I think it's easy to generalise any character and say it in a smarmy tone to make it out that they were lazily written... just like the much-used saying that there are only 7 plots.  So sure, you can generalise any story and say 'oh god not another revenge tale', 'oh, great, rags to more bloody riches' or 'here we go, boy meets girl again'... but it's what you do with those general plots that makes a good story

And the same goes with characters... yes you can generalise them and package them into 'damsel in distress', 'everyman' or 'utter and complete superbitch', but that doesn't necessarily mean they're not interesting people.  Sometimes damsels just get themselves into distressing situations.  And if the prince who saves her happens to be charming, don't write him off just yet... he could be a really complex guy, sweetheart.

One thing missing from your version that the original had going for it:

Stig In!

Next time I make a webpage I'm going to have 'Stig In' somewhere on the page.

How about Skull Island ( 48.6394, -122.985 ) in the rather creepily named Massacre Bay?

We could have an "Recruit a Team" booth at the event to complement the thread of the same name on these here boards.

We could prepare a little book of adverts and calls for help from developers (AGS or otherwise).  Each advert just outlining the project and the kinds of help wanted and contact details.  The "booth" could consist of a simple pin-board format, or maybe something a bit more thought-out.

Mods, you could also ask the attending compaies if they fancy bringing along details of possible vacancies to the event.  And encourage attendees to bring a little portfolio of work with them incase they happen to get talking to the right people.

As well as being a celebration of games from the past and a preview of games just-around-the-corner, AdventureX could also end up being the birthplace of some amazing new projects.

I subscribe to JustAdventure's RSS feed and they have a least 1 new update a day... including interviews and features... they might not do much to the website as often, but they're still keeping up with adventure games.

Ditto Dual.
These are exciting times to be a adventure gamer in general... and very exciting times to be an AGSer... and I can only forsee things getting better and better, at least for the next couple of years.

Sometimes, as much as I love adventures, and as much as I'd love to design my own one, I just have to admit to myself that I probably haven't quite got the passion* needed to get stuck into the task.  I still intend to finish the game I've started making, because I think it will be good.  But progress is slow, and it always will be, because if I'm honest, it's never going to be my main priority.

(*Not to mention the skills)

I wish I had been around to try and romance this Miss Chelle character... she sounds interesting.

This reminds me of when I was about 12, and me and my mate were too scared to say 'Candyman' five times in the mirror.  We'd always threaten to, and then chicken out, replacing the 5th Candyman with 'cameraman' or 'candyfloss' or something similar.

But, yeh, anyway...  the point is... I was 12.

Well?
How was it?

I haven't been updating much lately, but then I have nothing useful to say.
But for those who do have something useful to say Twitter can be a very handy tool.
And remember it's not just about tweeting, it's about following too... and if you follow the right people, it can be really fun.

mine is StuartForbes... feel free to add me but I don't tend to Tweet much.

Hey Esper.
I served Tom Baker in the local grocery shop a month or so ago...
He was the rudest, nastiest bully I've ever had the misfortune to serve in over 6 years of retail work.

This is great new for Ben and Dan and also really good news for AGS.  Hopefully it will attract more people to the genre, and encourage more people to have a go at making their own.

Well played Zombie Cow!

Does anyone remember Madmail.com, years ago?
They just one day decided to stop... can't remember the reasons, but that was a bummer... I didn't have any too important emails, but I had given my madmail address to potentially important email senders and have no idea if they were sent.

:(

I feel like I'm making a lot more progress (although still very slow) now that I have decided to plan properly.  All my previous projects have failed, probably because I was too busy trying to make backgrounds when I'd barely thought about the actual puzzles.

This time round I'm not even going to think about artwork until I've planned the game inside out, apart from some very very brief sketches to work out where things are going to go.

Ask for a refund, uninstall that crap and use something else. Honestly.

Hehe, that's exactly what I did.

I went back online with another technician today, and he couldn't help... said he wanted to refer me to the research team who would call me back within 48 hrs and they would fix it... the other two techies had also come with a promise from his predecessor that he was the man to fix it, so I felt like they were just passing me around.

So in the nicest possible way I requested my money back and waved goodbye to Norton.
