What about movies based on people playing games?  (e.g. The Wizard)

Yeah, but you're old.  Lots of stuff scares you.   ;)

MrAnonymous (if that's even your real name), haven't played either of 'em but from what I've heard the Nemesis stalking gets more annoying than terrifying.

I vote Evenwolf.  I just got a stronger image in my demented little head of this being used in a game. [Ambient blathering, sounds of passing cars & maybe a clown-inspired bouncer, who knows?]  Besides, Rincewind used pink. :P

Fear is a lot more difficult to invoke.  At least if you are talking about fear being atmospheric or chronic.  I think that's why a lot more games go for the startles or shock (massively gory/disturbing scenes).  If you fail at instilling a game with fear then it becomes laughable whereas an element of surprise nearly always works to some extent.

I don't believe I've seen any pure adventure games that have much element of fear.  About the closest I've played is more creepy or disturbing.  Harvester - disturbing, Gabriel Knight SotF - Creepy (in places).  The most common way I've seen an aspect of fear done in an adventure is the "if I don't do this carefully/quickly/correctly I will die/have to do it again/view that horrid movie segment again" type.

As far as startle/fear goes, I think of the RE games as startlers.  They seldom have much creepiness & the atmosphere can be a bit creepy until you get used to it.  Silent Hill did a nice job with establishing a disturbing/creepy atmosphere both during gameplay and with movie segments, it just fell a little flat by not having the fear come to a peak at any point (at least for me).  System Shock 2 had a great creepy/fear-inducing atmosphere with its share of startling moments, its downfall in the realm of fear, in my opinion, was that it wasn't able to suspend disbelief, mainly due to occasional over-the-top speech and enemies that could be a bit goofy.  As far as Doom goes, I felt it was more of an "Oh, my god, there are 20,000 enemies and I've only got 6 shots" type of experience.  I expect a good fear-factor in D3, however.

Okay, a little later than planned (had a @#$^%!# of a day today).  ScottDoom, I choose you.  You dredged up a painful thought that I hadn't been pissed about in some time and nearly managed to push me over the edge.
I really dug Earlwood's style on that sub but felt it was more of a controversial issue kind of submission rather than a pet peeve kind-of-thing.  Besides, I'm not sure what about pulling a fetus' spine out using alligator clips pisses you off.  Veryweird guy got 6 bonus points for the nifty animation but gets -372 for doing a subject I disagree with (now if it had been a residential area...).
Hotspot had a nice idea and communicated it perfectly but he gets only 1 point total because of effort.

Might an example of your point be Pollock (The artist), Remixor?

Definately a point I agree with, unbridled originality without any structure or substance behind it isn't, by default, good.  It has more in common with mankind's depravity than it does with its creativity.

The whole thing was rather anticlimactic as well.  Hitler didn't become a genetically-manipulated super-being and we didn't have a hero wipe out Japan, they just threw a couple bombs at it to wrap things up quickly since people were becoming bored with the whole production.  Tedium indeed.

It reads similarly to the KJV bible. Elrond begat Frodo who begat Beelzebub and then in the dawning of the year of light of the latter century of the damnable equinox of the fourth millenium did mankind seek to place itself most jauntily in the forethrust of antiquity.  It has a similar purpose in my opinion, to provide knowledge for those that seek it, not necessarily to entertain.  If I wanted to read a work such as this, I would rather pick up something non-fiction so it would at least serve a purpose or provide me with usuable information.  To each his/her own, I suppose.

Well, going by Greenwich Mean Time, it would be the end of the 16th in another half hour.  Unfortunately, I have to leave for work soon so I'll pick one in about 3 hours.  Time Zones are a bitch, I #@% hate time zones.

Don't forget to throw on a Melia-"humor" quiz as well.  Maybe a BOYD one would help out a bit also.  Oh, and a DG-section and perhaps a Farlander one.  Ah, screw it, we're all a bunch of messed up individuals.

I think you're underestimating how much of an impact high-res/hi-color can have on AGS games.  200 Mhz machines aside, my work PC is 500 Mhz and strains at 640x480x32b with games using the new 2.6 effects.  Hell, I'd bet there'd be some jerkiness with a 733.  Granted, quite a few of us run faster machines than that but why single out a percentage of users of an already small group?

As for the screenshot-issue, I don't think there's a lot of advantage to posting 800x600 shots.  Most people here aren't so graphic-hungry that they need to know that a game's still going to look beautiful in full-screen vs a 640x480 screenshot.  Of course, you're free to do as you choose.  I just find that screenshots that large seem more like excessive clutter in the forums than anything.

Mostly, in which way do you mean that?  800x600 in games or as a Windows Res?  In games, I haven't seen too many that would need that vs. 640x480 and the added slow-down isn't worth the trade-off IMO.  As a win-res, some people just prefer it and it does give your system a slightly faster edge speed-wise due to decreased memory requirements.

Agreed.  Until it's explained, I would assume that the character lost his feet in Vietnam or something.  I think the best bet (if you really wanna avoid getting messed up by shoes) is to just have the sole showing a bit, just a few pixels to show that something shoe-like is sticking out of the pants would be good.

I play my music fairly loudly, but only on the highway.  What I hate are the bastards who play high-bass "music" while driving through residential areas (usually at 40 mph in a 25 zone).  It doesn't help my disposition much that most of our neighbors blast mariachi music during the daylight hours.

Now introducing Femme: The New Pub-Trans Gestapo.

I don't think it is actually clear whether he put his feet on the back of a chair or on the seat itself and unless he just strolled through a mud-puddle he's probably not dirtying up too many asses that way.  Strange thought, that one should worry about dirtying others' asses.   :P

Gotta mention my sister, Emmy. She's fourteen and rocks more than most of you.

I probably count as most of you.  Checked it out and she's got some real talent.  Professional-quality coloring/cartooning and she's young yet.  I'm too old and crotchety to grow as an artist.

(I secretly suspect that Trap's parents used genetic-manipulation to obtain offspring and are starting their own army of wunderkind)

Have to definately side with you on this one.  Saw a Honda Accord (An Accord!) with a 1.5 ft spoiler.  WTF?  Here's an idea, let's take a non-sporty (or semi-sporty) car, paint some racing stripes on it, give it kick-ass rims, a spoiler & drop it so it rides 2 inches off the ground.  Why not?  [If you ask yourself that question, just kill yourself.  Now.]

Alright, not very funny.  It was funnier before the frustrating 1/2 hour it took to get this PC working properly. :P

If you can't rip the contents to an iso using Nero, you might try some other programs.  There are some freeware alternatives available (I believe there are a couple at Afterdawn.  I seem to remember that WinISO does this as well, though I could be mistaken.  If you've made sure the disc is finalized, burned different media successfully and ensured that files are good when you copy them, I can't really see any reason you shouldn't be able to access it.  All I can assume (without mucking about with it myself) is that you're hosed.  Sorry.

It's got to be due to some sort of overdose.  Which particular drug I haven't decided upon yet.  Owns no X-Box but asks about an X-Box port of AGS.  The assumption by mid-way through the thread is that she would then be able to play AGS games.  Now we must believe that she wishes for somebody to create an imaginary port of AGS to use with her imaginary X-Box.  Futhermore, she does not own a PC yet uses one extensively, leaving us to conclude that she only has access via school or work.  Or, she has one but does not realize it as she's only used it in a state of somnambulism.
