Excellent! I plan on buying this one when it comes out!

Question: 6500 lines of dialog is probably going to make this a BIG download! Will there be a CD order available for those poor people with terrible internets (ie, me)?

Otherwise it'll probably take me three straight days to download  :=

Ps, the screenshots looked a little blocky here but when I checked them out on your website they seemed quite ok. Strange - maybe it's just my browser?

You're a smarter man than I am, auriond.

I believe this to be incorrect. Well, at least the man part  ;D

If we're going to make use of the Wiki (which I think is a good idea) perhaps we should make a list of Wiki articles that need writing?

I agree with Andail that using light and shade to show depth is something to look at -the arms of the chair look particularly flat to me.

I must say it's the nicest background I've seen in ages, you've gome some talent there :)

Paint is quite fine for this style of thing.

Allow me to jot down some advice, as supported by the following image:

-When drawing straight lines at low res, try to keep your pixel lines uniform. Ie, have gradients at 1 or 2 pixels long each increment, not 1,1,1,2,1,1,1,2. This makes lines look straight, otherwise they look wonky.
-When doing rounded metals or plastics (or other reflective surfaces), try putting a midtone above the highlight again. This makes it look more rounded, as highlights on a rounded surface are quite narrow.
-Use a more direct light source - it makes highlighting and shading look more effective. Add edges with shadow or highlight tones to create depth in the image.
-Try to draw on a more neutral, low saturation backdrop. Retina searing pink is great for importing into a game, but it makes your perception of the colours less accurate, meaning what looks sexy on pink looks different ingame.
-Some things look a little pillow shaded in real life, so don't be afraid to pillow shade occasionally :)

If you're confused (Ie, you feel I've just gone and drawn a picture and not explained why or how I got here), just let me know where I lost you and I'll be happy to point by point explain it to you :)

Many thanks to all who helped, especially to Indie who has failed his university course in order to do my graphics.

Nice to see people getting their priorities right  ;)

Kiss cause baby yes(?).

I think this could have been intended to say "Kissing causes babies". Trained cryptologists wouldn't be 100% sure though, I am certain.

Please don't use 2.5x zoom - it makes the image have differently sized pixels in some browsers (like mine :P) and looks really odd/bad.

With regards to figuring out what KhrisMUC did with his edit, go into you image editing program and select the colours in his edit then see where they are on the colour picker chart. This gives you a good idea of what sort of hue/saturation/luminence you should use to achieve a similar effect to what he did. It's basic research, but you'll start to see patterns each time you look at images and you'll learn popular techniques this way.

Oh man, Pablo, I thought I was the only person in the whole world who had his PSU sitting outside the PC case. I am surprised to learn that I am wrong  :=

Oh man oh man oh man.

Seriously, like... 12 minutes ago I was saying to myself "Man, I really should try scripting up a cursor like the one in Discworld. I wonder how it is done? Maybe I should ask someone..."

12 minutes, maybe less.

That's freaking strange, and also you're the man for creating this thing that I've always wanted to have in one of my games!

Indiana Jones Demo was chosen for pick of the month June 2008. Why not and Fallen Legend?

There were completed games in that time!

Let's see when Fallen Legend (which has amazing graphics) will be included in the "Pick of the Month"?

It's not finished yet.

The Fallen Legend demo doesn't compare to the Indiana Jones FOY one, if you have played the two. One is much more "complete" than the other.

Eggie: Thanks. I should have known someone would go ahead and just say it sooner or later ;D

Ok. So there is no place for a progress here on AGS website? So here is like an old pub with old men who are talking about the old times?

Interesting judgment. Perhaps you are even trying to be insulting. Black and white photography is still a valid form of art. "But why not use colours!?  ???"

I don't want to.

"Progress" takes more form than just resolution. Game features extend well beyond this.

If you want high res games, make them yourself. Otherwise, be satisfied with what you get. Most of these games are free - it is a little pathetic to be whining about games that authors make for you to play in their free time without asking for financial compensation for their efforts.

Be grateful that such a community even exists in such a highly commercialized world, and stop complaining about things just because you have an opinion.

I hate to be a wanker when I post, but you just don't give up. It seems pretty clear that you are alone here. As ProgZmax said, if you don't like the way things are done, go somewhere else, and stop complaining to the good people here that make good games for us to play for free :(!

It's great to get feedback on a game you are working on.

But sometimes we have little feedback to give. Games as a product are often quite hard to give feedback on until you see everything working in unison - ie playing the game. Sometimes one or more features shown in the GiP thread will stand out and make us want to comment, but otherwise what is the point?

I understand that not getting feedback on things can be disheartening, but I also understand that sometimes it's better to knuckle down and just get your product out there, and then get feedback on the completed game, rather than hoping for praise of a blurb and two screenshots. Still, if you personally wish to give praise to all our budding game authors out there, good stuff :).

It seems like you're trying to give the community here a shape up. I don't understand the point of all these posts you are making. If you want something to happen, lead by example. Encourage people in the GiP thread yourself. Make a high resolution game yourself.

Just don't expect people to say "Oh, of course, yes Sir!" every time you make a comment or share your opinion.

Ahaha Stan, Stan, Stan.

Yes, the bottom screenshot looks better, and we all know why -  because you resised a screenshot designed for a certain resolution to prove your point.

Games built at 640x480 and lower resolutions have graphics designed to work at that game's resolution. Resizing this screenshot proves that resizing a screenshot makes it look terrible. It does not prove that higher resolutions are better.

Stan, my man, this horse is dead. You seem determined to keep flogging it, but I honestly cannot think of any actual evidence suggesting that you will bring it back to life.

While we're making basically pointless comparisons, take a quick comparison between the screenshots of Simon The Sorcerer 1 and then Simon The Sorcerer 3d.
Simon The Sorcerer
Simon 3d

It doesn't prove anything, really, but it's interesting to see how the graphics "advanced" with technology ;).
#2316
Keep in mind that most game authors are also game players ;).

I have a lot of games in my collection, and I can play a 2007 game at high resolution and a 1993 game with a very low resolution and be just as immersed in each one.

I respect that you enjoy higher resolution games, and I can see why. I just honestly cannot see any validity to the argument that having a higher resolution makes a game any more worthy of a player's attention :).
#2317
I would absolutely hate to see games being chosen based on their resolution. Not just because mine are all low res, either.

With regard to the B&W-->colour process, it's indeed done with adjustment layers, gradient maps, and weird things like that ;)

Holy crap, people actually use those things?

I thought they were just for show  := :o ;)
#2319
MashPotato - Thanks, I wasn't really going for a glossy look, but I'll definitely try adding more shine to the ship (not as much as your edit, but a bit :P) I appreciate the advice, as usual (I seem to say this a lot  :-[)

auriond - Thanks :D I will try for something in between and post it here so we can see how I went ;D

Edit: Alright, I've done a quick adjustment, but I think the areas of highlight are now too big and should be more focused and smaller. I'll probably have another crack at this when I am not so extremely tired :)

Man, is it just me, or am I using heaps of smileys these days? ;);D :-[:P:=
