Hi jkohen,

do you remember what the guys at the boot have been talking about?

First step is
Spoiler
to find the map where the cave is marked. Search in the tent for it.

then you will be able

to enter the cave and find the (filled) bottle

after that you need to

use the „fluid“ somewhere to have the empty bottle.

but using it

for the oil is only possible, if you have another item.

My guess that we have left one try only was done, because each of the previous actions cost us a life point (to be seen in the bottom bar).
There was only one left.

Referring to the inventory on that last screen with one „lifepoint“ there still was oxygen (and a hose).
If we had lost the tank it couldn't be shown there (so oxygen in the bottle which we carry with us was present) - it might be a bug in the game, but why not try to use an item that is shown when there is no other idea :D

In any case I defend Crimson for his heroish "jumping into the lake".

… and SALUTE to WHAM for bringing this adventure to us.
Well done! 
Thank you so much for this nice experience!

Hope to see our hero again (maybe in his afterlife or when he got saved by someone or …)

Can we get some air that is still left in the tank from the inventory somehow?
If the mask is missing, maybe we can simply stick the hose to the nose to be able to breathe and calm down (and get out of there)?

use the chemical-liquid from downstairs (after using the stairs not the room behind door to the right). There's a second room you can enter at the bottom of the screen.

the monitors (where you found the black cd) give you some interesting sights (and might bring you new ideas about what can be done) and in the earlier room with the mice are cemicals (that can be used to “melt” a lock somewhere else)
