The competition is now closed and the winner is:
A Sloth for Both Seasons by CaptainD, Selmiak and Creamy.

Well done guys.

Topic: New Seasons
This month's guidelines were set by Matt Frith

"It's a new season for all of us but where we are in the world determines which one. Let's see if we can make some games that demonstrate the change from one season to another. For example having the winter snows thaw into the new growth of spring.  You could even create weird and wacky seasonal changes if you want."

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

Topic: Reality-on-the-Norm
This month's guidelines were set by Hobo, Peder, Atavismus, Jonas

Hey! It's the 15th anniversary of Reality-on-the-Norm this month! Y'all know what that means? It's time for a Reality-on-the-Norm Monthly Adventure Game Studio competition or RotNMAGS (not to be confused with rotten mags)!

Since the whole RoN universe can be a bit overwhelming for non-RoNers and new community members, the competition is not limited to RoN projects only and all other games are also very welcome as long as they are somehow related or include a reference to the RON universe (for example an in-game character is making a RoN game, there's a RoN poster on the wall etc.)

Rules summary:
- Make a RoN game or a game that has a RoN reference in it
- You can (but don't have to) use all the available RoN resources
- Join the anniversary celebration and dress for the occasion (optional)

[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/t3mtc5H.png[/imgzoom]

So what is Reality On The Norm, anyway?
The RON game series formed when some members of the AGS community decided to do a group project - although RON can best be described as a concept, rather than as a project in itself. It involves the creation of a central environment - in our case, the Reality-on-the-Norm town. Each member of the team creates his or her own game as a chapter to be added to all the previously achieved ones, thus creating a collective and diverse "book" of several independent yet coherent chapters.

If you're going for a Ron game and don't know where to start:
- Read this F.A.Q. about RoN universe
- Get familiar with some of characters
- Visit the AGS forums Reality-on-the-Norm subsection for extra information and advice
- Play some of the RoN games for inspiration

Two very important RoN policies: don't kill off other people's characters and don't reveal the bum's true identity.

Have a great month of RoN and MAGS everyone!

Ending: February 29th - Hooray for leap years! Extra day of dev :-D

General Discussion / The X-Files
Tue 26/01/2016 02:17:13
So, Mulder and Scully are back.
Let's talk about it :-)

Some thoughts about "My Struggle".
Spoilers in 'hide' tags of course.

Spoiler

I tried to avoid reviews but I had read some mixed opinions, mostly negative to be honest. But I mostly liked it.
I was expecting it to be sickeningly fan-servicey, which it was to some extent (the constant repetition of the phrase "want to believe" was bordering on ridiculous) but most of it was handled a bit more tastefully than I gave it credit for. For example, the 'pencils in the ceiling' shot, which I knew was an inevitability was actually handled a lot better than it was in the second movie, where it makes me cringe every time.

Some of the dialogue was sketchy, to say the least. Another wave of script editing might have done the trick. At one point, O'Malley said something like "I want to know my ass is hanging by more than just a slender thread." Sounds like they got three different people to write the beginning, middle and end of that sentence and not tell each other what they'd written.

This episode also highlighted one of the things that always kind of bothered me about The X-Files in general, especially later seasons. The fact that this is a show mostly about one man's quest to find out these deep dark secrets, but then there are just hundreds, if not thousands of scientists, doctors, soldiers and other military personnel, and god knows who else who seem to know all about it. It makes Mulder's look stupid. It was all much more dramatic when it seemed that it was all being done by a small mysterious group of men.

The new direction of the conspiracy seems interesting, although I confess I'm not 100% clear what that actually is. And another problem is that they didn't even acknowledge the the fact that aliens were supposed to have invaded on Decemmber 22nd 2012. Or was that stuff all part of the Massive Lieâ,,¢ that Mulder kept referring to in this episode? I'm a bit confused about that.

I did start this by saying I liked it though, and here's why (other than the simple fact that my favourite show of all time is back on TV):

I liked the Roswell stuff. Roswell has always fascinated me. Something happened on that day and we can only ever speculate as to what that was. This episode put a nice spin on it (although the CG of the injured Alien will not age well).

I actually liked the awkward relationship between Mulder and Scully. A lot of the shippers (who think they are fans of the show but are actually just fans of Mulder ans Scully's relationship) were very pissed off about their break-up, and haven't stopped crying about it on Twitter and giving Chris Carter a hard time. But I think it made sense. In fact it follws on naturally from the 2nd movie, which was already sowing the seeds for some incompatability issues. It worked and I think it is better for the show in that it can now focus more on the pair solving paranormal cases and less about them kissing and cuddling

So overal, yes it was a flawed episode of TV, especially for a mythology episode, but it was by no means as bad as some of the original episodes could be. And I hear stirrings that episodes 2 and 3 are better, so fingers crossed.

Topic: Depleted
This month's guidelines were set by Chicky and vertigoaddict

"Depleted", for example people can make a game about a person all dehydrated in the desert trying to find an oasis or an abandoned android trying to find a re-charge source compatiable with it's model or something like that. As long as the theme concentrates on the idea of something depleted, running out or burnt out, empty, about to be.

Any darts enthusiasts out there?

I used to played for my local vilage club, but it has been about 8 or 9 years since I was really into it. But a while ago I picked up a dartboard in a recycle shop and have finally got around to putting up.

Darts is an expensive hobby in Japan and they mostly use those awful soft-tip electronic machines where you're lucky if it even registers your score properly. Still I managed to get hold of some cheap steel-tips and off I go.

But then I thought: what I really need to top off my new set-up is a chalkboard. Of course I could have just bought a cheap one. But why buy anything when you can make it in AGS. So I did.

Here is my AGS Darts Chalkboard.
Download it here!

Feel free to check it out. It's probably only useful to me. If you don't play darts, you don't need it, and if you do you probably already have a real chalkboard.  But this was just a bit of a time-killing coding exercise.

Let me know what you think. And by all means, let's use this thread to talk about darts in general, if you are interested :-)

Sorry if this is easy peasy, but I can't work out what to do.

I'm making a scoreboard that writes each new score underneath the previous one. I thought I could do this with an unclickable list box, adding each new score as a new item on the list.

However, I can't get the score to display an integer. I thought it should work in the same way as displaying numbers through labels or display windows, like this:
Code: ags

listPlayerOne.AddItem("%d", playerOneScore);

but it doesn't seem to like it at all.

Is there another easy way to do this?

Thanks.

For those interested, the Premier League season kicks off in just a few days.

Goalscorer Challenge is kind of a mini, no-hassle version of Fantasy Football but, instead of choosing a whole team for the season and worrying about budget and transfers, here you simply select one player each Gameweek and how ever many goals he scores are added to your points total. Easy.

The only catch is you can only ever select any player once.

If you like how that sounds go here and sign up:
http://goalscorerchallenge.co.uk/

Once you've registered, had a look around and decided you want to have a go, then join the mini league I have created, The Big Blue Cup:

And type this password into the 'Join An Existing Minileague' field.

Let's reduce those numbers!
I especially want to make a severe dent in the top figure. No game should go completely unrated.
No special tasks this time. Just everybody play and rate as many games as you can from those lists.
You are also invited to leave a comment on at least some of the games that you rate, though this is not a rule.

Topic: 'Television'

This month's guidelines were set by Stupot and Eggie:

Ends: July 3rd

If the revolution will be televised, then television will be revolutionized. And you, AGSers, are the revolting ones.

The theme for this month is 'Television'. How you interpret that is up to you. Maybe your protagonist is an actual TV set. Maybe you choose to provide a satirical critique of the televisual arts. Or maybe your gameplay is inspired by your favourite show: Interactive TV shows; sitcom adventure game with it's own laugh track; 60s Batman with Telltale style moral choices; 24 with interaction in every split screen; Too Many Cooks: The Survival Horror... The possibilities are endless.

MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.

General Discussion / Hello Kittens 2015

On Wednesday, Cat and Raeff, Mandle and his wife Misa, and myself met up in Kawagoe, an area outside Tokyo famous for its old Edo-era shops and its own brand of tasty beer.

After that, Mandle took us to an off-the-beaten-track shrine and up a mountain to a hidden, overgrown cemetery. An adventurers paradise.

Then we went for cake and coffee before going our seperate ways.

It was great to meet some AGSers in the flesh. Thanks to Cat and Raeff for coming and I hope you enjoy the rest of your Japan adventure. And thanks to Mandle and Misa for taking us to some cool places.

I'll upload more pics soon, but in the meantime here's one of the five of us enjoying cake :-)

Hints & Tips / Power Nap
Sun 19/04/2015 07:02:52
I took the time to make a UHS-style walkthrough for Power Nap in case anyone finds it useful.

Power Nap Walkthrough

How do I play Power Nap?
Spoiler

To play this game you only need to remember two things.
Left-click = interact
Right-click = inventory

Power Nap is all about the quest for the perfect power nap. You win the game only when you have met all of the requirements for the perfect 20-minute power nap. When you think you have met the requirements, press the 'Take a nap' button.

What are these 'perfect requirements'?
Spoiler

There are five requirements in total.
1) Get rid of the drilling noise outside.
2) Make sure there are no distractions.
3) Do something to block out the bright lights.
4) Find a nice cosy spot to take your nap.
5) Make sure the boss can't catch you napping on the job.

How do I stop the drilling noise?
Spoiler

This is the easiest 'puzzle' in the whole game. Simply close the window by clicking on it once.
[close]

How do I make sure there are no distractions?
Spoiler

Perhaps there is a way to stop the phone from ringing.
Spoiler

Try unplugging the phone.
[close]
[close]

How do I block out the lights?
Spoiler

If the boss sees that your light is off, or that your blind is closed, it may arouse suspicion. Maybe there is some other way to stop light from reaching your eyes.
Spoiler

Maybe you could use a blindfold.
Spoiler

Try fashioning one yourself from the items you are carrying.
Spoiler

Are you carrying the elastic band? (If not, click on the desk.)
Spoiler

Are you carrying the two leaves? (If not, click on the plant on the shelf)
Spoiler

Combine the leaves and the rubber band to make a rudimentary blindfold.

(You don't have to do anything with the blindfold. Simply having it means you have solved this puzzle.)

How do I find a nice cosy space?
Spoiler

You can't sleep at your desk. The boss could see you through the window.
Spoiler

How about that big open space on the floor beneath the notice board? Try clicking on the space. Oh. It says you need some sort of pillow.

How do I make a pillow/cushion?
Spoiler

Well what is a cushion? It's a piece of fabric with some kind of stuffing.

How do I make stuffing?
Spoiler

Maybe you can use the shredder for this?

What do I shred?
Spoiler

Try clicking on the small note of the noticeboard for a clue.

Spoiler

The note says the newspapers will be ready soon. Try calling reception again. This time you can request a newspaper.

What can I stuff?
Spoiler

How about some item of clothing?

Okay, but the cushion is falling apart. How can I keep it together?
Spoiler

There must be some generic piece of office equipment designed for just this kind of problem.
Spoiler

Use the stuffed jumper on the stapler. Now you have a cushion.

What do I do once I have a cushion.
Spoiler

Use it on the space beneath the notice board. Now you have a cosy place for your nap.

How do I make sure the boss can't catch me.
Spoiler

You have to make it look as though you are still sitting awake at your desk.

How do I do that?
Spoiler

Perhaps if you had a picture of yourself.
Spoiler

You can photocopy your own face.

But the photocopier won't work.
Spoiler

It needs more paper. There is some on the shelf.

Thanks. So what now?
Spoiler

Well, presuming you have sellotape and ruler, you can just stick the photocopy to the ruler.

What sellotape? What ruler?
Spoiler

Did you even try searching the desk?
Spoiler

Oh. Whoops.
Spoiler

Whoops, indeed.

Okay. So I think I've done the five tasks. What next?
Spoiler

Well now you can take a nap.  So what better time is there to press the 'Take a nap' button.  If you are still yet to fulfil the requirements, the game will let you know.

I've finished the game, but...
Spoiler

It says I got the BAD ending. How do I get the good ending?
Spoiler

This means you either you got defensive with Janine in your answer machine message, or you questioned her logic. Either that or you just didn't call her and leave a message at all.

To get the good ending you should have apologised to her. That's all she wanted. Why not play again and see?

It says I got the GOOD ending. How do I get the bad ending?
Spoiler

This means you apologised to Janine in the answer machine message. Had you done otherwise, things may not have worked out quite as planned. Why not play again and see?

I've played both endings. Now what?
Spoiler

Well, you could always leave a rating and a comment for Power Nap on the AGS game page: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1912/
and, if there is still time, you could also vote for Power Nap on the game's Adventure Jam entry page here: http://jams.gamejolt.io/adventurejam/games/power-nap/58788

Much of my spare time over the past two weeks has been spent making a game for Adventure Jam and MAGS on the theme of 'Sleeping'.

That game is 'Power Nap'.

Join our intrepid hero, Greg, on a quest for the perfect power nap. Twenty minutes of pure bliss awaits. Only trouble is, the boss is cracking down on nappers. Can you get a decent power nap without getting fired?

The game features hand-painted watercolours that I think are a notable improvement over those of Hen Man. There are also two endings based on a decision made earlier in the game. Also featuring is an awesome song I found on the Free Music Archive called 'Nap' by a band called Wimps. They are my new favourite band and you should check them out.

Gorgeous hand-painted title screen

Gorgeous hand-painted inventory

Gorgeous photo-realistic photocopier

640x400 32-bit colour

I think that's about it...

Oh wait...

Download .Zip Here
The AGS game page is here (although at the moment it just refers to the same Gamejolt page): http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/1912/
And you can even vote for it here (if you want): http://jams.gamejolt.io/adventurejam/games/power-nap/58788

Please enjoy it. And as always, feedback is gratefully received :-)

I'm sure I'm being thick, but how do I get the mouse cursor to change graphic over a hotspot and ONLY on the hotspot? It's one thing getting to to change over the hotspot, but when I roll off the hotspot again I want it to automatically go back to the original graphic.

I know this is easy but I just can't seem to work it out.

"Where is X?" threads must be a massive ego boost for X. Somebody better make a thread for me if/when I go AWOL.

He wrote this a week ago and hasn't posted since. I'm worried about him. Moreover, I am eagerly awaiting the theme of this month's MAGS. Come back Atelier. We love you xxx

If you follow these things at all (or if you've seen my Facebook wall) you'll know things have been stirring in the Fox camp for a few months now. And today they finally made it official.

Mulder and Scully are coming back!

It'll be a special 6 episode event series, which is absolutely fine with me. There has never been a better time to bring back the show. People are paranoid about the government again, the show has been all over Netflix garnering a new generation of fans, Kumail Nanjiani's XFilesFiles podcast has been uber-popular (and is brilliant if you haven't given it a listen yet).  People have been begging for a new movie ever since the last one flopped in 2008. This isn't a movie, this is better.

I'm absolutely over the moon about this news. How do you you guys feel?
