Slightly off topic question for Dave;- How much of a hassle is it when a free title switches to commercial? Does all the 'not-for-profit' (as opposed to public-domain) material used go through clearing or get replaced to avoid any copyright issues?

You'd be surprised at how much of a journalist's time is spent saying, "Oh god, I need content and I need it now. Quick, grab the closest thing at hand and shove it into the slot," and how little is spent, or even available, to seek out quality things worth writing about.

Even a desperate journalist will rationalize his\her choice. If you've got 40 games from indie producers (indie being pretty far ranging, if you include half a ton of apps, flash games, gamemaker trash etc.), you'll gravitate to the ones from (indie) publishers \ producers you've heard of first, because A. your audience has probably heard of them, and B. you're not taking as much of a risk of having your time wasted.

I don't think just sticking a price tag on something helps. You're just as likely to get good PR for releasing a free game (if it's good), although it might come from different sources.

Dave Gilbert ended up publishing Da New Guys, so he could probably shed a little light on the subject. Based on some of his posts he does a fair amount of promoting, which probably includes providing review copies \ press releases to prominent blogs. I'd assume Dave takes his cut for these services.

Having a publisher (with a decent track record) probably helps a lot, because everyone and their grandma can make a 'game', but no-one wants to go wading through all the shit looking for gold. Major sites probably get bombarded with amateur PR from indie game-makers who want to get their names in the spotlight.

-> Check if the air-con is working. You should be able to feel something coming out of the vents if it's running.

If it's not, I recommend that the next step would be to remove the electronics fuse (since the TV is out anyway), and use that to restore one of the air-cons.

If last night was anything to go by, creating 'lesbian-nymphomaniac adventure' would probably win you 90% of the awards...

Congrats to the winners (I might have to buy Gemini Rue now).

Hey, we've got a wheelchair!

Now all we need is a car battery and some duct tape....

I sit on the other side of the fence;- She looked a lot better when you didn't force the EGA palette.

16 colour games are fine, there's some lovely looking ones out there, but a consistant problem with the EGA palette is the awful result of everyone looking like a pom on vacation. It just looks garish.

Well while were tripping

>Dance

Morphine's the wrong kind of drug for dancing*, all you'll end up doing is falling over and suffering some more head trauma. That's exactly the kind of behavior that gives recreational drugs a bad name.

I still can't find it. Are you talking about the chat client demo? That's not what I was talking about. I recall seeing a multiplayer game demo. Or was it in that multiplayer QfG thing? I can't remember.
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=45714.0 (in the critics lounge) maybe? We've got basically the same debate\ideas going on in 3+ threads at the moment.

Edit:- Restored the subject title to the thread title.

Not sure if this is a bug or someone with a habit for deleting the subject line.

Maybe lock the subject line?

Just a couple of suggestions for when we're done crawling around.

- Take the syringe with you - potential improv weapon. \ take a first aid kit (one with a fresh syringe if there is one) - It's a box. While I doubt it'll make any extra room in our pockets, it provides a safe way to carry dangerous \ fragile items.
- Check the fusebox next to the door (carefully)

It's probably too awesome an idea. Folks are off reading haiku's instead of drawing sprites.....well that's my excuse anyway. This requires a little more thought than my usual 'scribble->scan->sprite' method.

This is a much more compacted version (hence the name).  I don't like it nearly as much but I think it will appease those that felt the default AGS theme had too much "dead" space.  For the most part it's identical to the default AGS theme, I just tucked in most of the padding.
Your efforts are appreciated Darth. Is there any way the compact theme could also effect the way the posts are displayed as well - i.e. min post size, since switching off avatars doesn't do a lot?

Definitely better. I'm pretty sure OCD happens to all pixel artists eventually (it might even be requirement).

The only thing that bugs me is the shoulder 'snap'. It jumps 2 pixels at one point for a couple of frames, and looks a little weird since it's the pivot point for the arm. I might be worth trying to smooth it out a little.

Same thing happens on opera, tons of green, and everything's offset to the right.

(Use whatever browser you like, but test your website on as many as possible.)

I'd do away with the head twist. People look where they're going (or have bruised knees), and it virtually always looks odd at low resolutions when the details are so small and pronounced.

'fraid I'm with Ryan on this, it just feels empty for the sake of style rather than being functional. It's particularly noticeable on threads with short answers, which can leave you with 3.X 1 line posts to page once the giant avatars and member info are packed in. I've never understood the need for giant avatars, it's like the sig;- Once it gets larger than your average post, it's just a hassle.

Although, I suspect the new style looks awesome on tablet or phone, so it could be just the grumpy desktop\laptop monkeys.

Sorry this is a little late. I lost the grue trophy*, so I had to do a stand in.

Kinda a tough decision due to the sheer awesomeness of the entries here, but;-

First - Amélie
Second - Eric
Third - WHAM

Congrats to everyone who entered. Amélie gets to host the next round.

* Finding it would involve extinquishing the light source, a potentially being eaten.
