Ooh!  Prove him wrong! Do it!  Tell him it isn't a flame war!  Then tell him how wrong his opinions are and about the time you had sexual intercourse with his mother!

Haha.  I'm sorry if I ever sound too aggressive in one of these debates.  I just love discussions about video games... I'm such a nerd.  And it makes me sad when someone just immediately pooh-poohs something different without having tried it first.  Sure, it may suck, but it might also be really cool... and then you'd feel dumb.

And regarding the pricing of the legacy Nintendo library, Flippy was right, I was suggesting ten bucks for fifty games, not "ten to fifty bucks" per game.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the games.  I just don't see anyway that it would make good business sense for them to give away Konami or Capcom (don't know why I'm picking on those companies) games when they would have to undoubtably pay a liscense fee to offer them for download.  However, I would LOVE to see them offer first party games, games made by defunct companies, or at least some good selection of games availiable for free.  Kind of a "Thank you for buying our console!" thing.  And we'll just have to see.  They could be really nice, they could be really mean, or they could just have a business model that makes sense.  Again, just hold off your anger until you have an actual reason.

And remember, just because Nintendo is selling a vibrator, doesn't mean you have to use it.

I'm also tired of Nintendo's recycled-game-buzines. They're rereleasing Mario World on the GBA, they're rereleasing Super Mario Bros. on the GBA. FUCK YOU, Nintendo! I finished those games before I had pubes. I don't feel like buying them again. Make me happy and make a NEW Mario game for the gba.

You don't have to buy them, you know.  They were made for the (probably) thousands of people who really do want another version of these games.  Just because you don't want them doesn't mean that they don't make somebody happy. Plus they are making a new Mario game... for the Revolution and the DS anyways...

QuoteNintendo could let people download their games for free. EVERYBODY would buy a Revelution if they get free games. But there are 3 reasons why they won't.
1: They want money
2: They want money
3: They don't want to overload the servers. (They could do it like HotU, one download at a time and an ultra slow downloadspeed, but they want money)

Those bastards!  They remind me of the complete asses down at my local used games store who refuse to just GIVE me all their old Nintendo games.  I think the only reason they wont do it is because they want money.

Seriously, I don't know of a lot of companies who would just give away a product that they could sell.  Not to mention that most of those games aren't even Nintendo's to give away.  Do you think Capcom or Konami would be happy if people could just freely download the games that they made? (Well, download LEGALLY...) There are liscense fees to be paid.  We wouldn't just be downloading them for free, Nintendo would be paying for them.

And you don't even know the price.  It could end up being like ten bucks for 50 games... who knows what pricing model they're going to use.  Just hold off your anger until you know more.

Oh, and again... no one is forcing you to buy them.  Nintendo is offering a service that a lot of people will be interested in, not forcing it upon us.

QuoteAirplanes, helicopters, cranes and cars all still have wheel and joystick controll. You dont need 3d controllers to play a 3d game on a 2d tv.
No, you don't NEED a 3d controller.  But it COULD be really fun...

Quote(Did Nintendo say that they were making 3D view games, were you have to wear 3D glasses? Or was that something else. Memory too vague.)
Nope, Konami just announced one though.  It's a peripheral for the PSP game Metal Gear Ac!d 2.  Unless you're thinking of something else.  And I wouldn't count one out of the picture for the Revolution.  Who knows what kind of wacky uses we'll see for that port at the bottom of the control.

Quote
Those stearingwheels for computers look great, but nobody ever got a faster racing time by using a stearing wheel with rumblepack instead of using a d-pad.
I doubt the accuracy of this statement.  But ignoring that, steering wheel peripherals have never been about making you better at racing games.  They're about immersement and fun.  Similarly, Nintendo didn't make this new controller to make you more adept at racing games (or other genres), though that may well turn out to be the case.  Nintendo made this controller to make the games more fun.

Oh, and on the subject of sex toys.  I wouldn't write it off until I've tried it, but the remote control's dimensions make it look a little uncomfortable.  I'd much rather try out the sleek PS2 controller.  That is... if it were anatomically possible...

Besides, there have already been much better forays into the field of game controller sex toys...

Just had to share these.  Not sure if it's genious or ... nah, it's genious.

Keep in mind though: I'm pretty sure these are not official Nintendo images, but with the dock on the base of the controller, you can bet you'll see some weird peripherals like these.

Sorry YakSpit, but your religion is just silly...  :-\ just because you believe in that silly religion of yours doesn't make it true.  You're going to no such place.  You'll be joining the rest of the non-pirates in a very noodle-less hell unless you repent immediately and recognize his Flying Spaghetti Monsterness as the one true god.

Yar.

LJUBI are my favorite posters.  They remind me that I'm more intelligent than a lot of people out there.  They also believe that they are more than one person, which entertains me.

Way to go, LJUBIs, way to go!  To bad I won't ever have a chance to meet you guys since you won't be joining me in my noodly heaven.

but interesting design is probably not something that is going to sell with gamers now, more important to them seems to be how much horsepower the system has

Which is exactly why they're doing this.  They can't compete with the forces of Sony or the money-full Microsoft in terms of hardware strength.  They've lost that war and they've lost many of those gamers that you speak of who only care about polygon numbers.  With this, they're trying to bring in new gamers as well as bring new game-types into consoles.

For me, with a wife and a daughter on the way, I don't have much time to play games anymore, but I used to be a big console gamer.  I miss games, but I pay attention to the games news now, and I don't feel like anything has come out in the last year that I hadn't already played.  Now, with this new controller (which admittedly I feared at first glance) I feel excited for the system.  Because it's so intuitive and fun (according to every internet journalist who tried it out at the Tokyo Games Show), it's something I can probably even get my wife to play (she's one of those new gamers Nintendo is targeting), plus it's got that huge back-catalog of old Nintendo games that I would gladly pay a few bucks to download and play again.

When Nintendo invented the D-pad everyone thought it was ridiculous compared to the tried-and-true Atari Joystick.  By changing the controller so radically, they changed the types of games we all play on consoles.  Then Nintendo invented shoulder buttons, the analog controller, and the rumble pack.  Modern console controllers look like they look today because Nintendo made them that way, but the controller constrains the types of games that are possible.  Look at how differently computer games and console games are designed.  Ports between the systems always seem awkward because of the vastly different interfaces.  Now, with a completely different controller design, Nintendo has made it possible to play most of the types of games that currently infest consoles (with the possibility of playing them in a completely new and fun way... read the IGN article Edmundo linked to) but also a number of new types of games.  I'm excited to see what comes out of this.

I'm not opposed to action sequences.  But overly-lengthy action sequences with shoddy control are definitely a problem in my book.  I was excited about Bone, but now I'm going to wait and hear a few more reviews before making my decision.  Weird how their "Free Trial" which is supposed to increase sales may have just lost them one...

I figure if someone's obsessed enough to come all the way to Japan to find me...

Be careful what you wish for!

Obsessed enough:  Check!

In Japan: Check!

Taken pictures of SpacePirateCaine while he was sleeping: Check!

My AGS map flag is about as accurate as I can get on the blurry low resolution imagery of Okinawa that they have.  I wish they would update it.

Competitions & Activities / Re: Ongoing Comic
Tue 13/09/2005 03:30:25
In the interest of helping what I think is a good idea, here are the rules again with emphasis added to the important comic-structure-related rules:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---No going non-sequitur (off topic) unless it progresses the story in a logical manner.
---Make your work exist in a 640 X 480 frame. If you need to show action, you can use multiple frames, but they all must fit within a 640X480 space.
---If you want the next frame, post a space holding message. Once the frame has been drawn, edit the post to reflect the newly drawn frame. After twelve hours have passed with the person who claimed the space not posting anything, someone else can take the post.
---In a fourteen-point Comic Sans font in the bottom left hand corner of the frame, insert a sequential frame number (the first being 1).
---To keep with ease of reading, uniformity, and legibility, use Comic Sans font at any legible point size that befits your frame. For "Bangs" and "Booms" and such things, feel free to draw it yourself, but only if style calls for it (that type of thing wouldn't be found in, for example, a survival horror type of comic, but would abound in a superhero story).
---You must wait at least 5 frames before posting a new frame, to ensure that everyone gets a chance to participate.
---The story will be indefinite. This does not mean that certain storylines will not end, but the main story should be kept going.
---Stay uniform. As nice as nonconformity is, it makes it difficult for readers to enjoy our work. If in one scene the main character is wearing a red shirt, do not change him into a blue shirt randomly in the middle of that scene in which said clothing change would be completely illogical. While we all may have different art styles, it does not mean that just because it is part of our "style" we should feel free to give the main character spiky anime hair and an eyepatch when he has never had these in prior frames...

And here is a rule abiding version of Bluke's page 2:

And finally, page 3:

Yup, as Andy said, transferring all five pieces of the pyramid onto the backbone on the right (the lighter colored backbone) should progress the game.  There's no reson that it shouldn't work...

If it's still not working, let me know!

Hey, and if you enjoy the game (or if you don't...), make sure to leave a comment either on the game's thread or on the AGS game page!

General Discussion / Re: the ipod nano
Fri 09/09/2005 05:16:15
Of course, I think apple would LIKE you to use the AAC (I think that's what it is...) format, but it is definitely not required.  iTunes defaults to ripping music into this format but you can disable the AAC format by selecting mp3 in the preferences:

and it causes no incompatability problems with the iPod.

The Tech Specs Page shows all the different compatible formats!

Enjoy your iPod!  This new Nano is definitely making me consider replacing my 3 year old model...

It's pretty slick, I say...
I'm sorry, the Apple marketing staff demands kindly requests that you change your wording immediately at your earliest convenience to "impossibly slick" to match the iPod Nano's market image or face legal action. Thank you.

I will never buy an iPod until they allow mp3 rather than the proprietary crap forcing you to use iTunes yadayada. ...
Congratulations!  That day has come! (specifically, it was the same day the iPod was released)  I don't know what you're talking about.  The iPod has always allowed mp3 in addition to offering their own proprietary format (that you can turn off with the click of a check box.)  I've never had a single file in this format (can't even remember the name) and I've been using my iPod for over three years.  Rest assured that any mp3 you have that doesn't have some weird microsoft-designed DRM can be placed on an iPod. (and even the DRM-ed ones can be used with just a quick burn and re-rip)

And you don't have to use iTunes.  There are other programs out there that do the same job well.  But iTunes makes synching your iPod and music collections so easy that there's no reason not to use it if you have an iPod.  Don't be mad at Apple for putting out a product and ALSO making the best tool for interfacing with that product.

They wouldn't have such a domination on the market if they made their customers jump through hoops to use their product.

Thanks for the comments simulacra and Andy!

And Andy: I'm glad that the manual could help you.  I told myself that if the built in hint system could help just one person it would all be worth it!

Kinoko & Iqu: Don't worry about me.  Okinawans barely blink at typhoons.  We literally get a typhoon a week around here.  We're up to our kneepits in 'em.  (Between August and December last year, we were hit by eighteen.)  Okinawa, however, unlike New Orleans (partially thanks to certain budget cuts), is built to withstand this kind of barrage.  Here, the only typhoon preparations we have are taking our plants inside.

And to the LJUBI twins (possibly triplets?) and anyone else who believes in their so-called "god":

You are going to hell.  I'm sorry to say it but it's true.  You are going to hell unless you imediately change your ways and convert to the one true religion.  Let him reach out and touch you with His Noodly Appendage and you will truly know God.

Furthermore, your "god" did not send the hurricane.  It is known by followers of the one true religion that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s.  For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.

I think, beyond a reasonable doubt, I have proved my point (unless any of you FSM-less heathens have a chart) and we can therefore lay to rest the whole religious issue.

P.S. Aaarrrrrrrr!

Dudes (you're more than one person right?), don't blame America for killing 2Pac.  We didn't all kill 2Pac.  That was just me.  But it was an accident, I swear.  Don't worry though, I'll get what's coming to me.  That angry vengeful god who you apparently speak for is coming for me tonight:

Well, if everything is working correctly, there should be no reason for you to open the "fscommand" folder.  You should be able to launch the game, change the settings, and access the manual without opening that folder.  (I probably should have made it a hidden file)  The "Anna's Game and Settings.exe" should open a menu allowing you to change the settings or launch the game.  I decided to do this because the game's folder was getting quite cramped with the output and save files.

But, the menu isn't working?  That's strange.  Does it load and then the buttons do nothing?

As for unlocking things in the manual, you should load that HTML file "Anna's Manual.html" and the manual will load and automatically unlock the proper bits.  At your point in the game, you should already have unlocked a few things.  Check the computer terminal on the right side of the room in the manual.

All of these things should work correctly on every Windows system.  If you're running linux, that may account for some problems.  If it's still not working let me know.

Oh and:

QuoteSo far I got the code for the cryo pod, but I don't know where to use it

Haha!  :o No need to imagine if it would pass in an AGS game!  This is the very animation that I painted over for the main char of Anna!

I took out eight frames and painted over the rest.

edit:

Here's an animation (though it's rather jerky thanks to the screen capturing software I used):

edit2:

And I should add that one of those "herky jerky" frames is on the full extension of the right leg.  Without it, the guy looks like he's limping or something (as seen in DM's animation).  I left it in, and then just painted the jerky body in the place that it should have been.
