Double Fine's next game has been announced!
Apparently, Tim Schafer and Jack Black are going to be collaborating on "Brütal Legend," though to what extent I have no idea

http://www.1pstart.com/tim-schafer-psychonauts-jack-black-tenacious-d-brutal-legend/
There are 5 or 6 pages from a magazine in there, a very interesting read.

This is lookin' pretty good.

Thanks a bunch for your kind words, this is my first time winning a Blitz.  This week's topic is...

Evil Lair... on a budget!

The typical Evil Lair is nothing short of breathtaking.  Giant frikkin' laser beams, dangerous shark pools, underground rockets and a never-ending supply of minions.  Unfortunately, not all Evil Geniuses have an unlimited supply of money!  There are some poor megalomaniacs who must simply make do with what they have.

Perhaps the budding new entrepreneur hasn't left his mothers garage yet?
Maybe his evil throne is, in fact, a dilapidated dental chair?
He could even be building Frankenstein's laboratory, using items from a junkyard and rusty car parts

The point is, we've all seen the uber-lair in a volcano; show me a grandiose evildoer in a not-so-grandiose lair.

Guidelines - Depict an Evil Lair made on a budget
The Lair's construction must not be fully complete, though it may be operational
Tell or illustrate to us his evil scheme
Everything else is entirely up to you.

But most importantly, use your creativity!

WIP pictures are again encouraged, though far from necessary.
The competition runs from August 12th to August 21st

General Discussion / Ratatouille
Thu 12/07/2007 19:49:40
I just saw Ratatouille last night and I really dug it.  Pixar (and Brad Bird) have again succeeded where so many animated films fail; not only do you care about the characters, but they are damn fun to look at!

Has anyone else seen it?

(here's an interesting look into its production:

Alrighty folks, this week's topic is...

Masters!

Many, many games feature inexperienced or incompetent main characters.  Your job is to create someone that is a master of his or her craft.

Examples could include a burglar, Jedi Master, cook, musician, or a shrewd businessman - even janitors could work.  The possibilities are endless.  I just want his/her expertise to be conveyed in the sprite.

No size or color restrictions, just don't get unreasonable.

The competition ends on the 27th.  Have at ye!

General Discussion / Wiisure Suit Larry?
Thu 21/12/2006 20:56:05
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/12/leisure-suit-larry-wii.html

"In the new release, 'Leisure Suit Larry: Upstanding Citizen,' the Wiimote will be placed into a strap-on harness for a whole new angle on the game. Now you won't only have to get the women to agree to a little bump-and-tickle, you will also have to please them enough that they don't lose interest."

"With the Wiimote strapped firmly on your hips, you must thrust and gyrate in a "pleasing" manner. For the sexually inept, your conquest just may fail and she will fall asleep, turn the TV on or just get up and leave. Those that you satisfy will earn you libido points and help you as you go along. But enough bad reviews and the girls will be laughing and pointing at you as you walk by."

Probably fake, but evoked a nice mental image all the same.

Critics' Lounge / Hippy - New Edit
Fri 06/10/2006 23:20:32
This was originally made for the Sprite Jam, but I went a little overboard on colors and don't have a mind to reduce 100 colors from it ;)

This is a bit of a departure from my usual style in that I let loose the colors a little more, and the process was a little different. I started with a sketch and a couple reference pics from magazines, then moved on from there.  It's not supposed to be any one person in particular, but in my mind it was something of George Harrison mixed with John Lennon and John Sebastian

In particular, the hands/arms and the shirt are giving me the most grief.  Any help?  I don't plan on entering this in the jam anymore, so this is legal.  ;)

(Edit:)

Still not happy with parts of it.  See bottom post

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / "Companies"
Sat 03/09/2005 00:16:01
Behind most AGS games there is a "company" of sorts.   Behind every unfinished game, there are probably two or three.  In a vast majority of the cases, the point of these is to make the game seem professional.  However, to be perfectly frank, do they?

You set up a team, you design a crazy rox0rs game.  And then you try to nail a professional or goofy company name.  In my opinion, this seems more amatuerish than not having one to begin with.  With large organizations, dozens of employees and actual money involved, company names are quite necessary.  But with one man shows and small teams, what do they do?  Why not just say "A game made by _ and _"?   I understand that company names are necessary for things like the ATC - and that's for keeping it organized and less confusing.  But when user 'X' makes a game by himself, and comes up with a name like "Some Guy Entertainment", it does neither.  Arguably, it's more confusing and doesn't really boast of professionalism.  Perhaps people tend to get sucked in by the whole "I'm making a game" idea and they really run with it.

Still, in most cases, a player does not remember an amatuer company name at all, but rather the creators of it.  Or so I believe.  So what do they do?  What's their affect... positve, negative?

So, give me your thoughts.  Should "companies" be discouraged?  Ignored?  Fueled?

I've recently signed up with sitesled, and, to be honest, I don't know much about web design in general.  However, I managed to sketch, scan, and color until I got this:

http://www.sitesled.com/members/tiki/tiki-layout.gif

Now, I'm experimenting with that "Tiki Man's" art style - the shading, proportions, all that.  Therefore, as I continue work on this, I'd appreciate some C & C to help keep me on the right path.   Especially his left foot, around the heel.  That's been a rather large headache for me.

Obviously, the uncolored bits are the unfinished bits, and the boxes and such will be links.  Besides graphical C & C, perhaps somebody could give advice on the placing of these links and text?  It seems a bit jumbled to me, but that may be unavoidable.

Perhaps I was wrong in submitting this before it was finished, but I currently don't see the error in doing so.  Regardless - thanks in advance!  I really do need some help here!

The Easter Beagle!

Eh, yeah.  An annual holiday thread.  So, any plans for Easter?  Visit Grammy?  Sleep through it?  Get drunk as a baby?

Personally, I'm eating plenty of chocolate, visiting family, and staying away from school.

Critics' Lounge / MAGS Character Animation
Mon 15/11/2004 01:08:06
Well, I figured it's time I got off my lazy bum and made me a game!  Or, rather, made you guys a game.  Cutting to the chase, help me a bit with this animation...

Be on the lookout for Titan Terry ... coming soon!

Edit:  Newer version...

You read the subject, foo'!  Lets hear some backstories!

As for mine:  There was a 'TikiTikiMan' in an early Crash Bandicoot game, and I just randomly thought of it as a name one day.   I used to spell it with two 'k's, but now use one.  The two 'k's still haunt me daily.  I had used to be called 'RJD' and 'Chicken' (heh, OSC) before being Tiki, or TikiTikiMan.  There have also been numerous numbers in my name, such as TikiTikiMan13.

Critics' Lounge / C&C my new Walk Cycle, Foo'!
Sun 15/08/2004 20:53:08
hello, hello.  It's been awhile since I've made a walk cycle, so I figured I should create one and post it for you all to devour.   The legs, I'm content with, but the arms look slightly off.  Any suggestions, paintovers, etc is appreciated.

Its supposed to be me, by the way.

Yup, those arms are off.  Perhaps I should add some head bobbing, as well?

First off, I understand that movie Sprite Jams have been used before...and that this most definately isn't 'Teh most 1nn0vative Sprite Jam evar!!1!"  But, it should prove amusing none the less.
The topic: *drum roll please*

Funny movie sprite!

You must sprite a funny character/object/whatever from a movie.  Now, this ain't no background blitz, so I won't force you to make a background, but it could possibly help other people recognize the movie.  Now, by funny, it could be something that was supposed to make you laugh, or it could be uninentional (Yoda fighting Dooku comes to mind....) Its also recommended that you choose a movie that the majority of us would be familiar with...

Now, the restrictions are as follows
1.  Resolution: No restriction, just don't go too big
2. Colors: 256

Real Quick Example:

Eh, just a quickie Spaceballs referance.   Those of you who haven't seen the movie, you must think I'm very strange.

Happy spriting, and no flaming me or each other please!

*Edit:  for some of us its still July 14th, and the contest hasn't officially 'started' yet, but we are going with the forum's time

*Another Edit:  Thanks DM, for inspiring this idea

Critics' Lounge / SCI0 Drawing - C & C
Sun 23/05/2004 21:08:26
Well, I made an attempt to draw a Monolith Burger Drive-Through sign, SQ3 style, but it doesnt look all that much like Space Quest 3.   Can I have some C an' C to help improve this?

Edit: It is meant to be seen from inside the Aluminum Mallard, hence the two grey bars

Advanced Technical Forum / Moving Ego Head
Fri 07/05/2004 20:20:22
Is there anyway to make the ego's head follow the cursor while he's idle?  I suppose I could use regions, but that could get very complicated.  Are there any easier ways to do this?  Are there any at all?

I have recently been working on Roger Wilco for my upcoming (and fairly secretive) Space Quest game.  I whipped these up last night, and they could use some C & C.  I especially dislike The front view, but don't really know what to change.  Help!

5 - 8 - 04
I've added a walk cycle.  I dont have much experience with making these, and I need some C & C pretty badly.  I'm not even sure if these are in the right order.  Please help correct this so I can continue on with shading!   Thanks in advance.

AGS Games in Production / Black Bag
Sat 26/07/2003 01:10:53
I'm currently working on a game called black bag.  I know I know, dumb name, huh?  there is some meaning to it though.  A black bag job is a job where you have to sneak into a building or something of the like and get info illegally.  Metal Gear and Splinter Cell comes to mind....Ovbiously, my game is something like the Metal Gear series and Splinter Cell, only not nearly as dark or serious.

basic story: you (main char currently nameless) work for the USSS (US Secret Service), and you guard the president of the US.   One day,  the pres is launching dookies and you're waiting outside the door.  You decide to get a quick drink at a nearby water fountain.  While you're quenching your thirst, you hear the door lock and a muffled scream.  A window crashes and foot steps die away.  An alarm sounds and your are accused of helping the kidnapppers, er, adultnappers cause you had the keys to the door.  You escape from the White house and live with a freind in the CIA.

thats all for now, sorry if its a little vague.  I have most of the animations done, but i can't put them online.  See, I did my work on my laptop, which is fairly old and can't go online.  It has no burner but a disk drive.  The only PC that does go online is my bros and i only get an hour a day if I'm real lucky.  It has no disk drive, but a burner.   Yeah,  it sucks.  I'll get a new PC soon and will be able to show you guys pics and demos and junk soon.  Right now I'm making sure I can do a game like this by making a short game in my house that requires the stuff i'll need in black bag.  More info whenever.
