General Discussion / Re: Geocities

I've dabbled with Geocities in the recent past but it's nothing worth keeping.  It was the first and only time I dabbled in CSS (which was either successful or unsuccessful depending on the size of your monitor).

Like Vince I also ran an X-Files webpage, on spree.com (anyone remember that?) and also an 'Add to a Story' site using stormpages... (with all this experience you'd think I would actually be able to make websites now, but I still can't); Freewebs hosts my lastest stale project.

I really liked TLJ... but it is incredibly conversation driven, which is something I'm not a fan of.  But I really got sucked into the story.

Is it a classic?  I think it could be described as a personal classic in some people's eyes, but from where I'm standing I don't think it's incredibly high on this genre's 'classicness scale'.  At least not yet.

On the other hand, don't turn into one of these reviewers that doesn't have a good word to say about anything.  Some people confuse cynical smarm with humourism.  They're not the same thing.

I know where you're coming from Tuom.  New posts in the sticky threads seem to pass under my radar... not really sure why that is.  Kind of ironic seeing that the reason they are there is to be more accessible and yet they're the first ones to be overlooked.

It's possible to write reviews about games you like and still be critical.  Come to think about it, the few times I've reviewed a game have been when I've enjoyed it, but I've never been afraid to say 'this puzzle was a bit sucky' or 'it was far to long/short' or the graphics could have been better. etc etc.

More often than not, if I don't enjoy a game then I won't complete it, and I feel cheeky reviewing games I haven't bothered to see through til the end.

I like Abstauber's entry best.

My first ever 'choose your own' book was a Mario Bros. one.
Then I progressed to the Goosebumps specials. ;-)

Do we have to use your spoiler tag format or could we make our own one using webpages?

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.  Feel free to create a character that suits the poem.  I'm a pretty average boring looking fella, haha.

What kind of tone are you after?  And what kind of length?
Because I wrote a poem 6 or 7 years ago that I was quite proud of called 'Bad Guts' about the effects of eating a dodgy sausage.  It's 52 lines long.  I'll PM it to you as its a bit long and might not be what yor looking for.

How about a model or sculpture contest.  The host sets some guidelines of his choice (say design a creature, or a 3d model of a room), and the contestants have to make this thing using any means from plasticine to toilet-roll tubes, and a lick of paint... whatever.

It might not be directly tied to AGS or games, but it will get people doing creative stuff with their hands and keep them away from the computer for a few minutes at least.

What does everyone think?

The line represtenting the gent's jacket pocket kind of carrys on from the line representing the end of his sleeve.  It ends up looking a bit funny.  Evil's paintover corrects this, though.

I never understood why it has become popular for gamers to hate Peter Molyneux...  Is it because Yahtzee does?
Coz, from where I'm sitting, the guy has been behind some pretty good games.. and dare I say fairly inovative for their respective times.  I know Fable didn't quite live up to everyone's overblown expectations, but it that's the reason for all the hate then I feel sorry for the guy.

I think there is a lot of innovative stuff out there at the moment.  Nintendo have got innovation coming out of their ears with first the DS and now the Wii and I think they've created an arena for some really interesting stuff that just wasn't possible before.

As ProgZ says, this might not necessarily translate to everybody as 'fun', but you can't deny there's a lot of originality coming out of Nintendo at the moment.

Hey Cat.
Not sure about everyone else, but I'm pretty sure I used to refer to it as the 'shooting range'.  I'm in UK if that's relevant.

Lets organise 'Sittens', an event where we all met up at some TV studio to watch the recording of a shite sitcom (they're all shite these days - My Family is the only half decent one going) and basically laugh off-cue and be total jackasses.  Last one to get chucked out of the studio is a rotten egg. :D

Not necessarily.
I watched Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle the other week and I thought it was absolute complete rubbish and I'm embarrassed for him. Yet thinking back, I actually did find myself laughing on cue, several times.

So why did I laugh more at this even though I thought it was less funny... I think it's not unreasonable to suppose that the fact that the show had audience laughter (it's half stand-up and half sketch show) might have had a subconcious effect.  I was responding more to the laughter than to the actual "jokes".

I didn't say I would only laugh if there's a laugh track. That would be ridiculous.  I'm still intelligent enough to make my own judgment about the 'funniness' of something, but my own laughter might not necessarily be a reflection of this. Instead it might just be a reaction to the canned laughter.

This of course is just my theory, but I would sincerely like to wager 50 bucks with you that if you showed 100 random people 30 minutes of comedy with canned laughter and showed another 100 people the same 30 minutes without, and then recorded how much each group laughed... The first 100 would win.

They might come away with pretty even averaged results if you asked them to mark on a sliding scale how funny they found it.  This would prove that the canned laughter has an effect on the viewer's laughter even if it doesn't necessarily change thei mind about the quality of the comedy.

I really loved the first one - didn't even make your shortlist :(
