I think her torso should move a little more as it looks like her legs are not her own in a way.

Hi guys, here's a NPC that helps quite a lot in the second location of my game. Before I have the sprite made I really want to give him some eyes as he just looks too scary and a bit too undead here when in fact he's a helpful young boy that wishes in vain to be a hero lol.

I've tried myself but really don't know what to do as they look out of place when I try. Any suggestions and paintovers are welcome

This is just a very rough sketch btw for the sprite artist to get a feel for what he should look like.

I think you should add a few clouds. Personally I find the best way to create clouds is to start with a outline with a low opacity then work my way inward putting it up slowly and going over each spot. I've only had photoshop for about a week though so I'm not the best person to ask but I thought I'd give some advice as I believe you're just starting out to right?

Below are some examples of how I've progressed with creating clouds. In the first one you can tell how a solid colour isn't very aesthetically pleasing. Although these are more a cartoon style it might be of some help.

Ahhh I see, thanks anian I understand. I need to really go through the story I think as there's so much that happens maybe I need to simplify it slightly and this well help me pick the perfect name.

Malakey travels across the whole fantasy world in which he lives discovering many weird and wonderful places including an orphanage inside a giant lemon, the edge of the world (as you've never seen before lol), the mysterious Mapoco mountains, the tree house village and much more. I honestly feel that the locations alone set it out to be quite different and others have agreed after reading the story. Although you only have my word to go on until I have more of the game developed so I won't go on about it to much lol. I hope that my concept will feel original but warmly familiar in some ways.

Sorry anian I didn't really understand what you meant maybe you could explain a bit more to me?

Thanks for the suggestions guys, although I haven't seen one I'd use yet it's quite helpful thanks.

The thing that makes this game different I feel is the extensive history and in depth storyline. Also the game play and atmosphere will be different to a lot of fantasy games. Also many of the locations are unusual and don't copy others in different fantasy games or books. The game is also a good insight into the development of the character, confidence and journey that Malakey makes as he travels.

We're also going to revamp the artwork this summer with a much more detailed feel. Kind of like CMI but not the same.

Yeah I like the suggestions, thanks guys but I also feel starfall is to sci-fi and sounds slightly generic also. It's hard to think of original ideas lol.

Ascovel I thought of Astrum Gate also, but astrum is greek for star so it would be star gate lol which obviously wouldn't fit and is already in use.

We didn't really want to use star's to much as it sounds to sci-fi

lol thanks but it doesn't really stand out. I don't really want to use hero in the title as it's misleading to what the game is about I think. appreciate the input though

Critics' Lounge / Help With a Name For my Game
Mon 27/04/2009 00:58:37
I know it might sound stupid but I have been thinking for ages for a name for my adventure game and me nor anyone in the team can come up with something we all agree on. Now that it's going into production we could really do with a solid name.

I wondered if you guys could help maybe? Perhaps suggest something, I could fit nearly anything in loosely with the game if it sounds good enough lol.

The game is set in a fantasy world with hints of satire and some comedy. The main character Malakey is reluctantly pushed into the role of setting out on a crusade to become a hero so that he can prevent the corruption of the land. Sounds a bit cliche but I'd be giving the story away if I went into more detail now lol.

We're looking for a two word name preferably but it can be more or less. The only name we've liked so far is "The Night The Stars Fell" but it's to long and doesn't really have a ring to it. Other suggestions included "10% Hero" far to comedic, "Little Hero" to childish, "The Gate" doesn't feel like a fantasy name and "Astrum" doesn't really have a ring to it. We need something a little more epic lol.

Names like Golden Sun are the kind of thing we'd be looking for.

Thanks for your time I hope you can maybe help us or advise us in some way :D

can't wait for this, i hope an english translation can be made.

Ok thanks, sorry about that but I just wanted to make an actual thread as I don't think many people check the recruit a team thread.
#155
I'm currently looking into making a commercial game. I will have a demo up soon but I was wondering if anyone could help me with finding background artists? I'm willing to pay but I'm unsure where to ask?
#156
Mr Matti can't do it any more, anyone else?
#157
Ah yeah that's a good idea thanks red press. I'm learning scripting myself but I'm picking it up quite quickly so I like that idea. Yeah I already posted in that recruit a team thread but to no avail.
#158
Sounds fair. Have you got a portfolio or older work I could look at?
#159
Hi guys sorry if this is the wrong section I just thought I'd get more notice here, also the recruit a team thread is a little stale.

I'm in need of an additional background artist and wondered how much people would charge for backgrounds in the same style (with maybe more texture etc) as these in 1024 x 768.
I won't be able to pay a huge amount so wanted to know what kind of prices ranges there are as I know there's a lot of great artists here.
