Theo: Thanks bro! I really loved working in the world and filling it up with little details, so it's awesome to hear it paid off. I really pushed myself with these backgrounds, and am pushing even harder for the second part! (also, I do most AGS related things with little clothing on  8))

Elodie Major has been running a little indie radio station called Airwave Radio with her friend Zak for 5 years now, and they've manage to win a strong following amongst the people of the small town of Wave.

Recently, however, they've found themselves under pressure from mainstream record labels to play their music, and have resisted quite forcefully, but they haven't seen an end to this attempted interference just yet...

This is the first part in the ~airwave~ series of games.



As usual, I have a ton of people to thank:

Sebastian, David and Miranda, who made my strange little dream of having a full radio show in the game come true - and so much better than I expected it to be. When I envisioned doing a radio show for a game, I never thought it'd be anywhere *near* as good as this, and I am totally awestruck that I'm allowed to have such a cool thing in one of my games.

Sebastian once again, for putting up with my craziness and mood swings, for putting together and hosting a radio show despite being super busy with everything else, and for his input in the design and writing departments which was most valuable.

Calin Leaftummy for putting together sounds, testing, listening to me moan about basically everything and cuddles.

Ryan Timothy and Arj0n, for their bug finding efforts once again - I'm sure they're sick of me by now :P

Chris Jones once again, for his lovely engine.

And, of course, everyone who I annoyed whilst making this game, which was no doubt a whole bunch of you. Sorry  ;D

I don't want to argue against proper artistic practices, and I think vanishing points are a fantastic way of coming to terms with how to draw straight things in a way that represents how we see the world.

But I find them super boring. I never use them, and doubt I ever will. The world around us isn't made up of perfectly straight walls, roads, floors or power lines. There are curves, bumps, dents - this, for me, is the stuff that makes a background really come to life. People build things wonky accidentally sometimes, because builders aren't perfect, or are lazy, or the ground shifts over time, or parts of buildings wear out and sag etc.

In fact, I have developed what I guess I'd call "Adventure game perspective" - where I draw my backgrounds to avoid character scaling so the pretty pixels don't get messed up. When you look carefully, you can sometimes see I've drawn a door further back that the player can also use much bigger than it should be when you consider the distance away that it is. This is so when the player walks up to it, they don't look enormous. It's totally wrong from a technical level, yet on a design level nobody has ever complained to me about it :).

So yes, vanishing points are a great way of establishing a foundation for how things work. But you should be able judge it fairly well by eye, really, if you sit back and look at your image once you've sketched out a rough version of it. I personally feel that composition and functionality as a game asset/location take priority over whether all the lines are straight, and will continue (for now, at least :P) to do all my backgrounds content in the knowledge that the perspective lines don't converge at a single point.

I think you're pretty right, but it's gosh darned hard to think of new ways to do it. I've been trying to find out how to make post-adventure games for ages now and I keep coming back to plain old adventure games.

That poker playing chap instantly reminded me of the character designs from the LucasArts FPS game Outlaws - which is certainly not a bad thing!

Theo posted the exact screen from The Dig that came to my mind as soon as I read your post, it really is one of the most memorable backgrounds in any adventure game I've played, and really demonstrates the fact that animating a scene can take its atmosphere to the next level. A good example of how animation can do this is the title screen of Infinity String - my breath was truly taken away when I first saw that.

Another LucasArts game that sticks in my mind is Full Throttle:



For me, the strong use of lighting was very evocative, and really took the feeling of being in a futuristic wasteland to the next level. One of these days, I plan to play through the game again and screen capture every single background for my own reference - it really left that much of an impression on me.

One of my all time favorite settings ever was that of Beyond Good & Evil:



Here, it wasn't just the graphics that made the locations so memorable - they were full of strange creatures (which the game rewarded you for finding and learning about), beautiful music and lovely lighting effects. From the deep mining caves, to colorful Hillys City, to the enormous neo-industrial factories, the game is full of memorable locations.

One more, although it's not *really* an adventure: Planescape: Torment. I'd really love to see more games set in the Planescape universe, simply because it's so surreal. Torment really worked with this and created a game that is full of totally unique locations that are as memorable for their concepts as they are for the landscapes themselves. It goes to show how much more interesting a location becomes when you start to walk around it and learn about its secrets, how much more the addition of knowledge about a place can help us really appreciate it.
