General Discussion / Re: Fake game on eBay....

No, I doubt it. He's selling seven GBA games for 0.99 cents each right now (fakers sell their goods for cheap), and he's sold a bunch of other fakes to people (with negative feedback). I'll just file a report with eBay, tell Nintendo that they've got a pirate on their hands. Hopefully get a refund, and a free game!

General Discussion / Fake game on eBay....
Sat 22/09/2007 03:23:10
Well, I'm pretty ticked off right now- here's the situation: About 8 weeks ago I put a bid on a gameboy advance game (Final Fantasy V Advance). I won the item, sent the seller his money, two weeks later he says he hasn't received the money yet. 3 weeks ago, he finally contacts me, saying he got the money and he'll send the game. I got the game today, I play it, and decide to do something else. I saved my game. Then about 30 minutes later when I go back to play it, the saved data isn't there. So, naturally, I thought I'd consult the World Wide Web for answers. It turns out that this happens to people a lot, and my game was possibly pirated. So I search for a description of pirated games. My game matches those descriptions: wrong serial numbers, no Nintendo Seal of Approval on the front, the cartridge has something weird inside of it... etc.

So I reported the guy on eBay, and I messaged him, asking for a refund. Now my question is: have any of you had experience with bootleg GBA games? I may actually keep this game, because I don't want to bother buying another copy, but the save-game function is a bit wonky- at one point it only allows me to quick-save. I restart the cartridge, the game lets me do a regular save, as well as a quick-save. So I save my game (just to test), restart, and it won't let me load my game. Screwy, isn't it? Any advice?

I won't say any more in this thread, but I have one last suggestion for you, Rubacant. Don't post every single background you've made in this thread, okay? It seems like you've done that. Just take people's suggestions from one background and try to apply them to your other backgrounds.

1. Insults: Even if the insults were well planned out and were personal attacks on me, I wouldn't be thinking about that while they were saying it; I'd be focusing on the prize probably.
2. Punch: Non-fatal? Sure..
3. Nothing: Money isn't everything, I'd just be using the million for the same stuff I use money for now.
4. Bomb: I don't believe that the earth is gonna be around 5,000 years from now, and if it is, they'll probably be invulnerable to it, with all the technology they could have. Either that, or by that time, they've already colonized Mars, so it wouldn't have any effect on them.
5. Magic: That's just scary..

What was pointless  the new movie or the mask movie

The mask one. I have yet to check out the new one... I think I'll do that right now.

I want the last 1:32 of my life back! That was pointless. Although you had a cool mask-thingy.

You didn't really change any of those backgrounds, you just changed what was in the picture frames, essentially. It doesn't matter if you post any more, because you seem to be ignoring our advice, and you hardly change the backgrounds after months of us telling you how to improve them. I'm sure there are a few people who gave you suggestions for improvement about the perspective in all of your backgrounds- did you take their advice? No, you just threw a hissy-fit at them and flamed at them for criticizing your art. You need to learn to accept criticism, and until then, I suggest you stop posting your material, and read some other peoples' C&C posts to see how they handle criticism.
#28
I don't think he wants to improve his art because he thinks that when we say negative things about his art, or even give him constructive criticism to him, that we're attacking him personally. I've seen his posts in Beginner's Tech/Technical Forum and he ignores what people say in there too. Another thing Rubacant: If you're making a MM sequel/remake or whatever, why don't you use your own sprites instead of ripping them from MM deluxe?

Yeah, they all look around 10 except the Hoagie kid, he looks about in his early teens, perhaps? I love it how they steal all the dialog and sound effects directly from the game. :D

Looks like you just copied and pasted from screenshots of Maniac Mansion. For one, you could try using a graphics program to actually draw your own artwork. As well as that, you shouldn't be making 3 threads in C&C, asking for help with your backgrounds. If you have more than one background that you need help on, put them all in one thread, and if you have pre-existing threads with backgrounds for C&C in them, post your new ones in those threads. I've seen your posts before, and you turned one C&C thread into a warzone. Please follow my suggestions!

I know, why don't we lock this thread unless people can get back on what the original topic was, or at least something remotely similar to the topic.
#32
Good point m0ds, this wasn't a GiP thread. :=
Maybe Andail was getting bored with the lack of threads to lock in Adventure Related Talk and Chat, so he tried locking this one?

Dave's sprite and animation definitely look different than the other characters. It's a lot better! Are these all going to be for Lone Case 3 or whatever? If so, you should remake the other characters to fit with Dave's style. I also have a slight suggestion for the talking animations: include other frames of what the characters would normally be doing. For example: O'Reilly's mouth is moving, and that's the only part of his body moving while he's talking. If you want your animations to be a lot better, have him fidget the paper a bit, or move his hands slightly. As well, you need to include at least 2 frames per character for a blinking animation, it may not seem like a lot, but trust me- it can make your animations look 100% better!

Hmm.. I didn't know too much about him, except there was that Xbox360 game or something with his name as part of the title.. RIP

The actual perspective seems wrong for an adventure game. Is this for a cutscene?

Anyway, looks pretty good! Main character has a nice old disney cartoon feel to it.

Main character?? I don't see a main character... anyways, looking good, it reminds me a little bit of the art style from the 'Duckman' cartoons and game.. however I liked the rough edged style you had in your original version better, instead of the smoothing out job you did on the latest one. You should keep the same colours, just not have some things in the picture smooth, and some of the pictures rough-edged. It still looks good though, I really like the style!

Well, I like the premise of Flintlocked a lot better than these 3D games TellTale is dishing out. 2D adventure games will always be better than 3D ones. Cyrus: did the author say if they had made any progress on the game?

I like the graphics, downloaded and will play soon; but I've been noticing a pattern in all of your games so far- charming graphics mixed with lots of bugs! I like the graphics in this game a lot, but from what the other users are saying, it seems that not much time was put into the quality of the finished game. Do you test your games before releasing them, or at least get beta testers to do it for you?

This game looks gorgeous! I'm getting an erection just looking at these awesome graphics (okay, that was an exaggeration)- these are some of the best graphics I've ever seen in an AGS game, looks almost like screenshots from an abandoned LucasArts MI sequel! I'll be putting this on my 'Waiting-to-play' list! Keep us posted, Adam.

I believe it's Universal Music Group, but I probably won't go through all the trouble of getting permission to cover the song because:

1. It's not the original recording the Marley made.
2. The game is freeware, so obviously, the company wouldn't get any profits from it (unless they charged me to release a cover of it).
3. Technically, it's my own song; certain elements of the original song have been used in my version.

In theory, when people a song is "copyrighted", don't they mean that the 'recording' is copyrighted? Sometimes artists will use each other's lyrics (or portions of them) in songs- Marley himself did that to Curtis Mayfield with One Love/People Get Ready. Another thing that came to my mind: There are a lot of videos on YouTube- and other viral video sites- of bands/soloists covering (usually 'copying') a band/artist's song. These people aren't required to pay a fee to have their performances published on the internet for free viewing, I feel this is essentially the same thing.

Sounds like you just need to start finding yourself teams/games in development that you can muck in on. Do what yodaman does and offer your services in every possible GIP thread. ;)
And that helps to build up my credentials, Mr. 16-Games!

MillsJRoss: If you feel that you can't make a game on your own, I think the best option would be to join up with others to help them create their games, or recruit others to help you make your game.

For example: My art skills are horrible, after making my first, abysmally executed game (which I made on my own), I realized that I'd need people to help with the art in the game (among other things). I also seemed to be too busy to make a deep commitment on a full-length game, so I decided to compose music for other peoples' games- it really takes a lot of pressure off of you when you know that you're not the 'director' of a game.

As Nikolas said:
Quote from: Nikolasyou don't have to do everything yourself. As far as I've seen (very limited, but hey!) you are one heck of a worker, who just can't organise himself! find someone else then to do it! I'm sure as hell that 95% of the AGS population would love to be with you.

I know that a lot of satisfaction comes from making a great piece of work, and saying "I created this, single-handedly," but there are very few people who can make a game all by themselves (music, scripting, art, storyline, beta testing, etc.), even people who have made a game without a team haven't created everything in the game- take buloght's game (I forget the name- it was the pirate one)- he basically did everything in the game- except music (he got it from a freeware site). What it really comes down to: Are you willing to sacrifice the quality of the game to say, "I made this myself," or are you would you compromise, and have a group (or even just one or two people) help you create your game?

I may create some short games in the near future (probably under 10 rooms), but I'm more efficient working in a group, as well as the fact that honing a background can take hours for me, and I'm not satisfied with my work. I recommend that if you want to work on your own game(s), just do whatever you specialize in, and find others to help you.
