Can you remember anything else about the tone, graphics, style, etc?
Was is cartoony and humourous or serious and dark?
Was it 2D or 3D (or something in between)?
Was it set in the present day (or what counted as present when you were a kid)?

I’m just catching up on the stories now and will send my votes in due course, if it’s okay.

Thanks for saving us from a complete drought, heltonjon, haha.

The winner is:
Heltonjon’s Training Game hehe. I’ll be in touch about choosing a topic for November.

Meanwhile, the thread for October’s Halloween MAGS “Unexpected Guest” is now open. Check it out.

Topic: Halloween with an unexpected guest
Set by:remz

The winner of this month’s MAGS contest was Heltonjon.

Halloween is coming up, but an unexpected guest shows up.
Would that be The Grim Reaper, coming for you?
Would it be your forgotten but inappropriate uncle, wanting to crash at your place?
Or perhaps a talking fly, hiding in your candy jar?

Use your creativity and originality! And most importantly, have fun participating (or playing)!

What is MAGS?
Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the guidelines set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules
Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualize your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days, and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

Remember that this is a challenge to see what you can do in a month, so any tinkering you do after that, including fixing minor glitches, is against the spirit of the competition. The exception to this is that you may go in and fix major, game-breaking bugs only during voting. We want you to have a game that voters can actually play and that runs on their machines.

So to reiterate, during the voting period fixing major, game-breaking bugs is okay, fixing minor glitches or making cosmetic changes is cheating.

Tips
Here are some ways to make sure you have a game to submit at the end of the month:
* Make a tiny game. Plan small, then cut it in half. Find shortcuts (e.g. if making walkcycles is time-consuming, make the characters static or have it in the first person).
* Plan to have your game playable and submittable with a week to spare. This way you have a week to fix bugs, add some flourishes and maybe even get someone to test it.
* Plan to submit it a day or so early. This way, if there are any technical issues with uploading, they can be sorted out in time.

Well, it’s your thread, bx.

I suggested Mark because he is someone who has published other people’s games in the recent past, and, political beliefs aside, he was once an important member of this forum. You could always contact the people he has worked with to see if they had any issues with his personal beliefs getting in the way of their professional relationship. If not, then there’s no reason Screen7 doesn’t deserve a mention here.

No takers? An extension is possible if anyone thinks they can finish something in the next couple of days, otherwise maybe best to start gearing up for the next month.

In fact, I will post October’s topic today, a little earlier, to try and encourage more takers. Get your Halloween hats on, is all I will say right now.
#807
You’ve already got three of the main ones which came to my mind.

Another possible option could be Screen 7. Mark left this community a couple of years ago but he’s still going. I don’t know if he’s still publishing other people’s projects, but it couldn’t hurt to get in touch with him.

I think Dan's point, which I agree with, is that most people who are against vaccination aren't against it because of some well-reasoned opinions based on their own nuanced political belief system. They're against vaccines because they only trust what the right-wing meme generators and shit-stirring YouTubers are telling them to believe.

Particularly in America. Yes, some anti-vaxxers might be able to point to [what they see as] genuine reasons based on their politics and might even be able to explain it somewhat articulately, but most of them just simply want to do the exact opposite of what Biden or anyone on the "left" is asking them to do, because WHOOOHOOO MURICA! That's not politics, that's stupidity.

#809
Such bullshit, even for Breitbart.

Quote
If I wanted to use reverse psychology to convince people not to get a life-saving vaccination, I would do exactly what Stern and the left are doing... I would bully and taunt and mock and ridicule you for not getting vaccinated, knowing the human response would be, Hey, fuck you, I'm never getting vaccinated!

In actual fact, the "leftists" have only ever been urging everyone to "please get vaccinated" over and over a-fucking-gain. Any ridiculing comes only after those people have argued against vaccination for the umpteenth time using memes and YouTube as proof.

I don't really care if they think they've been tricked. As long as they can finally admit the vaccine can save lives and get the fucking shot, so that my family can finally fucking meet my son.

Sad to see you’re out WHAM. Hope to see you next month.

Is anyone else working on something?
#811
We have a winner.

Congratulations to Remz, for your game Guy: By Hook or by Crook. Good job. I’ll contact you soon about deciding a topic for October’s contest.

Thanks to all participants and voters.

Who set this theme? Was it fernewelten based on July's contest?
Yes it was. Thanks for reminding me to mention it.
#814
Theme: Scales!
set by Fernewelten.
Deadline: September 30 (can be extended if needed)

  • Sometimes we need to tip the scales in our favour, sometimes we need to balance them out.
  • On the one hand, “Anything is grand if it's done on a large enough scale.” (Donna Tartt). On the other, “Nothing is so small that you cannot cut it in half” (Ulf Wolf)
  • Some scales make for painful insights, unless you deal with them creatively: “Self-delusion is pulling in your stomach when you step on the scales.” (Paul Sweeney).
  • Other scales are found on the fish market. Or on dragon hides.
  • Medieval knights protected themselves with a scale armour.
  • And scales are a means by which piano teachers terrorize their students in their piano practice.
  • Last but not least, freeclimbers scale the dizzy heights!

Scales are all around us. So come up with a way to make your adventure about some aspect of scale!

Sorry guys. I haven’t gone AWOL.

Thanks for the entries, everyone.  It looks like we have a good selection this month.
I’ll rig up the voting later today.

Congratulations, Slasher!

I'm trying to have an entry ready too for this MAGS. But time flies!

Good to hear, remz

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Just enjoy the process and try to get something playable on the table.

Talking about side-effects, I haven’t pooped since my jab.
#818
Interesting concept. Congratulations on your first (I think) release.
#819
Nice looking game. Congrats.

Thanks, Slasher. It was really just a mild temperature, though. I’ve had way worse fevers in the past for seemingly no apparent reason and lived to tell the tale. At least with this I knew that the reason for the fever was that the vaccine was doing its job and training my immune system to recognise the coronavirus.
