General Discussion / Countdown
Thu 22/03/2007 01:09:34
No this isn't a Tribute to Richard Whitely OBE, but more of a cry for help.

As some of you may know I'm going to Japan for a working holiday, and I've just booked my flight.
I'm really excited about it all and I want to put a countdown timer on my blog and/or website for my leaving date..
I did a search in google but the only ones it came up with were either plastered in adverts or had to be paid for.

Does anybody know any good sites where I might be able to find a decent timer that is FREE and doesn't look shite.
Cheers Guys, I appreciate it.

General Discussion / The Crap Joke Thread
Sun 18/03/2007 00:08:23
I read a joke today that had me groaning for about 10 minutes solidly afterwards.
I thought I'd share it with you guys. Then I thought why not dedicate an entire thread to those jokes which are not so funny, but have you groaning with a kind of reluctant respect for their cheesyness and charm.

Here's the one that started it.

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him:

A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

I told you it was crap.

Critics' Lounge / My Website
Wed 14/03/2007 20:29:56
I have made my website look and feel a little bit more like a webiste ( before it was just a page with some links on and a logo.
What do you guys think of its new look.
www.toxicsock.co.uk
Some pages are the same as I just used the home page as a template for the others and content is a little on the slim side.
But ignoring these things, what do you think of my style, logo and layout?

Can anyone help me?... I went to turn the computer on yesterday and it says it needs a boot disk?Ã,  Why would it say this, It's never needed it before (except maybe when I first ran it).

I don't know anything about hardware so any assistance would be great.

First It says "Auto-Detecting Pri-Master". What is this? and how might it be affecting my computer?
Then it beeps a couple of times and saysÃ,  press f1 to resume, so I do and it asks for a boot diskette.

Something similar happened before and I took the USB cable for my Digital Camera out of the socket and it worked fine, but now it still does it even when there is nothing in any of the USB ports.

Any ideas, however seemingly useless will be great, I'd hate to think I've lost everything I've been working on.

Cheers Guys.

PS Im on my mums computer incase you were wondering how I could type this without a computer ;)

Here's my latest background I've been working on.Ã,  You'll notice there isn't a toilet in the cubicle, I have a very specific reason for that ;) so don't worry.

Any helpful comments will be gratefully received.

General Discussion / Navigation troubles...
Mon 05/03/2007 00:07:45
Is anyone else having this problem or is my computer going crazy...
Ever since the last time i logged in, and go onto a page, it shows me an older version of the page and i have to hit refresh to see the new posts.. do you get what i mean?
I never had to do that before.

I've just realised, that it seems to be taking me to a snapshot of the last time i visited that page.. I just clicked on one and the clock said 18:07 or whatever and then I hit refresh and It jumped to the present time.

I'm sure my computer doesn't belong to Sam Beckett so why does it keep going back in time?

www.ToxicSock.co.uk presents...
A Window Cleaner's Apprentice

Summary:
Today's Friday, and Tom wakes up to the day with the kind of enthusiasm reserved only for Payday. He finds he has two messages from his master on his answerphone. It seems Dick has got lost on his way home from the pub, despite living only two doors away from it.
Tom thinks his master may be in danger, and vows to save him. It is going to be a long and perilous quest, but Tom will get his wages... err... I mean save his master.

Expect: A flirty older woman, two dirty old men playing cards, a drunkard with his pants down, a bucket, a sponge and a squeegy.

Progress
Puzzles 90%
Story 90%
Scripting 2%
Graphics 15%
Sound 10%

*The Puzzles and Storyline are all pretty much sorted out in my head and on paper.Ã,  I've put them at 90% because I'm sure I will be forced to change some of these during the scripting process becasue I'm likely to encounter problems here.
*This is only a small game with about 15 usable items and 10 NPC's.
*The game is semi-linear in that some of the puzzles can be completed in any order but some cannot be completed until others are out of the way.
*I've setup a general basis for the scripting, but I won't start on it until I have all the backgrounds, sprites and objects made.

Graphics
I have all the rooms sketched in a book and some basic frames on the computer but only two finished backgrounds as yet.

Characters
Tom is a Window Cleaner's Apprentice, He's in his early 20s and is a laid back kinda guy, but when he thinks his boss is in danger the first thing he thinks about is his wage packet.

This isn't a sprite, just a general idea of what he will look like.Ã,  I might call upon a hand in creating a walkcycle becasue I'm a useless animator, but I'll cross that bridge when I've got a decent starter sprite and I'll post it in the relevent forum.

Check back for updates.

Critics' Lounge / Living room
Thu 01/03/2007 01:08:11
This is a living room to a small flat which also happens to be where my main character sleeps.
I've gone for this montagey effect which I've been playing with lately and I'm liking it.

A few finishing touches are needed as well as a bit of shading but what does everyone think so far?

Can anyone spot the reference to another AGS game?

Critics' Lounge / Tom - My Main Character
Sat 17/02/2007 22:02:14
My main character is Tom - "A Window Cleaner's Apprentice".

This isn't officially a sprite, it's just a sort of preliminary concept peice, but what does everyone think of him so far?

PS, please dont mention the fact that he has a pigs nose, i don't know how that happened.

General Discussion / Am I making things up?
Wed 14/02/2007 16:24:35
I was chatting to a friend and we got talking about the possibility of creating a game that starts of with deliberately average graphics but they get better or worse depending on how well you play?
Then I thought something similar to this had already been done.
I'm sure there's been a game where the graphics built up as you played, starting in a wireframe environment but gradually more and more polygons being added as you played?
I only have a vague memory of seeing or reading about something like this and it's quite possible I'm making it up.

Does anyone know what game I might be going on about, if indeed such a game exists?

(not necessarily an adventure game.. most probably a shoot 'em up or something).

General Discussion / Buying a Domain Name
Mon 12/02/2007 21:03:57
What is the cheapest and/or best place to buy a Domain Name from?
I've been trying for ages to think of a good name, and I've been using Easily.co.uk to check for availability, but what sites did you all get your various domains from and are they cheap?
#332
Ignore the fact that there is no colour.

What does everyone make of the perspective in this pcture, does it look realistic?

Ignore all the lines as well, they will be replaced by colouring but i just put them there to make the picture look busier and try to emphasise the perspective.

All comments welcome.

The title of this thread speaks for itself.

I've just found a Day of the Tentacle/Sam and Max Hit the Road double box set from 1993 in a charity shop for 50p... haha... I only went in there to find my mum a jigsaw puzzle.

Hey, I've made it to day 5 of this masterpeice and I got stuck.  I'm afraid to admit I resorted to the walkthrough, but either it was wrong or I've found a bug.

I've found the remains of Matthew DeFoe and the walkthrough says I need to get another Occult book, the black one.  but when I click on the shelf nothing happens, I've tried clicking on everything and I can't get it.

I think that it may be a bug and that I was supposed to get the book before digging up the tiles... unless anyone else knows what I'm doing wrong.

Cheers guys.

Hi guys, I'm new to this, but I promise I've tried to work this out for myself before I posted this message, but I'm not having much luck finding the answer.

I'm on the first screen of my game and I want to walk behind this fence:

But no matter where I place the baseline, there are always moments when the character will either disappear from in front of the fence, or pop out from behind.

I think this is because of it's isometric perspective.Ã,  I was wondering if there was any way around this.Ã,  It would be good if you could tilt the baseline (there's an idea for the next version).

If all else fails I'l just have to make it so that the character can't walk directly behind the fence, just on the patch of grass that is visible... which brings me to my second question:

I can't figure out wether or not there is a way to Erase or backtrack parts of the "walkable area", so I looks like I'll have to delete the whole mask and redo it with my admendments... Is this the case or am I missing something obvious.

Thanks for reading, I promise I won't be one of these annoying people that constantly posts questions which should easily be found in the FAQ.
