AGS Games in Production / Re: Herd is Coming

This looks wicked. All the best with it :-)

@VW You could frame it so that these boys all have their smartphones taken away from them, so they have to go and find something to do the way we used to have to. Then they come across their mystery in a more 80s way.

Well done Jack. Although my answer clearly set it up for you  :=

Oh was that not right then?
Damn!

Looks like a fun project. All the best with it.

Still a few more days left to vote and it's still pretty tight between all four entries.

I actually want it to be good. Like ‘good good', not ‘so bad it's good'. I'm not going to waste my money watching it ironically. It baffles me that they would even bother to make this movie at this point in time if they weren't going to actually try and make a good film.

I have doubts, but part of me hopes there's actually a good film in the can and they just ballsed up the CG. I hope that they'll go away and redo Sonic, cut a new trailer without Gangster's Bloody Paradise, and try again. If they're not going to try to repair the damage after the ridicule they've received from the trailer, then they're morons.

I'm OK with it if Retro Wolf is.

Technically, even "outer space" is in space  8-)

Another great theme :)
Indeed. We've had a string of really unique themes. I was glad we got 4 entries last month in the end. It was looking like a no-show for a while there, and I was thinking it would be such a waste of a cracking theme.

This month's theme is also amazing. Let's not waste this one either  (wrong)

Let me get one thing out the way. I love Jim Carrey and always will. I owe this guy so much. This role does seem to be a hark back to his classic era. I don't know if that is a bad thing in and of itself. I think Carrey as Robotnik is a great casting decision (would have been better 25 years ago but oh well). This does look like it might be a bit of a bad movie, but there are plenty of things wrong with it before we come to Jim Carrey. I'm hoping he makes it his own. I'm actually quite excited for this film.

I wouldn't call Carrey a has-been. Yes he has been in some films and he has been through some personal problems and he has been out of the limelight for a little while, but I think there's room in Hollywood for middle-aged Jim Carrey.

The Rumpus Room / Re: What grinds my gears!

Yeah. I saw a lot of people complaining about the lighting decisions of the latest GoT episode. I haven't got around to the new series yet but I will remember to turn the brightness up.

Time to find out what you've all been doing in there all month.

Two games. Please vote using the poll above.

Topic: What are they doing in there?
Chosen by: Retro Wolf
Deadline: May 31st

Maybe there's somebody suspicious making some strange noises in their shed.
Maybe you need to sneak in when they're not around.
Perhaps the player is the one building something secret that they don't want other people to know?
Is the person innocent and the neighbours are just paranoid and nosy? Maybe they're brewing alcohol during prohibition! Maybe it's a killer robot about to be unleashed on the world and no one believes you!

These are just ideas and the theme can be interpreted in any way you wish.
Previously made graphics and sounds can be used.

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

As we say goodbye to MAGS April and prepare to welcome the new era of MAGS May, it's worth pointing out that Japan has literally just waved goodbye to the 30-year imperial era of Heisei and is embarking on a new era known as Reiwa. So this MAGS theme was pretty well-timed.

Just a few days ago it was looking like a dry month, but we've suddenly ended up with four entrants, so well done, folks.

Vote for your favourite using the poll above.

General Discussion / Re: Notre Dame
Wed 24/04/2019 01:08:57
As well as Khris' comment above, I've seen so many memes and people comparing Notre Dame to other tragedies like Grenfell Tower and asking why billionaires didn't fall over themselves to give money to the other tragedies.

While Notre Dame was burning, everyone was all about how sad it was. This great cultural heritage up in smoke. It turned out to have been a little exaggerated and the building wasn't completely destroyed. But if you read Twitter or FB you'd have seen the outpouring of emotion and mourning from everyone. It's little wonder that those with money felt compelled to play the hero, jump on the bandwagon and knee-jerkingly offer great sums of money to help rebuild the cathedral.

But the bandwagon of the not-so-rich turned into ‘oh it's not actually that much of a tragedy, what about Grenfell?' And now those billionaires are being criticized for stepping up.

I think it's kind of pointless comparison. Regardless of Notre Dame one could always ask ‘why don't billionaires donate more to good causes?' It's a good question but nothing to do with famous cathedrals. We're only asking it now because some of them actually have pledged money to a good cause... except this good cause is suddenly seen as less worthy because it's just a building and no lives were lost.

In fact more than 26 million pounds was raisedfor Grenfell, which is a good number, although not nearly enough to permanently rehouse all of the survivors (or bring back those who died). It seems very odd to blame rich people for that, though.

Seriously, good luck with the release, guys.
It looks great.

Saw Noroi (The Curse) today. Iirc from 2005.

Decent japanese horror movie, supposedly based on a real case.
I feel like I've probably seen that, but I can't really remember it. I'll give it another look.

I tried watching Rings, the recent Hollywood Ring sequel. I couldn't make it past the first two minutes. The first thing the guy says is "Have you heard the story about the videotape that if you watch it you die seven days later?" Yeah, not too on-the-nose there, mate. If someone tells me it's worth pushing through that awful intro, then I'll give it another go.

I watched Pet on Netflix the other day. More thriller than horror, but it was a pretty cool twist on the 'guy-kidnaps-girl' mechanic. Worth a look.

I also got around to watching Don't Breathe, which was fun, but not really what I was expecting.
