General Discussion / Re: Females , Unite!
Wed 27/09/2006 00:24:47
I don't really see the need for a group of females helping each other and others out. I am female and I never had any problems to find someone to help me if needed. Neither the regular helpers at CL nor at Beginner's Tech or anywhere else on this forum seem to mind at all whether a member is male or female.
Since even I (as a female) don't really get this whole concept, I can totally understand why some of the guys here are confused...

What would be the advantage of an all-girl team wanting to make a great game, compared to just any team wanting to make a great game? Why exclude some wonderful, talented people to contribute to a great game just because they have balls?

You obviously don't like stereotypical female characters as depicted in some games, so my guess is that you might wanna form a team to make a game that's not like that. If that's the case and you have a good idea or want to come up with one and I can contribute anything helpful, no problem. But there are probably quite a number of very talented males that would also like to help out making a game like that. And why shouldn't they?

I don't see any reason to unite, since there is nothing to unite against.

Whoa, that was quite a long post to say "I don't get it!"  ;)

I looked at my local store today, but there was no Zuckerhut available. My grandmother told me that the last time she saw one was about 20 years ago. Sorry.

I don't know if normal sugar cubes work. You have to soak them in brandy for quite some time to make sure the fire burns long enough. As far as I know is the brandy you pour over it just a little extra and mainly for show. If you just pour the alcohol over, the fire will burn only for a couple of seconds and you can't repeat it endlessly, since the sugar starts to caramelise pretty fast and the brandy can't get in anymore. The only problems with sugar cubes could be that it might be hard to soak them long enough, since they dissolve pretty quickly. But that's just a guess.

You could simply try and make your own Zuckerhut. Just heat some water, let loads of sugar dissolve and then put a long piece of string in it and wait a couple of days till the sugar has crystallised again. You just have to be carful then that the string doesn't end up in the bowl later  ;)

But can someone ship me a Zuckerhut?

Feuerzangenbowle is not really a tradition in the part of Germany I live in and I didn't even know what a Zuckerhut was until I read the wiki article. I've never seen one in the supermarkets I've been to, but since I never really looked for it, it's not impossible that they have it. I'll have to go shopping tomorrow anyway, so I'll take a look and see what I can do.

EDIT: And I agree to dkh that the film is great  :D

That's probably because you don't need a class to learn how to program - you're doing CS so presumably you will learn all by yourself. Whereas that other stuff (electronics, maths) is very important but you don't realise it yet. I'd guess that later on they'll have some more formal programming classes, after you've got the basics. You really should know how a NAND gate works, how a processor works, how an OS works, how a compiler works etc.

Oh, I do realise that that "other stuff" is important. That's exactly why I mentioned it, to point out that R4L's current class might be not as useless as he thought it would be on his way to become a programmer.

I think you are talking about "Feuerzangenbowle". I've never actually seen it being made or drank in real life, but I saw it in an old German film once.
Maybe this can help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feuerzangenbowle

Currently, in 10th grade (bear with me) I was given the option to take a Computer Applications class, so I took it. The class sucks. It teaches some basic knowledge about how computers began, and how hardware works, but we don't learn about Programming Languages, or anything related.

I started studying Computer Science a year ago and I wish I had had a class like yours to prepare me for it, because all we did was to learn about how computers began, how the hardware works and loads and loads of Maths. The only programming language related course that was available was voluntarily and started at 7am on Monday morning  :(. It was like they didn't really want you to take it. So depending on what you are going for, your class might turn out to be pretty useful.
Anyway, even though I have to admit that Computer Science is not really the right choice here in Germany if you wanna become a programmer, knowing a bit about the history of computers and some basic hardware knowledge can't hurt you.

But don't worry. I know a bunch of programmers that didn't have any knowledge about programming until they started to study it at a university and they still made it. If you wanna prepare, just do as the others suggested and study a bit on your own etc.

Completed Game Announcements / Re: The Shivah
Wed 02/08/2006 01:54:03
EDIT: Problem solved and game completed. It was really great. I had a very good time playing. Thanks to everyone involved.

Just a little suggestion and maybe another small bug:

Spoiler
It was really confusing that Jack's wife just didn't react at all to the question about Joe's meeting. Maybe you could have her say at least that she hasn't heard about it in the deluxe version or something.
Concerning the bug, when fighting with Zelig, I first didn't really understand the fight system and was therefore hit a lot. When I reached the end of the balcony though, I wasn't pushed off, but the fight continued. I kept getting punched and being pushed further to the right until the sprite was completely off screen. Zelig remained in his position after reaching the end of the balcony though.

I live in Dortmund, the city where the game took place. It was amazing. During the match, the streets were totally empty. I live right next to a very busy street, but there was simply no traffic at all. When Italy scored, there were disappointed screams and yells coming from almost every window.
I would have wished the German team to win , because they improved so much and played really well (not because I'm German). But today Italy was a tad better imho and deserved to win, though I agree to dkh that Germany had some good moments in the 2nd half.
Everything has a positive side. Italy's victory spares me the usual winning party of my neighbours and the terrible mix of techno and top40 crap that comes along with it  ;D.

I just listenend to your version, Thomas. Man, that was hilarious and quite cute in a dusturbing sort of way  ;). Even if you had had a competitor you would have been the winner for me. I especially liked the 'Leck mich am Arsch' part  ;D. It completely made my day. Danke schön  ;D

The new version is definitely better. What happened to the "Talk to the nose blah blah.." bit though? I liked it.
I just listened to the music samples on your site. You rock! If nothing interferes, I'll either come to your show in Dortmund or Cologne. So save one of those shirts for me  ;D

i Thought you had to post a Screenshot?

He did (3 actually), but they are not showing, because Geocities sucks  ;).

Anyway, I'm downloading right now. I'll edit this post later with some comments.

EDIT:
I played for about half an hour, but now I'm stuck. It's really nice so far. The graphics are very well done and I love all the various key hiding places. There are a lot of "That doesn't work"s and the walk-behind in the classroom (I think the Maths classroom) isn't working correctly (he walks on the teacher's desk). Also the music doesn't work for me at all.
But apart from that, it's very well done and fun to play. I'll definitely finish it tomorrow. I'm just too tired now.
Why is this your "most likely last AGS game"?  :'(

:o I can't believe in which direction things are going here:
An official whore house with dancing girls? An army of cloned half-naked women?

WHAT HAPPENED TO SEXUAL EQUALITY?!?  >:(  ???

I demand the creation of the Department of Sexual Equality and the appointment of a proper minister to be the head of this department (I'd like to nominate myself for that position ;)).
The minister's responsibility should be to ensure equal rights and living conditions for both men and women and everthing in-between. The first steps of this new department should be to ensure that the official whore house has dancing boys as well (male employees in general offering the same services the female ones offer) and that half of the clone army consists of half-naked handsome men!

Until this outrageous injustice is rightened, I'm not signing the constitution! I'm even considering to join the rebellion (if they can ensure me that they'll help me fight for sexual equality ... and dance for me ... in their underwear. Since I'm all about sexual equality, I'd dance for them as well of course...) or to start my own!

Just a quick question: Are the walls supposed to be of the same colour and the difference comes from shading? Because if that is the case, shouldn't the wall with the window in be darker than the others?

I don't know Asio4All, but my experience is that freeware Asio emulators are nice for testing stuff etc, but don't really get satisfactory results to get you around buying a proper Asio card (which I obviously can't afford)
Apart from that, I also want to be able to plug my keyboard into other PCs as quickly as possible, since I sometimes take it to friends, need it on stage but connected to the band's computer etc. There are just too many difficulties with the gameport method and I honestly don't want to carry my computer around with me all the time. The keyboard is heavy enough.
Since the cable I'd need to plug it into my comp via gameport is only slightly cheaper (4â,¬, I think), I'll definitely go for the system that offers me the most advantages and since there are quite a lot, I think they are worth 4â,¬.

You can always do the old ProgZ ghetto recording method and use your computer keyboard for everything ;|
I tried that once and this experience was one of the main reasons why I decided to get a proper keyboard  ;). Do you still do your stuff like that? Because then I'd have to envy/admire you even more...

There is also a free software that turns game controllers into Midi controllers (joysticks etc). A friend of mine had a plan to buy a data glove and use it like that but guess he forgot about it.
That sounds interesting. Never heard about that. I think I'll stick to the "old-fashioned" way though...

Yes, my motherboard has a gameport, but as far as I know those adaptor cables are only slightly cheaper (the cheapest one I found was 15â,¬) and not really good (the ones I tried all had timing issues etc.). Apart from that the gameport is already in use and I don't want to crawl under my desk everytime I want to make some music. But thanks for the tip anyway.

ProgZ, I didn't know they'd cost so much either.
Thanks for the tip, Geoffkhan, but those are far too expensive for me. I even found some shops that sell the M-audio Uno for 40â,¬, but still too much for my taste.
I think I'll try the Swissonic one. It seems to be the cheapest.

Thanks for the help!

General Discussion / midi interface
Thu 09/03/2006 14:34:16
I recently got myself a very nice YAMAHA keyboard and now I am looking for a good and cheap usb midi interface to plug it into my computer. Is there anything you can recommend. The cheapest one I found was the Swissonic USB 1x1 for 19.90â,¬ at thomann.de(site is in German, but contains a picture). Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything else about it. There doesn't seem to be another shop that is selling those and I found no test results etc.
My questions now are: Does any of you have/know the Swissonic USB 1x1 or do you know whether it is any good? What other devices could you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Critics' Lounge / Re: bunny sprites for c&c

I'll work on the shading a bit more to make the outline less consistent. Thanks, Geoff.
I'll also rework the vest. Once again, thanks for the tip, ProgZ.

Concerning the teeth: Carrotula is supposed to be a blood drinking vampire rabbit (that's all part of my brother's slightly crazy, but brilliant story), so I tried to give him some sort of vampire teeth, while still keeping them bunny/rabbit like. I might try some other designs.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Thanks for all the comments. Keep them coming.

I darkened the outline and it definitely looks better now, so thanks for the tip, ProgZ.

Geoffkhan: Could you give me an example of a part of the shape that needs some more work? I'm not quite sure I get what you mean. I actually did draw the silhouette first and then filled it out.

EDIT: Here is the updated version:

And I made another one. Let me introduce you to the infamous Count Carrotula, the villain of this tale:

1x 3x

Once again, I'd love to hear your opinions, especially on the cloak and the hair, but basically on everything.
