Hi.

It seems, that the only reason I start threads here is because I have problems with my Acer-Vista laptop nowadays :D But I've found this to be a great source of know-how on this matter, and after all, we all learn when we read these threads, and I reckon there are people who are interested in computers as much as I am or even more.

Well anyway. Last night, out of nowhere, my computer just shut down. This has never happened before, so I was a bit alarmed. I thought maybe it was because the battery ran out, but I checked, and the power cord was attached and the battery was full. Also, it should give a notice. My brother suggested a power outage, but how would that make it shut down, when there's a battery attached too?

Usually when there's a fatal error, on the next start-up, the computer goes to BIOS and notifies it, suggesting starting in safe-mode. This time it started just normally, as if nothing had happened.

The thing is, it happened again. This time after some, 15 minutes. I was watching a... krhm... movie on the internet at the time, and I thought to myself; could it have been a virus that was causing this? Well, Avast Home Edition went through the whole HD during the night and found nothing.

Notice: it went through it during the night without a stop, but while watching the "movie" the computer shut itself down twice without me doing anything! And I didn't have any powersaving settings applied.

Today I've been trying to configure spybot, thinking I downloaded some malware from the movie, but it keeps getting jammed and freezing my computer. I had to uninstall it in safe-mode, and now I'm currently re-installing it to see if that is the problem... Still, spontaneous shut downs are not that fun. And I'm clueless. Any idea what it coul be?

It's time I turn to my loyal mates again. This time in hope for finding some guidance with the German language, as I'm yet again translating a book, only this time it's not from English but from German. Not I'm pretty sure there's a spelling error where I'm stuck at the moment, and I'd really need to figure out what the author meant with the sentence. The text is pretty easy, though the sentence is rather long, but the problem lies only in the first 5 words of it. Here:

I can't find the word Auwiesen anywhere, of course. In den might suggest to a plural and a dativ form, so I figured it might be Auswiesen, as a plural from of a noun unknown to me. Now it's not Ausweis, which would mean an ID card and would not make sense, and... well. I really don't know what it is. I know Auwiesen is not a word, but what is the word he meant?

The novel is the Abschied von Sidonie by Erich Hackl, and it has come out in English too as Farewell Sidonia

It's a pretty important translation for me, as it's from German, and there's basically no pre-contract on this, as I've got no experience to show on German, except for the 11 years of studies, so they'll be seeing how I do, and then deciding. I'd love to get my foot in the door, if you know what I mean :)

Well, thanks anyway.

General Discussion / King of pop RIP thread
Thu 25/06/2009 23:19:02
I just came home, turned on my computer, and this news popped up on a newsfeed server: Michael Jackson has passed away, the cause of death, according to his father is heart attack. he was supposed to hold 50 more concerts this year, but apparently this is not going to happen.

I'm so stunned right now, I really don't know what to say. Usually when celebrities die, I don't give a rats ass, but this time I feel like a new page has been turned in the book of history, somehow...

General Discussion / Body painting anyone?
Fri 22/05/2009 15:51:18
No images yet, sorry.

But that's about to change, I hope. I'm here to ask, if you have any experience, because I myself find this very exciting. And me and my girlfriend are going to a rock festival next month, and we were thinking about spending the weekend naked dressed only in paint.

I know there are a lot of creative artists around here. What would you think would be the best type of paint/colour to use, and would it be bloody expensive/ what do you use/ do you find it erotic. If I can find the money, I'll definately post the pictures of me and my gf here, painted up as what ever we think is appropriate. I'm not sure she's ready to be completely naked though, you know with all the people around, though you see all those nudists everywhere. I jus happen to like the painted side of it somehow, don't know why. Well, it's a life long dream of mine, and it might be coming true, if I can find some proper paint, and some booze up in my veins :D It'll be a weekend to remember.

How about you? Do you do bodypaint? would you like to? What do you use?

Hiya.

I was wondering, which program do you guys use for brownsing pdf files? I used to have adobe acrobat, but it got screwed up all the time with the update, so I changed to Foxit.

Foxit had a creator too, and it was open source, which was great. The thing was just, that everytime I'd try opening a pdf file, it'd just open a foxit.exe task manager->processes. They were all hidden somewhere. Bloody annoying. So I uninstalled it and installed Pdf-viewer.

Pdf-viewer seems really plain, so it might just work. But what it does is the same, as with foxit.

I'd recommend foxit to everyone, but for some reason I'm having real difficulties reading pdf-files with my new vista-computer.

Just thought if anyone had the same thing. I really need a pdf reader, as all my musical scores are in pdf-format, and at the moment I can't read any of them.

General Discussion / 2009 - The most expected!
Wed 18/03/2009 14:00:08
Hello. I know I'm a bit late, it's already March, but in a global scale, the year has only just begun.

So what do you expect fromt he year 2009? New albums from your favourite bands? New books perhaps? Women? Candy? Work opportunities? New XBoX-games? Is there anything in this year to look forward to. I know there is for me, already has been actually, that's where I got the idea for this thread.

I preordered a record, Pure reason Revolution - Amor Vincit Omnia, and got it a week ago. Now I just pre-ordered the new album of Scandinavian Music group. Apparently more bands are releasing more good music this year.

I also have a chance of moving away from here, also working on two books aside from the one I did last year, so that's a pretty nice opportunity. I'm mostly happy about the prospects of this year, though I know there's still a long way to go and a lot of stress coming too :)

So, share!

I'm sorry, I just find it bloody brilliant. everyone who has seen the Wall-E movie has probably heard the song that plays during the end credits. It got nomitaned for an Oscar, and they requested Peter Gabriel to performhis song on air.

However, after first agreeing, Mr. Gabriel heard that the producers would only give him 65 seconds to perform a 5+ minute song, so he declined. There's really no respect given to movie music even though it's a big part of it, most won't just realise it while watching.

Well, the Oscars are a laugh anyway. But my respect to Mr. Gabriel just got through the roof, so kudos to him for showing those idiots.

http://www.musicnewsnet.com/2009/02/peter-gabriel-drops-out-of-oscar-show.html

Having said that, I'm going to be watching the gala anyway probably. Depends on if my girlfriend allows it or not, as it is on at 01:00 am. Anyone watching it?

General Discussion / A laptop?
Wed 11/02/2009 15:16:55
Heips peeps.

I'm a quitter. At least I feel like it now that I'm thinking of getting a laptop. It's because of the HD and all the 20Gb of stuff I lost there. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check here http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=36649.0

I'm going to be starting work soon, and I'm going to be needing a computer I can rely on. That means, nothing special, just the fact that it stays together. So, I'll be probably using XP or Ubuntu on it, uninstalling Vista the minute I get it. I couldn't find any reasonably priced used ones, well basically the price difference isn't big enough to swing that way.

Now as I'm just starting work, you'll understand that I don't have a lot of money. My dad promised to help me if the price stays reasonable. I'm thinking below 500€, and that's a lot for me, i'll have to take a loan anyway.

Some, 6 months ago I spent quite a while checking out kaptops for my friends, and basically everyone ended up with an Acer. It still seems to be rather cheap, really considering, that the prices they ask are hellish. I might not need 17'' of scrrenage, 15'' would be enough, I'd prolly use my monitor anyway. But I ain't getting a mini-laptop either. I'd also need it to run some programs unlike the one I'm using now, which has only 393Mb of ram. Most laptop seem to still have 1Gb RAM even though everyone knows that's not enough for Vista. 2Gb seems to almost double the price >:(

I was wondering, if you could help me find a decent laptop that could handle me, and later on, my work, my music-recording and whatnot?

-Tuomas--

EDIT: I noticed there's a new ACER Extensa 5630Z 15.4"/T3200/4GB/160GB/Vista Home Premium for sale at verkkokauppa.com. It's got a dual core T3200 2Gb processor, 4Gb DDR2 RAM, 160Gb 5400rpm SATA HD, 15.4" WXGA 1280x800 screen, Intel GMA X4500HD gfx-card, 6-cell battery, Intel High Definition Audio soundcard, ExpressCard/54? (what's this?). Plus Vista of course. All this for 499€, that's 450 £ or 650$

What do ya think?

I'm pretty upset.

I have an appointment at the "hair dresser's" tomorrow, and I've been looking for examples of the hair that I'd want on the internet. 70's short hair, or something like the 60's, say, the Beatles/the Monkees. But there's really no such oppportunity for men there. You see, it's been a while since I went looking for clothing instructions to have my mom make me pants etc. The same problem:

There are only like 5 images that originate back to those times and a really, you know, vintage. And I've started hating retro because of this. Everything made in the 2000s is considered retro, and when you search for 60s clothes you get an image of Jessica Simpson. And all the retro is just so stereotypical. No ordinary clothes or anything. Every search from the 60s is an exact replica of Austin Powers, and that's not how I want it to be.

I want a bloody greasy short hair-do and tv-screen sunglasses... but there aren't any. All that's left are the John Lennon round glasses and something some fag wears in a High School Musical. A big whote smile, a huge jaw and Christiano Ronaldo hair... not really 70s, is it?

Damnit!

damnit. Hi there again. I seem to be starting these threads all the time. But this time it's my own computer, and I'm afraid I lost everything.

The thing is, I turned on the computer on monday morning to buy some tickets to the Jethro Tull show on march here, and it worked fine, then I went off to uni. When I got back, a few hours later, the computer wouldn't proceed from the BIOS, the stage, where it checks the memory. This sometimes happens, but usually it has helped, when I reboot. Now it just wouldn't check the memeory and wouldn't proceed.

In the end it made these cracking sounds in my PSU, and the front panel started beeping. I opened the case, and noticed that my ATA 133 disk accelerator (if that's what it's called, the black square chip there) was all black and hot, and I could smell smoke. After that nothing worked.

I figured, it's a problem with the Mobo, so I tried moving things like my PSU, my AMD processor, and my HD to another computer that my friend brought here just today. I was unable to run XP from my HD and basically the only thing I could do was to put the original HD of the new computer set and instal XP on it. Then I added my old HD to the IDE1 as device1 and as slave, but running the XP from the device0, the original HD, it recognises my C-drive and my E-drive, but my H-drive, which had all my music, texts, compositions, AGS projects, images, photos, my work, everything, it can't read. It just states "this drive has not been formatted, would you like Windows to format it now?". But I don't want it formatted, I want to get my files back.

Booting from the old drive, my genuine drive that I transfered tothis and tried as master at first leads nowhere. My keyboard works fine in BIOS, figuring out from where to boot the machine, but as it boots from HDD-0, that is my older HD, it goes to the well known screen where it says windows wasn't shut down properly, and I should choose between normal startup or safe-mode, but I can't select anything the cursor won't move, so it starts up in the basic mode after 30 seconds and all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor.

What's there to do? I really can't afford to lose any of my things there, OK, 25Gb of music isn't that much, but all my work and photos, my music and my writings, and especially my AGS project that's further done than anyone knows... If anyone could help me, please, be so kind. I'm running out of ideas.

Oh, and one thing... setting jumpers on my HDs, what does the "Cable Select" mean exactly?

Hiya.

I'm sorry I'm troubling you guys with my computer problems... But you see, it's since I got a girlfriend, and her family too, I've been mostly solving computer related problems... Basically so much, I should prolly start taking money for it, or even better, start my own business with this experience.

This time it's with XP, not with Vista, always windows though.

Problem: this computer she has back at her family was not connected to the internet for several months because it just weren't. So, experimenting with it, as you should guess, it started updating the Windows itself. It took quite a while, there were 16 updates to download and install, but finally it was finished.

Now after installing all of them it wanted to reboot, as always. I pressed okay, and it started again, only, this time with no visible desktop. No icons, no start-menus or quick-menus, no nothing. I pressed ctrl-alt-del, and it claims that explorer.exe is running. Afaik when I turn that program off, this sort of thing happens. But now it's supposed to be running, yet, there's no visible desktop, the background image is there though as it should be.

I tried running Windows on that other trouble-thing mode, (don't know the english name), but ended up with a black screen with only the texts on every corner indicating the mode I'm using. Oh, and no, the last working setup of Windows that I tried to run ends up the same, just the BG image. Has anyone had a problem like this? I don't know what to do, I really couldn't go installing XP again. and what could be causing this? could it be, that I installed 16 updates at once and not all separately, and why would that happen?

thanks for the help in advance, if there's any coming :)

Hiya. I just thought... might there be someone here, who's managed to run The Big Red Adventure http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/810/Big+Red+Adventure,+The.html with the Dosbox 0,72.

I had a long fight, and finally got the LP-mousepad configured, and with CPU usage at almost 0%, it runs ok, except for the fact that I can't change the language... It's Italian. I just thought if anyone has tried it, how did you get past that?

General Discussion / R.I.P. Pekka Pohjola
Thu 27/11/2008 21:35:11
This is a sad moment to everyone who has ever listened to music. I usually don't like RIP threads, but here's a bassist, that basically made the grounds to me liking music and has been one of the most influental composers and players of bass, grand piano and violin in the Finnish music scene.

Here's thinking of a person, who's cooperated with such great names as Jukka Tolonen, Mike Oldfield and Frank Zappa and was the founding member of a Progressive rock classic, Wigwam, here performing with great Finnish musicians like Vesa Aaltonen (Tasavallan Presidentti) Pekka Pohjola Group - Ensimmäinen Aamu The name translates to "The First Morning".

On this occasion, I'll probably be ripping all my Pekka Pohjola cds to mp3 and listening to them on my mp3 player while I ride the train tomorrow morning.

General Discussion / Cosplay tips
Mon 10/11/2008 21:43:43
Hi. I finally convinced my girlfriend to try on some suits. well, actually it was her idea, and she got excited, because she's pretty handy with clothing and all that, always fixing my pants and jackets that have holes in them from crawling around the playground.

Anyway, she said, that she didn't know any anime/manga to copy, and she thought she'd want my opinion before making the outfits for herself. Also, she didn't know, if there was more to cosplaying than just dressing up. I told it was ok just to wear stuff, no need to LARP etc :) But frankly, I only ever watched Urusei Yatsura, Love Hina, Pokemon and didn't read any, so I'm not the best to suggest stuff. And I promised her links to pictures. So I was wondering if any of you could help me finding clothes probably suitable for a long haired blonde with a nice figure. Oh, and she also said there's no limit to the shortness of the skirt ;) Oh, and she said she'd make some for me too, so I should start imagining myself as a mangaboy :D

General Discussion / wlanapi.dll?
Wed 29/10/2008 13:54:43
Hi, I moved some time ago to a new city. So cofiguring my internet I started thinking that there might be a w-lan somewhere in the neighbourhood unguarded when in my last apartment there was none, so I mistakenly installed my D-Link USB wireless thingie. Couldn't find any, but now my computer keeps beeping on startup with this message:

QuoteThe procedure enry point apsInitialize could not be located in the dynamic link library wlanapi.dll

I had this before in my old apartment but was able to fix it, or push it aside, but I can't remember how I did it. It doesn't seem serious, but it's really loud and annoying, the beep everytime I start up my computer.

I've googled it a lot, and it seems, that the problem is with XP SP3 having an updated wlanapi.dll, while the D-Link still uses the old one. So I'd have to find a system restore point months back or get an update. I tried updating the D-Link driver, and I tried installing an SP3 version of the dll and also a SP2 version of the dll. microsoft.com seems to have a lot of information about the same problem with Vista, but Iäve had no help there either. I'd just like to get the problem gone, seeing as even uninstalling the D-link program+driver didn't take the beeping away. Anybody have any more suggestions?

General Discussion / Vista & admin rights?
Sat 18/10/2008 19:46:41
Hiya

I'm here at my girlfriend's, trying to fix her laptop. She has an amazing skill of making a mess of everything computer related she touches. well, I noticed I can't really get anything that I want done with her account, even though it says I'm supposed to have admin rights to this. On XP it was pretty simple, and yeah, though I'm not that familiar with Vista yet, I think I know what I'm doing, but don't know how to get the Vista convinced. What I need is to be able to modify the interface as the admin, and then create another account for my girlfriend for her own computer, so that she couldn't break it anymore. I know there are programs that help you tweak the rights somehow, but that seems silly. I thought, if anyone knew how this could be done, they might want to share, ok? Please, it gets really annoying getting the error message all the time. I just want to get this thing in order and maje sure my girlfriend doesn't break it again. Thanks, if you can help me at all.

General Discussion / Midi keyboards
Mon 13/10/2008 18:49:47
Hiya

I've got the boom to buy an instrument again, and I was thinking, this time I could go to a cheap, decent midi-keyboard. But, I really don't know where to begin.

1. A midi keyboard... is that a thing that only plays chip-tunes, or can I get a nice sound from one with some samples?

2. It should be easy to plug into my computer.

Well, that's about it. I don't suppose anyone would have any suggestions?

General Discussion / BDSM = happiness!
Wed 27/08/2008 19:52:14
"An unusual sex survey has found that Australians who enjoy bondage and discipline are not damaged or dangerous, and might even be happier than those who practise "normal" sex." Such is the quote from The Age, Australia. The survey was made asking 20000 couples about their life and sexlife separately, it was done by the university of NSW(North South Wales) in Australia.

Link

QuoteThe findings showed that it was more common among gay, lesbian and bisexual people, and that participants were more likely to have been more sexually adventurous in other ways.

"However, they were no more likely to have been coerced into sexual activity and were not significantly more likely to be unhappy or anxious," said Prof Richters, author of the book Doing It Down Under.

In fact, men who take part may be happier, with results showing they score significantly lower on a scale of psychological distress than other men.

QuoteProf Richters says the findings go against professional views of BDSM.

"People with these sexual interests have long been seen by medicine and the law as, at best, damaged and in need of therapy and, at worst, dangerous and in need of legal regulation," she said.

There was also an assumption, mostly among the general public, that people involved in BDSM were sexually deficient in some way, "and need particularly strong stimuli such as being beaten or tied up to become aroused".

She said she hoped the results would help change these stereotypes.

About time. I need to show this to my girlfriend. Even though I am pretty happy at the moment, if you know what I mean ;) But one could always use more. I like the idea int he picture there on that site.

Apparently it's worth publishing since I saw this thing on every newspaper here today! Also, now that I've been alone a bit more, I've been enjoying some spanking videos myself. You should try it too. It makes you happy, and doesn't mean you're sexually deficient! I read this little booklet they were selling at the psychology section of the book store, and it also encouraged to spank a bit, with an open hand. Some might be afraid of the sound it makes, but I like how my flatmates can hear it all. Damn, if I had the chance to be molested like a dead pig, I'd sure as hell take it. That's how happy I am with my life!

Why am I posting this? Because I'm happy, not bored, as you would assume.

General Discussion / Free music all around!
Sat 02/08/2008 22:53:39
Hiya.

Some of you know me as someone who spends all his social security moneys on CDs and vinyls, the rest are just ignorant. Now lately, well, I hang around at musical webistes and all that stuff and get a hold of a lot of music, as samples, or asin the case I'm bringing up here, free albums.

I've been doing reviews on some prog CDs for a while, stopped it there because I didn't have any time, but along the while www.prog4you.com sent me some 15 cds, some of which are total spot on recordings, though promo versions of course.

Now for a while I've been thinking of starting up my pityful blog again, just to rate those albums that may not have found a label/publisher yet and are, as we'd all like, free on the internet. I'm not sure if I can be bothered right now, but in the future. Well, I've found some great stuff as well as some less good.

I was wondering, do people here welcome free music with open arms or do you mostly just get the mainstream stuff? I know this has been up in another sense before, but I thought I'd love to bring some out. I first reviewed Chrysalide albums, there's 3 of them, free for download. Not very good unless you like acoustic and simplistic French folk.

I also found out about Rain and Northwind to mention a few.... I've yet to listen to these and well, a lot more. There are a lot, and I myself would be interested in hearing what ever genre there might be. That includes the couple of splendid albums we've got from members around here. I'd probably let them tell about them themselves on this thread. I was considering a list for all of us, and should it so happen, that this thread would get popular, it could then be moved up there. However, we all know, that no-one reads that forum and everyone reads this one. So I'll start with a couple, with a summary to follow and to sum up the genre so it's not a hit and miss. Those three there and

Scott Mosher - Virtuality - the link lists all the album of which the first from 2001 is now free of charge.
QuoteExperimental, progressive music that runs the gamut from heavy progressive metal to tranquil, atmospheric soundscapes.

Hidria Spacefolk - HDRSF-1 - This CD I own already, great ambience for those who like music like Tangerine Dream or Ozric Tentacles!

Tuna Laguna - It's a Fudge - A Norwegian instrumental indie rock band, very interesting. Also some songs from the newer album.

the Pax Cecilia - Blessed Are The Bonds - Pretty nice ambient metal group from the Big Apple.

Sickoakes - Wedding Rings & Bullets In The Same Golden Shrine www.sickoakes.com/ - again instrumental, this time from Sweden, post-rock / indie with a lot of woodwinds and brass + overdriven guitars at times.

Loss of a Child - a UK math rock group with a lot of free stuff (albums) and really nice tunes. (myspace alert).

These are a bit limited genre-wise, but i'm sure you know some more that you might want to or are allowed to share with me, and everyone else who appreciates the idea of free art forms. also, the thread is open to discussion on the bands mentioned and the ways of presentation. Just, bear with me and enjoy with me, right :D If it really seems worth it, I might even pick up that idea of the blogging accident reprise. Thanks! And enjoy...

General Discussion / A multi-core processor?
Wed 23/07/2008 10:37:48
Hi there again.

I was consulted by my friend last night. He's thinking of getting a new computer and is between a laptop and the normal desktop ones, and wants me to help him because I usually do just that. He'd be taking the old one to their band's training facilities for recordig purposes.

Last night he asked me if I knew why the other computer he had been looking at had a 1,7 GHz processor and the other had a 1,7 GHz dual-core processor. He couldn't tell me the exact names, but they were both AMD. I told him, that as far as I know, a multi-core one is better, but he caught me by asking "how exactly are the better?"

It's actually a funny thing. I googled for hours about mutli-cores and normal single core processors and all I could find were discussions at forums like

"what different about this new technology?"
"It's a lot better, that's all you need to know"

"Does a dual core mean, that I get 3,2GHz one to work at 3,2 + 3,2 = 6,4?"
"It doesn't multiply the power, so that's not worth talking about"

But no-one would give an answer, just noobs specualting and people tellig them what it isn't doing. So I basically know what a mutli-core doesn't do, say, raid a Pendoline-train while it's moving or blow the whole universe up, but I really don't know what's the use.

Some claimed it'd help with games that could handle it, keeping the background processes ran through the other core and the game through the other, but still no-one mentionend what the benefit of that was.

I'm used to getting good answers from here, so please, if someone knew why they were better, if that really is the truth, and why my friend should pay more for one of those? Yeah, he uses the computer to play games that need a bit more power, I guess.
