I'm about 99% sure that's not the case (give or take 1%).
From what I can gather, the word 'undertaker' really does come from the verb 'to undertake' which means to accept or take charge of a task or duty.  I'm pretty sure we'd still call them undertakers even if their job was to hang the dead from trees instead of bury them.

Ooh I can't wait!
I'm almost as excited for this as I was for the Lost finale (sorry for spamming your news feeds, those of you who have me on Facebook).  Let's hope these stories make even less sense than Lost did.

[This post was my 2000th birthday and I bloody missed it... DAMN!]

Same... My picture was absolutely rubbish (despite being one of my personally better peices of work)... I apologise now to the author whose words I turned into the pile of crap I call my 'picture'.

I'm pretty pleased with my additions to the stories though :)

PS: ...by the way, I believe Steve was joking when he wrote that comment about the 6 feet under stuff.

Quite right.
Didn't mean for my comment to overtake the thread.

Steve, you should get a job as an 'overtaker'.

It means the same thing.
Think of it like this.  A man is paid to take up the job of dealing with dead bodies and carrying out funeral arrangement... that's a pretty big 'undertaking'.  OED definitions of the term 'undertaker' include 'one who undertakes a task or enterpise' and 'one who aids or assists'... well that is exactly what the man's job is.  To undertake a rather grizzly and diffifult task.  So the term became used to describe the man's job and eventually became the official title of his occupation.

Agreed it is a bit Sex-ed, which I don't really want.

A friend suggested I swap the family planning clinic into a seedy back-street abortionist, and that got me thinking about ways of making it more of an adult game involving prostitution and crime.

I'm thinking of adding in monopoly-style money - each player is a hooker and you get different amounts for different sexual favours you provide... And on every pass of the board you have to give a certain percentage of your earnings to a pimp.  But I'd have to change the focus away from the pregnancy thing and make that an extra objective - avoiding pregnacy and aids.

Instead of an abortion card, you have to pay for an abortion using your hard earned money... but you have to save up enough money.

Drugs would have to play a role in a game about prostitution.  Im thinking of just having cards in the pile that say things like.  "You just bought a bag of heroin. Pay £100" (I'd have to do my research obviously:P) or "you just sold some heroin. Take £100"... I could make it well complicated where each player has a stash, which they can buy or sell to other players for different values (perhaps a die or spindel could determine the "current street value" when needed), but i'm already over-complicating things and will end up doing a Wonkyth.

Any other ideas?  It wouldn't surprise me if something like this has been done before, but fuck it.

Possible title : 'The Game: the game"?

Jim and Scarab.  Both your games sound great.  I never really got into stats/strategy based board/card games (despite enjoying RPGs on the computer).  I was always more of a Cluedo/Monopoly kind of man.

Oh, I might as well share what I've got so far:

Does anybody here have any experience designing board games?
What kind of game was it?  How complex did you go?

What are the best home-made board games you've ever played?

-------------

The reason I'm asking this is because I'm in the middle of designing a board game based on an idea I had about 4 years ago but never got around to doing anything about it.  Now, I've written a preliminary set of rules and will have a preliminary game board mapped out very soon, and I was wondering if anyone is interested in helping me 'beta test' it.  I'll send you a copy of the board and the rules and let you play it with some friends and family for a while, then you can get back to me with comments and suggestions.

I was also wondering if anyone who is good at art would like to take a break from AGS and help me out by drawing the game board and making it look sexy, once the design specifications are set in stone (which won't be for a couple of weeks or months yet).

Please PM me about these things, because I want this thread to be reserved for discussion about home-made board games in general.

Looks great.  I wish I'd caught the demo.  Are we to expect a new demo soon?

Quote from: Sinsin on Wed 19/05/2010 14:29:53Heroine is addictive where people go out and rob people for a fix.

I think that's more to do with the price of a fix.  Cigarettes are much more easy to afford on a regular income... And if a smoker is strapped for cash, he or she will either try to blag one or two off a friend (promising to pay them back, but never doing so) or else they'll try to borrow the cigarette money.  Whereas a smackhead needs more money more frequently, the kind they can't just blag off a mate temporarily.  So they're forced into stealing and robbing and selling their bodies.

Let it be known that some smokers will steal... cigarettes are easily the number one thing that goes missing on nights out (or maybe 2nd after money, but thats coz it was spend on beer, not stolen)... And, I've known people to make their own rollies out of the leftover butts in ashtrays... if that's not desperation I don't know what is.

Although looks like they haven't been active for a while, so I doubt they'd mind if you used the name.

Well.... I think my avatar gives it all away....:)

Avatars lie... I'm a strict non-smoker.  But I still suffer from procrastination problems... maybe its the caffine... or masturbation.

I don't think anyone really associates smoking with being cool anymore... except maybe 12-year-old boys... but that the problem... most smokers do so because they have done from an early age when they stupidly thought they were being cool and rebellious pinching cigarettes off their auntie, or getting grown ups to buy fags for them...  It's all so sneaky and fun and tehres the risk of getting told off by your mum...

They probably don't think like that when they grow, but it's too late... they still smoke because they're addicted, and fuck it, all their friends smoke anyway.

I think every smoker should give up the habit the day their parents find out, because lets face it, thats the reason you started in the first place.

When I think of Glam I immediately think of T-Rex, and Sweet.  If you don't mind going back in time a bit.  Sweet are cheesy as fuck, but T-Rex are awesome.

I'm stuck...

Spoiler
...in the dolls house.
I've found the magnetic boy, and I've used him on every magnet, to no avail. And I've used Kelvin on the broken wire to light up the Hugo and Paul board, but I can't do anything else... I'm obviously missing something.  Ibi can't tow the cabinet under the water, none of them can move the wardrobe, so I can't get to the exit behind it, and none of them can open the trapdoor so I can't go upstairs.

Cheers :)
