Yeah, the slow download is definitely worth it. Played for half an hour and it's really freaking me out. Very nice game with great atmosphere.

Thanks for all the feedback so far. Please keep it coming.
Here is an animation I did:

As usual, c&c and paint-overs welcome
#124
Thanks for your quick comment.
The clothes still lack detail and shadow as I'm still working on the animations and I find it easier to add these stuff after the animations are finished rather than to animate very detailed sprites with shadows and everything already in place. They will be added later though...

As you might have noticed 'A painter's journey' by Juliuz has been in production for some time now. I signed up to do the sprites ages ago and I've finally reached a stage to present them to this community and get some C&C on it.

This is Bob. He works in a factory which produces paint and he is the main character:

I'm still working on the back view...

This is Bob's boss:

This little fellow here plays an important part in the story, but I don't want to give away too much:

What do you think?

I liked the music puzzle and I don't think it's too difficult. I figured it out after three tries. The fact that you could play your melody along was really helpful to find the right tunes. Strange that it seemed to be rather difficult for most people...

As far as I remember you get the map before leaving the city. Actually you can't leave without the map.

Hint
Spoiler
You have to die to get into hell and afterwards heaven. Don't know if you've been to hell yet, but the solution to the puzzles should be in this thread somewhere.
To die, you need to fix the gallows. The solution to that is somewhere in here, too. If you're in heaven, talk to St Peter and you'll get closer to the map.

@splat44: Well, it looks correct to me.
Spoiler
This is what I used and it worked and looks a lot like He-Man's solution.
D=down
U=up
1: D D D U U
2: D U D D U
3: U D D U D

Down means that this lever thingy needs to be down and up therefore that it has to be up.

Be sure to get rid of your sins first...

Go to the church and confess your sins. Then go to the gallows and get yourself hanged once again. You should then be transported to heaven and be able to talk to St Peter.

Alright, there seem to be quite a lot of people who are stuck in several places. I'll do my best to give some solutions:

how to get the key to the crypt

Hint 1
Spoiler

You obviously must distract the priest or make him go away.
[close]

Hint 2
Spoiler

Did you notice that he is not in the room when you are confessing your sins, but in the confession box? You just have to find a way to keep him in there while you are outside...
[close]

Solution
Spoiler

Go to the place where the druid lives and get the sad guy a beer at the bar. He will give you his demo tape in exchange. Use the tape with the ghetto blaster. Go to the church and tell the priest that you want to confess. In the box, simply use the ghetto blaster and the priest will listen to the complaining on the tape while you can leave and get the key.

how to get the beer

Hint 1
Spoiler

The barkeeper says that there is some coupon for unlimited free beer... You simply need to find this
[close]

Hint 2
Spoiler

It's in the bar...
[close]

Solution
Spoiler

Use the arcade machine. I don't know whether you need to get a certain score to get it, because I played three times in a row without quitting. The highest score I got was 50, so even if you need to get a certain number of points, it shouldn't be too hard...
You get the free beer coupon as a price.

how to get the science magazine for the druid

Hint 1
Spoiler

As I've seen no magazine store around in the whole country, there must be other ways to get it...
[close]

Hint 2
Spoiler

Maybe somebody has a suscription...
[close]

Hint 3
Spoiler

You'll find the magazine in the mailbox at King Arnold's castle
[close]

Solution
Spoiler

Go to the place where the druid lives and look at the box. You'll find glue and a firecracker. Go to the bar and light it on the candles. Go to King Arnold's castle and use the lit firecracker with the mailbox. You'll get a nice bang and the magazine

how to get the gallows working

Solution
Spoiler

Look inside the trashcan in front of King Arnold's castle to find three metal rods there. Then go to the gallows and open the hatch. Get the dead rat out, close the joker in a box and the drop. Use on of the metal rods with the arms and one with the drop. Use the rubber band with the cog wheels and you're done.

Ah, this is great. Downloading....

EDIT: That was a really enjoyable and beautiful game, a worthy sequel to the first chapter. The puzzles are perfect, nothing too hard, but hard enough to keep you entertained and challenged. The characters are just great and I love those little in-game jokes. In my opinion, one of the best AGS games ever made. I'm really looking forward to the third (and last?  :'() chapter.

However, I still found some minor spelling mistakes and some minor bugs:
Spoiler
1. When clicking on a location on the map with another location between you and the destined location you are sometimes taken to the location in between (for example: if you get out of the place where the druid lives and click to stairway to heaven, you'll get to the church as it lies in between...)
2. The writing on the guy's shirt who sells the maps is wrong when he walks to the right and the priest's bottle changes hands...

It didn't stop me from solving the game, though, and I still had a good time...

Btw, I really loved the German guard. I'm German and so it was quite funny to read his text. There are some grammatical mistakes, but I'm aware that grammatical correctness isn't the point, but entertainment and it surely was entertaining  ;D.

So, keep up the good work and get that third chapter finished!!!  ;D

i know its a bit empty but i was just hoping you could comment on that and give some advice.
and i really dont know what to make happen in here. maybe you'll find something in the box or something like that

Well, without knowing the actual story of your game, it's gonna be quite difficult to give you some ideas. The background as it is looks really nice, but you should probably get the story and puzzles done first and then make your backgrounds according to what is needed for the puzzles and story. Each background should have a purpose imo and it's best if that purpose is clear before the bg is actually made.
That's just my opinion of course and I'm probably wrong, but I think working the way you do increases the danger of getting some pretty boring puzzles (like I did when I tried to make my first game using the same method  ;)).
Anyway, I think you are off to a good start here. Just out of curiosity, will your game feature a third person or first person view?

If I do a character sprite from a side view
and then do a bg with the camera looking from the upper corner to center of a room
then I have to remake the character sprite?  ???

o/

I guess it depends. This is a screenie from a discworld game. Don't know which or where I got it as I've never played it, but just came across that screenie on the net, liked the graphics style and saved it one my hd to study it a bit more.
Screenie 1
Screenie 2
Screenie 3

I guess you are aiming for a perspective like that. As you can see, they just used the normal side-view and it really looks acceptable imho. Of course, if you look at it closer, you'll soon recognise that there is something not quite right about the character's perspective, but hey, they didn't even do an extra perspective for the character in this professional commercial game which had at least three screens featuring such a perspective. Why should you bother if not even people do who earn money with their games?  ;). I'd say just use the normal side-view.

Concerning the first drawing I agree to Squinky and Minimi. It's undoubtedly good work, but it's still improvable.
The second one on the other hand, seems really perfect to me. I love the shading and it doesn't look messy at all.

Keep up the good work.

It seems rather empty. I guess you'll be adding an audience later, but still a bit more detail on the background itself would be nice.
Also those pillars look really weird, especially the one on the right.
Apart from that it looks ok. Perhapy you could animate the flags to make them look like they are blowing in the wind to give a bit more of realism and life to the scene.

You are off to a good start.
