A bird in the hand:

Okay, first off I know that there are other threads on this (IRC) but wanted a short and simple one to avoid confusion.  If you're new to #AGS or have no idea what IRC is or how to chat, see section XXIV-b.  Otherwise, skip to section CLVII, sub-section Alpha-Sierra-Sierra.

XXIV-b) IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat.  It's much like yahoo-chat or chatrooms on other sites except that it goes directly through various IRC-servers, bypassing all that web-tripe.  If you download a program to use chat (such as mIRC or pIRCh) or even use a web-based IRC-client, you just have to set the server to Random Quakenet Server (with a preference for your locale).  After you're connected to a quakenet server, enter #AGS in the rooms dialogue box.  If there is no dialogue box, use /join #AGS at the prompt.  Rules for chat appear after joining the room.

CLVII)
Alpha-Sierra-Sierra) mIRC has been updated to 6.1 with a bunch of new features and a lot of bug-fixes.  Go here to download: http://www.mirc.com

okay, I'm done here, return to your evil ways.

Excellent point, Las..  Davis (our current gov) is an excellent example.  He walks into an office for a state that is currently in the black a good 8 billion dollars.  After a couple months he thinks to himself, "Hey, I ought to get off my ass and do something with that extra cash.  I know!  We'll spend it like crazy."  Currently, California's in the red for about 50 billion.  I know that anyone can be corrupted and anyone (even those who seem remotely honest) can be misanthropic. However, I think I might trust Arny to be the lesser of two evils in this case.  At least we know he'll be a figure-head and a dumb-$h!t.  We don't have to worry about massive business opportunities for the governor in the guise of legislation.

Of course, this topic'll die out fast due to its limited facets and the fact that only 2 out of X # of AGS'ers are actually affected by the result of the vote.

Half of me says, "Go for it, he can't be half as bad as some of the other guys, notably Gray Davis."  The other half reads the interviews and shakes its head as it senses massive stupidity.  Hell, I might vote for him just to avoid voting for some of these other assholes.

If it were altered with wooden walls it wouldn't be staying true to the original.  I say keep the pic as it is, just add the stuff you were planning to.  If there's a fire in the fireplace, that'll serve as an additional light source.  Also, there is probably more than one window in the house, even if only one is in view, you might consider doing another light-casting somewhere in the lower portion.

There is something a bit off about the window, it currently looks like a TV-screen projecting light to the floor.. it's just a tad 2-dimensional.  Do the inner walls of the window-sill and it'll look great.

Excellent work!

maybe you're looking for Bicubic, Mr. C?  Anyway, I hafta disagree with the face comment.  I really like the bland-face look.  It's rather distinctive and allows for some liberties to be taken with animation.  If you (Crabe) can pull off a decent "surprised","angry" or "excitied" animation without having to add a mouth, so much the better.  Most people here are all for 320x200 games (I prefer them myself for the most part).  However, with the hand-painted backgrounds I would so love to see these in higher-res.

On another subject, have you considered doing a background tutorial?  Very few of the talented people around here are willing to share their knowledge.   ;D

umg 50% for hobbes??? yike :o ;)

Errr... yeah. And that is alarming, how? As I am a homo, as Captain Mostly puts it, I think it's good for the test to reveal this.

Maybe it's alarming because you're not very gay for a homosexual?  I mean, I was at 63%, I am so much gayer than you are!  ;D

Excellently done!  The character reminds me a bit of Little Johnny Evil.  Since you've obviously got the skill, how 'bout a touch more detail in the pic?  I can't offer useful criticism, sorry.  It's nifty.

No, but there ought to have been.  It would've been nice to take out aggressions on the conductor and some of the more irritating passengers.

It reminds me of old-school ega games.  I like the layout and it looks like it might work okay as a background but the colors are very CGA-ish.  Explore the paint palette features for mspaint and see if you can't come up with some lower-saturation, more neutral colors and it'll improve ten-fold.

General Discussion / Re:Damn Pop-ups

As far as programs like ad-aware go, there's also Spybot search & destroy..  it has fairly regular updates and is free.  I've been using it for 2 weeks and have had no problem with unsolicited pop-ups.  Regarding the pop-ups even when you aren't visiting sites, some ad/pop-up software installs on your system (either by request or not) and delivers pop-ups to you based upon what you seem to be interested in.  One common program is called Savenow.  Kazaa also installs its own spyware, called cydoor.  It does essentially the same thing.

Maybe you ought to have a sticky for FAQ's?

Suggested questions:

1) What are double pixels?

2) How can I do good backgrounds/characters?

3) What's a good program to use? (Answer: See Paint Prog Thread)

4) What are good animation programs?

Others? ?  Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a little addition in a double pixels explanation that also explains that it's alright if that's what you wanna do, just that some people won't find it very aesthetic and some will even hurl insults and blacklist you from the forums for it.  ::)

If you have the program, I'd recommend going with power-point.  It allows you to insert images and resize and what-not and also has nice basic shapes.  I've made templates using it for cd-labels, covers, dvd-covers, vhs-labels and cassette-tape labels.  I just find it a bit more versatile than your standard cd-labelling program.  Another idea, you can probably find a freeware/shareware cd-label/cover program that'll print the correct size even at higher resolutions.  If you insist on doing it with a paint program, Pessi's post is the way to go.

Holy crap.. I'm 63% gay according to the first test!  I am officially the gayest AGSer to this point.  It says, "Women like you, don't they?  Little do they know you're a wolf in sheep's clothing waiting to pounce."  What the hell?   :)  Thespark's test rates me at completely average gayness (so it says)... 39%.

Destruction of stereotypes... I'm all for it.  I have to give Snake a bit of back-up here first.  It makes me a bit uncomfortable to see two guys kissing.  I was raised in a profoundly Christian home going to a church with no tolerance for homosexuality.  I was never around homosexuals (that I knew of) as a child.  Therefore, I find it a little embarassing.  I can't really help the way I was raised.

Before anyone throws me off a tall cliff so I can fly through the air and have my body crushed and battered on the rocks along with Snake...  I'm pretty uncomfortable when watching a Man and Woman make out in front of me too..  just not used to seeing intimacy in public, in my presence, I guess.

By the way, Dude, Where's My Car was quite the lame movie, but during the male-kissing scene, all I could think was, "Rock on."  Given the context, it was quite amusing.  I also have to give some credit to the two actors (neither of which are gay) who had the balls to do that.

Now back to the stereotype.  I live near San Francisco (within 30 miles) and have done so for about 20 years.  I think I've seen two men hold hands in public twice now.  For a city that is supposed to be filled to overflowing with gay males, it seems unusual that not much of the population wears blinding colors, spends hours on their hair, or speaks with a lisp.  Go figure.  Maybe the approximated 30% homosexual population of the San Francisco Bay Area are all hiding in gay-bars or something.

Personally, I find being in the presence of a stereotypical male is a lot more irritating than being around a flamboyant homosexual.  I have friends in both groups but at least I don't have to discuss motorcycle engines, getting drunk or about how fine the ass of the woman who just passed it.  My gay friend, strangely enough, has never made a sexual comment in public or spoken with a lisp for the 10 years I've known him.

It's excellent!  Fits perfectly with the style of the nude-dude.  Anyway, if it's a pirate ship, shouldn't you have port-holes for cannons?  ;)

So the most important book would seem to be Where the Wild Things Are.    Rock on.  On my bookshelf currently.. it would have to be The Mahdi by Margo Dockendorf
