Thanks for the tips, AtelierGames and Trihan :)

It isn't set in the past, but with that in mind I might keep it the way it is anyway.

Ho ho! I have a question and there is actually a proper thread kicking around in which to ask it so that I do not have to make a new one  :D

In writing, I sometimes see the word "O" where I would usually expect an "Oh", and I am wondering whether there is any particular rule which dictates when or where this is appropriate.

For example, last night I wrote the line "O Timothy, my love, why must we be separated so?" into my game, but when playing it I was unsure if it was correct or not. Any thoughts?

Thanks, F1ak3r.

I've actually had the idea about having a fly as the player character kicking around in my head since I first started trying to make games, but hadn't gotten around to trying it until now. I'm glad I did try it, and also that you enjoyed it!

As for the next game - well, there's no telling when it will be, but I am looking forward to showing what I've been working on - I think it'll be a good one :).

What I've played and seen of this really made me chuckle, and I look forward to seeing more of it! I really love the art style :D

And yes, the first time Ghost showed me that he drew a character in a straightjacket I immediately thought "I wish I'd thought of that!"  :=

Thanks everybody! I'm starting to get a bit more comfortable with arranging the elements now, I think :).

I've tried to do a whole bunch of new things in this one - everything Mash and Loominous mentioned, pretty much. I might have gone a little over the top in trying to frame the little booth (which I think is at about the right mark on the golden ratio) but I feel it works alright.

Lots of roughness brushstroke wise, and some dubious shadows and highlights here and there, but it took me long enough as it is!

As for sunlight - well, I think now that I might leave that little challenge for a while yet until I'm comfortable with this one. But I do appreciate the advice, and I'm sure it'll come in handy when I finally do get around to tackling it.

More elaborate sketch this time:

I tried to add similar elements to the last one but make reduced walk depth. I've stuck to the kind of monochrome idea just to keep it simple for now.

Some of the shadows are a bit iffy, as are some of the compositional elements, but I feel it is a step up in some ways.

Thanks for the comments and advice all - I think I've gotten into the habit of thinking that cities should be all straight lines and flat surface  :-\. It seems like in order to learn to do better backgrounds I need to change my way of thinking completely.

So, here I've sketched up a background using loose lines and lots of different angles. I tried to make a layered background like when doing a more natural background... am am pretty pleased with the overall shape.

As for lightsources... I am having a hard time doing sunlight in a way that I like. It's a lot brighter than I expect it to be, and when I finish a sketch it always looks a lot darker than it should. I guess I'll have to try experimenting with going a bit overboard with the light and see where I end up.

Any thoughts?

I...

I think that some religions are sometimes a little bit silly about some of the things they do.

I also think that some politicians aren't very good and that other people would be better at running some countries.

...there, I said it.

Buckethead: Awww, I missed your comment in all the musical chats :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I like making short games  ;D

I am slowly trying to increase the length of the games I make (although this was probably a step backwards) and the next one will probably have a bit more meat to it! But, because I'm trying to make games while also working full time, it's a bit hard to stay motivated on a project that is really big. So... while I hate to disappoint, I'll stick to short games for now and hope you'll still enjoy them :). Thanks for playing, anyway!

Yeah. I looked at your 'overview'.

It's a lot of things about flying sea horses with membrane wings and being homeless and pushing bins and being afraid of tractors and robots killing me.

But I have absolutely no idea what any of it means. It reads like a walkthrough that was translated with Google language tools, and it doesn't catch my interest. In fact, it makes me go " ??? if this is the way he promotes his game, imagine trying to play the damn thing!".

I would suggest letting people look at your site without needing to install Unity player, as well. Pablo got it right: Put some time into making a website we can understand!

Edit: Also, "Heterosexual situations game" is perfect if you are trying to make a crude, cheesy piece of comedy. But if you want to introduce a serious game with that... well, it is a pretty creepy phrase  :=

I've been working on a game that is 60% sim like Little Computer People and 40% adventure game, which I've found very interesting and liberating so far.  Basically, while you have direct control via the arrow keys (or wasd) of the protagonist you also handle minor day-to-day issues like using the bathroom, eating, and making money, all the while interacting with your pet (you can feed and take it with you places) and indulging in adventures, either alone or with the protagonist's friends.  The way I approached the non-linear design was basically to pick a specific gameplay sequence that appealed and completely design it as a separate, self-contained 'adventure'.  For instance, there's a Halloween adventure in the game that you can unlock that is a complete adventure on its own, so I made a separate script file for it and designed it separately from the rest of the game, requiring NO items beforehand (although certain carried-over items can make things easier).

Someday I will complete this game! ._.

Hooray! Boyd quest!  :D ??? ;D

cpage: I'm interested to hear that you chose this game after not playing an AGS game for ages, but pleased nonetheless. I really appreciate your kind words about the graphics and story, and thank you for playing the game and taking the time to comment :).

Arj0n: Thanks! It has been pretty surreal to see how popular the game has been, especially as I was a bit unsure as to how well it would go down. I'm really very encouraged by the response it has gotten!

Peder Johnsen: Cheers bro :). I tried to build things up towards a nice finish, so it is good to see the last part of the game worked well. Thanks for playing, hosting, and patiently listening to me ramble on MSN ;D.

Jeopardy: I can definitely see why you find the game strange, but am very pleased to see that you enjoyed it anyway! Thank you for playing and for your nice comments :).

Wesray: Agreed, very much not a typical adventure game - especially the lack of inventory and single click interface. It is really good to see that these didn't detract from the experience too much, so thank you for your feedback, and for giving the game a whirl!

blueskirt: Ah, I see what you mean. Your imagination went that way! I can see how that would have worked really nicely as a story, actually :D.

Ghost: As for the gender of the main character... well... it isn't really important, is it ;)? Thank you for your congratulations - I can see why it is not your favourite, but I am glad I went for the experiment, as I learnt quite a lot doing this game and had a good time making it!

SteveMcCrea: Thank you, Sir! Yes, I know that all I ever seem to do are short games (blame it on my terribly short attention span, perhaps). I do hope to one day get around to making longer games, but because I've been learning so much I'll probably keep making short games for a little while yet. Thank you for playing anyway!

mouthuvmine: And more thanks to you. I have had a good time trying to learn more and more about illustration and the like this year, and I am also quite happy with the way things are coming along. Also glad to hear you enjoyed the story, and thanks for playing and commenting!

The one problem that I see is that it might be hard to translate it to 2D.

Go and play the Pathways game GG linked to earlier in the thread ;)
