A new game in the making, a new issue to tackle:

If you've played Resident evil 4, you will remember the active cutscenes in the game. I'm looking to replicate these in an AGS game.

The idea is as follows: A cutscene runs in the game, then is halted in a certain phase and the player is prompted for input. If the user gives the correct input quickly enough, the game responds, if not, the game responds differently (for example, the player was too slow to dodge a bullet, gets hit and dies instantly).

HOW can you make this? How do I stop a cutscene and wait for the player to react, how do I create a timer like this? If someone could give me a basic idea to build on, I'd be ever grateful.

I don't suppose there's a chance you'll offer a lower-quality version for download with subsequent episodes (lower bitrate, mono channel audio files)?
My connection really makes downloading files >50mb a pain (not that I can't leave it to download, but it makes browsing at the same time rather slow).

Edit numero uno:
Spoiler
Heard the explosion. Went down the elevator to look around. Came back up and was right next to the zombie (which moves way to fast to avoid by the way), pretty difficult not to die.

Spoiler
This is a known issue, and I attempted to remedy it.  Are you sure you are playing the 1.1 version? The dude is not supposed to appear immediately, but only a while later. Nevertheless, using the elevators while he is chasing you is to be avoided if possible. He is smart enough to stalk you at the other end!

HINT/SOLUTION
Spoiler
If you shoot the dude and then immediately use the elevator, he wont see you use the elevator and cannot follow you!

To the issue of large download size, the future episodes will not be any smaller, as I am expecting the secong installment of the series to be of approximately 500MB of size, as it will have over 5 times the voicework, and three to four times the amount of music, plus a lot more art and code.

It will probably be distributed in the form of a torrent at first... But we'll just have to wait and see about that.

For the knowledge of all who liked Infection's first episode:

"Infection - Episode 2 - The *****" is now officially in the making! I will be releasing a new website for the game's developement within the month. The new, improved, website will have weekly updates, art, more information, and a short audio-only trailer, to act as a hint to where the series is headed.

Also, I just want to remind people, that there are still 3 pieces of the Infection - Episode 1 - The ship LIMITED EDITION CD's available for the price of 10â,¬.  (...plus shipment. Disk will be shipped from Finland) The idea is to promote the developement of Infection 2 and to... make me RICH!!! MUAHAHAHAHAAA!!!

*Places a small plaque with the text "PM me about the Limited edition CD" to my space-pirate hat*

Drat! Was there such a limitation in the old 2.72? I havent gotten around to the 3.0 yet, or is my memory really this bad!?

This could fix my problems though, so thanks. I'll do some more planning with this information and return here if I still need ideas.

Have you tried Monkey's properties module? I think it should do what you want.

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=27385.0

What would I be giving the properties for? Is it possible to create 300 Characters to give the properties for? I was under the impression you can only have 50 or so characters in an AGS game.

The database would hold the data of all the characters in my game (Approx 200+ characters).

Data of a character: Room_Character_Is_In, injury_level, morale_level, awareness, Ammo, Name, etc.

There would be 10 or more different stats for all the characters.

I also need a way to keep track of locations of certain items, and statuses of differet rooms (Room_Grid_X, Room_grid_Y, Room_Damage_Level, etc.)

The idea is to load these stats from the database when the player is in the same room as the characters, and then use them as stats for a generic NPC, who would then act accordingly.

Basically, the character database would look something like

PRIMARY KEY: (Automatic integer)
NAME: "Pete"
ROOM: "28"
INJURY: "0"
MORALE: "5"
AWARENESS: "2"
And so on...

(Search didn't bring up anything really helpful)

Hello people!

I'm about to start up a fairly large game, and am in need of a database to keep track of about three hundred things in the game. Using simple variables such as integers would be quite a bother, so my question is: Is there a way to use an external database in an AGS game? (For example: create an Access database, read data from it and use it in the game, write data into it from the game and so on)

Has anyone done this before? Are there any other solutions to this problem available?

Thanks in advance to all who reply!

Wtf? How long will the next part be?? And why the hell will it take you 1.5 years to complete a "short" game or is it a full length one?

The sequel will contain dozens of improvements, several paths for the player to choose from, more story, more characters and way better graphics. It will also no longer be a "short game", but instead I'm aiming for a full lenght game.

Also, to be honest, I doubt the game will see completion before 2012 or something. I'm missing a sprite artist and a lot of time...

You posted a link to the rapidshare-downloadsite. This is the right one:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1019

Hahahahaha! That's what I get from overusing copypaste! Thank's for the correction! :)

Also: Thought I'd notify that the "Limited Edition" CD version of the game is available for purchase at 10 €. PM or Email me for more information!
(No, I'm still not looking to make a huge profit with this game (As there are only TEN pieces of the Limited Edition ever made, and about five of them are already sold), but the idea is to see if people like the idea enough to be willing to pay 10€ to support the making of the sequel.)

Let's see how the second part will be. Do you have an idea how long it will take?

The sequel is in a design state and will probably be taking a looong time to complete. Sorry folks, but we're looking at a 2010 release date at best.

I'm not sure what you mean.
All the doors you mentioned can't be opened, the only door that is open is where there's a bridge with an elevator in the middle that the player character doesn't want to use. The doors near the sleeping chamber are the blast door that doesn't open, the entertainment room on the east, and south goes to the aforementioned doors. So what do I do here?  Where do I need to go and what do I need to do?  ???

PLEASE give a full direct answer, not hints

Hmmm... Very strange...
Spoiler
The room with a large biohazard sybol, a bridge and the elevator is where you are supposed to be goibg. The elevator is supposed to be available to you at this point and the character should have no problems in using it. I've never heard of this kind of problem before, as the radio messages in the engine room, with Ellie's scream in the radio, are supposed to allow you to use that elevator.

Stuck, fairly at the beginning:
Spoiler
I seem to have toured every place I can in the ship including entertainment room, storage room and control room. Haven't picked up anything yet. I heard Ellie scream and got command from captain to find her. Now what?  Where is she?  What do I do next exactly?

Please give a full direct answer, NOT hints.

Spoiler
In the corridors, you passed by three doors. (Chamber, C2 and C3) The one closes to the hypersleep-chamber is the one you need to enter.

Reading about your problem tells me, that you seem to have the old version of the game, as the bugs in that game allowed you to have the items you say you have at the same time, which is supposed to be impossible.

The patched version is already released, so check the game's completion thread to get the latest version and try again!

Sorry for the problems the bugs caused...

All right..

I haven't finished it, but I have played through it to an extent.

It is A LOT like 7 days A skeptic.
The first time I played it, I was stuck infront of my sleep chamber. I could not move, and had to restart the game. (it was in the very beginning so I didn't have backtrack too much.)
I noticed that when the character walks into a hallway going right, he will appear on the left of a room. This can be confusing, and isn't consistent. (In movies, directors try to be consistent)

Its a good first game. It just needs work; You'll get it.  I love the sound effects, mostly the doors opening and closing. Dying noise is pretty sweet too. (But I still stand by the fact that Ellies voice is annoying.)
Anyway, I will finish it as soon as I can.

Point A: Please remove the spoiler from your post.

Point B: To me it sounds like you have been playing the old  version. The new version should fix quite a few of the bugs youi encountered. Before the point you mentioned, the game limit's your access to certain parts of the ship to keep you on track and from getting lost. Later on, its mostly about exploration under pressure.

QuoteAlso, please do consider a v1.1, adressing at least Leon's story and continuity bugs, those are probably the most serious issues - but do remember Clickteam's Patchmaker. Wink Wouldn't want to force us to download that whole thing again, now would you? Roll Eyes

So... yeah... how about it? A 1.1 patch? So's we don't have to download that huge thing all over again?

I tried the patchmaker and the patch is now available, check the first post. Sorry for the wait!

Played and finished... and liked!

The game itself only got me smiling, but as I recognized the song in the credits... I burst into real laughter! ^__^

Great job!

Posting again to notify that version 1.1 is available on rapidshare now and Zshare later today.

Thank you all for informing me about bugs and such, I hope you enjoy the fixed version.

It is funny you should say this, as the voice actor of the Captain said he would go for a bit russian-ish voice!
Also, Ellie's voice actor is in reality 22 years old, but she has a bit of a little-girlish voice, which suited Ellie's role quite well, although her lack of experience made her work quite a bit weaker...
