Here's what I do:

Draw each walk-behind in high-color but try to stay as close to the primary Windows colors as possible. Next, convert to 16-color trying to match to closest color or even trty to match the Windows palette. Then, try to organize things a bit by using up the first colors instead of jumping around, like it will quite possibly end up doing.

For example, if you draw three regions, one in blue, one if purple, one in green, they might end up being slots 4,10, and 2. Try to change it so that only slots 1, 2, and 3 are used. It keeps things organized.

Then, save it as a .BMP file and import it into AGS. :)

General Discussion / Re:Morals anyone?
Wed 14/05/2003 06:24:36
Okay, this topic has been done before, many times, but for old time's sake, here goes.

I've said this so many time in so many forms. Faith is good because it gives a person hope, strength, etc., etc. Religion can go either way. In my own personal experiences, the Christian religion is hypcritical (I'll give reasons below) at times. But, on the OTHER hand, there is some good in organized religion. Some people find comfort in it, and there is nothing wrong with it. It's just that some of us pay attention only to the extreme fundamentalists that picket outside schools protesting the entry of a gay student. That's just sick, stupid, and pathetic.

However, there are level-headed fundamentalists, and that's great. You gotta understand that the extremists give the rest of you nice people a bad name! :)

Now, as for hypocrisy (as well as just plain idiocy) in my [former] religion, here goes:

Masturbation is a sin. If you believe this, you're an idiot. Plain and simple.
Premarital sex is a sin. Some people might not want to have sex before marriage. For some it's relgious. For others, it's a personal choice. Letting religion define your personal life shouldn't happen. If you don't want to do something, do it because YOU say it's wrong, not because others say it's wrong. I am a firm believer is not letting others define your own morals for you.

I'm really too tired to think of any more. Sorry for this half-assed argument. :)

Here comes version 0.5! After this,  I'm adding in a TVGuide function as well as other things like maybe translate, weather, news, random famous quote, etc.

For now, go to teh main site for versions 0.5a and 0.5b.

New in v0.5:
Different replies for each bot
Hidden...er...cheats ;)
Added Image search through google, just use "Image search words"
I just basically fixed the responses and any typos in the code like the problem with "go quotes"

Test it out! NOW!

For By the Sword I have one room that has a random billboard that changes everytime you [re-]enter it. I have plenty of ideas (well, 2, actually for now), but I need more! This helps both of us,  because (1) I need names to fill up my miniscule ending scrolling credits movie, and (2) you get mentioned!

So far I have:
Spam & Wax Hit the Road With Their Heads - Now in 6-D!!!
Dickins' Cider: Your Girlfriend Will LOVE a Dickins Cider! (lol)
Vote Dick Stulittle for Planetary Advisory Committee!
And some I might ask www.dribbleglass.com if I could borrow (http://tinyurl.com/bpp3)

Any other ideas? :)

Well, it seems as though my DisplayThought problem is worse than I thought. The only way I could feasibly integrate your new function into my game is to keep Sierra style (the default in my game) while thinking, instead using a different thinking animation. My original custom function had it switch to LEC style (with outlined text above the head), display speech, then back to Sierra style.

What I was thinking instead, was to add an additional parameter that sets the style of speech for thoughts. Say 0 for default, 1 for Sierra, 2 for LEC, 3 for QFG4, etc. This way, if a game (like mine) is normally in Sierra style for talking, but I want LEC style for thoughts, I could set this additional parameter to 2.

Would this work?

Heh, I love the chain letters. This female friend of mine always sends me those...but never actualyl talks to me...  :-\

Hmm, well it connects through FTP to my web site and downloads a very small file from there. Maybe you have to have Administrator priveleges to use Desktop Roger? I'm not sure about LAN's.

woohoo! ALl right, Quik! I've been a Trekker/Trekkie/whatever since I was 8 or 9 years old (12 years ago), and it all started with The Next Generation. I thought Nemesis was pretty good, not as good as First Contact though. i'm more of a TNG Trekker, so that movie was the best IMHO. If you want to watch Trek movies, try First Contact.

netmonkey: ALL the newer stuff? Including Enterprise? I think they're doing pretty damn good for a prequel show...except for the fact that they f-ed up the timeline in that their first contact with Klingons was supposed to have gone terribly wrong...and it wasn't so bad. And everybody had assumed that Starfleet was formed at the same time as the Federation, but apparently Starfleet was founded sometime between 2140 and 2150 while the Federation is founded in 2161. I think they're doing an okay job at making a prequel series.

Oh...and I bet I could whip your ass in Trek knowledge! ;)

what is Desktop Roger???

This is a good idea for an introduction to my documentation for Desktop Roger...

Well, if you've ever been to the #ags IRC chatroom, Roger and BlueCup are two bots there. Roger at one point was constantly absent, so I decided to make a desktop version of him, modeled after the AGS default character sprites. BlueCup is modeled after Helm's drawings of her.

uhhh...ok...

I thought I had updated ths thread, but apparently not. I already made version 0.4 with v0.5 coming shortly.

DOWNLOAD IT NOW!!!!

v0.4 changes: BlueCup is here! Also, if you type in "go" then almost any AGSer's screen name or IRC nick, then you will be taken to his/her home page. This only works for most of the elder AGSers (and myself, of course) for now. To get BlueCup, type in "switch" or "BlueCup". For Rog again, type "switch" or "Roger". :)

Dammit CJ! Now I'm going to have to change the name of my custom function, also called DisplayThought! :P All kidding aside, v2.55 ß4 looks awesome! Thanks! :)

I was lying in bed last night after having an early nap and wasn't tired. So I decided to try having anohter out-of-body experience. I relaxed, took slow and steady breaths, and within 10-15 minutes i found myself in a deep sleep-like state of mind. From the exitement of the possibilities of it all, my heart was beating fast, so I tried a technique I had read in that book I bought awhile ago (the one that I used to try astral project/out-of-body experiences last time) and slowed down my heartbeat.

I did this by imaging my heatbeat in my mind and changing my imagination of it, which in turn actually slowed down my normal heart beat. The book's advice actually worked. Then, in a fit of curiousity, I tried something I'd always wondered about.

I stopped my own heart beat.

And it worked. My heart seriously stopped beating for a good 20 seconds, before it suddenly started beating again, this time 4-5 times faster than normal to compensate. The sensation was very weird and different. My hands and arms, then my torso and legs started to tingle and I felt myself becoming very heavy. Then, that's when my heart started kicking in on its own again.

I did this 2 more times before I decided it was time for me to actually start trying an out-of-body experience.

So I relaxed myself again, and this time tried my best to keep my heartbeat at a normal rate. Then, I felt myself go into the sleep paralysis again. For the next half an hour to an hour I tried to make myself move out of my body. All I managed to do was move my hands up and through the bed sheets. At one point I think I may have even sat up in bed. After it all, I had the feeling, and knew that I hadn't physically moved one bit, because my body felt stiff and rigid.

I just fell asleep after that until an hour ago.

This new knowledge fascinates me...the knowledge that I have the power to control bodily fuunctions that I had once considered involuntary-only. I know it's not really healthy to stop my heartbeat three times in one night. But I thought it was pretty damn cool that I was able to.  :o

I, too, have constant problems with DRE's especially on GTA:VC. However, i've always heard that standing it up on its side makes it easier for the fan to vent hot air and thus cool off the proceessor. Meh.

I bought a Disk Doctor (a buffer to clean the DVDs/CDs), but it still did it, albeit less often. Seeing as how I can spare a month and a half away from it (I've spent longer than that lately not playing the damn thing), I might as well give Tech Support a call and ask them to take their piece of shit to fix it for free.

Idiots. All of 'em. Every single last big company. All idiots.

Some phrases my friend and I use a lot...

"Whaaaaat?? That sounds gaaay!!" (original)
"Hey now!" (from Howard Stern)
"Watch me now..." (a friend of ours, Messias,  used to say that)
"I'm just tellin' ya!" (from a local radio station, a sound bite they used to play)

:P

Also...

"What'd you DO?" (from "Tommy Boy")
"Aww, man, the line's busted!" (from Sprite commercial in late 90's)
"The building is going down!" (original)

remixor: Sorry. I tend to misquote or misplace quotes. :P No insult intended.

Due to the incredibly loud (and horny) response to my initial renderings of BlueCup, I'm going to include her in Desktop Roger for v0.4 :)

That's very strange. I checked the files online and they match up with what I have on my hard drive, which have the DLL file, uncorrupted and unscathed. Maybe you should trty it again? Version A has a transparent background, which might look better. BTW, I got your message! :)

I'm so excited that something I made actually works. LGM brought up some interesting ideas.

- have Roger keep a log of all incoming messages in case you couldn't read it all in the time given by ROger. I know he has that time limit thing based on the length of his messages. it's the only way...

- Keep a list of registered users. That I already do...but Roger should check that list when sending a message and reject the sending of it if the username given does not exist in the list. This would prevent spamming the message queue with junk messages.

I am still planning on integrating BlueCup and her actions/features/commands into Desktop Roger. I am going to do a few test renders of different concept models for BlueCup along with Helm's original drawings of her, to see if they look OK. I'm going to ask you guys to judge them and tell me what you think....or actually...that's what the C&C forum is for.... :P
