General Discussion / Re:Hard Drive?

so, what stops you from adding another?  Whatever mobo they used, it's probably got the usual two IDE channels with 2 devices (master/slave) available for each.  If your IDE 1 cable only has 1 connection, get a new cable.  If this isn't the prob, you could always swap the CD for the new HD long enough to make the transfer.  (Note: If someone has encountered a situation where e-machines uses a mobo that doesn't allow more than 1 HD (somehow) please correct me, but it would be a rarity, indeed)  Back to BuffaloG..  does your manual say it'll only support 1 device per channel or only has one IDE channel?  Is there a model # I can look up to verify stuff?

I've got a Maxtor 7200 RPM 120 G.  Before that I had a Maxtor 7200RPM 60G.  They're not the fastest or best but I've never had any difficulty with Maxtor HD's..  Western Digital, Quantum, Seagate ... another story.  Going to the 60 Gig, Maxtor was kind enough to include a drive-content duplication program and for the other transfer, I hooked 'em up simultaneously and transferred manually.

So..  how come your computer can't handle 2 HD's?  I haven't had a computer since my 386 that couldn't.

I think, for the most part, it looks pretty good.  The pic on the right bugs me (what you were saying about the legs).  It sorta looks like the hip-region is reversed so that her ass is in front.  I'm not really a good enough character-artist to point out specifics but you might try looking at a couple of poses from other adventure games or pictures.  The curves made by the musculature are a bit off..   a few pixels moved here and there would do a world of good.    Overall, nice job, looks like it'd fit right in w/ a 320x200x256 adventure game.

I dunno..perspective isn't a rule written in stone as far as backgrounds go.  Sure, it makes the drawing look more correct, but I sorta like the 30 and 60 degree angles to everything.  It's kind of a pseudo-isometric design of sorts.  Another way to do perspective, even when using a crappy program like paint is to have your center point (or points) in a bright color you can easily remove and then use the line tool to angle stuff in the right direction.  You can extend it all the way and remove the extras, or you can extend it and keep in mind what angle the line should be at.

QuoteOther possible bug: I'm running Win 2k on work's computer, a P500 w/ a Riva 128 8M. Any AGS game or demo will not display anything in fullscreen mode.
I'd say that's likely to be a DirectX or graphics driver issue. Work machines often don't have these components upgraded (who needs them to run Word, right ;) ) so they will more than likely be very old driver and/or DX versions which don't run AGS well.
[/size]
Nah, tried the above.  Various driver versions don't help.  Ah, well.  No fun at work, I guess.  :P Alright, this is odd.  As long as I run a game in a window and click-hold on the window title, the game will display (animate) properly.  I can play the demo game by clicking what I want on-screen (guessing where the cursor might be) and then dragging the title to see what happened.   ???

Congratulations on your 1st year.  Best of luck.  Whenever you hit one of those "bumps" just take a moment to consider whether whatever-it-is is really such a big deal, or if it's something each of you can get over.   Remember the good times, and let the bad ones fade.  All-in-all, you'll look back and see the average of the two as being some of the best years of your life.

Alright, that's as gooshy and hopeful as I can be.. I can't deny my cynicism forever... thus I sign off.

I lived in North Carolina and they told us the missing word was, "Beat."  Supposedly the old law was that you could take your wife to the front of the courthouse and legally beat her, only with a paddle or hand, once a week.  They also informed us that as Federal employees, we could not take advantage of this law.  Dammitalltohell!

It's excellent.  Quite professional in the retro-sense.  Since you want some c&c though:

It's difficult to tell what the central focus of the image is.  Is the action going to take place in the street?  Or is it going to take place on the rooftops?  The image is excellent but if it were redrawn, I would bring the "camera" focus in a couple meters to better bring the road into the center and displace the rooftops somewhat.

The only thing that makes the image look busy is the massive diffusion.  There are a few options for limiting this.  1) go high-color but suffer the speed consequence and the old-schoolers' scorn 2) have no diffusion but instead have color-banding.  3) make the shades a bit more similar so it has the same "dots" but they blend into each other a little better.

In my opinion, the rooftop to the left looks fine the way it is but the sky would look cleaner and less distracting if all the patterns were filled with solid colors (if you solid-colored your sky's "wisps" it would look friggin' awesome, IMO).

Aw, crap.  I'm at work so can't u/l an example or two.  Minimi, did you even look at the site?  The "artist" merely placed mountains, adjusted the time-of-day lighting and threw in some water.  This is not an example of precision or artistry.  I have used Bryce a bit and try to ensure anything I make in it doesn't look 100% Bryce-like.  If you'd read the entire post, you might've noted that I wasn't griping about people that actually spend time to delve into the program some and I did state that Bryce and Poser can be useful tools in the right hands.  The images at the URL above are the work of someone experimenting with the program as a novice and shouldn't have been posted on a website, at least not without some kind of mention about experimentation.  The person bills their website as a home of the future of digital fantasy art.

As to whether I've messed with grouping and modelling in the program, here's a crappy example from when I was first experimenting in Bryce..  the blue animal was put together in Bryce then exported to 3ds max to render.  http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.geocities.com/fishlight/aardvark.jpg (Yes, I realize it sucks.. 1] It was from awhile ago and 2] at least the aardvark-y thing doesn't resemble something made with a bryce default)

Argh.  For the 1 or 2 members of this forum that don't frequent the somethingawful site, I give a small bit of advice:

Please don't download Bryce and/or Poser, use the default settings and simply throw stuff around until it "looks cool."  If you must do this in order to learn the program, don't feel compelled to share. :-\

It's a pet-peeve of mine when people don't have any sense of originality, no skill, no sense of composition and take the lazy way out by using programs like Bryce & Poser to compensate.  Yes, I know.  Bryce and Poser can be excellent tools in the right hands but there really ought to be an exam given before you can download them.

Other possible bug: I'm running Win 2k on work's computer, a P500 w/ a Riva 128 8M.  Any AGS game or demo will not display anything in fullscreen mode.  In windowed mode, no mouse interaction is possible.  The only exception I've found was with Scotch's tech-test demo (I believe made w/ AGS 2.6 b5), which was only able to run windowed but allowed mouse use.

Trying to track down possible culprits within computer itself since previously-compiled games don't run, it's probably this thing's fault.

There are a couple tutorials that you could check out (I'm sure there are more out there, these are just the ones I've familiar with):

http://www.sylpher.com/kafka/tutorials/curves.htm
http://www.sylpher.com/kafka/tutorials/chartut.htm

Both deal a bit with your question.  As far as specifics..  I've had the best luck by 1) inking over pencil sketches and erasing the pencil-lines, making for crisper, higher-contrast line-drawings 2) scanning as line-art (though this can produce some weird line artifacts that need cleaning, I've found it to be the best for my purposes) and 3) juggling brightness/contrast controls to slowly phaze the image into B&W.  If the paint program has it, you can often also choose the range that the fill tool will affect.  For instance, if set to zero, you'll only fill with blue the areas that are 100% white.  If set to 20, it'll allow a range of 20 so that very light greys are affected also.

Starting a new one just for the sake of cleaning it up a bit would be fine w/ me.  I don't really see a need but here's a suggestion.  At the end of x number of pages or posts or whatever, we could vote on who did the best general job with the limited tool provided (MS-Pain) and they can kick off the new one with a topic.  Not much incentive, but at least it would be some incentive to contribute.

All in all, one of the more fun activities..

And it goes nicely with the aforementioned zombie movies.  Those glowing red eyes and grey skin... creepy.

I wouldn't mind one, how much are they?

I'd sell mine for $2.

Eh, I don't know.  I think for a movie to say "Well, I KNOW I'm cheesy, so it's ok that I suck!" is sort of a cop-out.  If the movie itself knows it's bad, I won't even bother.

That was my point exactly...  The movie knew it was cheesy..  The follow-up DEFINATELY knew it was cheesy.  All 3 rock, in my humble opinion.  Just remember that there are exceptions, you famous old person, you.
