Critics' Lounge / New 'By the Sword' logo
Tue 17/02/2004 13:57:25
Okay, so I was told that my game's current logo looks rather plain and boring. So how does the logo in the bottom page rub you?

http://harbinger.2ya.com/

At first, it was just plain colors with a slightly darker colored border, green and sea green. then I added some patterns and stuff inside. How does it look? What can I do to improve/fix it? And don't just reply with "Looks great Terran! :P" I need constructive criticism, people! :)

Thanks

Yes, I live in the U.S. and we're horrendously uptight. Case in point: the Superbowl Halftime Show. Holy crap, any kids who happened to be watching the Superbowl Halftime Show (since it sucked anyway) saw a boob! Good god no, this is corrupting our children!

http://www.marksfriggin.com/news04/2-2.htm#tue

Howard Stern makes a damn good point on this issue. Europeans aren't this uptight. And they're not in any state of anarchy or "moral dillema" as George W. Bush might say. He also mentions the Levitra (Next-Gen Viagra) commercial and how it would be ten times harder to explain that to children instead of a tit.

I might be opening up a can of worms (and I swear I couldn't find a thread on this in this forum), but what do you guys think of this whole stupid issue?

I for one think it's ridiculous and really not a big deal at all.

General Discussion / This ever happen to you?
Fri 23/01/2004 19:12:38
Has anyone ever seen a picture of a person online and thought, "Hey, is that...? Nah...it can't be... Can it?"

I was browsing through the 3D.sk nude reference photos (I'm making Poser photo-realistic textures, you perverts) and  came across one that, I swear to God, looks EXACTLY like a girl I used to work with. She even had the same name! (Monica, the newer model.) Then I took a look at some of the facial close-ups and realized that it wasn't her. The jawline was too pronounced to be her, or something like that.

But I'm sure that's happened to somebody out there, not just me. I know I've had moments where I swore a picture of a person looked like someone I know or once knew. :p

I bought a game called "Conspiracies" the other day after reading the back. Get this...

QuoteMURDER
Enter the world of Nick Delios, a betrayed, jilted and down on his luck private detective who, after a spree of drinking and gambling, needs cash and needs it quick. When a police investigator and old friend offers him money to unofficially help investigate the murder of a small time crook, Nick agrees, not imagining the bizarre twists and turns lying just ahead.

MYSTERY
As this seemingly "simple" case thrusts Nick into a complex mustery of multiple conspriacies, you will soon discover tht nothing is what it seems and, indeed, mayb lead beyond the very bounds of our planet!

ADVENTURE
A first-person 3D adventure, Conspiracies features a mid-21st century setting, non-linear gameplay, and challenging puzzles all wrapped in a tantalizing tale of murder and mystery! In your search for answers you will explore loads of locations and interact with dozens of intriguing characters.

Hmm... sound familiar? Well, replace "Nick Delios" with "Tex Murphy" and you've basically got any one of the three Tex Murphy games made between 1994 and 1998 (Under A Killing Moon, The Pandora Directive, Overseer). It's extremely similar, right down to traveling off-world (UAKM went to the moon), a down-on-his-luck jilted detective with a drinking problem and in need of cash, the mid-21st century setting, nonlinearity (TPD was multi-threaded and had 3 endings), and the sci-fi look of the screenshots on the back of the box.

Now, another fledgling (?) company, Got Game Entertainment, has apparently been "inspired" to make a similar game. Since it needs 3 GB minimum of my hard drive space, I haven't played it yet and am currently trying to free up some space, and therefore I don't know how similar it is to any of the Tex Murphy games. But, it's almost an exact clone...right down to the FMV cutscenes and use of live actors.

Has anyone else played this? I own it but I'm not able to play it yet. What do you think?

http://www.gamewinners.com/DOSWIN/cheats_l.html

...but take a look. Both Larry Vales games are in there. I consider GameWinners one of the best sources of gaming cheats out there, being the most extensive and most detailed I have ever seen. So seeing this was quite a shock to me. I thought they had only commercial games there.

Space Quest: The Lost Chapter is also in there, too.

Frequent visitors of #ags might have noticed that I've been absent from the channel for the past week or two. Basically, a certain op or ops have made the channel inhospitable for several people, but mostly me. I'm willing to bet that whenever CJ is present in the channel, said op(s) is/are absent from the channel. Other ops just sit there, idling most of the day, and are useless 3/4 of the time they're "present". People are discouraged from arguing with ops, for they are gods!!!

Basically, I've had it, and I really don't think I'm going back there anytime soon. Hey, at least this will give me more time to work on my game.

(Point of this post: explanation of my absence from the channel, if anybody gives a shit)

Yes, that's right people! I've been pushed too far this time!

I'm sure you've gotten those emails from 20 or so "friends" (i.e. people who only seem to contact you to send you crap) that say that you can get free money from Microsoft, you can get free clothes, that AOL is charging for Instant Messages (HAH!), you have to pray for some ill person that got better 5 or so years ago, you can get your name in the World Records for biggest chain mail, that all your wishes will come TRUE if you send this email to 20 other people! If you don't, "something BAD will happen to you"!!!

Ever gotten those? Are you sick of it? Want a way to combat it?

I say we fight fire with fire. What do I suggest?

I suggest we each send an email to every single person we know--

Wait! Wait! I'm not suggesting JUST another chain letter. THIS is the chain letter to end all chain letters! If we each send about 20 people this email, ALL email chain lettering just very well might stop. I mean, if a person can believe something as stupid as "Bill Gates is sharing his fortune!" then people should believe that they've been duped all these years.

If you want to partake in this, fine. If not, that's fine too. I am. You should too. Enlighten and educate, I say.

SUBJECT: Fwd: This is not your usual chain letter! Please read on...

Hey you guys, I know what you're thinking. Just another chain letter, right? What is it this time? Free money from MIcrosoft? Am I praying for some guy who probably already got better 10 years ago?

No.

Quite simply, I am spreading the word to all of you that 99% of the chain letters you get in your email inbox are false and just plain stupid. Do you want to educate the masses?

VISIT THIS LINK: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blhoax.htm

You will see which email chain letters are true and which are FALSE and HOAXES! Send this to all of your friends and never more will we be victim to email hoaxes.

Knowledge is power.

Thanks,
XXXXX

Maybe it's a long shot, but I think it might work. Who knows? I mean, crazier things have happened. :P

I coined a phrase! I coined a phrase! Yay!

Yak and I were having a conversation on #ags earlier tonight and we got to talking about the Rat Pack (50's), the Brat Pack (80's), and current day actors that seemed to form their own version of the Brat Pack. By definition, these are actors that are in "teen movies" very often and star with each other randomly, in groups, like the Brat Pack did.

I called it the "Frat Pack". Who would you include?

In the Brat Pack, I came up with Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy (?), Rob Lowe, and Ally Sheedy.

In the Frat Pack, so far I have Julia Stiles, Ashton Kutcher, Sean William Scott, Jason Biggs, Chris Klein (?), Mena Suvari, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Rachael Leigh Cook.

Anyone care to add/delete/comment?

If you don't remember what Desktop Roger was, it was a program I made that was meant to replace Roger when he wasn't in the IRC chatroom, and it was meant to be run on your computer as a standalone EXE. He basically could tell other users messages almost the same way IRC Roger can, and can use the Internet to Google, Define, etc. Basically you treated DeskRog like IRCRog in that you type in commands in a speech balloon as if speaking to him, and he would talk back in the same way.

I am now working on a more general version of DeskRog which isn't so AGS oriented and will be understood by non-AGSers. So far I have the following capabilities:

eBay [search], Google, Google ("I'm Feeling Lucky"), Yahoo!, Altavista, HotBot, Lyrics [search], IMDb [search], Half.com [search], Download.com [search], Amazon [search], Define, and Urban Define.

I am also going to add various things like 8-Ball, Random Number, and Roll Die/Dice.

I was wondering if anybody out there could give me ideas on what else to add, whether it be Internet related queries or other neat useful tools.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

CJ: Is this on your list? It would be great if one could select more than one sprite file at a time and import them all in order all at once. This would be VERY useful for character animations, etc.

What do you guys think of a "TV" series, made in AGS? Like a regular TV show that has a new episode every week, regular seasons, summer in re-runs, etc. Except this would all be made in AGS and released as EXE's.

What do you think? Would anybody be interested?

After By the Sword was done I was thinking of making it into a bi-weekly series. I had planned out the first three seasons years ago but deleted it because I never thought I could ever find a way to do it. I just wanted to run this idea by you all to see if (1) it was even original, and (2) anyone was interested. :)
#112
Does anybody know how to do a Star Trek-style warp speed animation, with the stars streaking past as lines, going from center outward smoothly? If anyone does, I'd be much obliged and you'd help me greatly in my game, By the Sword. :)
#113
Upon release of my new By the Sword demo, I got two reports of the game not even starting, perhaps due to a memory problem. I have found that no matter what size I set the resource chunks at, the EXE file is still 57.5 MB large. I looked at the help file and apparently certain things must still be stored in the main EXE file. Is it possible to relocate these resources into separate files, like sprites? I have a lot of high-resolution sprites and that might be what is causing such a large EXE file.

Also, would you have any idea as to whether a 57-MB EXE file run on a 733MHz computer with 64MB of RAM would cause any problems?

Thanks :)

Say you have an interaction "Use inventory on this inventory item" in AGS. If you add a Conditional to test for one certain item, and if another item was used, will the unhandled_event function still run?

General Discussion / Hey! Who's song is this?
Tue 02/09/2003 15:57:22
...And can I use it, if it's not being used?

http://www.harbinger-software.com/files/song_music1.mp3

Somebody posted this on the forums awhile back and I just found it on my hard drive. It was posted as "music1.mp3", which is pretty generic. It might have been Trapezoid or some other musically gifted AGSer.

Does anyone know who made it, or is it you?

I did some thinking just now, and I thought it would be best if I stayed off the forums for awhile, until I finish up my demo for By the Sword. Work on it has been on and off repeatedly lately, and I think it's because I spend too much time checking the forums. I will still be on IRC once in awhile, but I'm going to devote more time to working on my game. Maybe I'll be able to meet the deadline this time (2004). :P

But seriously, this isn't goodbye. It's see ya later, Gone Fishin' (or Finishin' is more like it), hasta luego, ate logo (until later in Portuguese). I was watching a movie...one of those movies that, afterwards, makes you think long and hard about your own life. Not in a sad, dreary way, but in a "what can I do better?" kind of way, and "What have I accomplished lately?".

So when I return to the forums, you had better believe it'll be with a fully playable demo of my game. ;D

Until then...keep on truckin'.
* terranRICH gives the thumbs-up.

Apparently it doesn't work right. This is what I get for one of the frames. They all look similar to the one below:

What could be the problem? I tried saving frames twice in Jasc Animation Shop as a FLC file. It still did the above.

And why can't you implement an "import more than one file at the same time" command, Pumaman? Hmmm? ;)

General Discussion / Damn Pop-ups
Fri 22/08/2003 15:57:55
The definition of irony? These damn pop-up windows...all of which advertise for Pop-Up Removal Software! GAH!

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting these stupid message-box style pop up windows even when not browsing the web? I've heard it was a Windows-related flaw or something. First, my friend had it. I thought it had something to do with her cable internet service provider. Then I started getting them, and I had to get a program to block them, and it works.

Every single one of the pop-up software things that advertise using pop-ups cost as much as $30. I say just go to www.download.com and find the higher-rated freeware pop-up removal programs. I have one called "Stop-the-Pop-Up", if anyone needs one. It's available on download.com
#119
... Isn't that what the Classifieds topic is for? So far we have: (1) Plot help, (2) Also some plot help, (3) I need an artist to help me, (4) Good artist needed, (5) creators wanted!, (6) 2D Artist needed for project. SIX topics that really didn't need to be started. A lot of bandwidth could've been saved.

Now it's ruined. RUINED! You killed it! Nooo!!

Okay, three LucasArts GUI questions in a row is a sign.

Please post ALL LucasArts questions here, so that the threads will be easier to see and pick out. We will still continue to look at all remaining LucasArts GUI help threads, however. But after those, please post all questions here.

Thanks. :)

{September 20th, 2005 Super Edit: The download for the 2.7 version is at http://www.lumpcity.co.uk/~skimbleshanks/templates/MI2v2.7.zip with special thanks to Lazarus}

[Early 2005 Edit]Most GUI questions posted here will be in reference to Proskritos' GUI's which can be downloaded from here: http://www.freewebs.com/skimbleshanks/templatesandmodules.htm
As of July 2005, we suggest using an older version of AGS to go with these templates and GUIs, as they were compiled with an older version of AGS. We suggest 2.62
