that other song I posted. We still have a lot to work on in this song (mainly the chorus is sucky, and the drumming is a bit off, plus there is absolutely no mixing or mastering that had been done on this version). This song is really unfinished, but I thought I'd share it anyways.

So... enjoy, and tell me what you think!

And please try not to be too negative *gaggh-Helm-gagghcoughblechhh*

General Discussion / MP3 Quality?
Sat 05/05/2007 02:09:53
I've recently formed a band, and we've made a few recordings. However, the device I'm using to record the band only has very low quality .wav format recordings. I've tried using my PC's Sound Recorder to make the sound quality better, but that doesn't get it to the so-called 'CD Quality'. I'm wondering- are there any ways to make sound quality on the songs sound even remotely good as a CD? I use the program Audacity for mixing- would anyone know some tricks with that to make the sound better?

If you wish, I can post sound clips of the songs...

Thanks,

Steel

General Discussion / Spider-Man 3
Thu 03/05/2007 04:28:15
Well, I think we've had a lot of religious threads lately, and so why don't we take a secular break from all that and sit down to talk about Spider-Man 3. I thought I'd start this thread because we usually have threads for all these big, blockbuster hits (Like Pirates 3, and Star Wars Episode III, etc).

So... pretty much the same stuff as in the other movie threads- speculation about the movie, comments on the other movies in the series, that kind of stuff. Please try to stay out of the religious talk altogether (unless it's used to prove a point in some way).

A new book which J.R.R. Tolkien had been writing since 1918, before his death is going to be published next month. The book was picked up by his son Christopher, and was 30 years in the making.

General Discussion / AGS Skypecast
Mon 12/03/2007 22:24:13
I assume this probably has been discussed before, so please mods, don't hesitate to delete this if it has; anyways, I downloaded Skype a few days ago, and I think it's a great program. Very convenient. So I thought, why not start an AGS Skypecast- there could be people running at at various times during the day, and AGSers could drop in and stuff. Almost like IRC. Any thoughts on this? Anyone have any more ideas for things like this?

Kingdom Games presents:

The Book [/i] (working title)

Storyline:

We find our main character in his old age; feeble, weak, useless. But he still has a tale or two to tell of his glory days, and he intends to chronicle all of his life. This is the first part of his tale. Our intrepid hero-to-be finds himself dangling from a cliff's edge, with his whole life below him. His grip loosens, and he feels himself slipping. He falls prey to gravity, and he feels the full force of it. The fall seems like an eternity to him. Where does he end up? That's for me to know, and for you to find out.

PROGRESS:

Story: 10%
Sprites: 1%
Backgrounds: 4%
GUI: 0%
Scripting: 0%
Music: 0%

I know that it's a bit early to be posting about this, but I feel like this game is going to turn out a lot better than my previous game.

Features:

  • Two separate soundtracks- MIDI and MP3, all with unique songs for each score!

  • Very low resolution character art!

  • An epic game with over 30 backgrounds and a full-length musical score!

  • AND much, much more!

Screenshots (these backgrounds are still WIP):

I am DESPERATELY in need of a scripter (or scripters), and for someone to do the GUI. A MIDI musician might help too, as I am better with MP3 than MIDI. I'll post more info on the game when I have more ready.
UPDATE:
March 12/2007
A new team member has signed on. Maverick is going to do scripting and GUI. I am also planning on either updating the graphics for the final release, or else releasing a deluxe version of the game (for free, of course). I am in need of background artists, as my backgrounds don't quite fit what I have in mind for the game. If anyone wants to do backgrounds, PM me, and I'll send you a copy of the game storyline with a list of locations/etc. I have also shortened how many areas will be in the game from around 30 backgrounds to about 20-25 backgrounds.

Hey, I downloaded The Neverhood Cd-Rip version off of The Underdogs, and I've been having trouble running it. I downloaded the patch, the game fix, and everything it said you need (it even said to download Application Compatibility Toolkit if you have trouble running on Windows 2000, I tried that, and it still won't work).  :P  The game crashes before it even starts. Once I saw a faint outline of the Neverhood title, but it crashed instantly after that. Anybody? I know some of you might think Abandonware is illegal, but if the Underdogs has it, then it's probably not illegal.

General Discussion / Super Bowl XLI

Hey AGSers, I'm writing this as the Superbowl's on. Who are you guys rooting for? I want Chicago to win.

Okay, I know we have the 'Best Rock Song EVER!' thread already, but I decided to start this one. Let's see if we can get as many posts as that one did (okay, I doubt it, but oh well). List what you think the best non-rock/pop songs are (soft rock is okay I guess). My favourites are:

Jazz:

Glenn Miller- In The Mood. Classic jazz piece by one of the greatest, yet underrated musicians ever. I especially love the opening horn riff.
Anything by Thelonious Monk. Another highly underrated musician. One of the greatest pianists ever, IMO.
Herbie Hancock- Chameleon. This song starts out with a simple bass riff but takes it to a whole other level.
The entire album Bitches Brew by Miles Davis.

Reggae:

Bob Marley- Pimper's Paradise. A good song with powerful lyrics.
Bob Marley- Is This Love. One of Bob's best songs. Very Jamaican sounding.
Bob Marley- Jammin'. Another Marley classic. The jazzy vibes are schweet!
Bob Marley- Could You Be Loved. Need I say more?
Steel Pulse- Rollerskates. A very cool song by a highly unknown British reggae band.
Steel Pulse- Bodyguard. This song is pure KEWL. Check it out if you have a P2P network.

Hip Hop

Not a big fan, but I listen to a bit. Mostly just K-Os.

K-Os- Heaven Only Knows Remix
K-Os- Superstarr Part Zero
K-Os- Superstarr Part 1

Alternative (ish)

Okay, I know Tears For Fears aren't technically considered rock, I personally don't find them hard enough to be considered 'true rock'. They are very experimental and dabble into all styles.

Tears For Fears- The Working Hour.
Tears For Fears- Everybody Wants To Rule The World.
Tears For Fears- Sowing The Seeds Of Love.

Hey people, I was asked by the new AGS user Big Nerd to do music for his game. It's the same game with that awesome Miami Vice-style Cop sprite he did. I thought I'd go for a  funk style of music for the game and I was wondering what you guys thought of this piece I did. It's largely unfinished, I know, but I'll probably do a better version later today. This was made using a keyboard and Audacity. Here it is (sorry in advance for the crappy server):

Actually, despite not getting any crits on it, I've started working on an improved version, which I'll post tomorrow.

General Discussion / CD Burning Troubles
Mon 22/01/2007 15:37:06
Hey guys, I've been having MAJOR problems with my CD-R/RW drive. I was trying to burn some music onto a disc, but any program I use says there is no disc in the drive. However, when I try to burn video files onto a CD, the process goes fine. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the drive itself, the computer, the program, or even the discs themselves. I need help!

Thanks,

I find it very annoying how games like FoY or The Apprentice get so much publicity (even during the production phase); and games equally as good, if not better, like Legend Of The Lost Lagoon or Chronicles Of The Red Knight are only read about on the AGS site. I don't think it's because of the developer publicizing it, because the games are mostly picked up by magazines and the like; but certain are so hyped up and they don't turn out nearly as good as planned (I know the backgrounds, sprites, and music in FoY were great, but quite a few people, including myself, found it really glitchy; and we waited years for the demo). It seems like almost any game made by the South African AGS gamers (who are some of the best), buloght, Mordalles, and Afflict, aren't even reviewed on sites like Adventure Gamers. And it's not just because they're from an obscure location, there are famous AGSers from all over the place.

On the other hand, sorry for sounding so harsh about FoY, but I think that these other developers need some publicity too. I'm not saying that FoY is entirely bad, but we have some other good developers who are releasing games faster than Screen 7. I'm done telling my opinion, now I want to know what you guys think about this issue...

I've been pondering this a long time and finally decided to post something about it since it seems no one else has posted anything about it. No, I'm not making another game. I was playing Flight Of The Amazon Queen quite a while ago; the Interactive Interview in particular. I noticed that the 'game developers' were making another game called Stereo Jack. It looks really cool. I searched all over the net for the game, and only ended up finding jacks for a stereo. Here are some screens (Unfortunately, these are the only ones the FOTAQ game included):

A screenshot from the game. Looks good. The graphics remind me of that uber cool arcade game 'Comix Zone' from Sega.

A screen of me 'interviewing' the developer about it.

Some sort of concept art or storyboard. The black guy is the villain from the game.

Yeah. Cutscene art, I guess.

More cutscene art.

Does anyone know anything about this game? Was it canceled? Was it just a lame joke?

Critics' Lounge / Bone Character
Thu 28/12/2006 00:48:19
Well, after greatly improving my artwork, I've decided to finish the 2D Bone adventure game that I started a long time ago (which I acted too cocky about). Sorry. Anyways, here is a sprite I was working on today. Three colours. Not necessarily the final design, give me some suggestions for improvement. In my opinion, his left (our right) leg is too small compared to the other leg. I'm also not satisfied with the shading. Can you guys tell me how to fix these and other things? Thanks.

General Discussion / Help with Song Name
Fri 01/12/2006 02:19:58
I heard a song on the radio a long time ago, and then I heard the same song being played live at a waterpark I was at. It's a reggae tune (I think so), and I think it goes something like this (I made it sloppily, I know, but I was trying to give a simple version what the tune sounded like, as best as I can remember, since it was over two years ago) (if you know of a tune that sounds similar or a lot like this, tell me what it's called and who made it):

(scroll down and click download)

Thanks.  ;)

By the way, it was a love song, just so you know.

General Discussion / Any Jamaicans here?
Fri 10/11/2006 15:41:36
Hi, I am in preproduction of a game which takes place in Jamaica. I was wondering if someone from Jamaica, or someone who visits it frequently could help with this game, like giving me pictures of Jamaica (which I could use as inspiration for backgrounds), or they could voice act for this game (unless someone from outside Jamaica can put on a good Jamaican accent). If possible, they could help with the storyline. Could anyone interested please PM me? Thanks.

Critics' Lounge / Backgrounds For C&C
Fri 20/10/2006 18:19:53
Here are a few backgrounds that I'm using in a game. I'll explain in detail what I need critique on (oh, by the way, these are in the style of the artwork of 'lo_res_man', which is a cartoony out-of perspective-kind-of-thing in case some of you think these look familiar.Ã,

Ã,

This is a Jamaican house, what do you think?

Supposed to be a beach, but I'm not sure what details too add, any suggestions? Also need help making the yellowish stuff on the ground look like sand.Ã,

Ã,

A Jamaican outback, colors are a bit screwy since I made it a GIF (the program I used to convert to PNG puts a crappy 'Converted with whatever-the-name-of-that-program-was' label on the bottom of the image). I am satisfied with it, but I think it needs more details.

A road side. Again, I think there aren't enough details in it, what do you guys think (colors are not the original color either).

Yo AGSers, I am looking for someone who can compose MIDI music for a game I am working on. I can compose music, but I think a few more musicians would greatly speed up this aspect of the game. If you're interested, or if you want to find out more info about the game before you say 'yes', than PM me.
