If you are going to translate your game into a language that has accents, try to erase the accents. I do that when i'm translating my games into spanish. Adios!

Is that a reasonable thing to do? Most of my experience of languages with accents comes from school, where they'd have you executed if you missed them out, and insist that nobody could possibly understand what you mean without them. Granted, I'm sure that was hyperbole on their part, but (for example, in Spanish) is it still acceptable do leave the accents out?

I've created a custom font, and I plan to see that the game is translated into French. Since french involves characters not present in English (acute accents, etc), I've decided to make use of thepeculiar set of symbols in the top cluster of this font, since they'd otherwise never be used in this game.

Problem is, I have no idea how these things would be entered into the text in AGS. My character map doesn't have "smiley face" or "double exclamation mark".

Could anyone explain to me how these strange letters could be placed into a character's speech? Merci!

what can we expect by "non-linear graphics" ? Curvy graphics?  :-[

The curviest! In all the right places! (if you know what I mean)

Just thought I'd say, Nancy the Happy Whore and the Perfidious Petrol Station can now be played from beginning to end - as long as you do it absolutely correctly, don't mind a complete lack of walkcycles on non-main characters, and absence of sound.

Fortunately, the magic of unemployment gives me an awful lot of time for fixing these things, and I confidently predict that within two weeks, people will be able to have a test-drive of Nancy for me. As long as you're interested, of course!

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to make sure she's performing at her best.

Okay, having just gotten on to the Firefox-using machine, I can see what everyone means by "still green" and "shifted over to the right". Looks like I'd better get learning CSS!

Last time I made a site, I was using Netscape composer. Things have changed in thirteen years!

Two muffins are sitting in the oven.

The first says "Wow, it's hot in here."

The second replies "Aagh! A talking muffin!"

The newest IE versions (9, 10) are already pretty close to adhering to the current standards, so you're way better off if you build the page for Webkit/Gecko, i.e. Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Check out w3schools.com.

Seconded, Thirded, Fourth'd - Infinitied.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVERinfinity do design/layout work in IE.  It is shit.  Even the newest "standards" versions of IE are still shit.  The world would be a FAR better place if IE died and nobody used it ever again.  Do yourself a huge favor and switch to Chrome.  It's the best browser available right now.

It all depends which computer I'm on at a given moment. I've got Chrome on most of them, except for one. I've got computers running pretty much everything except Opera for testing it.

Same thing happens on opera, tons of green, and everything's offset to the right.

Is it still green on Opera? Hm, I thought I'd gotten that ironed out a few hours ago.

I managed a kind-of fix using other classes. It produced a bizarre situation where nothing stuck to the centre, but I think I'm getting the hang of this - slowly.

Right, I'll get back to making the rest of it work!

<==== SORT-OF FIXED ====>

Well, I figured I ought to start making a website for all of my delightful games, but it seems to have hit rather a snag that I can't quite seem to puzzle out. It wouldn't have fit in the AGS technical forum, or the critics lounge, so maybe someone can point me in the right direction here.

technotest.uphero.com

I'm mostly an IE user, and within IE it looks absolutely fine and dandy.

But then in Firefox and Chrome, everything in the background shows up green.

I have no idea where it's getting this colour scheme from. I've checked the "inspect element" tool on Chrome, and it says
Code: ags

td[bgcolor=rgb(65, 70, 87)] {
background-color: #005000;
}

so it apparently knows it's supposed to be showing blue/grey (65, 70, 87), but suddenly leaps to that green (#005000). I'm pulling my hair out with this, and there must be a simpler answer than "rewrite the entire page in CSS" - surely it's possible to change the colour in HTML to ensure everyone sees it the right way?

Many thanks for your help.

Before anything else, the physics of the cars should be polished up. Can't design tracks without that!

Much like other cartoon racing sorts of games, different handling characteristics of the vehicles for different characters (light, medium, heavy) would probably be a good idea. Speaking of which, I noticed that when turning left (in the test demo) the forward velocity barely slows, but turning right brings the thing to a halt.

It's a lot more straightforward (and probably, more appropriate I think) to have the same items/pickups for everyone. It means less work on creating them, and leads to a more unified "AGS" feel of the whole game - in my personal opinion.

The blue cup should be the trophy everyone's racing for.

Mario Kart has Star Cup, Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, etc. AGS Racer has the Blue Cup.

Blue-Baby-Cup, Blue Cup and Big Blue Cup?

Well, I'm sure I can make her smaller then. Everyone'll only be staring at the back of her head!

I've been experimenting with a parallaxing moutain-scape in the background - not a great deal of joy yet, I'm wondering if I make its speed of movement at the edges slower than the middle it'd look more realistic perhaps...better do some more research with Mario Kart...

now I want to draw some tracks :D

So would it be possible to have another dimension in the 3d effects, like a tunnel and a way over the tunnel for an 8-track?
Also ice on the road for slippery driving?

I've been dragging the courses from Mario Kart into it for an experiment - haven't been able to find a full-size image for the tracks, but the ones that are 1024x1024 representations are working alright so far.

If we're going to standardise a character size, let's make them bigger than Mr Elephant from Wacky Wheels. It means I can give more details and definition to the Nancymobile.

I'm amazed, and 100% on board! We'll have to make it do multiplayer as well!

A few years ago, I was experimenting with using the AGS3D plugin to make something like the 3d-cuboid with a texture on top for things to move around on top of. It was a little unstable, is what I remember, but that's probably just all the other things I was trying to make it do.

I found my brother frantically attempting to download from the link that appeared on Abandonia recently, for the cancelled Warcraft adventure game (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/30343/.html). To his frustration, he was unable to get it to work - first his computer complained that it was a 32 bit game, and then the setup refused to work. He was then confused as to why the game, when it worked, seemed to simply be the demo of Warcraft II.

Spoiler
When I looked at the date on the website however, it turns out this was an entry from the first of the month. Oh well!

Has anyone on here actually played the beta that was leaked? I think it's probably the holy grail of abandonware in our household!

You know where to find the right one of these for any situation, don't you?

I'm fairly tempted, what with trying to be more sociable and everything lately. Although, it would involve going outdoors and being exposed to sunlight...decisions decisions...

As one of the ones interview for RPS, I have nothing but positive energy for it. I'll get around to radiating it.

I'm putting a lot of oomph into it this weekend - especially drawing-wise.

I think I'm improving!

...I've never actually played King's Quest. Ever. I've Policed, and I've Spaced, but never Kinged, and I'm finally able to admit it!

Also because Steam have the King's Quest series at half price today. So, has anyone else missed out on classic, seemingly obligatory parts of adventure gaming?
