Hey everyone,

I've been mucking around with my new favourite program - GraphicsGale - and seeing if I could get some cool characters happening.

I've got two versions - shaded and unshaded - I would like to know how good these look and what I need to improve on.

Unshaded

Shaded

Any comments would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I like it man. It be cool in a clean and simple kinda way. Good stuff.

Ooh - I like the pegleg! What a fantastic idea!

Yo Sin,

I just had a couple of quick ideas, the first is a paintover of your one, and the second is a completely re-drawn dude. Just thought I'd see if I could give you some ideas:

No worries if you don't like them.

This would work well - I'm a little disappointed its not the same angle as your second backround, but hey, stick with what you want to do.

I like that you have got waterfalls in your backrounds - waterfalls in computer games is a little thing of mine.

If I were to make a couple of suggestions, they would be to soften the texture of the sky and to make the ground texture stuff a bit softer as well. A bit of work and this will be a fantastic BG!

I didn't realise there was a waterfall in the first couple of pics, it works a whole lot better now. And yeah, that grass is much better now.

Overall I really like this style, the angle reminds me of the angles used in the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series - I've always thought it would be cool to see a purely adventure game like that.

Good effort so far, dude!

I was gonna do something crazy and awesome, but I couldn't think of anything. So that idea got the boot (I really am sorry for that one) and instead I drew this:

Its a boot. Its blue - maybe stained permanently from wading through rivers of goblin blood, maybe because it was present at a great conjuring and its very nature was altered and tainted by the magic, maybe because its made from the hide of the Killer Blue Girralephant, or maybe because I was painting a room in my house and am messy with a paintbrush. You decide.

I couldn't see any colour/size restrictions (and I double checked) but I made it tiny and with few colours coz I'm lazy, so I doubt you can disqualify me   :D.

One little bug - when you enter the second corridor from the first corridor, you cannot walk anywhere. I'm guessing this is an issue with character location not matching up with walkable areas. This means that in order to leave the corridor you need to use the manager's door, go back out into the corridor and then walk.

Other than that was smooth - certainly an interesting concept.

This is the best sprite I've seen in ages. Very very cool!

I agree with Steel Drummer and Steve McCrea that your colours are very saturated.

I am also confused by the fact that you have shadows that are darker that the outlines. I've done a paintover:

-Changed shape of eyes. I personally don't like the cross-eyed look.
-Made muscles across back of neck bigger.
-Gave arms, legs and torso more muscle tone.
-Changed colour of shadow to one lighter than the outline.
-Adjusted shape of footwear.

They certainly have a nice cartoony feel, but need a little work. Hope this helps.

Darth wins in my opinion. That moon is one of the best things I've seen, and the sun actually looks relly bright. What a fantastic effort.

Hey Accolyte - I think he is very very cool. Couple of things I thought I would change, just to see what you thought...

Notes:
-Changed horns to be smaller - I thought they looked a bit better this way.
-Changed eyes from cross eyed look.
-Changed nose to a snout.
-Changed wings - still small but a bit bigger.
-Changed arms to hands-on-hips style.
-Made him less fat, but gave him moobs.
-Made legs more lizardy...

I hope at least one of these changes gives you an idea.

Ah - I see what you guys mean.

Now that I look at how relaxed the front walkcycle is, I can see how stiff the side one is.

I'll get to work on fixing that - and hopefully making his legs less skate-y on the back one will fix that problem. Thanks guys!

On another note. I find it odd that no one has mentioned Roger....
Surely some of you have seen him?

I have to admit, Jolly Roger was my favourite part of the whole game! I laughed very hard when I saw him - what a fantastic thing to put in!!!

But I liked the whole game, the puzzles made sense, and were innovative, and the graphics were very stylish. One of the best AGS games I have ever played. Off to vote right now!

Yeah, they do them for money. But can anything with pirates get bad? I mean look at Peter Pan, now that one never gets old, no matter how many sequels and versions.

Sorry for offtopic, but it amuses me that you describe the Peter Pan series as never getting old - maybe its just my lame sense of humor. I loved Peter Pan as a kid.

Back on topic, I vote for the two trilogy idea. But not having the second trilogy as a prequel to the first trilogy.

Hi again all,

Sorry to bother the critics lounge again, but I'm rather stuck with this walkcycle I've been working on:

I usually get the legs right, then move onto body and head and then arms, however I can't even seem to get these legs right! I've created the other two cycles (forwards and sideways) and am happy with them:

However if you can see a problem with those I would also appreciate some crits.

Thanks again for your help!

He is a big improvement on the first character you posted - here's a couple of things I'd change on the front view -

- Changed eyes. You don't necessarily have to see the whites of a persons eyes. This solves the old looking one way problem. Also gave him a nose.
-Arms should come down to about mid thigh level, and in a standing pose should be more relaxed.
-Changed shape of legs, shoes and torso a bit.

Good luck!

I think all versions are done well, but HillBilly's two are my favourite. The technique you have used is very good though - perhaps just de-saturate your pallete a little - or of course use the overlay thingies.
#2940
Heh - yeah, I left those out because it is easier for me to draw his arms seperately when doing the walkcycle. This is still a concept version, so I'm still moving things around a bit.
