I appreciate the flattering (though disturbing) visual imagery. :P

It's romantic! It's threatening!
It's threat-mantic!

Yeah, seriously, let us know where you're stuck and someone will give you a hand.

It's a present for Kenichi Nishi, who wrote and designed most of those games.

Have you seen the interviews with him on Eegra?
It's pretty interesting stuff.

How can you not dig this?

The only thing is, I keep reading stuff like this.
QuoteLittle Mac from Punch-Out [...] and many more of Nintendo's most forgettable characters are all on this island with you.

Little Mac? Forgettable?
Pah!

I've never played anything from Skip before, but Newtonica looks... interesting, from what I've seen on Eegra.

Also, that's a great picture you drew there, Kinoko.

If you backside isn't too sore from the friction of everybody's lips, permit me to join in. ;)

'Tis very cool stuff. Congrats to everyone involved.

Unfortunately, I didn't finish it.
I got stuck and couldn't figure out what I had to do.

More delays! Yay!

As you may or may not have figured out, the help I asked for a while back is being provided by a certain Ghost.

I say "being provided", but that's not really the case, as he has disappeared for three weeks.

He did manage to finish his work, and upload it just before he left, but MediaFire hates me and won't let me get to it. >:(

So... the release date is now going to be a couple of days after Herr Ghost returns, whenever that may be.
End of the month, I guess.

Anyway, played with it a bit and wasn't that impressed. Felt rather Firefox-like.

Quote from: OneDollar on Thu 04/09/2008 23:23:02There were two things I did like though, the incognito mode (that doesn't write to the history and deletes cookies and temporary files when you close it) and the way you can resize some text input boxes.

Of course, if you install all of them it'll slow you right down.
But that's what I like about add-ons, they're completely customizable.

Chrome may be flashy, but there's a lot of stuff there that I won't use, and a lot of stuff I do use is missing.
The only add-on I've kept after trying all of those from the above two pages is the Download Statusbar, and I already had that months ago.

Speaking of add-ons, does anyone know of one that un-blurs enlarged pictures in FireFox 3?
That's the only thing stopping me from upgrading right now.

What I meant by "main selling points" is what they've got on the prog's front page, that are there to grab your attention and "sell" the product, which are pretty gimmicky.

Quote from: Akatosh on Wed 03/09/2008 12:52:12
It's a free browser that obviously tracks how often you visit which page, and it's made by a profit-oriented corporation that mainly subsides on showing people advertising. This may just be my paranoia acting up, but does anyone ELSE smell a rat here?

Heh. That reminds me of why I never used GMail.

And now that you've reminded me of that, I'm thinking maybe I'm going to uninstall Chrome, too.
At least until it's a bit older, and there's a general verdict on it. :-\

Edit: And uninstalling it is an experience, too.
It just popped up a little confirmation box, and when I clicked "yes" it opened IE (despite the fact that I was using FF at the time) to this page.
It didn't tell me it had successfully uninstalled or anything, so I had to check my list of programs to see if it had actually gone, but it still gave me a feeling that it left something behind.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'm currently doing an Ad-Aware scan just to check.

With a name like Chrome, I was expecting it to be somewhat less garish. :-\

Also, the main selling points seem to be pretty gimmicky.
Why do I need to be reminded what my favourite sites look like if they're my favourites? So I can see if they've been updated? That's what an RSS feed is for.

Plus, no adblock and screwed-up image scaling?
I've installed it, and I might test it out from time to time, but for now I'll stick with my good old FireFox 2.0.

I just purchased a copy of DITR from the adventure shop. When i try to run the game, all i see is a black screen. I'm able to hear the background music, and also able to independently run the opening video clip named "Atropos". But I can't see anything when I run the game.

Do this.

Well, this thread has certainly been... enlightening.

I personally can't see any of the big stuff, like paedophilia or bestiality, ever being socially acceptable.
But then again, they probably said that about interracial sex a hundred years ago, and now an asian fetish* is possibly the most common thing in the world, next to foot fetishes.

The robo-fetish stuff does bring up certain questions, though.
One could argue that, until robots reach a certain level of intelligence, they are merely objects, like sex toys.
Therefore consent is not an issue, and will not become an issue until AI tech has advanced to a point where they can consider all the moral and social implications of their actions to a degree large enough that they can be held responsible for their own decisions.
But then, is that not the point behind paedophilia and bestiality being illegal, that the subject is not morally or emotionally developed enough to give informed consent?

* I don't like using that term. How come, if you like black girls or white girls or indian girls or whatever, it's just a preference, but if you like asian girls, it's a fetish? Nevertheless, I'm not sure how else to describe it within contexts such as these.

A couple of Vegas roach traps couldn't hurt. Or release a whole bunch of these bastards in your house.
I was also going to suggest some of those buggers, but then I though because he has a phobia for insects he wouldn't like a bunch of centipedes (while not insects) running around his house ;D.

He could always bring in lizards to eat the centipedes.
And then Chinese Needle Snakes to eat the lizards.
And then gorillas to eat the snakes.
Then, when wintertime rolls around, the gorillas will simply freeze to death.

I'll take that as a 'no', then.

Okay, no worries, I'll go back to doing it the long way round.

I never thought I'd see a Little Nemo-reference in an adventure game.

You mean the mallet, right?
I think that may be more of a coincidence.
Of course, I don't know for sure.

If that's not what you meant, then I obviously missed it.

Sorry.
I'm a pain in the arse, I know. ::)

Anyway, forget the previous posts in this thread for now, because I just made it a whole lot worse and I don't know how.

Now none of the cursor switching/statusbar labelling is happening at all.
I'm just constantly stuck in Lookat mode regardless of what may or may not be under the mouse.

Could somebody please take a look at this and tell me where I've gone wrong?
Thanks in advance.

    }
}

My untrained eye really can't see why this shouldn't work.
(Different room to the one above, by the way. This one's the starting room.)

Also, when I open a GUI, the hotspots still register from behind it. I've searched around, and the most I can find is "just use if (GUI.GetAtScreenXY(mouse.x, mouse.y)==null)", but I've used that with both of the hotspot registering functions (mode switching and statusbar thingy), and it doesn't stop either of them happening (when they work at all, that is).

Also also, is there a quick and easy way of declaring all Walkpoints (0-5) false without having to do them all separately?

Any ideas?
Thanks heaps.
#217
You might be right, there.

There are three exit-point hotspots in that room.
Before, I had left and right as Moveto and Move(are)* (modes 8 and 9) and used Walkto (with changing cursor icon) for diagonals.
I just changed it so they all use Walkto (with different cursors), and they all (in that room) stopped working.

How might I have disabled that mode, though?
There's no other mention of mouse modes in the room yet, and I've tried entering from four different entry points to the same result, so it's not likely to be anything outside the room script, is it?

It now uses Lookat mode constantly in that room, despite the global rep_exec saying "Walkto if over an exit point, or Pointer if not", and no Lookat anywhere.

*this is supposed to be the letter 'r', as seen in the pic above, but was "automatically edited for txt-style spelling".

On a (tenuously) related note, now that I'm using the method Kris suggested, it changes mode when I hover over an exit point, but there is a brief delay (I'm assuming one cycle) in changing back when I move off again.
Example: if the hotspot leads to the Mayor's house, on mouseover it'll display "Walk to the Mayor's house", but when moving off it flashes "Walk to" before going blank again.
Is there any way to fix this? It's pretty annoying.

Thanks.
#218
Okay, I tried doing a custom property instead and it still didn't work for that one hotspot.
Then I changed it from...

Code: ags
 mouse.Mode = eModeWalkto;
 mouse.ChangeModeGraphic(eModeWalkto, 1);

...to...

Code: ags
 mouse.Mode = eModeMoveto;
 mouse.ChangeModeGraphic(eModeMoveto, 1);

...and it works fine.
So it was apparently a problem with eModeWalkto, but then why would it work on all other hotspots in the game but this specific one?

Even though it's not an issue anymore, I'd still like to get this figured out in case it affects (or is related to something that will affect) the game in some other way.
I can always swap the code back to eModeWalkto to test theories.

Any thoughts?
Thanks.

A lot of people think it is Japanese the first time they see it.

Some gay in the show? There's quite a lot of cross-dressing, sure, but that's about it.
I mean, there are plenty of people who write fanfiction about that kinda thing, but I don't really see it, myself.
Maybe I'm just naïve. ::)

And thanks.
I hope the game doesn't disappoint. :)

The Rumpus Room / Re: The Game Idea Thread
Fri 29/08/2008 21:09:55
I had an idea. Not sure how original it is, but anyway...

Player character plays an adventure game where people are locked in a hotel and start dying one by one (the standard).
They then go on holiday and soon discover that the events of the game are actually happening to them, so they know what's going to happen where, when and to whom and are just running around trying to stop it.
Like whoever is doing it to them made the game as a kind of blueprint for their ideas.

Now I think about it a bit more, maybe it's been a few years since the character played the game, so they've forgotten most of the details.
This could be where the puzzles come in - they have to figure out and/or remember what's going to happen in time to prevent it.
Kinda like that Squidi mechanic blueskirt posted a while back, actually.

I'm not sure how suited to a game this might be.
Maybe it'd be better as a short story or film, but there you have it.
