Messages - Vince Twelve

#1421
After a long hiatus, the Twelve Interviews series has been born anew!  The third and latest interview is a chat with Francisco "Grundislav" Gonzalez about creating an episodic game series.

You can find the interview on the new xii games website.  (Direct link)  Both of the previous interviews have been spruced up and posted on the site too.

So take a moment and read the interview.  If you have any questions for Grundislav, I'm sure he wouldn't mind you posting them here for him to catagorically ignore.

Previous Twelve Interviews:

Twelve Interviews #1: Rebecca "Kinoko" Clements

Twelve Interviews #2: Jozef Purdez

Actually, the Dew usually cost us 20 to 25 cents a can.  Regardless, Nik, your math is a bit off.  1000 * $.50 = $500

So, our actual expenses were around 3000 * $.25 = $750.  Not to mention that we weren't "wasting" the money.  That was our usual Dew intake.  We enjoyed the Dew!

And yeah, that beer thing is scary as hell.

Hints & Tips / Re: Hints for Spooks

Perhaps your character needs to learn a little bit more.  I'd try some light reading...

Edit: thanks for the name dropping, by the way.

Can you imagine if the United States government got all huffy and puffy every time it was portrayed negatively in a work of fiction?

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Re: Name?

I have the worst time thinking up names for my characters.  Everything just sounds to stupid.  Which is why the main character of Anna is just called "Hero."  Man, I suck.

Yeah, we just go hang at his house all the time.  It's like MTV's Cribs, only older.

Grundislav and I are going to see Da Vinci code tomorrow night.

Kinoko: Yes, we washed them all out.  It was an apartment (a pretty big one though) with four men living in it.  We didn't need any more smells...

Las Naranjas: Actually Omaha, which is suprememly more fascinating than Lincoln...

Unfortunately, my state, Nebraska, does not have a deposit on cans, so when we took the whole thing in for recycling, we got a check for a whopping $25.  :P

And I should point out that yes, we did take the time to turn every can to face the same direction... because we are sad, sad people.

Back in college I would stay up all night playing video games with my room mates.  A fairly common thing.  We would fuel our gameplaying with Mountain Dew.  Also a fairly common thing.  A lot of Mountain Dew.  So much Dew, that one day, we decided to start building a wall out of our empties.  A wall of Dew.  A Mountain o' Dew, if you will.

By the time we were finished, it comprised of almost three thousand cans.  We took lots of pictures, but they were all lost when one of my old hard drives went kaput.

But just today, my friend posted on his blog some pics that another of my friends managed to dig up from somewhere.

Behold, the wall!  Note that it's two cans thick. (Neither of these people are me)

The view from my bedroom:

The view from my room mate's bedroom:

The view from our games area:

After these pics were taken, we added in a shelf that protruded out from the wall and could actually support books.  Eventually, the wall was declared finished, and we started a pillar in the other corner of the room.  Then on move-out day, we all sat in front of the wall and pulled it down on top of our heads and jumped around on the cans.  It was really loud.

I've since kicked my caffeine addiction (though I still enjoy the occasional Dew).

I hope you enjoyed it!

I think it's fairly clear that this guy is not faking.  He is drawing these by hand.

My uncle Kent Bellows was doing amazing things with pencils up until his recent death (and often selling them at prices exceeding $100K).

Another with nudity

This one that was on the cover of the Gettysburg review isn't a pencil drawing, but still photo-like:

Another that wasn't pencils:

If I go to a museum that is showing one or more of Kent's work, you can see people stick there nose right up to the canvas and say things like, "that's gotta be a photo."  "It has to be a fake."  But they're not.  I've seen many of his works in various stages of completion.  He just has an incredible technical talent coupled with his great artistic talent.

So, this photo-like rendering talent is not unique.  Again, I think it's fairly clear that the iDraw4u guy is not a fake, but he's definitely wasting his talent.  It takes true artistic talent to turn this technical talent into real art.  This guy doesn't seem to be trying.

Completed Game Announcements / Re: Spooks!

The old game site is still there at:

http://games.thexiis.com/

and you can download the game from there.

But while this thread is bumped, I might as well formally introduce the new xii games website:

http://www.xiigames.com

from there you can navigate to the new Spooks page and download the game.

Hoh! Damn, that thing got a lot more expensive.  I had the equivalent of the "Tutorials Only" pass, but it was half that price.  Still, they don't check credentials like E3 does.  You just need the cash.

No it's not.  I went to GDC in 2003.  I went as a student representative of our school's Game Development Group...  which we don't have...

It was a ton of fun.  Way better than E3, because it's for developers.  I got to take classes along side actual game developers and join in some very amazing sessions.  I met tons of folk who were like nerd-famous.  I had sushi with the art team of The Getaway and went to dinner with a couple folks from Secret Level.  I shook hands with the designer of Diablo.  It was cool.  The swag wasn't as good as e3 though.

Edit: Oh yeah, I won a remote control car from Alien Ware just for walking down the aisle.  I had to give it to some kid at the hotel though because I couldn't fit it into my luggage.

I put in a couple similar substitution cyphers into my Domestic Conspiracy Demo but with each, I included a hint that could help the player decode the cypher.  Try it out.

I don't know what you're talking about, Mistral.  The sprites in all of my games look they were drawn by our lord and savior, Jesus Christ, himself.  Well, before he got those holes in his hands and died and all...  :P := :D ;D :o ::)

General Discussion / Re: Wii

I think the argument about the internet not being equal to real life is not meant to be what you're interpreting it to be.  I believe the idea is not that what people say on the internet is not what they think in real life.  It's saying that the internet's vocal minority is not equal to the target audience of the device, it's merely a small subset.  There's life outside of the internet that Nintendo is aiming for.  People who've never played a video game because they're intimidated by something; be it the price, the types of the games, or the complicated controllers.

That being said, I still think that the name is in fact going to lose them some sales to the few "hardcore gamers" who won't own a Wii entirely because of the dumb name.  The question that is yet to be answered, and which Nintendo must be confident of the answer to, is whether or not the name is going to gain more sales than it loses by winning over a completely different and much larger crowd.

I still don't like the name, I think it was a bad move.  I'm pretty sure they could have come up with something that would have appealed to the masses without making everyone make pee jokes.

Regardless of the name, I can't wait to play with my Wii all night.

Don't you mean the "Wii-mote controller"?

Merchant of Death, that was the most ignorant thing I've read today.

On Topic:

I'm a fan of the system and excited to buy it.  I'm not excited about the name, but this wired article does a pretty good job at arguing for Wii.

Personally, I still look at it and think it's pronounced "Why?"
