General Discussion / Re:Celebrity Birthdays

Hmm... Gene Kelly, Ray Park (Darth Maul), Jay Mohr, and... blah. My birthday also sucks.

Outkast? Yeah, that song is insanely overexposed. Still, I think it's catchy and it's pretty damn left field compared to other chart toppers like Britney, Justin, Eminem, etc. I think it's good to have an interesting, original song become popular. Sure, it's annoyingly overplayed now, but I think that it will make for much better nostalgia than anything by 50 Cent.

Techno is a very impressive SOUNDING genre, but it lacks in song writing. Personally, I'd like to hear more Techno that's actually written in a more traditional way. Y'know, not so repetitive, with chord changes, verses, chori. TMBG's "Man, It's So Loud In Here" is sort of like that, actually, although it's not a very complicated song.
Now Metal, for all it's angst, I feel generally lacks edge. I'd like to see some more twisted creativity in presenting such dark music. See Mr. Bungle, or Mike Patton in general.

Personally, I think metal musicians try way to hard. A happy-sounding song with the right lyrics can be much more effectively depressing.

I'm straight and I'd do either of them.

err... if I was gay. And closer to their respective ages.

Sexist.

My point stands-- which do you think is a more effective thing to say, or at least honest? "Don't say gay!" or "There's nothing wrong with gay people."

General Discussion / Re:America

I don't know if it's such a huge problem... I mean...

Someone from Mexico is NORTH AMERICAN and MEXICAN.
Someone from Canada is NORTH AMERICAN and CANADIAN.
Someone from USA is NORTH AMERICAN and, for lack of a better word, AMERICAN.

I don't think it's so bad... So, people in other North or South American countries will have to throw in the "North" or "South" bit to be specific. I can't think of a situation where someone would need to tell someone else "I am from either North or South America" anyway.
Some countries would be HAPPY to never mention what continent they're on...

I think gay is a perfectly cromulent term to describe someone or someone that's flamboyant, maybe, even though that doesn't pertain to all gays, but it's less of a stretch then gay's last change of meaning. (happy)
As a synonym for anything bad, dumb, or broken, though, it's pretty moronic. But there's no point in scolding people for using it like that. It's only a SYMPTOM of bigotry, if anything. Like, what's the point of scolding Hitler for saying "Jews suck"?

And I think Eric's referring to the word "j00" as in "I H4X0R J00"

Just recently my DVD player stopped working for no reason I could percieve... I searched around and ended up downloading this: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358
It seems to be able play my DVDs without any whining.

Minimi: I dunno, I'd say poker is half-gambling at least. I mean, it doesn't matter how much skill you have, if you get a useless hand you're screwed!

Well, his budgets kept getting bigger, for one thing. I don't know, his earlier films seemed a lot less concerned with the "rules" of film and storytelling and were wilder excersizes in cult cinema. They were sort of anti-films.
I think his progression has more to do with growing up and getting older, actually. He was probably a bad example. All of his films are really creative, just in different ways.
Anyway, I agree that education is something you need to properly express your creativity. But I also think it can kill your soul if it doesn't rub well with you. So it all depends on HOW you learn.

What about Peter Jackson? His oeuvre seems kinda backwards.

You guys keep brainstorming... This is gonna be the best Mardi Gras ever.

I don't think the Batman films were narrated at all (the first two anyway.) So, it's all good.

Surprise and suspense. Like in DOOM, how whenever you turn a corner you know there could be a bunch of monsters jumping out at you. Or the end of Monkey Island 2, where LeChuck randomly appears in the corridors.
Both of these examples are illustrated with creepy graphics and music, of course.

A full costume shaped like a penis... or a costume FOR your penis?
