General Discussion / Re:holiday loot

I went nuts buying stuff for my parents and politely asked 'em not to get me anything.  Dad couldn't resist, though.  I just bought a new car so he got me a disposable camera to keep in the glovebox to use when I get into my first accident (I've got a squeaky-clean driving record, BTW).  Sadistic bastard.  ;D

Thank god! Based upon the subject, I feared that it might have a nude picture of Petteri.  My newfound relief fills me with holiday-spirit so, "Merry Winter Holidays everyone!"

Heh.. I saw the site and am waiting for this one almost as eagerly as for the Lost Skeleton...

You know it's gotta be great when they have a trailer posted and it's got the Stargate theme music in the background.  ;)  No expense spared.

Currently, the symbols on the outside look a bit flat.  They look more like they're inlaid using a different colored stone than the rest of the building.  One approach might be to return them to the color of the building, remove the dark lines around and inside of 'em and then use shadows & highlights to show their relative "3d-ness."

Looking at the pic, you obviously know what you're doing...   but IMO those dark lines around the symbols have to go.  Oops, looking at the pic again, noticed that you have the brick-work laid out kinda Grid-style, like this: .  Normally, the only time you see this sort of pattern on architecture is when it's been placed over the building stone, often with tiles.  A building like the one you've depicted I think would look more natural with a brick structure like this: , perhaps with mortar-lines thrown in as well.

I just found out I'm getting paid early and extra so I'll be blowing about $500 more dollars on friends & family.  I couldn't care less if I get anything for Christmas but I dig giving presents, particularly ones that I've had some personal input in.  As for my gay lover? He's not getting sh*t.  Refuses to give a reach-around, the bastard.

Work gave me my Christmas present: A card with a note that a donation was made in my name to some charity or other, and a Creative Nomad Muvo Mp3-player/USB-drive with company logo printed on it by Creative.

General Discussion / Coincidental headlines

Every once in a while you come across a newspaper or webpage that has headlines that seem to compliment each other a bit.  Here's one from today's MSN front page:

Mr. Dude, thanks for posting this.  Trying to assimilate the author's pointers are beyond my current skill level but the paintings and linked sites are amazing.  Quite a bit of mech/manga but a number of sites (as well as the author's pictures) demonstrate a lot of universally helpful pointers.   Thanks for pointing me/us in that direction.

Your painting: I assume you were trying to ensure proper focus, etc.  You must've had a bit of success here.  I admit Pessi's points were valid but I didn't notice a bloomin' thing outside of the main focal-point of the image.

I like the hi-sat colored from the top-right image but his skin-color looks a bit unnatural.  The top-right image shows good skin-coloring (IMO) but the uniform/details could use a bit of distinction.  I believe that the low color-saturation is making the image as a whole blend a bit.  As far as the Flash picture (I'm assuming Flash) goes, I think it's got a skin-color issue as well.  The skin-color is a tad too brown-related to look convincing.  It's more the color that a Taco Bell worker's pants might be.  If you made it just the slighest bit more white (for a pale dude), pinkish or yellowish it might not look quite as drab.

I like your style quite a bit.  The top-left is my favorite of the 3.  One way to tweak it for the better (again, only my opinion speaking here) is to make the dark shades a bit more consistent.  His right arm uses fairly dark outlines, as does his chest but everywhere else has fainter outlines that tend to blend the pieces of the whole together.  I realize that it's probably to demonstrate distance from the viewer or to add shading but I think a tad less difference might help.

Sorry.. I'm feeling very artsy today but sucking at it so I'm rambling.  :-\

I'm an excellent 47% pure!  And I had to answer yes to that eyeball one.

I dig the speedy connections.  In the Marine Corps we had a T1-line.  That was fairly sweet.  However, even using slow-ass DSL at home, I've yet to find many sites that allow me to download at max speed.  With Kazaa, the highest I ever get is around 50k/s and that's extremely rare.  If I use a download-assistant program, throw in about 5 mirrors for a file (using Getright or something), I still never manage much over 130 k/s.  Myself, I'm content if a file transfer stays above 10/second.

Andrew Carnegie, for some time, was the leader/president of the Simplified Spelling board.  There was a President who began backing it but I can't remember which one.  I do, however, remember what Mark Twain said about Simplified Spelling: "Simplified spelling brought about sun-spots, the San Francisco earthquake, and the recent business depression, which we would never have had if spelling had been left all alone."

It's about the everyday-man's defiance of the massive corporate machine in order to pursue the co-existance of man with goat-yogurt.

I never understand the speed stuff cause it never seems to make sense,

eg. 1632 Kbps or 200 Kbytes per second.

they're not quite the same speed though 1632 kbps is probably about what I'd expect on a 200kbyte connection.  The KBPS stands for kilo-bits per second.  Divide that by 10 and you've got your Bytes Per second.  Why 10?  Because 8 bits = 1 byte, +1 parity bit, +1 stop bit.  That's why your max BPS rating when using a 28.8 modem was a simple conversion to 2.88 k/second.  (Aside from compression, of course)  It gets more confusing when you don't know if your ISP has rated your connection in marking Kilos or scientific Kilos.  (1000 vs. 1024).  All in all, a pain in the ass.

Broadband - DSL - 512Kbs.  Measured at Max download=900kbps and max u/l @ 384kbps.

[Er Santa, I'm sure you access to the best technology and everything but 100Mbps?  You sure you're not talking about your Ethernet?]

General Discussion / Re:Saddam Captured?
Wed 17/12/2003 07:02:49
Next comes the really amazing part.  Most people here will stand here open-mouthed in shock (and awe? ;)) when Bush is elected for a second term.   Yes, our populous is that stupid (at least 51% are, based upon polls).  In a country where only a very small percentage of the citizens actually understand anything about the government or how it works, the Saddam-capture will be enough to clinch the next presidency for him.

It's fairly limited but Mascot's another one.  I used it to make a GIR mascot for awhile until it irritated me and I killed it.
