Decored: a Lara Croft adventure
Tomb Raider 2D demake
A legendary treasure hidden in an ancient temple, Lara Croft is looking for it. Ready for 3d action, jumping very high and shooting enemies in middle air? ...Not this time. It's the old 2D folks,  Lara have to do the usual avoiding traps - solving enviroments - fighting monsters in the classic point and click way. Maybe her thoughest challenge.

Nice theme. I think I would use nested spoiler tags with different options in. Is that allowed, rather than hyperlinks?

Only a few more days, folks. Let's all pitch in.

Panteufelhelden: Swiping Satan's Slippers
5 Imps 1 Bod = One Hell of a Party Game!
You and your demon buddies were house-sitting for Lucifer, when no-good cultists opened a portal to Hades and stole Satan's slippers. Get them back before all hell breaks loose (literally)!  Your only way onto Earth is by possessing the cult's human sacrifice. Stuck in one body, you all have to work together to control it and retrieve the infernal footwear.  One player points and clicks, others type suggestions in a chat window to unlock actions. Roles rotate regularly.

Dunning-Kruger Quest
How many conspiracy theories can you absorb in an hour?
You wake up with no memory of who you are or what is going on, but then you realize that you're just very dumb and this happens to you every morning.
Explore the rich environment of your parents' basement for hints for the next conspiracy videos you'll upload including:
Finding a stale corn chip that looks like the Illuminati symbol.
Two identical rats proving Simulation Theory.
Your F-scored tests from school proving your teachers were shape-shifting reptiles.
And much more!

Mutiny at Mercury
A robot has to prevent a great crime without breaking the laws themself
You are a robot working at a mining station at mercury, and programmed to follow Asimov's three laws of robotics. When a small group of workers start conspiring to start a mutiny and kill the overseer, you are compelled to stop them but simultaneously forced to obey all commands of the mutineers and loyal workers alike and unable to harm any of them. You need to think out some clever loopholes to save the day.

Yo, New Kid Gotta Steal Sumpin
Steal or get beat up.
New-kid-on-the-block Logan is having a tough time. His dad got fired, so Logan and his parents had to downgrade to a different neighborhood. The dire financial situation is too much for Logan's parents; they yell...often. To escape the tension in the house, Logan spends time outside but is confronted by a gang of neighborhood kids. They say Logan has to steal “something weird” from Old Man McGregor's scary house before he can join the gang. Steal or get beat up.

Game Pitch Competition - Round 9: “What's Wrong With This Pitch-er?”

The object of the competition is to present the best possible "elevator pitch" for an original adventure game.
Come up with a cool idea, and explain it very briefly to someone in order to catch their interest and make them excited about it. (Check out the last round to see how it goes.)

You probably know the drill by now, but if you don't...

Spoiler
Procedure

  • Submit your game pitch via this form.
  • I will post the entries (anonymously) as they come in, in order to inspire others to join.
  • Submissions close 12th February. I will then open a thread poll for voting.
  • Voting will last 7 days. Discussion and feedback on the entries is encouraged, but make sure to maintain anonymity.
  • After voting is over, the results and authors of each entry become public.
Rules

  • The pitch should be for some kind of adventure game (under a broad definition of the genre).
  • Stick to the word limits: An elevator ride is not that long! (If you run over, those parts will be placed behind spoiler tags.)
  • You may submit only one entry in the round.
  • The entry should be anonymous. Do not reveal your authorship until voting closes.
  • Do not vote for your own entry. It's not cool.
[close]
I'm looking forward to your pitches!

Dressing up
This month's topic was chosen by cat.

February is carnival time, so let's put on some costumes! Some ideas to get you started:

  • A cosplayer assembles his outfit for a comic convention
  • A teenage girl searches for the perfect prom night dress
  • Kids need to find hat and scarf for their snowman

In the end someone or something should be dressed up wearing something fancy (or fail miserably trying).

Feel free to use any existing material but let us know which parts you reused and what was originally created for this competition.

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

Votes have started trickling in now (5 so far - thanks to those people). No need to rush at this point but I'll be bumping every 7 days or so to remind everyone. Can we beat last year's number of 22 voters?
#1573
Oh. Good to know. Thanks for the heads up. And best of luck with the board game.

If no one else wants to, I don't mind hosting it again. I was a bit slack last time I hosted it because I suddenly got stupidly busy, but I should be good to go in Feb.

The Rumpus Room / Re: Suburbs Of Hell
Wed 23/01/2019 10:56:02
A suburb for people who stop at the top of an escalator when there are people being unloaded off the escalator behind them.
Punishment. An eternity of being trampled at the top of the busiest escalator in the busiest train station at rush-hour.

Hasn't this ship sailed? Everyone seems to have quietened right down about crypto and none of them are driving Ferrari's yet.

Well done to whoever wrote Luck Goblins. That was my 2nd choice after Dash and Nicky.

I now have an embarrassing admission and public apology. My entry was Bedroom Vigilante. It wasn't until I saw cat's comment that I realized I had essentially ripped off Snarky's idea from the previous round. It's made even worse by the fact that I even voted for Snarky's pitch last time and thought it was brilliant. But had completely forgotten all about it by the time I came to write my pitch for this month. So sorry, Snarky.

In fact, Bedroom Vigilante wasn't initially supposed to be a Rear Window ‘em up at all. When I first started thinking about it I was thinking of the book “Sorry, Wrong Number” which I read last month. It's about an invalid woman on her own in an apartment who, due to some crossed wires, learns of a plot to murder a woman (her). The whole book (film, play etc) is set in one room and the woman makes a lot of phone calls in order to eventually find out the truth. It was from there that I thought I could combine it with Rear Window and have the protagonist solve a series of crimes with the telephone. So Snarky's pitch may have been in the back of my mind somewhere but I wasn't consciously thinking of that when it came to my pitch.

In answer to your questions, Snarky, I didn't actually intend for the character to be unlikeable. I actually envisioned him as just a downtrodden guy who's just had enough of being too scared to leave his room and decides to do his bit to make the streets a little safer. As far as examples go, I imagined there would be multiple solutions to every puzzle but you'd also be looking at routines. So, for example, you would use the phone to send a pizza delivery to inturrupt a crime or call a public phone box to warn a passer by of a mugger waiting just around the corner. That kind of thing but preferably with lots of little side-stories and mini-character arcs.

We're halfway (and a bit) through the month. How are things looking? Are we heading for Dry January?

Maniac Mansion / Alice in Wonderland sounds insane.
#1579
Voting is over and we have a winner.

Congratulations, Cat. And thanks for bringing Cornelius back.
#1580
Thanks for the votes so far. Now's The chance to get yours in if you haven't so far.

Slightly different topic.
I'll be opening up a MAGGIES thread as soon as we have a winner for December.
Does anyone have any suggestions/requests/problems with how we did it last year (if you can remember)? I'm thinking of maybe ditching the points system and just getting everyone to choose their top 3 in any order and counting the votes that way.

Cheers.
