Those wacky Canadians.

* TerranRich pictures rodekill shading his eyes from a bright light above, yelling "No! Don't let them take me, eh!"

:P

Another example of a "Finding the Truth" plot would be, say, finding yourself victim (or survivor) of something, then wanting to just find out what happened/why it happened, etc. Like a conspiracy or an attack.

Another plot could be something low, like just "Getting Revenge". A spin on that would be "Getting Revenge", but then finding something out that makes you seriously re-think your actions.

Yet another plot would be "Pursue the Love Interest" or some general kind of "Chase" plot. You chase around another character for some reason or another.

* TerranRich shrugs.

Cerulean: I have an idea. use the fact that the player will keep persisting to pursue the woman to your advantage. Maybe some action you would expecct the player to take while trying to pursue her, instead causes somethign else to happen, ,something crucial to the continuation of gameplay. I dunno, just as idea. This way the player indirectly causes the game to continue by doing what he thinks he should do.

Garage/Rabbit: The closest example I can think of is Lara Croft, but that's more like "falling in lust."

In my game, there are basically two paths you can take. If you rescue a girl from a prison, she follows you through a little bit of the game, where you two talk and something sparks between you. if you don't (or aren't able to...i won't say more), then you don't meet her until the end where she accuses you of a crime...therefore nothing sparks.

However, I think the sequel will now have a romantic nonlinear plot, thanks to you guys! There's inspiration around every corner! ;D

Well I think that's plenty. :) Thanks everybody! I will send out emails when the game is finished. Just make sure either your email is visible in your profile, or in your post above.

I'm seriously debating whether to release the first Chapter as a demo, but even that will be too huge to upload (and for others to download). Maybe just more screenshots! ;D

Heh, it's okay, Melia, it's interesting to hear. It's also been postulated that humans have the latent ability to "see" from parts of their body other than the eyes, and I guess eyelids could count.

The being split in two part would be ehtereal projection, a.k.a. an out-of-body experience. It's very interesting that you've experienced it.

Heh, in case anybody is confused, let me explain a few things:

The two types of "projection" that I mentioned above simply meant out-of-body experiences. Astral is visited other realms of existence, different worlds. Ehtereal is visiting other places in this world, and in the present time. Some people have actually found out things thru ethereal projection that they could not have ordinarily known, like the inside of a house or what somebnody was doing at the time of projeection.

Sleep paralysis is when you are either drifting off to sleep or just waking up. Basically, most people's bodies produce a chemical or something that paralyzes them during REM sleep (dreaming) so they can't move around and hurt themselves. It is thought that a mishap somehow (notice there's no real reason for the mishap?) causes the effect to occur while out of REM sleep, even during consciousness. This results in paralysis, along with a buzzing sound and/or feeling, a sense of another presence close by, and more than a little fear.

According to the book I'm reading, sleep paralysis (although not referenced by name) might actually be the body trying to start an out-of-body experience during consciousness. Also, it postulates that dreams are astral projections during sleep. One can theoretically have a waking dream...an astral projection while the body is asleep, but the mind is awake. This semi-conscious state is when OOB experiencecs usually occur, like hypnosis.

I'll post more about this later on if anyone's interested. :)

Lately I've experience a surge of interest in all things paranormal: from ESP and clairvoyance to past lives and astral & ethereal projection. In the latter subject, I am reading a book that give pointers and suggestions on how to astral/ethereal project, as well as several case studies and stories.

While reading the book earlier today, I saw that most of the times, just before projecting, the person would feel a vibration. This sounded similar to my experiences of sleep paralysis, where (upon drifting off to sleep) I would randomly and suddenly become paralyzed, feeling a vibration throughout my body and the inability to move.

So I started to become curious. What if my sleep paralysis was really me starting to project ethereally? What if I was starting to project, but became afraid (which I had felt before) and therefore halted the process, not knowing what was happening?

With this thought,  I decided to give it a shot. In the midafternoon, when no one was home, I sat on my oh-so-comfortable living room couch and closed my eyes. I started to relax every part of my body. In time, I started to "fall," as I call it. It's not the sense of falling asleep,  it's the sense of falling into some other state of mind. I think I might have become semi-conscious.

Then, the vibrations began. I started to feel the sleep paralysis take a hold of me. Instead of jerking myself out of it like I had done countless times before, I let it go for the first time ever. The vibrations (which felt like convulsions) persisted, and I was still paralyzed, but I started to see things, as if my eyes were half-open. There were two ways that I could tell they were not, however: (1) I could feel my eyes fully closed and even attempted to close them, but found that they were already closed, and (2) the images I were seeing were things that were not in the room I was in.

To explain in more detail, I will say that I saw what appeared to be pages of a book, and some other items I cannot remember in detail. Suffice it to say, those items were nowhere to be seen or found within sight. The only book I had was the Astral Projection book, which was to my side...and I had been facing forward, with my head resting back.

I don't know if I was starting to project, but something made me want (or need) to return to my physical body. But instead of gradually easing myself back into it, I sorta jerked back into the physical body and saw that I was still slightly shaking. Once the shaking stopped and I regained enough strength to move, that's when the phone rang.

Did I sense that the phone would ring and therefore stopped myself from going any further with the experiment? I think so.

Tomorrow I still have plenty of free time and plan to try this out again. I'm hoping I will actually project even more this time.

Also, I read the book more after this experiment because I was wondering what I needed to do exactly, in order to experience an astral projection. Apparently, I was supposed to wait for about 5 minutes while the vibrations were occuring, then let the vibrations pulsate through me until it subsided.

There's another bug. Apparently, when moving the mouse around the room background image, going upward, the Y-coordinate stops at 1. Can I not access coord 0? I need it to set walk-behind baselines at 0 so they will be walk-behindable at all points.

Thanks again. :)

Great. I was gonna call one of the places in my game "H.E.C." as a parody, but now it'd be pointless. Dammit. :P Guess I'll call it something else now...

* TerranRich considers a parody of "LucasArts"...but fails miserably.

Welcome, jason, hope you enjoy using AGS. Be forewarned, though: it is updated almost every other week. It went from version 2.52 to 2.55 in half a year, with many major updates and overhauls. :)

Again, have fun and enjoy!! ;D

General Discussion / Re:_THE_ list

So you'd do all of them, but you just divided the list in half.

Somehow I get the feeling that,  as time goes on, the list will grow and grow exponentially. :D heh

I'm surprised this bug hasn't yet been reported. if it has,  it still exists and was never fixed. When working on a new room and loading a background image in high-res, I have to save the room, load a new one, then load the previous one if I want to draw walk-behinds in high-res. Otherwise, it draws it in low-res.

Thanks.

Thanks again, guys. ;D

Anybody who says they're in will receive an email whenever the game is done. Make sure your email is in your profile. :)

NOTE: Anybody who replies in this thread with an affirmation that they wish to be a beta tester, will get an email, and then a free copy of BtS on CD when it comes. I expect the release date to be sometime this summer or fall.
#3095
Heh, thanks guys, tho it's a bit late for me to reply.

The running will be fixed. In fact, it already has been fixed. The intro will be re-done when the entire game is finished,  as I am using better methods of modeling and stuff to make things look better and more realistic.

Anyone who wants to Beta can get a free copy of the game on CD-ROM (no shipping either), but the catch: fill out a survey, AND give a detailed description of what you thought was good, bad, needed work, was perfect/fine, etc. Then, you'll be added to the ending credits of the game! :D

i'm going for realism with this game. If you noticed, the intro is mostly still shots where closeups are concerned. This will not be the case with later cutscenes and the re-made intro. You'll see. ;) It will ROCK!!

At the very least, Chris, could you implement a GetCharacterScale(int charid); function until you find a way to implement full scale/speed synchronization. Is that possible? This way we could do it ourselves until then using script by checking the scale size and setting the speed accordingly.

//EDIT//
Whoops, forgot that speed can't be changed while walking. Is there a way around that? Is that where the problem in the implementation lies? :)

You want a record? I got one.

My game, By the Sword, might quite possibly be the largest AGS game ever made, in terms of megabytes. I'm expecting it to fill up a CD-R, with music and extras.

So take that. I'm not bragging or anything, I actually think it's a joke that it'll be that large. :P

//EDIT//
WTF! I can't write CD-R? R R R R R!!! ARGH!!!

This thread might have existed at one point (as allegedly, all threads have existed at one point or another), but I'm starting it anyway.

What little-known text adventures have you played that you would highly recommend to others? I'm not talking about the famous ones, like Hitchhiker's Guide..., the Zork series, Adventure, et. al.

One that I would suggest: Shades of Grey, where you play a...wait, that would ruin the game. Search for it, and play it. (HERE)

QuoteAn imaginative psychodrama of self-confrontation and moral dilemma, by way of Haiti, Sherwood Forest, and an American Civil War battlefield. One of the most intriguing storylines I've seen in any game. You wander the city streets, or possibly the castle grounds, with a sense of temporal dislocation and confused memories of vampires, until a friendly fortune-teller helps you put your head back together through a series of visions about your past and what it means to you. Written by seven strangers, the game is divided into self-contained segments of highly variable style, subject matter, and quality. This is at once the game's greatest strength and its greatest weakness. Just about everything you hate in games can be found here - mazes, time limits, obscure "guess-the-word" puzzles - but the flawed parts fit into the frame-tale so well, the effect is dazzling. Given a better parser and the removal of some of the more annoying puzzles, this one would easily rate five stars.

I highly suggest to everyone to download this and try it out. it's a compelling game with a few twists and a great story. if you can get used to the annoying parser that affeects many IF games, then download this game!

Any others?

Hey, I feel sorry for you, in a way.  I actually never lost someone that soon.  I agree with some others here, it is a proven fact that sex is the worst KILLER of relationships.

On another note, there is a fairly old song.  It goes something like, "When I fall in love, it will be forever, or I'll never fall in love.  When I feel that you feel that way too, that's when I'll fall in love."  The best answer is to be a good friend, and to make it known that you are romantically interested.

I feel there are two types of "daters."  Some date to get sex, and nothing else.  Others are looking for a long term relationship.  Heck, some people have "dated" for a decade or longer.  Be the latter, not the former.

Well, we had been friends for years, and only now have I made it been known that I was romantically interested. She reciprocated, and we started going out. Sex wasn't the cause of the break-up. The sex was great for both of us, it just wasn't mean to be because of all the fighting.
