General Discussion / Re:Polls on this forum?

Mr. C lives to argue with me.  That twitty sod.  I just envision a leading post for each compo that has a nice little graph showing the standings... easy to get the results that way, anonymous (no he voted for me, so I'll vote for him syndrome), and a beautiful thing to a statistician, general lover of numbers or those who merely like pretty colors.  If such a graphing system isn't possible, then to hell with it I say.

They could be useful in their place... in the critics lounge, competitions, feature requests for AGS so CJ could concentrate on the most desired features... just avoiding the gen forum so we don't have polls about which AGS'er has the sexiest backside (Mr. Colossal, of course..I've seen drawings).

Am I the only one who doesn't ask, "what's in it for me?"  Generate some income, start a Men of AGS porn site.   (Okay, VERY little income)

I haven't taken more than a brief glance at RPG creator 2k3, but I know you can customize sprites in RPG 2000.  You just edit the pre-bundled bitmaps in the same grid arrangement.

General Discussion / Re:Morals anyone?

I normally try not to get involved in religious threads but what the hell?  I was raised very Christian.  I found it too be a bit too much "Holier-than-thou" and too little in the substance department.  However, I don't hate Christians ... as long as they don't F with me.  And there is the basic tenant of my belief system: Don't screw with others - try not to do crap that'll mess up other people if you can help it.

BTW, wasn't this topic about whether or not to include potentially offensive religious content in a game?  It's been done before; with subtlety and not-so-much.  I say go for it if it's in keeping with your game's plot, just put a disclaimer/warning in the readme.txt and/or game announcement and nobody shouldn't be offended that doesn't deserve to be.

To hell with PC.

General Discussion / Re:The Matrices
Tue 20/05/2003 16:53:50
My proverbial 2 money units:

I saw the Matrix: Reloaded on the 15th and enjoyed the experience.  I may mention something from the movie that might spoil it for others.  If that's the case, then wtf is that particular dumbass doing reading this thread?

I found the Matrices, particularly The Matrix, to be a welcome introduction of the masses to the sci-fi/cyberpunk world.  There have been very few movies of this type and not many have been any good.  Shall I name a few examples?  Hackers, Bladerunner (which some may argue about but was unnecessarily obscure and was much less interesting than the novel, "Do androids dream of electric sheep?"), Lawnmower Man (which vaguely comes into this category and was loosely based upon a Stephen King short story that has absolutely nothing to do with anything digital).

The Matrix had a nice, "What if?" factor coupled with some excellent camera work and some nice HR Gigerish imagery.

On to Reloaded:  It leapt right back to the ending of the original, and relied heavily upon action.  Do fight scenes really need to take up 3/4 of the movie in order to keep our attention?  The scene where he's beating up the Mr. Smiths is unnecessarily long.  I know it's meant to be an epic battle and show the force he's up against in that department but it actually gains tedium rather quickly.  I didn't care too much about the car chase but enjoyed the in-the-car fight scene for its intricacy.  I, personally, would've preferred a bit more dialogue in the movie although it has actually been criticized for having too much.  I'm totally with Eric on one thing: WTF was with that rave scene?  The techo was sub-par and watching a bunch of neo-tribalists jumping around is hardly my idea of entertainment.  The love-scene was particularly sterile as Keanu gives it at much depth and feeling as he does most of his characters (will he ever get any better than Bill & Ted?).  The "Exploding Vagina" scene was unnecessary.  Not that I found it offensive, merely excessively stupid.  My wife refers to the scene as the Orgasm Cake scene while I refer to it as the Unhealthy Devil's Food that promotes bladder infection and a severe need to urinate.  That said, I found Reloaded to be an entertaining diversion in the form of some nicely-implemented action taking place in a fairly familiar sci-fi world.

There are some, my sister among them, that consider a movie to be a waste of time unless it provides some insight into the human psyche or provides them with some bit of knowledge so they can walk away from it feeling that the time has been well spent.  I, for one, think a movie is a means of escape, relaxation and entertainment.  I enjoy comedys, dramas, action flicks, indie flicks, "B" movies and others.  If you want something in-depth or meant to be a learning experience, take a college course.  Read a book.  Do some internet research on a topic that interests you.  But don't go see some audio/visual entertainment that will last anywhere from 80 to 160 minutes and is meant to appeal to the majority of the population.

Let's see... I've been hit by a car, had a brown recluse bite, had a cigarette burn into my skin that had been tossed from a car in front of me, chipped my heel-bone kicking in a door, stepped on a needle which went all the way through my big toe until I could feel the tip scraping on the underside of the toenail and then the needle snapped off.  I've had a screwdriver stuck in my palm, a fork stuck through my finger, and a hamster bite go halfway through my thumb.  Oh, and while using a dremel on some metal a piece of metal flew from my work and stuck into my eyeball (despite my wearing safety glasses at the time); it was annoying but I figured it was just irritated and it'd been blinked out... it actually was in for a few days and rusted a bit.   The optometrist got the piece out with (guess what?) a small dremel tool.  I know there are more and some probably more odd but since it's 6AM here and I just got off work I can't think of any.

Edit: REmembered a couple, one thanks to Iqu.  I'm not very emotional, so I put a cigarette out in my thigh to show my girlfriend that I was truly annoyed (idiotic, I know.. I was young).  Also, I stepped on some glass...  I thought I got most of it out but there was a piece I missed.  Walked around on it, thinking it was uncomfortable boots for awhile.  Eventually noticed that a triangular portion of my sole was fairly translucent.  Took a razor and removed the glass.  I didn't protect it very well so I got a viral infection in the form of Veruca Plantarus (a wart on the bottom of my foot)  I went to have it removed after having tried acids.  The guy didn't get all of it, but did cut a healthy hole out of the bottom of my foot (I have pics)...  After that finally healed, we discovered that the wart was coming back.  I went to a specialist (who happened to be a Navy doc with a chip on his shoulder towards Marines whining about their illnesses).  He was to freeze the wart with liquid nitrogen.  Instead of isolating it, he just poured it on my foot, giving me frostbite and massive skin damage on my toes.  I told him that he was getting it on my toes but he said it wouldn't hurt anything.  A couple of days later, I literally could not use size to differentiate my other toes from my big toe.  Sounds like a whiny story, but I remember it as an humorous anecdote.

Veteran doesn't meant fought in a war.   It means served in the military.  However, I guess if you wish to be stringent about it...  I was in the service for the latter part of the croatian crap and was in when the 9/11 deal went on.

Perhaps we just need a regularly updated odd-injuries thread.  It seems every couple of weeks some AGS'er has something bizarre happen to them.  (Every week if you count myself)

Veteran's day can't really be a rip-off of ANZAC day...  need I remind you it's a celebration of the country's veterans....  not just the dead ones.

I'm a veteran.  Please don't mourn me.

Hey Yak, Does it say "the cheese stands alone" under your picture? And if so, what the fuck does it mean?

If you haven't heard it before, it'd be meaningless to you anyway.

To set more of the record straight (kinda off topic, but trying to end the diversion) every religion has some sort of primary philosophy.  The Satanist's philosophy is the satisfaction of ego.  "If it feels good, do it," might be an appropriate summary.  The Satanist isn't really a worshipper of Satan (in most cases) as much an a follower of his teachings.  Look out for yourself, don't worry about others.  There's happiness to be found in the here and now.  Mostly, it's about self-gratification - not just bells, pentagrams and naked chickens.

Well..   there's no MS-Paint.   ::)

I'll add my two cents:

CorelDraw - Vector-capable program similar to the basic options of PSP.  A handy program that costs a tad less than PS.

Ulead PhotoImpact - The one I use.  Mainly aimed toward web-graphic development.  Can use both image objects and path objects (Bitmap and vector, basically).  Many options resemble paint shop pro.  I'd probably use PhotoShop instead but I've been using this one for years.  Price is comparable to Coreldraw, I believe.

One thing we ought to mention is that if you like PhotoShop or just would prefer it to Paint Shop Pro but you dislike the cost, there's also Adobe Elements which is more-or-less a scaled down version of Photoshop that probably has all options you'll need at a far more reasonable price.

(Edit: Done, '·_·', with the exception of Photoimpact, I kinda figured it was obvious.)

The reason videos are so expensive when they're first released is because Blockbuster somehow got some system implemented where movies are released to rental places first so people will rent movies before they buy them. Unless they want to cough up the 100$, obviously.

Actually many titles are for sale at about the same time as they are for rent.  Due to competition, I suppose.  One example is Harry Potter.  Hollywood video, Inc. carried this movie on a certain date for 19.99 and released it for rent the same day.  Walmart was also selling it that day, but for 14.99.  As far as Blockbuster goes, the most manipulative practice I know they have is that of negotiating for movies released by its parent company (Time-Warner) to not be rented at Hollywood videos.

I've gotten past that part but it was on the Playstation version.  I tried yours on a semi-legitimate backup copy of the PC version.  As far as the Playstation goes, I got the final boss battle and noted that it was 6AM and decided to get some sleep.  I never felt like taking it back up and my savegame's since been erased.

Best of luck solving your crisis.. maybe with some on-line scanning you can find a saved game at the part you want.. of course the characters won't be customized or anything..

Actually, the movies aren't that expensive for the places to purchase.  It runs approximately the MSRP of the initial release + about 10%.

And speaking of Blockbuster vs. local chains..  that's why I like Hollywood video.  They've got the small store's sensability and the Blockbuster selection.  I've never had anything but mediocre to bad experiences with them and every manager of theirs I've met has been an utter throbbing phallus.

I hate to  say this after the very thankful message but I couldn't get it past that part either.  I'll go ahead and go back there and just leave it for a little while (like you did) but I'm dubious.  Anyway, I messed with all graphics and sound settings to see if there was something specific causing the bug but it doesn't seem to be affected.

Sorry ...  I even tried Glide wrappers in case the game liked being run better with 3dfx support... no dice there either.

I vote Earwig...  I really loved GarageGothic and thought it had tons of atmosphere (reminds me of something from AITD 4 or Silent Hill) but Earwig's just screamed noir while GG's was more overall creepy amusement park.
