Messages - The Bedminster Incident

#21
Uh, that's not what I meant though. What I was trying to point out is that if you try to start a new game (in the "Welcome to AGS!" dialog box) after trying to import an old game and receiving said error message, you won't be able to select a template anymore, because they're not there (screen shot: http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~pfeiffef/notemp.png). This persists until you restart AGS.

Just one bug I think I've found--I downloaded the BASS Template from http://www.americangirlscouts.org/agsresources/Templates.html, which was created with an old version of AGS (i.e. before 2.7, don't know which, though); hence it's demo game can't be imported properly (it does the backup and everything, but when trying to actually load it it comes up with the genuine AGS.Types.AGSEditorException "This game was saved by an old version of AGS [...]" at load_old_dta_file). When I click on "OK" there and then select "Start New Game", the templates won't show in the template selection screen anymore (i.e. there's just a plain white area). It doesn't affect the "recently edited games" list, and when restarting the editor the templates are visible again, but I can recreate this error. Due to a crash of my hdd, I haven't got any other "old" games to check if this always happens with games created by versions before 2.7, but I'd consider it likely.

Other than that, great work. Kudos!

Critics' Lounge / Re: Several Midi files.

Heh, I don't even have that movie. To be honest, not even sure if I actually saw it in the first place.
Two pirate tunes? Actually, only the PaleIsle one is meant to be in such a setting, and it's more of an intro/cutscene tune as a background one, I agree with you there. (But as I won't have any use for that one in the next few years it'll probably go into the contribution thread, not sure yet.)
The other three tunes are for said cyberpunk project. Do you think one of them doesn't have such an athmosphere to it?

Yeah, that makes sense. Probably rather a vital discovery resulting in a confrontation or something, because the metallic pad adds a bit of mystical feeling to the tune. I was so focused on what I intended it to be for that I didn't get this idea myself.

Thanks.

Critics' Lounge / Several Midi files.
Sat 05/01/2008 02:00:05
Uh, yeah. The title just about says it.
http://seele01.se.funpic.de/jams/tbimidis.zip
The archive contains:
- PALEISLE.mid: piratey (as in: Monkey-Island-ish) setting, but a more serious game, with a spooky touch and cursed islands and stuff.
Issues: i) I think it sounds a bit too artificial, I'd probably need to modify the velocity, but I can't seem to get it right. ii) I'm not sure if it's just my speakers (I'm bound to laptop ones right now), but sometimes the Timpanis (Channel 4) seem muted.
Notes: game idea abandoned almost directly after composing this tune, so comments on this aren't urgent, and, of course, if you have any use for it--be my guest.
- Search Music.mid: short tune, either for a puzzle or some stealth/stalk thing. I haven't decided yet. If anybody knows "The Three Investigators" (German users might know them as "Die drei Fragezeichen"), the soundtrack of the audio books was what I was going for at first.
Issues: none. Just hoping for impressions/comments/critique/whatever.
- TBI - Station Lounge.mid: theme for a cyberpunk-ish project I started working on a few days ago. Not necessarily main theme (it's maybe a bit too dull for that), I was just going for something for cutscenes without much text (as in: only narrator says some cryptic, yet deep-sounding stuff).
Issues: for the drums, I mainly use notes below the 3 standard bass drum notes on A 0(33), B 0 (35) and C 1 (36), and when playing the file on another PC they sounded really weird. I reckon these notes have assigned different samples depending on the midi driver. It would be helpful if you knew if that's true. If you don't, at least tell me if the drums sound weird on your PC.
- Unused.mid: tune for the same project. I was going for something completely different, though, so I have no clue where to put it yet.
Issues: again, none. Just general critique. And it would be nice if you could tell me where you'd put a tune like this in a game.

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Re: Competition Idea

Although it would probably be funny having a medieval picture coloured 70's style.
And by 'funny,' I mean weird.

I don't think the competition would work on a regular basis, I agree with TheYak here. But, yeah, it's worth a shot, I'd say--although I myself might not be able to take part.

Just my 2 cents.

Critics' Lounge / Re: New style MIDI composing

How's your keyboard connected to your computer? I believe the accuracy of the metronome to be dependent on that rather than on the capacities of your computer. I myself am using a Yamaha S90 with a rather old computer (866 Mhz) via USB, and it still works perfect for me. Then, does your computer do the metronome clicks or the keyboard? Maybe play a bit around with the preferences concerning this.

You'll hear more from me when I got round to listen to your tunes.

Damnit, too late. I thought today was still open for entries.
But thanks for that topic. I will most certainly use what I did as entry in a project of mine, as I really like what I came up with.
But even with my entry, nihilyst would've won. The story is just... amazing.

I'm really impressed. And I love that voice of yours.

General Discussion / Re: Updated my website...

Two, actually. I dig that design.
I actually feel ashamed for even putting up a website myself. But, oh well. Whatever.

I'm impressed.

I did play "The Longest Journey" back in 200x, and I loved it. I'd still recommend it to anyone who's into Adventure games. But that's probably partly because there are memories connected to it.
However, take a look at http://www.longestjourney.com and download the demo version, if you like. It's a rather short one, considering the game consists of 4 CDs. But it's a demo version.

I can't really say much about other games, though. I haven't played "new" ones for ages.

And I probably won't in the next few months.

Thanks.

I mostly was worried because of the drum fade in the middle of the track. The pitch bend thing is actually something I use a lot when doing MIDI stuff. And I wasn't in the mood to set my S90 up, so I was limited to MIDI files.

Well, the first test went better than I thought it would, but I have a certain feeling that I'll completely will mess up the one tomorrow.

Ah, screw it.

I stated that I had a "bad feeling" about this, and that I didn't know why.
That was solely for the purpose that I can now prove I didn't fall for it. And that's what apparently many others should have done instead of reveiling the whole thing.

However, that was a great one. I must admit I would've fallen for it if it wasn't for the "new main page." I was in a hurry and therefore couldn't think over what I read. And the game cancellation--I did believe that. Well done, involved ones.

Applause.

I never even heard of Wintermute, but I do have a bad feeling about this. Dunno why, though.

I guess I'll just wait and see what happens, leaving a "backup copy" of AGS on my hard drive, just in case.

Until then, it's all anticipation.

Hey, everyone.

It's all learning for me at the moment - the a-level tests will begin tomorrow. Just in case you wondered why I haven't posted here for a month or so. You probably haven't anyways.
However, I couldn't stand it. My head was about to explode. To make it cool down, I took a break. A creative break, to be more precise.

Depressive Arcade/Space Private Investigator.

Feel free to love it, hate it, or to not give a damn about it at all. If you think it needs editing, please feel free to do so yourself. Just think of poor me probably not being able to read your suggestions or listen to modifications until July or so.

Also, if you think you could use it in a game of yours... do so. You don't even have to put my name into the credits. Just give me the link to the finished game.

Back to work then. (sighs)

Yes, it is. I was hoping for more entries though.
But let's get this done.

This was a very hard comp to judge. Because of all the entries I couldn't really listen into everything in detail. Yet, I think biothlebop completed the task best of all the entries. He didn't even need to explain his entry to win.

Oh well, let's stop being sarcastic.

OK now. It's Monday, the 20th, but there are still no entries. Now here's my proposition: When the first tune is posted here, I'm gonna wait one or two weeks for others to join in.

I ask you again to tell me if it is the topic or has anything else to do with the contest.

I'm really looking forward to your entries.

Something seems to be wrong with Geocities, I don't know why, but the FTP server won't accept my password and the HTTPS connection doesn't load (timeout). That means I don't get to edit anything on the page.
If it doesn't work for some of you, I'll postpone the closing date, of course.

Sorry for any complications.

No, I won't bother.
Last time a woman got fish poisoning from McD and tried that, they proved that the McFish didn't actually contain fish.
Oh, and I know what's in those Nuggets by now. They actually use eyes and claws. No joke, a friend of mine had an eye that somehow wasn't crushed popping out of one of those things.

Yeah, cheeseburgers rule. But they don't have them in a menu anymore in Germany, so I just ordered the Nuggets menu and bought the cheeseburgers seperately.

Sorry for off-topic.

I know, I have the same problem. It worked quite well with the earlier versions, but somehow it's just the browser plugin that is installed nowadays. A workaround would be manually linking .swf to your browser?

Flash is so 2005, right, [lgm]?

So sorry, guys. I've explained everything in the new thread.

My deepest apologies for the delay.
